Unit I Basic Concept Emotion-Emotional Intelligence Related Concepts.

Emotion The Word Comes from the Latin exmovere ex-out of,Movere to move. This means to move out or to agitate. This is closely related to another concept called Motivation . Both suggests action,instead of standing still or being laid back.

In motivation I take step to reach goal while in emotions there is an internal movement and also a perceived threat ( negative emotion) or a perceived reach to a goal ( positive Emotions)

Emotions are Subjective state of feelings, Characterized by facial expressions, physiological reactions and cognitive evaluations. Physiological correlates of Emotion are Cardiovascular, muscular Skeletal, thermoregulatory, respiratory, gastrointestinal,urinary and reproductive reactions.

Plutchik and kellerman ( 1989) have identified 8 primary emotions which are commonly referred as emotions and clearly describing emotional activities. The Subjective states are Fear-Anger- Joy-Sadness-Acceptance-Disgust-Expectation-Surprise. Other Group Ecstasy,terror,Despair A model of an emotional experience Step 1 An event Something happens that potentially relates to the persons goal either a threat or a enhancer ( For example a remark, a gesture, an accident,a lapse in some performance etc.

Step 2 Perception of Event Person hears, sees, reads, notices the even with full awareness. Step 3 Appraisal of Event The person determines whether whatever happened is a threat or non threat and is experiences a set of feelings. Step 4 Filtering the appraisal The status of the person ( Internal and external background and past experiences etc) influence the appraisal Step 5 Reaction to appraisal The strength of Reaction depends on the value of threat of the event or its benefit to personal goals. Normally when a event either threatens the personal goals or enhances a goal the emotions precedes the normal cognitive responses.

Whatever may be the Emotional response or activity be it weak or strong, may have a complex origin, It can be attributed to Brain structure, Body chemistry,habit,personal cognitive intention,stress,Genetic vulnerability ,Diet,etc.

Example I feel upset but Doesnt Know why? I am frustrated with this work is making me feel bogged down Will things get beeter than what it is now? How dare he/she talks to me like that? Feel choked thinking about it

Recognizing Facial expressions associated with emotions

Emotional intelligence Salovey and Mayer define EI as the ability to perceive emotion, integrate emotion to facilitate thought, understand emotions and to regulate emotions to promote personal growth. Emotional Intelligence describes the ability, capacity, skill or the case as a trait as self perceived ability to identify, assess, manage and control the emotions of ones self, of others and of groups. Emotional competencies is a set of ability in an individual to control, manage one own moods, feelings, and impulses which contribute to best of situational outcomes. These abilities have a an effect on work performance, adaptability and adjustment to various life situations. The four branch model of emotional intelligence describes four areas of capacities or skills that collectively describe many of areas of emotional intelligence (Mayer & Salovey, 1997). More specifically, this model defines emotional intelligence as involving the abilities to: accurately perceive emotions in oneself and others use emotions to facilitate thinking understand emotional meanings, and manage emotions Related Concepts Social intelligence-Emotional maturity-Emotional literacy and Emotional competence
