Sustainable Energy & Power Systems

Introduction to electric energy systems: history, current trends, renewable and nonrenewable sources, rotating machines and their operation, and smart grid initiatives. Prereq: 2100 or 292 or 294 (Sp 2011) or 205, and enrollment in ECE or EngPhysics major. Homework will be due at the beginning of class on the due date; no late work will be accepted. Late homework with prior arrangements) will be docked 10% per day. Working Together: Students are encouraged to work together on homework (and project assignment) but each student should hand in his or her individual homework solution. Quizzes: Bi-weekly, 30-min duration. Mid-term Exam 1: Feb 25, 4:10-5:05 PM Mid-term Exam 2: April 1, 4:10-5:05 PM Final Exam: April 30, Tuesday, 4:00-5:45 PM. No make-up/early exam is allowed. All Exams & Quizzes: In-class written exams, closed book and notes. One 8.5x11 cheat sheet is allowed. Standard calculators may be used. No internet-enabled devices are allowed. Project: Students will form teams (3-5 members per team) to work on a project on contemporary topics relevant to the Sustainable Energy & Power System area. There will be project presentations during the last two weeks of classes. Details will be given in a separate document at the end of Week 2. Honor System: The examinations and homework problems in this course will be administered in accordance with the ECE Honor System, i.e., the work turned in should reflect your own, individual work and efforts, not the results of the cooperative efforts of a group of people. Please contact the instructor or a member of the ECE Student Council if you have any questions about the honor system. Grading: Homework 20% Midterm I&II 15% each Quiz 15% Final Exam 20% Team Project 15% Optional Bonus In-class involvement (up to 3%) Academic Misconduct: Any student found to have engaged in academic misconduct, as set forth in the Code of Student Conduct Section 3335-23-04, Prohibited Conduct, will be subject to disciplinary action by the university.
