Course Outline
Introduction We start the course with a brief Introduction to the PMI Project Process: this lesson covers the fundamentals of the Project Management Institutes best practice methods for managing a project as far as processes and procedures are concerned.

Lesson 1 P6 Introduction and Navigation Lesson 1 gets you started with Primavera P6 professional by giving you a thorough overview of the interface and views you will be using throughout the rest of this course. Primavera is a vastly capable system with many views, features and concepts that must be understood in order to get the most out of using the tool. At the completion of this lesson you will understand how to navigate Primavera P6. You will also be aware of its enterprise capabilities and how it is well suited to multiuser, multiproject environments. You will understand its architecture and general capabilities; its menus and tool bars and how to personalize the interface for your particular needs. Lesson 2 Working with Project Schedules In this lesson you will start working with the Primavera P6 software and understanding the concept of opening projects in order to see and edit their data. In Primavera P6 a project must be opened before you can edit the schedule data. You will learn how to open one or more projects for editing and then close the projects when you are done. You will also learn how to create a new project and prepare it for entering activities and other schedule data that will make up the heart of the project plan. The sample project you will be building is a simple construction project that will give you all the fundamental skills for using P6 in the real world. Lesson 3 Work Breakdown Structure In this lesson you will be introduced to the concept of a Work Breakdown Structure or WBS. You will then learn how to create a WBS within the WBS view of Primavera P6. You will understand how to build the hierarchy of the structure and how it is used to help manage and report on the schedule data throughout the lifecycle of the project. Lesson 4 Activities Lesson 4 introduces you to Primavera P6 activities. Activities are the key part of any project schedule. They describe the work to be done, when it will start and how long it will take to complete the work. Activities can also hold other data items such as resource assignments, which in turn can be used to generate cost information. You will learn about the various attributes you can assign to activities, such as their type; i.e. Start Milestone, Finish Milestone, Task Dependent, Level of Effort and so on. You will see how activities are created and modified to model the plan of the project and ultimately to help predict the final delivery date for the project. Lesson 5 Relationships and Constraints Lesson 5 introduces you to the concept of relationships between activities. A vital part of scheduling is the ability to describe how activities are dependent on each other as the work proceeds. Primavera P6 provides four standard methods for linking one activity to another in order that the work proceeds in a logical way. You will learn how to assign different relationship types to activities and then introduce further important information such as adding a delay or lag between activities. You will also learn how to assign constraint dates to an activity to describe certain key delivery date within the schedule.

Lesson 6 Critical Path Method Lesson 6 takes a close look at the concept of time analysis and the process of performing a forward and backward pass on a schedule to help the manager understand the earliest and latest dates that work can be performed. This is known formally as critical path method; the process of calculating the optimum start and finish dates for all the activities in the network based upon their relationships to one another. In P6 the forward and backward pass are performed for you using a process known as Scheduling. In this video you will see explanations and examples of how the scheduling tools will help the manager understand the flow of work and the planned dates for the entire project. Lesson 7 Resources Lesson 7 introduces you to P6 resource creation and assignment. A resource is a person, some materials or equipment that needs to be included in the schedule. Because resources in one form or another are almost exclusively the items that create cost for the project, they play a vital role in the bidding, planning and execution phases of the project. In this video you will learn how to create new resources in Primavera P6 and add planned costs to them. You will then see how to assign the resources to activities in the schedule and control how they are handled by P6 using an activity attribute known as Duration Type. At the completion of this lesson you will be ready to resource load P6 project schedules. Lesson 8 Baselines Lesson 8 introduces you to the concept of using baselines to capture the initial project plan and then use this to measure performance once the project is under way. Primavera P6 provides a range of baseline capabilities to meet the needs of any project. You will learn how to use the baseline features of P6 to capture the initial plan and then track variance as the project is changed by the actual work achieved. At the completion of this video you will have all the necessary skills to correctly use baselines and the benefits they offer the project manager. Lesson 9 Project Status Lesson 9 explains the fundamentals of entering and tracking progress data as the project gets under way. Primavera P6 allows you to enter actual start, actual finish dates and the percentage of completion that has been achieved on schedule activities. Combined with a solid understanding of the P6 data date, these values enable you to find out just how well the project is progressing compared to the original plan and to forecast the planned start and complete dates of future work based upon current progress. In this video you will see how Layouts can be used to help you setup a view for entering your progress data; making the process easier and faster. At the completion of this lesson you will understand all the basic principles for reporting project progress and estimates to completion for your project schedule. Lesson 10 Publishing and Reporting Lesson 10 provides you with all the basic principles for reporting your data to the project stakeholders. It includes instructions on creating graphical reports using Layouts and tabular reports using the Reports view and Report Wizard.

Another vital skill you will acquire during this lesson is the use of Filters to control the data you include on the screen or in reports. You can also use Grouping and Sorting features to organize your data on screen to meet the most demanding reporting requirements. Lesson 11 Exporting and Importing Project Data Lesson 11 looks at ways to export your project data to Primavera P6 users on other systems. Using various formats, you can share your project with schedulers on an independent Primavera P6 system or even share your data with someone using Microsoft Project, P3 and others. At the completion of this lesson you will have all the necessary skills to both export and import project data from other systems. Lesson 12 Global, Project and Resource Calendars At the heart of every project in P6 are one or more calendars that control the working and nonworking periods for a project. In this lesson you will learn how to create and modify the calendars that you have been using throughout this training course. At the completion of this lesson you will understand how to modify existing calendars, create new calendars and assign different calendars to the activities within a project schedule. Bonus Chapter - Primavera P6 Visualizer In this chapter you will to learn how create, modify and then save layouts for the TSLD or Gantt chart using Primavera P6 Visualizer. You will see how to use the various columns, grouping and sorting tabs in the options area to modify the data you are seeing on the screen. Finally youll see how to use the Print Preview tools to produce elegant looking graphical reports.
