Complete: prepare work for presentation or exhibition. Specific Lesson Objective: The Chancellor for UMass Dartmouth has asked Dartmouth High School to do a mural in the Dartmouth High School cafeteria, by Dartmouth High School Students. This is to commemorate the Chancellors inauguration. The students will be required to collaborate on an idea, come up with sketches and a final idea, transfer to board, cut out and paint. This will be on permanent display in the Dartmouth High School cafeteria. Essential Questions: What is collaboration? What directions, roads or pathways will you and your classmates pursue? How can you describe this on a 2D 3D surface? How can you all work together to communicate your ideas and effectively translate them to the mural surface? Assesment of Learning: Students successfully collaborate and complete mural project by following the above standards and completing the project on time. ( April 12th 2012 ) Essential Question: What is collaboration and how do you achieve it

Guiding Questions: Which muralists are you familiar with? Do any inspire you? What mediums do you think would work best with our mural project? Should you break the mural into sections and work on it in groups? Can you see a possibility of a 3D mural, layered in a collage-like manner? Problem or Activity: Students choosing to participate have the opportunity to leave a creative and lasting mark at Dartmouth High School. This collaboration should bring students together to ponder the idea of the many paths, destinies and destinations possible and available in their near future. Together they will discuss, decide, execute scale and form, and then work collectively to build, paint and create what is sure to be a lasting and beautiful piece of art for the school. Motivation: Students will be shown power point presentations of artists such as Red Grooms, Escher, Diego Rivera etc. We will provide them with as many visual cues and references as we can. Students will be encouraged to think big and freely, while adhering to the subject matter. Student will have a very large surface to work on and can choose the way in which theyd like to approach that surface. Resources: Cafeteria Wall. Plywood panel which will be screwed into wall. Paints, pencils, paper, crayons, etc. Students will have 4 to 6 weeks to complete this project. Sketches will begin this week at the school. A large mural sketch will be done, most likely during school hours, but possibly after school. We are still in the process of carving out time slots. It seems as though the majority of this project will be completed on weekends and during the Spring Break. This will be an evolving lesson plan and one I will continue to build and tweak as we progress with the project. Im hoping it will serve as a good guideline for future mural projects! Linda Dempsey
