The GMAT

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) measures general verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that are developed over a long period of time. It is designed to help graduate schools of business assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. GMAT scores are used by nearly 1,300 graduate management programs throughout the world, and about 850 schools require GMAT scores from each applicant. GMAT scores are only one predictor of academic performance in the first year of graduate management school. The GMAT does not presuppose any specific knowledge of business or other specific content areas. It does not measure achievement in any particular subject area. International students should note that the GMAT is entirely in English and all instructions are provided in English.

WHAT COMPUTER SKILLS DO I NEED?


Minimal computer skills are required to complete the GMAT CAT. Before beginning the test youll complete a tutorial that covers using a mouse, entering a response, using the word processor, accessing the help function, and moving on to the next question. Youll also be able to access the help function at any time during testing.

WHAT ARE CONDITIONS LIKE AT A TEST CENTER?


The CAT is administered in an individualized environment in the quiet and privacy of separated testing stations. You will have the opportunity to take two five-minute breaks, one after completing the essays and another between the quantitative and verbal sections.

The GMAT
The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that is available, year-round, at test centers throughout the world. However, the GMAT program recognizes the fact that the GMAT CAT is not available in a limited number of countries. If you are located in a country that does not currently offer the GMAT CAT and you cannot travel to another country to take the test, please contact us, by using any of the communication methods listed in the Customer Service section on page 6, and advise us of your circumstances. It may be possible to make arrangements to open a supplementary test center in your country. WHAT IS A COMPUTER-ADAPTIVE TEST?
In a computer-adaptive test, the computer screen displays one question at a time, which is chosen from a very large pool of questions categorized by content and difficulty. The first question is always of medium difficulty. The selection of each question thereafter is determined by your responses to all previous questions. In other words, the CAT adjusts to your ability level youll get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you. The CAT requires you to enter an answer for each question, and you may not return to or change your response to any previously answered question. If you guess a correct answer or answer a question incorrectly by mistake, your answers to subsequent questions will lead you back to questions that are at the appropriate level of difficulty for you.

HOW DOES THE GMAT CAT WORK?


The GMAT CAT includes verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing questions that youll answer on a computer. You will have 75 minutes for 37 quantitative questions, 75 minutes for 41 verbal questions, and 30 minutes for each of the two analytical writing topics. Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving questions will be mingled within the quantitative section, and Sentence Correction, Reading Comprehension, and Critical Reasoning questions will be mingled within the verbal section. The verbal and quantitative sections of the GMAT CAT are computer-adaptive, as described above. You will key in your essay responses to the two analytical writing questions.

Fees
Test fees for the GMAT may vary according to the country in which the test will be administered. You can obtain current test fee and other service fee information on our Web site, by contacting the Regional Registration Center (RRC) for the country in which you will be testing, or by using any of the other communication methods listed under the Customer Service section.

Scheduling Your Appointment


U.S., U.S. TERRITORIES, PUERTO RICO, CANADA INTERNATIONAL LOCATIONS You may register for the GMAT by phone, fax, or mail. Refer to the International Test Center list beginning on page 10 and contact the Regional Registration Center (RRC) associated with your country to schedule your CAT appointment. Be advised that in some countries the GMAT may be offered only once a year, so planning is essential. If you are faxing or mailing your request, complete the International Test Scheduling Form located in the center of the Bulletin.

By Phone With Credit Card


You can register for the GMAT by phone. If you dont have a credit card, you can register through the mail. When you register through the mail, you will obtain a voucher that will permit you to schedule a testing appointment by making a phone call to a registration or test center. Vouchers may only be used for testing in the U.S., U.S. territories, and Puerto Rico. Note: You may not take the GMAT more than one time in any calendar month, even if you have taken the test and canceled your scores. If you test more than once in a calendar month, your new scores will not be reported and your test fee will be forfeited.

Fax: The RRC fax number for the country in which you plan
to test is listed on page 10. Complete the International Test Scheduling Form and fax it to the appropriate RRC. Your request must include payment by either VISA, MasterCard, or American Express. The form must be received at least seven days prior to your first choice test date. Your confirmation number, reporting time, and test center address will be faxed or mailed to you. If you do not receive a confirmation, call the RRC two business days prior to your first-choice test date.

By Mail
Complete the CAT Voucher Request Form in the center of this publication and mail your completed form, with appropriate payment, to the address listed on page 6. If possible, please use a standard business letter envelope to mail your form, and remember to include your return address on the outside of the envelope. Allow two to four weeks for processing and delivery. Once you have received your voucher, you may call to schedule an appointment. Requests received at ETS without the registration fee will be returned.

Mail: The RRC mailing address for the country in which you
plan to test is listed on page 10. Complete the International Test Scheduling Form and mail it with proper payment (including applicable taxes) to the appropriate RRC. If possible, please use a standard business letter envelope to mail your form. Remember to apply appropriate postage, and to include your return address on the outside of the envelope. The form must be received at least three weeks prior to your first-choice test date. If you do not receive a confirmation, call the RRC two business days prior to your first-choice test date.

ATTENTION!
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: If you require nonstandard testing accommodations, please refer to Test Takers with Disabilities on page 6. U.S. MILITARY PERSONNEL: Before making an appointment to take the GMAT you should contact your education service officer or navy campus adviser.

Rescheduling or Canceling Your Appointment


If you decide to reschedule your test appointment, you must contact the registration center (in the U.S. you may contact the test center directly) no later than seven calendar days prior to your scheduled appointment or your test fee will be forfeited. You will be charged a rescheduling service fee for each appointment that you choose to reschedule. The rescheduling fee is subject to change without notice. Note: International appointments cannot be rescheduled between test sites served by different RRCs (e.g., Paris to Melbourne). If you decide to cancel your test appointment, you must contact the registration center (in the U.S. you may contact the test center directly) no later than seven calendar days prior to your scheduled appointment or your test fee will be forfeited. You will receive a partial refund of your test fee if your cancellation request is received at least seven days prior to your scheduled appointment. Refunds are made in U.S. dollars. If you paid by credit card, your account will be credited. Refund amounts are subject to change without notice.

Report to the test center at least 30 minutes early for check-in procedures. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted and your fee will be forfeited. When you arrive at the test be prepared with valid photobearing identification (see below) the name of the institution(s) to which you want your scores sent your authorization voucher from ETS, if you requested one (see page 7) IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS You must have acceptable and valid identification (ID) to be admitted to a test center. Your ID must bear your name as given at the time your test appointment was made, a recent, recognizable photograph, and your signature. If your ID is questioned by the test administrator, be prepared to present a second ID bearing your signature and either a photograph or physical description. Acceptable forms of ID include valid passport (required for examinees testing in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan), drivers license, employee ID card, national identity card, military ID card, and student ID card (if using a student ID card, you must also present a second form of ID). Unacceptable forms of ID include Social Security card, draft classification card, and credit cards of any kind. If you do not have valid photobearing ID, you may ask an official at the institution you attend/attended to verify your identity on official letterhead stationery; affix a photo to the letter; and have the title, signature, and institution seal overlap the photo. affix a recent photo of yourself on a blank piece of paper, indicate your physical description, sign the paper, and have it notarized; the seal must overlap the photo. Note: When there is an apparent discrepancy in photo identification, ETS will not release official score reports. The test scores will be canceled and the test fee will be forfeited.

CENTER PROCEDURES AND REGULATIONS No testing aids are permitted in the testing room. These include but are not limited to beepers, pens, calculators, watch calculators, books, pamphlets, rulers, highlighter pens, stereos or radios with headphones, cellular phones, watch alarms (including those with flashing lights or alarm sounds), dictionaries, translators, any other electronic or photographic devices. The test center administrator is authorized to dismiss you from a test session for attempting to take the test for someone else; failing to provide acceptable identification; creating a disturbance; giving or receiving unauthorized help; eating and drinking during the test; using notes, books, calculators, wristwatch calculators, digital assistants, or other aids; attempting to remove scratch paper from the testing room; attempting to tamper with the operation of the computer; attempting to remove test questions (in any format) from the testing room; or failing to follow the administrators directions. You may be photographed or videotaped at the test center. This does not replace the photo ID requirements. You will be asked to write and sign a confidentiality statement at the test center. Your signature is required. If you do not sign the statement, you will not be permitted to take the test. The administrator will provide you with scratch paper that may be replaced as needed during testing. You may not remove this paper from the testing room at any time. You may not take your own scratch paper to the test. Test takers will be assigned seats. Raise your hand and notify the administrator if you believe you have a problem with your computer, need more scratch paper, or need the administrator for any other reason. You may not eat, drink, or use tobacco during the administration. Failure to comply with an administrators directions can result in your test being canceled. If this should be necessary, no scores will be reported for this test, and no fees will be refunded.

Your GMAT Scores

Selecting Your Score Report Recipient(s)


Before you begin to take the test, you will have an opportunity to select up to five graduate schools to receive copies of your score report. Once you have confirmed your selection you will not be able to make changes, deletions, or additions. The list of graduate schools is presented in alphabetical order. Please note that graduate schools are listed under the name of the college or university with which they are associated, e.g., Baruch College is listed as CUNY, Baruch College. You should also be aware that abbreviations are used, e.g., the United States Air Force Academy is listed as US Air Force Academy. If you cannot locate a graduate school in the list but the institution has instructed you to submit your GMAT scores as part of their application process, ask the test administrator for a GMAT Score Report Request Form. Complete this form and return it to the test administrator before you leave the center.

Repeating the Test


You may not take the GMAT more than one time in any calendar month, even if you have taken the test and canceled your scores. If you test more than once in a calendar month, your new scores will not be reported and your test fee will be forfeited. Sometimes it is necessary to take the GMAT more than one time. For example, a management school may request more recent scores than you currently have on record. However, unless your scores seem unusually low compared with other indicators of your preparation for graduate management study, or unless there are other reasons to believe that you did not do your best on a test for which scores have been reported, taking the GMAT again may not be helpful. It is unlikely to result in a substantial increase in your scores, and, in fact, your scores may decrease. If you repeat the test, your scores from the latest test date and the two most recent tests taken in the last five years will be reported to the institutions you designate as score recipients. If you repeat the test and want to send scores to the same schools as for previous administrations, you must reenter the school codes where requested or submit a new Additional Score Report Request form.

Getting Your Scores


Upon completing the computer-adaptive GMAT, you can choose to see your scores at the test center for the multiple-choice sections of the test. An official score report, including scores for the Analytical Writing Assessment, will be mailed to you and your designated institutions about two weeks after testing. If you do not finish the multiple-choice sections, your score will depend on the number of questions you answer. You must respond to both essays and each multiplechoice section of the test to get an official score report.

Additional Score Reporting


Your test fee covers the release of your score report to up to five graduate schools selected by you on the day of the test. If you want to have your scores sent to more than five graduate schools, or, if you later decide that you want your score report sent to other graduate schools, you must use the Additional Score Reporting Service. You will be charged a fee for each additional score report requested. Requests received without payment will be returned. Reports are processed within three working days after the request is received. You will receive a confirmation score report listing the additional institutions you requested. Recipients indicated on an Additional Score Report Request form cannot be changed or deleted.

Canceling Your Scores


Scores will not be canceled at your request for any reason once they have been reported. However, ETS will honor your request to cancel scores immediately after the test administration. Score cancellations will be reported to the institutions that you have selected as score report recipients. Indicate your decision to cancel on the computer screen immediately following the last section of the test. This is the only time that you will have the opportunity to cancel your scores. Other requests to cancel scores will not be honored. Scores will not be reinstated if you choose to cancel them.
Notes: ETS cannot honor requests for partial cancellation of scores, for example, cancellation of your GMAT analytical writing score but not your quantitative score. Your fee will not be refunded if you have your test scores canceled. If you cancel your scores the cancellation will be reported to all score recipients that you designated. The score cancellation designation will be part of your permanent record and reported on all future score reports.

CANCELLATION OF SCORES BY ETS Test Security Issues. Educational Testing Service strives to report scores that accurately reflect the performance of every test taker. Accordingly, ETSs standards and procedures for administering tests have two primary goals: giving test takers equivalent opportunities to demonstrate their abilities, and preventing some test takers from gaining an unfair advantage over others. To promote these objectives, ETS reserves the right to cancel any test score when, in ETSs judgment, a testing irregularity occurs, there is an apparent discrepancy in a test takers identification, the test taker engages in misconduct, or the score is invalid for another reason. Reviews of scores by ETS are confidential. When, for any of the above reasons, ETS cancels a test score that has already been reported, it notifies score recipients that the score has been canceled, but it does not disclose the reason for cancellation unless authorized to do so by the test taker. Testing Irregularities. Testing irregularities refers to problems with the administration of a test. When testing irregularities occur, they may affect an individual or groups of test takers. Such problems include, without limitation, administrative errors (such as improper timing, improper seating, defective materials, and defective equipment); improper access to test content; and other disruptions of test administrations (such as natural disasters and other emergencies). When testing irregularities occur, ETS may decline to score the test, or cancel the test score. When it is appropriate to do so, ETS gives affected test takers the opportunity to take the test again as soon as possible without charge. Identification Discrepancies. When, in ETSs judgment or the judgment of test center personnel, there is a discrepancy in a test takers identification, the test taker may be dismissed from the test center; in addition, ETS may decline to score the test or cancel the test score. Misconduct. If, in ETSs judgment, a test taker engages in misconduct in connection with a test, ETS may dismiss the test taker from the test center, decline to score the test, or cancel the test score. Misconduct includes, but is not limited to the following: obtaining improper access to the test, a part of the test, or information about the test referring to, looking through, or working on any test, or test section, other than during the testing period for that test or test section using any prohibited aids in connection with the test taking food or drink into the testing room leaving the testing room without permission attempting in any manner to remove from the test room any test materials or notes relating to the test attempting to give or receive assistance, or otherwise communicate, in any form, with another person about the test, during the test administration attempting to take the test for someone else creating a disturbance failing to following any of the test administration regulations described in this Bulletin, given by the test administrator, or specified in any test materials Invalid Scores. ETS may also cancel scores if, in its judgment, there is substantial evidence that they are invalid for any other reason. Before canceling scores pursuant to this paragraph, ETS notifies the test taker in writing about its concerns, gives the test taker an opportunity to submit information that addresses ETSs concerns, considers any such information submitted, and offers the test taker a choice of options. The options include voluntary score cancellation, a free retest, or arbitration in accordance with ETSs standard Arbitration Agreement. In addition, the test taker is sent a copy of the booklet Why and How Educational Testing Service Questions Test Scores, which explains this process in greater detail. (This booklet is available to any test taker at any time on request.) Note: The retest option is not available outside the United States or Canada. The arbitration option is available only for tests administered in the United States. RELEASING YOUR SCORES ETS recognizes the right of individuals to privacy with regard to information supplied by and about them that may be stored in ETS files and the concomitant responsibility to safeguard information in its files from unauthorized disclosure. Confidentiality guidelines established by ETS and agreed to by the Graduate Management Admission Council have been in effect for many years. To protect your right to control the distribution of your scores, reports will be released only at your specific request; every recipient must be designated by you. ETS will not release any data at the request of institutions or fellowship agencies except for use in research studies that are approved by the Graduate Management Admission Council and that preserve your anonymity and that of the institution(s) you have attended.

Because scores that are more than five years old present special interpretation problems, many institutions will not accept them. At your request, the GMAT program will release scores for tests you took between October 1979 and June 1994 but will send with the score report a statement indicating the special nature of the scores. Some institutions may require applicants to take the GMAT again and supply more current scores. All data retained at ETS are subject to GMAC policies on confidentiality described in this Bulletin. GMAT scores are measurement information. They are not the property of the examinee, but the use, reporting, and cancellation of scores are subject to various rights and restrictions as indicated in this Bulletin. HOW SCHOOLS USE AND INTERPRET SCORES GMAT scores have two important characteristics: They are reliable measures of certain developed skills that have been found to be important in the study of management at the graduate level. In repeated studies, GMAT scores have been consistently found to be good, although imperfect, predictors of academic success in the first year of study at graduate schools of management. Unlike undergraduate averages, which vary in their meaning according to the grading standards of each institution, GMAT scores are based on the same standard for all examinees. Graduate Schools of Management: The Graduate Management Admission Council has published guidelines for the use of GMAT scores. The guidelines are provided to all graduate management schools that use GMAT scores and are included on page 30. Since the test does not measure all the characteristics related to success in graduate school, admissions officers use GMAT scores as one kind of information about an applicant. Evidence indicates that the undergraduate record is generally at least as good a predictor of success as the test scores, and most schools give it as much weight as the scores. An admissions officer may even discount mediocre test scores when they are counterbalanced by good grades from an institution in which he or she has confidence. Information about your character, your interest in management, and your willingness to apply yourself as obtained from your application, interviews, and letters of recommendation is also considered. Each school evaluates the scores in its own way; there are no set passing or failing scores. Your performance can be related to that of the original 1954 scales, the total testing population for the past three years (percentile scores), or others applying to the same school (local norms). Undergraduate Institutions: Your undergraduate adviser receives your scores if you so designate and if your school participates in the Undergraduate Roster Service. By evaluating your scores and your undergraduate record and average, your adviser can make sound recommendations about your opportunities for graduate study in management and may be able to suggest schools that would be the most suitable for you. If you are unsure whether to have your scores sent to your undergraduate institution, check with your undergraduate counseling office. RESCORING SERVICE FOR ESSAYS If you have reason to believe that your essay scores are not accurate, you may request that your essays be rescored. For a fee of $45 your essays will be rescored by independent readers. Requests for rescoring must be made within six months of your test date. A request received more than six months after the test date will not be honored. The multiple-choice sections of the test cannot be rescored. You may request this service by either telephone or fax if paying by credit card. Otherwise, enclose a check made payable to ETS-GMAT with your GMAT registration/identification number, your date of birth, and your Social Security number (if you included it in your biographical information). Also, explain why you feel rescoring is necessary. Mail your request to GMAT, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6102, Princeton, NJ 08541-6102 and on your letter note: Attention: GMAT Rescoring Service. Rescoring may result in increases or decreases in your scores. If there is a discrepancy between the original and the later scores, ETS rescoring results will be final. Revised results will be sent to you and the management schools you designated. You will be notified of the results of the rescoring within about three weeks of receipt of your request at ETS. GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION SEARCH SERVICESM (GMASSSM) The Graduate Management Admission Search Service helps you become aware of full-time and part-time graduate programs, admissions procedures, and financial aid opportunities offered by institutions. Test takers are chosen to receive a particular schools mailings because their background characteristics match those the schools look for in applicants for admission. You are automatically included in GMASS unless you notify ETS no later than three days following your test date. IMPORTANT: If the form is not properly filled out (contains incomplete information, unclear letters, or non-English characters), it MAY cause a delay in your registration and appointment scheduling. Please read the instructions carefully.

Completing the Form


Use black ink. The name given on the form must match the name on the identification document that will be presented at the test center.

Payment Information
You can fax or mail the form if you pay with a credit card or supply a voucher number. You must mail the form if submitting a check or other physical payment. For a list of acceptable currencies, see page 6 in the Bulletin.

If faxed, the RRC must receive the form at least seven days prior to your first-choice test date if scheduling at a permanent center. If scheduling at a mobile center, the form must be received by the 15th day of the month preceding the month in which you plan to test. Be sure to include your credit card information. Fax it to the appropriate RRC (see page 10 in the Bulletin for fax numbers).

Scheduling Process
When scheduling your appointment, Sylvan will try to schedule your first-choice date, then second, third, fourth, or fifth-choice in chronological order at your first-choice test center. If you decide to select a second-choice test center, Sylvan will then try to schedule your first-choice, then second, third, fourth, or fifth-choice at your second-choice center. If none of the dates are available, Sylvan will try to schedule you for a day closest to your choices. If you have a problem with the appointment scheduled for you, contact your RRC.

Test Date and Center Information


Note: GMAT is not given every day at all test centers. Contact your RRC for the latest information (see page 10 in the Bulletin). Indicate your first five date choices by month (MM) and day (DD); for example, May 21 would be listed as 05/21. Indicate the test center number where you want to test, and write out the name of the city where the test center is located. You may also indicate a second choice center.

Retaking the Test


You may not take the GMAT more than once per calendar month.

Submitting This Form


If mailed, the RRC must receive the form at least three weeks prior to your first-choice test date if scheduling at a permanent center. If scheduling at a mobile center, the form must be received by the 15th day of the month preceding the month in which you plan to test. Complete the form and mail it, with proper payment (including applicable taxes), to the appropriate RRC. If possible, please use a standard business envelope to mail your form. Remember to apply appropriate postage, and to include your return address on the outside of the envelope.

Confirmation Letter
If you do not receive a confirmation of your appointment, you must call the RRC at least three business days prior to your first-choice appointment. If you miss your appointment and did not call the RRC, your test fee will not be refunded.

Test Preparation for the GMAT CAT


Both the Graduate Management Admission Council and Educational Testing Service believe that it is important for all candidates taking the GMAT to be familiar with the kinds of questions asked on the test. GMAT is not aware of any evidence, however, that these methods improve familiarity with the GMAT any better than would reviewing the sample questions and instructions in this Bulletin.

Test-taking Suggestions
To use the allotted time wisely, familiarize yourself with the mechanics of the test and the kinds of materials, questions, and directions in the test. Become familiar with the formats and requirements of each section of the test. Read all test directions carefully. The directions explain exactly what is required in order to answer each question type. To review directions during the test, click on the Help icon. Read each question carefully and thoroughly. Before answering a question, determine exactly what is being asked. Never skim a question or the possible answers; skimming may cause you to miss important information or nuances. If you do not know the answer or if the question is too time-consuming, guess. Confirm your answer only when you are certain you are ready to move on to the next question. You cannot omit questions or go back and change answers. Pace yourself so that you have enough time to answer every question. Pay attention to the number of questions and the amount of time remaining during your testing session (see chart on this page). On average, you have 13/ 4 minutes for each verbal question and 2 minutes for each quantitative question. (If you do not finish in the allotted time, you will still get a score as long as youve worked on every section.) Your score will depend on the statistical characteristics of the questions presented to you, your answers to those questions, and the number of questions you answer. To prepare for the Analytical Writing Assessment, practice with the sample writing topics in this Bulletin. Additional topics are included on the MBA Explorer Web site and in The Official Guide for GMAT Review. These topics may appear in your actual GMAT. You will have 30 minutes to compose each essay using the word processor, which you can practice on before you start the test (see Tutorials below).

The GMAT CAT includes verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing questions. Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving questions will be mingled throughout the quantitative section and Sentence Correction, Reading Comprehension, and Critical Reasoning questions will be mingled throughout the verbal section. The quantitative section of the GMAT measures basic mathematical skills and understanding of elementary concepts, and the ability to reason quantitatively, solve quantitative problems, and interpret graphic data. The verbal section of the test measures the ability to understand and evaluate what is read and to recognize basic conventions of standard written English. The analytical writing section of the test measures the ability to think critically and communicate complex ideas through writing. Individual test questions are reviewed to eliminate language, symbols, or content considered to be potentially offensive or inappropriate for major subgroups of the testtaking population or that serve to perpetuate any negative attitude about these subgroups. In addition, statistical procedures are applied to help identify questions that may be unfair.

READING COMPREHENSION The questions in this group are based on the content of a passage. After reading the passage, choose the best answer to each question. Answer all questions following the passage on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. One sample reading passage follows. SAMPLE PASSAGE Studies of the Weddell seal in the laboratory have described the physiological mechanisms that allow the seal to cope with the extreme oxygen deprivation that occurs during its longest Line dives, which can extend 500 meters below the oceans surface (5) and last for over 70 minutes. Recent field studies, however, suggest that during more typical dives in the wild, this seals physiological behavior is different. In the laboratory, when the seal dives below the surface of the water and stops breathing, its heart beats more slowly, (10) requiring less oxygen, and its arteries become constricted, ensuring that the seals blood remains concentrated near those organs most crucial to its ability to navigate underwater. Guidelines for the Use of GMAT Scores


Introduction These guidelines have been prepared to provide information about appropriate score use for those who interpret scores and set criteria for admission and to protect students from unfair decisions based on inappropriate use of scores. The guidelines are based on several policy and psychometric considerations. The Graduate Management Admission Council has an obligation to inform users of the scores strengths and limitations, and the users have a concomitant obligation to use the scores in an appropriate, rather than the most convenient, manner. The purpose of any testing instrument, including the Graduate Management Admission Test, is to provide information to assist in making decisions; the test alone should not be presumed to be a decision maker. GMAT test scores are but one of a number of sources of information and should be used, whenever possible, in combination with other information and, in every case, with full recognition of what the test can and cannot do. The primary asset of the GMAT is that it provides a common measure, administered under standard conditions, with known reliability, validity, and other psychometric qualities, for evaluating the academic skills of many individuals. The GMAT has two primary limitations: (1) it cannot and does not measure all the qualities important for graduate study in management and other pursuits; (2) there are psychometric limitations to the test for example, only score differences of certain magnitudes are reliable indicators of real differences in performance. Such limits should be taken into consideration as GMAT scores are used. Specific Guidelines 1. In recognition of the tests limitations, use multiple criteria. The GMAT itself does not measure every discipline-related skill necessary for academic work, nor does it measure subjective factors important to academic and career success, such as motivation, creativity, and interpersonal skills. Therefore, all available pertinent information about an applicant must be considered before a selection decision is made, with GMAT scores being only one of these criteria. 2. Interpret the analytical writing score on the basis of the criteria and standards established in the GMAT Scoring Guides. These criteria and standards are the best source for interpreting the analytical writing score. Recognize that the score is based on two 30-minute written responses that represent first-draft writing samples. Each response is evaluated according to the scoring guides, although the average score can result from different combinations of ratings. For example, a test taker whose individual ratings are 5 and 6 on the first topic and 3 and 3 on the second topic for an average score of 4.5 (rounded to the nearest half-point interval) receives the same score as a student whose individual ratings are 5 and 5 on the first topic and 4 and 4 on the second topic. 3. Establish the relationship between GMAT scores and performance in your graduate management school. It is incumbent on any institution using GMAT scores in the admissions process that it demonstrate empirically the relationship between test scores and measures of performance in its academic program. Data should be collected and analyzed to provide information about the predictive validity of GMAT scores and their appropriateness for the particular use and in the particular circumstances at the score-using school. In addition, any formula used in the admissions process that combines test scores with other criteria should be validated and reviewed regularly to determine whether the weights attached

to the particular measures are appropriate for optimizing the prediction of performance in the program. 4. Avoid the use of cutoff scores. The use of arbitrary cutoff scores (below which no applicant will be considered for admission) is strongly discouraged, primarily for the reasons cited in the introduction to these guidelines. Distinctions based on score differences not substantial enough to be reliable should be avoided. (For information about reliability, see the GMAT Examinee Score Interpretation Guide.) Cutoff scores should be used only if there is clear empirical evidence that a large proportion of the applicants scoring below the cutoff scores have substantial difficulty doing satisfactory graduate work. In addition, it is incumbent on the school to demonstrate that the use of cutoff scores does not result in the systematic exclusion of members of either sex, of any age or ethnic groups, or of any other relevant groups in the face of other evidence that would indicate their competence or predict their success. 5. Do not compare GMAT scores with those on other tests. GMAT scores cannot be derived from scores on other tests. The GMAT is not intended to be parallel to graduate admission tests offered by other testing programs. 6. Interpret scores of persons with disabilities cautiously. The GMAT is offered with special arrangements to accommodate the needs of examinees with visual, physical, hearing, and learning disabilities. Test scores earned under nonstandard conditions are reported with a special notice that persons with disabilities may be at a disadvantage when taking standardized tests such as the GMAT, even when the test is administered in a manner chosen by the examinee to minimize any adverse effect of his or her disability on test performance. In using these scores, admissions officers should note the usual caution that GMAT scores be considered as only one part of an applicants record. Normally Appropriate Uses of GMAT Scores 1. For selection of applicants for graduate study in management. A persons GMAT scores tell how the person performed on a test designed to measure general verbal and quantitative abilities that are associated with success in the first year of study at graduate schools of management and that have been developed over a long period of time. The scores can be used in conjunction with other information to help estimate performance in a graduate management program. 2. For selection of applicants for financial aid based on academic potential. 3. For counseling and guidance. Undergraduate counselors, if they maintain appropriate records, such as the test scores and undergraduate grade point averages of their students accepted by various graduate management programs, may be able to help students estimate their chances of acceptance at given graduate management schools. Normally Inappropriate Uses of GMAT Scores 1. As a requisite for awarding a degree. The GMAT is designed to measure broadly defined verbal and quantitative skills and is primarily useful for predicting success in graduate management schools. The use of the test for anything other than selection for graduate management study, financial aid awards, or counseling and guidance is to be avoided. 2. As a requirement for employment, for licensing or certification to perform a job, or for job-related rewards (raises, promotions, etc.). For the reasons listed in number 1 above, the use of the GMAT for these purposes is inappropriate. Further, approved score-receiving institutions are not permitted to make score reports available for any of these purposes. 3. As an achievement test. The GMAT is not designed to assess an applicants achievement or knowledge in specific subject areas.
