The Sequence of Tenses III Time Clauses I A Short Theoretical Overview The Sequence of Tenses = a set of rules governing

the selection of verbal forms tenses or moods in certain types of subordinate clauses under the influence of a number of tenses or constructions in the main clause. In English the sequence of tenses generally applies to three types of subordinate clauses: direct object clauses, conditional clauses and the adverbial clauses of time. Adverbial clauses of time are introduced by conjunctions of time such as: after, as, as soon as, as /so long as, before, by the time, hardly . . . when, immediately, once, no sooner . . . than, since, the sooner, till/until, when, whenever, while Main Clause Time Clauses 1.Present Tense (simultaneousness): He will do it when he has time. 2. Present Perfect (anteriority) I shall give you a call when I have finished my class. 1. Past Tense (simultaneousness): Future-in-the-Past He promised he would do it when he had time. 2. Past Perfect Tense (anteriority): John said he would give me a call when he had finished his class. 1. Past Tense (simultaneousness): Past Tense When the storm started, I was in the back yard. 2. Past Perfect (anteriority) He went to bed after he had switched off all the lights. Past Tense - especially when the time clause is introduced by the conjunction when (correlated with the adverbs hardly or scarcely in Past Perfect the main clause) and than (correlated with the adverb no sooner in the main clause): We had hardly begun our talk (Hardly had we begun our talk), when someone knocked at the door.

Future Tense

I Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense.

1. When it (get) dark we'll have to stop. We can't work in the dark. 2. Go on till you (come) to a square with a statue in the middle; then turn left and you'll find the theatre on your right. 3.
