Montage
Description: Date:
This Project was meant to teach students how to blend photos within a montage. 2/15/2013

Course:

Comm130, Instructor: Caryn Esplin.

Programs used: Objectives: Process

Adobe Photoshop, Google Chrome

Gain experience in Photoshop with the masking tool, layer blending, and the typ1e tool

I selected the quote, then the images, starting with the background. Once I knew I needed a dragon picture, I searched out and collected that. I placed the background, and masked a filter on top of it, then removed the bottom portion of the filter. Then I placed the two faces overlapping each other, and masked them. After that was done I placed the sword, and masked it and blended everything. Once all that was done I placed the text, and fought the battle of making the color of the text work against a light, and dark, background. It was my hope to convey the meaning of the human inside the beast both being the same being. I also hoped the sword would give emphasis to the line in the quote dragons can be beaten.

This Project was meant to teach students how to take photos, and in filter use. 2/9/2013

Comm130, Instructor: Caryn Esplin.

Programs used: Objectives: Process

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge

Learn how selection works between layers, learn the importance of saving ones documentation often, and learn the powerful nature of the filter tool.

I first took several pictures of the subject, at different angles, then I evaluated the raw value of each photo trying to choose the best one to work with. After selecting the photo I would use, I placed it in photo shop and desaturated, and colorized it. After that step, I made a selection, and placed the oil paint filter on a large portion of the composition to give it a stronger focal point.

Flier
Description:
This Project was meant to teach the basics of design, on a black and white composition.

Date:

1/26/2013

Course:

Comm130, Instructor: Caryn Esplin.

Programs used:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives: Process

Learn how to create a Wordpress blog, learn the principle of if you dont know why, then dont, learn about the nature of gradients.

I created some sketches of my layout, and used them to decide how to proceed with my design. I misread the due dates on the assignment, so I didnt get the opportunity to get feedback from the class. But I utilized a few TAs and they gave some great feedback on padding, and white space. I tried to make everything in this composition matter to the viewer, with three focal points in case the viewer has only a few seconds to decide whether they are interested.

Logos
Description: Date:
This Project was meant to teach the basics of logo design. 2/23/2013

Course:

Comm130, Instructor: Caryn Esplin.

Programs used:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Learn how to use the pen tool efficiently, learn how to better incorporate type into a design without overpowering the logo, learn how to utilize imagination with a design.

Process

I began with the generalized logo for the company, incorporating the different points of this odd job contractor. The top logo wasnt difficult, but I wanted to give the client a more specific focus for the logo. So I used the other two logos as an exploration of type v.s. Illustration. I used the shape tools in order to create the pen and the stack of papers. I also used the pen tools to alter the type in the middle logo, just enough to be unique.

Letterhead
Description:
This project was meant for us to learn how stationary is designed, and how it should be.

Date:

3/2/2013

Course:

Comm130, Instructor: Caryn Esplin.

Programs used: Objectives: Process

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign

Learn how to properly link within InDesign, learn more about the compatibility between Adobe products, learn more about the Ins and outs of InDesign.

I found an image of a bubble popping online, traced it and manipulated the color with Adobe Illustrator. I then created a document in InDesign and added the different elements I needed: Company title, personal information, logo, and watermark. These elements are within both the letterhead and the business card. The business car also has a tag-line on the reverse side. This tagline is designed to force a question into the readers mind, and have them turn the card over thus reading the front of the card, instead of just glancing.

This Project was a culmination of what was learned over the semester 3/30/2013

Course:

Comm130, Instructor: Caryn Esplin.

Programs used: Objectives: Process

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Bridge

Learn how to handle printer malfunctions within adobe programs, learn more about the power of InDesign, learn about text wrapping images.

I began making this brochure, by taking pictures in Rexburg that make people think of Rexburg. During the selection of the photos, I wrote the content for the brochure. Once the two were complete, I used InDesign to create the trifold brochure. It was an odd experience, trying to make everything fit that I needed to do so. But the images and text turned out to fit pretty well within the confining space of the trifold. After I had competed that portion, there was still something missing, and I ended up creating the bubbles image for the inside leaf. I feel as though the image adds a playfulness to the brochure that it otherwise would not have.

This Project was to teach students how to design within Microsoft Word. 2/1/2013

Course:

Comm130, Instructor: Caryn Esplin.

Programs used:
Microsoft Word

Objectives: Process

Learn how to properly use a scanner, learn about the importance of Artistic license, learn about the versatile nature of Microsoft Word.

I started out with the photo of the apples, and a really ugly white blob in the corner. So, in order to not break the flow, I separated the photo into three pieces and set them as outlines of the information instead of the centerpieces. I then used color blending to remove all of the white from the background. After that I decided where I wanted to flow of text to be; and Finally I placed the two drawn apples as bullet points of the important information.

This Project was to teach students the basics of HTML and CSS.

3/16/2013

Course:

Comm130, Instructor: Caryn Esplin.

Programs used: Objectives: Process

Notepad++, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Learn how to create an image trace with Adobe; learn how to incorporate HTML and CSS together with aptness; learn about font choices between browsers. I created the html document by using the example photo on the class website. I added all the tags where I believed they should go, and the document turned out the way I had hoped. As for the CSS, I used the template file given for the class, and manipulated it to fit with a wrapper tag around the body of the page. I then changed most of the CSS properties to make the color and fonts what I needed them to be.
