GLOBAL POSITIONING SERVICES - DIFFERENTIAL GPS

veripos - standard

Veripos-standard is a GNSS augmentation service that delivers differential GPS correction data via satellite. The objective of the service is to provide high-end GPS users with reliable, improved position accuracy and integrity. Based upon L1 single-frequency CA Code observations, Veripos-standard provides metre level position accuracy by using a single-difference technique. Position accuracy will vary depending upon the users' distance from the reference stations and also how many stations are being used in the solution. The service consists of the following key elements: Reference stations Communications infrastructure Network control centre Satellite broadcast (space segment) Reference Station Network At the heart of the system are the reference stations, which are the source of the GPS measurement data. Each reference station is fully redundant with duplicated hardware, back-up power and sited in a secure, climatically controlled

environment. Latest techniques are used to ensure that station antennas are co-ordinated to an absolute accuracy of better than 5cm in all dimensions. Reference stations are located in a manner that ensures maximum coverage and redundancy throughout the key areas of offshore activity. Communications Infrastructure Each station generates raw GPS observations and other pertinent monitoring data, which is then sent to the NCC using multiple, high-speed data communication networks. Network Control Centre (NCC) The Network Control Centre (NCC) is the central hub at which the broadcast data products are produced. The NCC first determines whether any communication link problems exist followed by rectification. The station data is then processed and the data products produced; the Veripos standard service currently includes pseudo-range corrections derived from L1 code and phase observations for each satellite in view. Once fully checked and validated each data set is then cleared for broadcast.

NCC Monitoring The NCC, which is manned on a 24-hour basis, also monitors service availability and performance. Position solutions are calculated using all correction sets and comprehensive performance reports produced and stored. In the event of anomalies occurring, warning alarms are generated from which the NCC operators will inform the users. Regularly communicating with users, the NCC passes on information pertaining to service availability, changes to the core GNSS systems, station outages or planned maintenance operations. NCC features: 24-hour helpdesk Separate power feed from the main distribution to NCC Equipment fed from independent UPS's Emergency electrical generator. Smoke detection Complete PAT of NCC electrical sub-system Secure access Temperature stabilised environment Backup and auto switching hub computers System alarms 24/7 manning of NCC Design change control procedures Continuous integrity and performance monitoring Satellite Broadcast (space segment) Once NCC processing is complete, the final data products are passed to the Land-Earth Stations (LES) for uplink to the satellites and final broadcast to the users. The reliability of this process is critical and so multiple levels of redundancy are employed to guarantee arrival of the data at the LES. Veripos-standard data is broadcast from the satellites at two different power levels; High-Power (HP) and Low-Power (LP). The level of signal radiated by the high-power service means that reliable reception can be attained with a very small and compact omni-directional antenna, whilst the low-power signal requires a bigger stabilized antenna such as that used by a vessel's Inmarsat communications terminal. Data is received and passed to user-equipment via one of the Veripos range of satellite demodulators. User Segment Veripos-standard data is broadcast in RTCM SC104 - V2.3 format to ensure compatibility with user hardware and software. To give complete processing flexibility to the user, the correction data may be directly injected into any RTCM-compatible GPS equipment or external processing software allowing the user maximum choice regarding the position calculation process.
