Enclosed is an application form for the Burlington County Central Labor Councils H.B. Scoop Slack Memorial Scholarship.

This year, we will be awarding four scholarships for $1,000.00. Any high school senior, who will be attending a college or university, or continuing their education in an approved trade or technical school, is eligible, provided that the student is a child of current or deceased member of a union affiliated with the Burlington County Central Labor Council. To qualify for eligibility, all applications must reflect verification of Union Membership, and all required documentation must be postmarked no later than May 12, 2013 and be submitted to the Scholarship Committee at the following Address: Scholarship Committee Burlington County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO C/O Orlando R. New Jersey, in the school year of 2013 I understand that I am personally responsible for (a) securing proof of eligibility for the scholarship, as set forth below; (b) submitting verification of my class rank and SAT scores, as reflected on the attached Academic Verification form; (c) arranging for the submission of an official High School Transcript; and (d) preparing an essay, of not less than 150 words, in response to the following question: Recently, Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey vetoed a bill to raise the minimum wage, which included an annual cost of living increase. This cost of living increase would be determined by the annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) for that period of time and this percentage would have been added to the established minimum wage going forward. What would have been the advantages or disadvantages of raising the minimum wage? What effect do you think it will have on New Jerseys economy and the half million workers presently on minimum wage?
