Census population: 28 lakh, actual population: 50+ lakh City area: 440 sq km, Master Plan area: 1650 sq km 10th largest GDP producing city in India (PWC 2010) GDP size is nearly 20+ billion dollars 14 major sectors: Agriculture, Chemical, Leather, Plastics, Automobile, Garments - Hosiery, Aerospace, Ordinance, PanMasala, Paints, Education, Engineering Hardware, Healthcare and Media. Most of the industries are of small or medium size with a large number of cottage industries. Strategic location

Industries: Kanpur
There are 120 diff types of Mandies through which majority of goods are sold. These places provide 50% competitive price to retailers upto a distance of 500 km Most of the businesses are family business with no venture or outside funding Labor issues are big issues. A large number of industrial units got closed due to labor unrest Most of the industries do not want to spend any money on new technology or business practices or workers welfare. Relations are similar to British Era. Quality and Productivity are domains which are low cost approaches to improve conditions of industries There are a large number of industry-supporting institutions in Kanpur and most of them are dead or dysfunctional

There are a number of sector specific associations most of which are unorganized Most of the economic activities are owned and run by families Nearly 30,000 industrial units in the city with a good increasing rate.

Human resources
Most of the people are unorganized workers with a sizeable number of public sector employees Majority of population belong to poor and lower middle class. There is a good size of middle class. High class is largely insignificant. Education is the only source of economic mobility for most of the people Kanpur is an important education hub where large number of colleges and coaching institutions exist.
