Cereza, tambin conocido como guinda, es el nombre del fruto de varios rboles del gnero Prunus, aunque comercialmente se aproveche un nmero limitado de especies. Al rbol se lo conoce como cerezo o guindo. Si bien todos las cerezos son del gnero Prunus, a ste pertenecen especies que no lo son, como el ciruelo, el almendro, el albaricoquero o damasco y el melocotonero o duraznero. La Cereza es una fruta rica en vitaminas A, B, C, E, K y PP, en hierro, calcio, magnesio, potasio y azufre. En Espaa se distingue como guinda al fruto de Prunus cerasus y como cereza al de Prunus avium, siendo en Amrica ms comn la denominacin cereza cida, para el primero y cereza dulce, para el segundo. No hay que confundir con otras especies denominadas vulgarmente como guindo; como Capsicum annuum (Mesoamrica), Eucryphia glutinosa (Patagonia), Nothofagus betuloides (Chile) y Nothofagus pumilio(Argentina).
Propiedades de la cereza
Nuestro amigo el Dr. Sergio Martnez Cullar nos enva este artculo sobre las propiedades de la Cereza. Dice as: "Las cerezas son los frutos del cerezo.El cerezo se cultiva en numerosas regiones y pases del mundo con clima templado, siendo los pases de mayor produccin Rusia, Estados Unidos, Alemania, Italia, Francia y Espaa. En nuestro pas, el valle del Jerte, en Cceres, es un rea de produccin tradicional. La cereza se ha considerado desde siempre como una de las mejores frutas para depurar el organismo y liberarlo de toxinas.
Las propiedades depurativas de esta fruta provienen de unas sustancias que pertenecen al grupo de los flavonoides, que son los que proporcionan los colores tan brillantes a muchas frutas. Estas sustancias llamadas antocianinas, son capaces de neutralizar los radicales libres que son los principales responsables de la aparicin de muchas enfermedades degenerativas. Entre sus funciones principales tambin se encuentra la proteccin de los capilares de la retina, por lo que desempea un papel fundamental en la conservacin de la vista. No menos importante resulta la accin de las antocianinas en la prevencin del envejecimiento de la piel y del cuidado de las uas y el cabello.
Estos componentes tienen la capacidad de neutralizar la accin de los radicales libres sobre el las clulas de la piel, de manera que nos protegen de la aparicin de arrugas, manchas, flaccidez y otras anomalas de este rgano y nos ayudan a mantener un aspecto ms joven. Estudios realizados en la Universidad de Arizona por el equipo de la doctora Cinthya Thomson sobre la composicin de esta fruta demostraron que la capacidad antioxidante de la cereza se debe a su alto contenido en antocianinas, con un contenido muy superior a otras frutas que tienen una gran reputacin de contener este mismo principio. Adems de las antocianinas, estos estudios demostraron que las cerezas eran muy ricas en otros componentes antioxidantes. Destacaban asmismo la gran riqueza en componentes de esta fruta comparado con el poco poder calrico que proporciona y recomendaban que fuese incluida en la dieta habitual como uno de los mejores alimentos depurativos y antioxidantes. De hecho la cereza figura en la lista del Departamento de Alimentacin de Estados Unidos como uno de los alimentos con ms poder antioxidante.
Es la fruta ideal para depurar el organismo, liberndolo de toxinas y de cido rico y ayudando a quitar grasa del organismo, por lo que se utiliza a veces como recurso para perder peso en las dietas de adelgazamiento. El uso de esta fruta resulta muy interesante para todas las personas, especialmente a las personas con artritis, con gota, a las personas con obesidad o las que sufren de hinchazn por edemas o de celulitis. Estas mismas propiedades las hacen muy adecuadas en la prevencin de los clculos de rin o de vescula. Dada la riqueza de esta fruta en hierro, calcio y zinc, ayudara a prevenir o combatir la anemia ferropnica (anemia por falta de hierro), la osteoporosis o debilitamiento seo y otros problemas en la formacin de los huesos o los dientes".

Cherry, also known as icing, is the name of the fruit of several trees of the genus Prunus, although commercially exploit a limited number of species. The tree is known as cherry or burgundy. While all the cherry trees are in the genus Prunus, belonging to this species are not, such as plum, almond, apricot or peach or apricot and peach. Cherry has always been considered as one of the best fruits to cleanse the body of toxins and free.
