Responses fast esay bigger than email free Syncing data between multiple devices. High speeds of torrents, data redundancy is good. FTP for storing things on my web server. no idea Cloud: easier file management File Locker: good for quickly uploading something to send to someone Bittorrent: usually faster (depending on net speed) ease of use and variety of files that are available, free too Unsure Not waiting a whole 24 hours for game It's easy to do and allows me to share content with a group of people. Anonymous and free Cloud file sharing: Easy sharing, and syncing of files File locker: Not so much any more, but easy sharing and finding rarer files. Bittorent: Finding free content, even if illegal. Ease of use (with "cloud" solutions) and variety of selection as opposed to usenet, etc. easy to use and large large selection Using the sky drive takes up less space on my Hard drive. Being able to get access to my files on all my devices. I can access stuff I don't generally keep on USB's from different places. Also I can share things with people much easier by just giving them a link to my dropbox, saves time and effort compared to emailing them the files or sendinv via a client. Convenience, speed, lack of a need for physical space It's the only method I know/Not that techsavvy. Easy to access and lots of choice Easy to use Excellent in corporate/education settings for collaborators from multiple companies or in a class to share files without using email or setting up a server with storage and security and authentication.

Q7: Why do you think some people share copyrighted media without the permission of the copyright holder? Responses Because they can it far to easy to get things free with with a little know how would rather spend time learning to get things free than money they probably do so because it is a free alternative to purchasing the copyrighted data, although that can be based on several different factors: testing something before purchasing, product is way overpriced ($50 for something that is in reality only worth $5), just not wanting to pay for stuff in general, etc Too expensive/rip off to actually pay for it. "Try before you buy"

Responses Some file sharing sites give out money or credits to those who get a lot of hits to the site. A long shot, but maybe to back up theit stuff. With movies and music I think it's because of the cost, the price of cinema tickets and CDs/DVDs etc are too expensive. They don't think to ask.

Also, if a TV show is not available in your country in any way shape or form, other than torrenting, who is losing a sale? depends on the type of product and who made it. products that are sold in smaller amounts will probably be affected significantly regarding financial loss, while on the other hand movies, tv shows and "large" games such as simcity, most likely do not incur much of a financial loss, partly because of fear of getting caught, and because most people probably would not bother with going through the process when they can just click and download something instead Positives: - Helps them get recognition by getting their products out there For music, free albums advertise gigs Negatives: - Small software developers could lose money and not be able to fund future projects Not a great deal, I think. Sometimes it can serve as 'free' advertising for them. They will loose out on money/royalties and improving chart positions. It loses them money but I lose money to go to the cinema/purchase a movie/album that is no good. Depends what the file is, could lose them money, or make them embarrassed or angry, all depends what kind of material it is you are sharing. Depends on the type of file, but has minimal effects. I think it must affect them in some way but I dont think it is as bad as media makes out. When they are charging hundreds of pounds for a single program which they release a new version of every few years, I think if they sell one or two copies, it kinda makes up for 15-20 people buying one version. Now 'how' it affects them. I would imagine just loss of profits? No idea to be honest. It would gain a wider audience. People are more likely to buy from them afterwards. They may be denied a profit.

Q11:What - if any -steps do you take to avoid being caught sharing files without permission? Responses vpn None. I don't do it (anymore). Long before I knew these free files on the internet were a bad thing, I downloaded music and such for 'free', but when I found out the truth behind it, I ended up cutting the habit and buying the media (if possible). There are still some occassions when I do download, such as a rare music CD with no digital version, but I mainly try to avoid doing it rather than avoid getting caught. use a private tracker, do downloads from a leased server that is not located in the US (doubtful that it makes a difference though lol). those vpns that you can rent always seem overpriced for the shitty bandwidth that you will get, the port blocking things seem like a hit or miss, and most of the shared seed-boxes are probably overloaded with too many users (owners are probably more concerned with pulling in cash instead of providing good performance) None Peerblock / Block lists (http://iblocklist.rlcassidy.net/f/tagqfxtteucbuldhezkz/bt_level1.gz). VPN ocassionally. Use a proxy server and never keep the files on my pc. I don't go overboard. Everything in moderation. I only download what I need and I generally keep the downloaded file backed up. This means i only ever need to download it once. None None. Nothing Limit downloads - Use of VPN while using BitTorrent - stopping sharing of files immediately after download - downloading of files from pirated Wifi obscures my IP address so that the cops will mess up my neighbors instead of me VPN Proxies Usenet - all files are downloaded as text.

Responses lack of funds i always buy smaller indie bands or local music but as for movies i stream or torrent most of them i do own a unlimited card for the movies so do go alot as well I believe in the freedom of choice, if someone can't afford to buy software or other media that is overpriced and there is no alternative (not on spotify/netflix/no dvds in stores) then why not? lack of availability. mostly just do tv shows, occasional movie. For the tv shows, we are able to watch them back at home (have the channels and such) although I do not really have access to them on campus, so I just download them instead (not a big fan of streaming, would rather have something that I can watch "offline") for movies, mostly just do them as it is too much of a hassle to work itunes movies (say I wanted to watch it in something other than an apple program) and im not a fan of streaming (do have access to netflix), not only because of the offline stuff, but also because campus IT get upset when we use too much bandwidth The stuff is too expensive for me, or DVDs haven't been released yet. I also wouldn't pay for music that I've never heard before. May have mis-interpreted the word "share" earlier. When I see share, I mean that to include seeding, in for example use of Bitorrent. Primarily I do so to share with others, and give people access to it Because its quicker than loggin into netflix and far more choice. Because in general, the files I share are usually so expensive to buy its just not realistic for me to buy them myself. Because it's free and the actual prices for the products tend to be inflated beyond their worth. I'm very poor. Don't have the money to pay for all goods so it's the next best thing Generally I don't, I usually just leech. I don't have the money to buy everything I want to watch/listen to/ play on my console.

For the most part I think the negative implications are overstated, and believe for the most part that it affects them positively by allowing their media to reach more people, and potentially raise more sales. already answered this aswell ... See 8 It doesn't. Piracy has been shown to never cause a direct loss of profits and in fact, in many cases, has been the direct result of profit. The majority of pirates buy material they've pirated if they enjoyed it. Depends heavily on what I'm downloading. Books/TV, yes I do. Music? Not at all. Negatively and cons them out of money It may affect them positively. Perhaps some smaller artists and developers may be affected negatively by the sharing of their media. The Promo Bay has proved popular for indies though and some have made a lot of money from getting their stuff out there.

DRM Free to play on all my devices if I buy it legitimately. In general, they should be providing previews for all of their content which accurately represent what they are selling. provide additional ways to obtain the content, have decent pricing (for some stuff like software). Finding more ways to block people from pirating files will only encourage them to find ways to get around it again Offering free trials of everything, and lowering their prices. Cheaper, or free in particular. Easier access. No DRM, etc. Cheaper downloads, possibly a better/larger system than lovefilm/netflix. I generally do. I believe the steps have already been taken in terms of digital downloads. Make software cheaper. Lower prices, digital downloads, free torrents to market their material, or they could just try to improve the quality of their product so I could justify paying money for it. For example: adding more special features to a DVD. Release TV shows globally, so I don't have to wait a week to watch the latest episode of my favourite TV show. I'd happily pay a small fee to watch it online at a steady download rate. Make content cheaper to buy and generally of better quality Make it cheaper and more widely available with no digital rights management.

Please briefly explain your answer. Responses its alot quicker to get ur hands on a torrent than the 6 months it take for a dvd / blu ray More content, faster servers, more access and freedom of devices. Piracy will never not offer a better service (in most cases). Despite my support of buying things from the people who own them, I will concede that piracy generally offers better service, since you have unlimited content at your fingertips. The only case where piracy loses is for more obscure content that people may not be seeding, but will generally remain in circulation in the physical world.

Responses regarding ease of use, content distributors are the way to go. regarding actual content though, piracy comes out on top. if I want to watch some obscure or old movie, I doubt I would be able to find it on netflix for streaming or itunes to download. on the other hand I could simply visit a tracker and find it within seconds Better value with piracy. Some services are making pretty good progress. For example Steam with games, Netflix with movies, Spotify/Grooveshark with music. For most of these services though their downfall typically is ease of use (generally forced into using their applications or DRM), and variety of content. Netflix for example in the UK suffers from a severe lack of variety. To be decent they unfortunately need to near match the convenience and selection of filesharing, which is probably nigh-impossible legally. :/ It's mostly in the one place and lets face it, we all like sticking it to the man. You can't always be certain of quality when downloading pirated versions. Well I can download software, use it, if I don't like it I have lost nothing. If I don't use it much, I have not wasted money. If I spend 700 on software to use it once a week or even ocne a fortnight, what a waste of money. Thats assuming I could afford it in the first place. It's a faster and more reliable service. If you buy something and you lose it, you need to buy another one. If you get a digital version of it, you'll always have it. Not only this, but it's a good way of seeing the quality of a product rather than blind-buying it. I do not think about piracy that much to answer this question accordingly. I'm just poor and want what I can't afford. Wider audiences are gained, people are more likely to buy the full product. Online stores, especially Apple, offer an excellent service with massive selection. No DRM. Free. I can choose to pay if I like something so there is less chance of wasting my money.
