Recognizing a Stroke The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient within 3 hours which is tough. A bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

Ask the individual to SMILE. Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today) If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call for medical attention immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. Reduce Stress Easier said than done, but fortunately, stress-busters come in many forms. Some tips that may help:

Think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like (i.e., soak in a hot tub, walk on the beach or in a park, read a good book, visit a friend). Play with your pet. Stroking a dog or cat has been proven to lower blood pressure and relieve stress. Listen to soothing music. Watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Set It Up Taking the stairs not only helps slim your thighs and tighten your calves, but it could reduce your cholesterol as well. How low can it go? As much as 15% lower, according to a recent study that revealed that the benefits can come from as little as six minutes of climbing per day. What's more, researchers say this simple act of ascension also can make you 10% to 15% more fit. It doesn't matter if you stair-step on a machine at your gym or take the stairs in your office or home. The pay-off is about the same. A great way to fit this in is to do just 6 minutes of stairs before heading to your car or train in the evening after work. It might even be a welcomed break in the afternoon to get you up and moving after that lunch you scarfed down at noon. The local high school football stadium and the mall are also options. Symptoms of stroke Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

Ask the individual to smile. Ask him or her to raise both arms.
