The characteristic of the PS-l 0 carrier to hold on to chloride has prompted one refiner to replace his chloride injection pump with a smaller capacity pump to keep from over-chloridirig the catalyst. To take advantage of the improved regenerator capabilities o the newer designed units and to reduce the refiner's investment in platinum, Criterion introduced its second CCR reforming catalyst, PS20. It uses the same carrier as PS-l 0, so it will also feature enhanced surface area stability, low fines generation, and high chloride affinity. Favorable laboratory testing results have earned PS-20 a place on several companies' approved catalyst list. Criterion and CRI offer a way to reduce catalyst costs when CCR reformers are shut down for internal inspection. In the past, ' about 20% of the catalyst inventory was replaced because it was either heel catalyst or contaminated by the heel catalyst. If the heel catalyst is reloaded into the CCR reformer, it severely upsets the operation. The highly coked heel catalyst has a higher density than , the circulating catalyst. This density differel1ce is sufficient to allow the two portions of the catalyst to be .separated. Thus, the good quality catalyst can be recovered from the heel catalyst. Therefore, make-up catalyst needs may be reduced to only 10% or less of the catalyst inventory.

Fixed Bed R.eforming Catalyst

Criterion sponsors research on reforming catalysts of improved performance in select circumstances. One such project led to PR-9 catalyst. This catalyst demonstrates higher benzene make on light naphtha, BTX type feed, under certain operating conditions. PR-9 operates similar to typical PtRe reforrningtcatalysts. It was installed in a commercial reformer in 1993. Based upon performance, the customer has placed an additional order for PR-9 For another of its reformers.
