Livingstone's Stinson, Harvard's
Amaker win Gaines Awards
SALISBURY, NC Head coach James
Stinson of Livingstone College has been
named Division II winner of the third annual
Clarence 'Big House' Gaines College Basket-
ball Coach of the Year Award, presented to the
top minority college basketball coach in NCAA
basketball. Harvard's Tommy Amaker won the
Division I award. The announcement was made
by Dave Goren, executive director of the Na-
tional Sportscasters and Sportswriters Associa-
tion & Hall of Fame (NSSA).
Stinson's recently-completed ninth season
as head coach at Livingstone was the best in
school history. The Blue Bears won their frst
CIAA Southern Division Championship, set a
school record for most wins (22), reached the
championship game of the CIAA Tournament,
and qualifed for their frst NCAA Tournament
appearance.
In the six seasons since taking over as head
coach of Harvard's century-old men's basket-
ball program, Amaker has turned the Crimson
into an Ivy League and regional power. He has
directed Harvard to a period of unprecedented
prosperity in the form of back-to-back NCAA
tournament appearances, three consecutive Ivy
League championships and four 20-win seasons
in a row.
The Gaines Awards, honor the last Win-
ston-Salem State head coach who amassed 828
wins in 47 seasons leading the Rams including
the 1967 NCAA Div. II national championship.
Gaines is a former president of the National As-
sociation of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and
was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall
of Fame in 1982. He died in 2005.
The awards will be presented as part of the
53rd Annual NSSA Awards Banquet, June 11th,
at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC.
Grambling legend Hopkins in
Basketball Hall of Fame
GRAMBLING, La. (GSU Sports Informa-
tion) Grambling State University (GSU)
basketball legend Bob Hopkins has been named
as a member of the National Collegiate Basket-
ball Hall of Fame induction class of 2013.
As a player, Hopkins averaged 30 points
and 17 rebounds a game for the Tigers from
1953-56. He was a two-time National Associa-
tion of Intercollegiate Athletics All-American
under Eddie Robinson who was not only
Grambling's football coach but also the Tigers'
basketball coach at the time and was inducted
into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1961. Hopkins,
who helped to lead the Tigers to two conference
championships, is GSU's all time leading scorer
and rebounder.
"This is a true honor," said Hopkins.
"When I got the call I thought they were pulling
my leg at frst. I am truly honored by this."
While at GSU, Hopkins re-wrote the uni-
versity and national record books. Hopkins
was the frst 1000-point scorer in NCAA his-
tory. While in college Hopkins led the team in

scoring all four years. He had 3,759 points and
2,191 rebounds while at GSU.
As a 6-8 freshman in 1952-53, Hopkins
averaged 28 points and 17 rebounds per game.
The following summer, Bill Russell, then at-
tending the University of San Francisco, tried
to pursuade Hopkins to transfer. Robinson and
Grambling PR legend Collie Nicholson, talked
him out of it.
After his career at Grambling, Hopkins
played in the NBA for the Syracuse Nationals
for fve years.
Not only was Hopkins a success on the foor
as a player, but he was also a success as a coach.
He won SWAC titles while at Alcorn, South-
ern and at Grambling and had several 20-win
seasons at Xavier. At GSU he won the SWAC
regular season title in the 1988-89 year. He later
joined Russell's staff with the Seattle Superson-
ics. Hopkins was inducted into the Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame as a player and as a coach.
The Class of 2013 will be inducted into the
National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame
Sunday, November 24, 2013, at the Midland
Theatre in Kansas City as part of a three-day
celebration of college basketball. The hall of
fame is located in the College Basketball Expe-
rience, a world-class entertainment facility that
provides a multi-faceted interactive experience
for fans of the game.
