M. S. and Ph. D.

@ BTCM, IIT Madras

Building Technology & Construction Management (BTCM) Division Department of Civil Engineering Why pursue Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) in BTCM Division?
Todays construction industry is in dire need of feasible solutions for complex engineering and management challenges/issues. The M.S. & Ph.D. programmes in Building Technology & Construction Management (BTCM) Division are designed to nurture future industrial experts, researchers and academicians to meet these demands. The BTCM Division was established in the late 1970s, and with world-class laboratories and faculty, the BTCM division is arguably the best place in India to pursue research in Building Science, Concrete Technology and Construction Management. The unique combination of 13 faculty members with expertise in the relevant areas exposes the students to an interdisciplinary research culture.

What are the possible career options?

After M.S. - A highly motivated and talented student can
complete the M.S. programme in about 2 years. The M.S. programme focusses on research unlike the course-loaded M. Tech programme. The students enjoy a flexible schedule while attending courses relevant to his/her field of study. Upon graduation, students can pursue a career in industry or in teaching or research in renowned universities in India and abroad. Upon exceptional performance, an M.S. student will become eligible to upgrade to a direct Ph.D. programme.

CONCRETE MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

Fly ash aggregates Aerated & foam concrete Self compacting concrete Fibre reinforced concrete Cement chemistry & microstructure Non-destructive evaluation Durability & performance specifications Maintenance & repair of concrete structures Corrosion & service life prediction of concrete structures Structural reliability of segmental concrete bridges

After Ph.D. - Ph.D. scholars are future academicians, who

can have significant influence on the quality of the future civil engineers. They can also pursue a career in high-end industrial research & consultancy. One can complete Ph.D. in about 4 years - depending on the nature of the research topic and the passion & zeal exhibited by the student. With excellent research facilities and training available within our division, Ph.D. scholars find it easy to get faculty and research positions in well-reputed institutions in India and abroad. In addition, the BTCM Division is also a popular Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) centre for faculty of other engineering colleges. CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING & MANAGEMENT
