PROFILE OF JAIPUR Projects A number of conservation initiatives for the walled city have been taken by international organizations, NGOs and local government authorities. A Heritage Management Plan was prepared by JVF and DRONAH for the JHERICO (Jaipur Heritage Committee) in 2007. The earlier Ford Foundation and INTACH listing was updated from 300 heritage structures to more than 1,000 structures within the boundaries of the New Master Plan. This listing/marking of the Heritage Zone now needs to be incorporated with the Master Plan. Through various projects and initiatives undertaken by the Government of Rajasthan, efforts have been made for the formulation of the Heritage Act. Accordingly, the draft heritage act was prepared in 2000, but it has not been approved by the government. This is also true of the Heritage Management Regulation for the walled city. Urban Planning projects have been undertaken in the city since 2000 through the commencement of Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure Project (RUIDP). Project components include water supply, wastewater management, solid waste management, urban transport and roads, emergency medical services, social infrastructure, slum improvement, support infrastructure for cultural heritage, urban drainage, community awareness and public participation (CAPP) and benefit monitoring and evaluation (BME). Conservation works include development of sites and services, including the restoration and conservation of historical Sites. Recent urban development initiatives include works that are under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). These include: Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS), Sanjay Nagar Bhatta Basti Relocation Plan, revitalization of the walled city in which the heritage cell within JMC is revived. Revitalization of the walled city is mainly concentrating on the infrastructure facilities within the walled city. A revitalization proposal for Chowkri Modikhana was prepared in 2004 under the Asia Urbs programme which has not been implemented. The Asian Development Bank project of infrastructure development that included the reuse of wells and repair work in the walled city and installation of sewage pipes was undertaken in 2001 by Jaipur Municipal Corporation. Operation Pink was undertaken by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation in 2001, aimed at the removal of encroachments in main commercial streets of the walled city. A Master Plan 2011 addressing the needs of the walled city was prepared by the JDA in 1998, of which a few works are in the process of being implemented. Proposals for the conservation and restoration works on heritage structures undertaken by the Avas Vikas Sansthan and Department of Tourism in 1995, which is pending implementation. A study of heritage buildings within the walled city was undertaken by the Ford Foundation and JDA in 1985, identifying 300 buildings for conservation. However, due to lack of legislation; some of these buildings have subsequently been totally altered or even demolished.
