Components and additives for superior quenching formulations

Polymer Quenching Fluids

Clariant is one of the leading suppliers of high-performance components and additives for polymer quenching fluids. As a key supplier to lubricant formulators, we understand our customers needs. The quality of our raw materials is the basis for the success of your formulation. Clariant understands that the only guarantee of long-term success is to deliver products with consistent quality and stable properties. To deliver the right solution for polymer quenching fluids requires a deep understanding of our customers problems and requirements. A clear and detailed description of our products is the first step toward building a sustainable business relationship.

Today, customers for polymer quenchants expect components and additives to provide a range of properties, including: Elimination of fire hazard Easy dilution in water and avoidance of water insoluble cracking products Long lifetime Excellent compatibility with other formulation components Global and long-term availability Easy and safe handling Versatile use of polymers for different quenching applications

Our products will deliver all these and contribute significantly to the success of your formulation, meeting and exceeding your own customers application requirements, for example: Controlling cooling rates by a balanced composition of the quenching fluid Achieving a wide range of quenching speeds due to flexible adjustment of the concentration Avoiding flammability and reducing risks of fire Reducing costs by using water as heat transfer fluid Easier cleaning of the work pieces Using formulations including high-quality biocides, neutralizing agents and corrosion inhibitors Long fluid lifetime Ensuring employee safety Reduced complexity of raw materials

We understand that meeting all these requirements will help your customers generate higher profits by: Lowering maintenance costs Increasing productivity Improving quality Addressing new market opportunities

Our understanding of sustainability and quality assurance requires that we know everything about our products where they come from and where they go.

1 Polymers for water-based quenchants

The polymer is the heart of any water-based quenchant because it is responsible for controlling the cooling rates and quenching speeds. Clariant is one of the worlds leading producers of water-soluble polyalkylene glycols (PAGs). Our strength is our diverse portfolio, covering all application-relevant requirements for polymeric quenching fluids. Common to all our products is their high quality standard, achieved through intensive research and development, modern production methods and constant quality monitoring. For hardening various types of steel and aluminum alloys, it is necessary to apply the right cooling parameters and quench speeds. In water-based systems, these parameters are adjusted by varying the concentration and molecular weights of the polymers. The concentration of polymer influences the thickness of the polymer film formed due to reverse solubility of the PAGs in water which is deposited on the surface of the workpiece during quenching. As the concentration increases, the maximum cooling rate decreases.

The following curves show the cooling rate [C/s] of different polymer dilutions, indicating the heat transfer of the polymer solution at any given temperature.

3 Biocides and neutralizing agent

Polymer quenchants are sensitive to attack by bacteria and fungi. The appropriate biocide is essential to control the presence of micro-organisms and the formation of biofilms in order to maintain the performance and lifetime of the fluid. As neutralizing agent, we recommend Genamin CH 020, a low-volatile tertiary amine with low leaching capacity.
