KIDS STORIES
Boring Town
At the end of her first day in Boring Grandma understood that something was terribly wrong with the townspeople -- even her own family. When she smiled and nodded, people moved away with alarm. When Grandma told Ekta with a smile that she had made mouthwatering gajar ka halwa for her granddaughter, what did Ekta do? She said: The history teacher cut three marks in the test. God knows how many marks she has cut over the years. By now she must have a treasure chest full of marks. I wonder what she will do with all those marks? Maybe I should steal her trunk some day. I will be a very rich girl indeed. She did not touch the gajar ka halwa. Grandma was amazed. How could anyone talk about marks all the time? But she heard this nonsense day after day not only from Ekta but from every other boy and girl -- and as if that was not bad enough, from the parents as well! If anything the parents were worse. They were always pushing their children to get more marks so that they could get ahead of others. Just as people go to temples to pray, the parents of Boring went to a shop called The Marks Bazaar. The shop sold a special type of pen with which one could write secret messages. The parents would buy these pens for their children who would then scribble answers on their thighs, ankles and elbows during exams. It was called preparation for exams. The parents did not know that the shopkeeper also secretly sold infra-red detectors that could catch any secret message on any surface. The children ended up getting caught by teachers and so the parents were forced to return to The Marks Bazaar to buy better secret messengers, as they were called. Grandma was shocked to see all this. I must do something so that the people of Boring learn to be happy, she thought to herself. It was time to use her secret weapon! This secret weapon had changed Grandmas life in childhood. As a young girl she always complained about everything and anything. She thought her parents would give her more things to try and make her happy. Then one day Grandmas cousin sister Haasya decided to change things. She came up from behind and tickled Grandma hard. Without her knowing it Grandma squealed and giggled. Ah, so you can giggle like other children, said her cousin. When Grandma laughed she felt very happy. Grandmas parents named Haasya the Goddess of Laughter. Haasya was such an expert at tickling that people could not but laugh. She knew more jokes than there were stars in the sky. Good jokes, funny jokes, that made people laugh with each other. Once they laughed together they felt warm towards each other. They made friends for life. Once Grandma laughed the whole day -- so much so that her dentures fell out! But she made the people of her neighbourhood laugh with her. Since then there had been very few fights in that area.

Once upon a time in India, there was a town called Boring. It was by the side of Dull Lake. The people of Boring never smiled; they did not know how to Whether it was grownups or children. All the children ever did was study. They studied in school all day. On returning home they got busy with homework and with revision for class tests in school. No one played any games -- there were no playgrounds in the town. It was a strange town. The children were never happy to meet each other. Sometimes they would try to avoid each others eyes. Or they would try to pretend that they had not studied much for tests. That was not all. They also lied to each other about which chapters were important for the coming test. All that the children wanted was marks, marks and more marks. What a town Boring was! No one knew how to smile let alone giggle or laugh or crack a joke. Life was really dull and boring. One day the town had a visitor. Ektas grandmother had come visiting. It was her first time in Boring. She had silvery hair and a smile that stretched from ear to ear. Even her eyes smiled. The people of Boring found her very odd.

Grandma had never forgotten Haasyas words. You can have power over all the worlds laughter. But that power willwork only if you wish to do something to make people come close to each other. That day Grandma learnt that laughter was the most powerful weapon in the world, though very few people understood its strength. I need to use the secret weapon for my granddaughter Ekta as well as for the people of Boring, Grandma told herself. Next morning as Ekta got ready for school, Grandma played a clever trick on her. Ekta, there is something under your chin, let me rub it off. As Ekta stood obediently, Grandma came up to her and tickled her hard. Something happened. It was like an electric shock. Aiyeeee, Ekta squealed and then a laugh escaped her lips. What did I do just now, Ekta asked her grandmother in surprise. This, said Grandma and tickled her again, making Ekta laugh some more. Her head had never felt so light before. From the window Ekta saw her puppy bark angrily at two crows making a big racket perched on the neem tree. She laughed. Grandma took her to the garden. How come I have never seen these blusing pink roses and the many greens of grass and leaves before, Ekta wondered. That day she went to school with the plan Grandma had told her.You just have to tickle one girl. The tickle travels by touch from person to person. By afternoon, all the children in school were giggling. Each time they uttered the word m-a-r-k-s, they giggled! Each time they spoke of secret messengers, they went into whoops of laughter. And when somebody spoke of the teachers treasure chest of marks, they toppled over asking each other: how could anyone store marks?

And then something wonderful happened. The same children who could never get a sum right did not do anything wrong that day. Asked to add two and two, they went out to the garden, touched two roses and two champa flowers and said there were four flowers! They said it with a giggle! Even the teachers started smiling. It happened when one teacher tried to cane a student. He thought the student had cheated to get the right answer. As he held out the infrared detector menacingly over the students knee, the student said, Sir, there is a speck of dust on your trouser. Please let me remove it. Saying this he tickled the teacher on the back of his knee. The teacher started smiling and broke the cane. The tickle revolution continued. By evening the parents had started smiling, laughing and guffawing. Next morning, the local radio station broadcast an interesting bit of news about some strange sounds having invaded the town! Nobody knew what the announcer said next, for he too started giggling! The tickle must have got to him too. Grandma was satisfied. Her work was done. She returned home. Since then, wherever children have laughed and played with each other, those villages, towns and cities have never seen any misfortune...

a chapter of this book (he dangled the History book like the Sword of Damocles), as if he were the teacher. The teacher had announced that each student would be given a week to prepare for class. He even invited the boys to chew my brains during this process if he so wants. Saying this, Pal had grinned, while the class gave an involuntary shudder - it would take a very brave man to seek out Pals company outside the classroom. Twenty-four chapters for twentyfour of you - thats neat arithmetic. And, at the end of the term, we will have a poll to see who is adjudged the best teacher of all. That boy shall be the Class Prodigy. I shall personally recommend the golden star for him, Pal droned in his usual style. And so it started. Week after week, Raghu saw the best and the brightest of his classmates being reduced to quivering jellies during their teaching sessions, under Pals merciless sarcasm. The weeklong preparation might never have been, for each student found that he could never do it right. And now it was Raghus turn. Worse, he had done virtually nothing to prepare the chapter on the French Revolution that had come his way. His mind was a complete blank. He had tried, of course. For a week now it had become a routine for

Teaching a Lesson

Its my turn tomorrow, mumbled Raghu to himself as he climbed the stairs of his school building, very slowly as if he were sleep-walking. He had been dreading this day ever since Pal declared his grand class prodigy scheme, two months ago. Pal was the much feared History teacher. It has been said that genius is 99 per cent perspiration and one per cent inspiration, he had said in his usual pompous manner. I suggest we test this theory. Beginning next week, we shall have one student present

him to sit with his History textbook open at the page where the chapter on the French Revolution began. And somehow, he did nothing but stare at the sketch of Marie Antoniette, Queen of France in the late 18th century when the Revolution broke out. Marie Antoniette, with her hair cut in a pageboy style, just before she was executed. Raghu felt very close to her for some reason. Actually, the reason had a face - that of Pals. And then there was only one day left for his ordeal. Deep down Raghu knew that even if he stayed up the whole night and studied, he would still be a sitting duck for Pals snide comments the following day. Sometimes, though, he felt that Pal couldnt help himself, as if something, some inner force egged him on to be nasty. The day passed by in a haze. Raghus classmates observed his unusually quiet self. Unlike other days, no one tried to snap him out of it or snigger. That afternoon, the chiming of the school bell did not rouse that familiar sensation of freedom in Raghu. As the school emptied out in one rush, he lingered on near the school grounds for a long time. If only I could refuse to take class, he told himself as he ambled home. But how could he possibly do that? He took the long way home, past rows of staff quarters, past the principals impressive bungalow. And who should be coming out of the house, but Pal. Thankfully, the creepers that hung over the front porch prevented Pal from seeing Raghu, who darted behind a bush to watch what was going on. In a while, the principals wife came out with her 11-yearold son Tapan. Mouthing a profuse thank you to Pal, she thrust a white envelope in Pals hands. And then Pal was off toward the staff quarters. He spent a long time at the house of Mr Tipnis, the Physical Education teacher. It was evening when he came out. Raghu had been waiting outside all that while. Tipniss son, Dhruv, was in Raghus class. And lately, the below-average scores of Dhruv Tipnis had shown a remarkable transformation, especially in History. Raghu was greatly excited. Whatever else the principal tolerated, he couldnt bear the idea of a teacher of his school doubling up as tutor. Any teacher who joined the school had to sign an agreement stating that he would not take any tuition. Yes! That was it - Pal was breaking the rules. Raghu wondered at his audacity. Bad enough that he was teaching other kids, but the principals son! He must be taking advantage of his superiors routine of visiting the club every afternoon, Raghu thought. And he must be getting paid handsomely for his coaching, for it was well known that the
Karma 6

principal couldnt bear academically weak students. Now Raghu knew what he had to do.When Pal finally emerged from Tipnis house, the youngster stepped out right in front of his errant teachers path. Despite the dark, he could have sworn that Pals face had gone completely white. Good evening sir, just passing by, he chortled in a breathless voice. Were you passing by as well? Saw you pass by the heads house, too. Having said his piece, Raghu ran for his life.It goes without saying that he did not prepare for the class. He had a feeling he didnt need to. He was right. Pal declared an abrupt end to the class prodigy scheme the next day, and got back to teaching his students. He stopped passing by the staff quarters, too .

Limits of the Mind

Ekalavya was a little boy, born in a poor family, many many years ago. His people lived a little away from Hastinapura, the capital of the Kuru kings. They used to clean other peoples dirt for a profession. And for this reason they were shunned by society. Ekalavya and other kids of his group knew they \ too had to follow their parents professions. Their parents often told them, You are not meant to go to school. What use is school for carrying garbage which is your only job? Dont go near those people; they are high born, we are low born. Ekalavya didnt understand. Why, but why? he asked his mother. She replied God set these limits. God! Why would God want nice things for them and dirty things for us? Hasnt God made all of us? Ekalavya asked. She sighed, Darling I dont know, but there are bounds we cannot cross, this is Gods rule. Ekalavya became quiet. From that day the only important thing for him was to understand the meaning of limit. You know, kids (and grown ups) are sometimes cruel. One day Ekalavya and his friends trapped a little ant and were watching it try to escape. The ant tried and tried till it found a little opening at the edge of the trap and escaped. Other children moved to trap it again but Ekalavya stopped them shouting, The brave ant has broken the bounds. Limits are meant to be broken. I am free, free. One day, Ekalavya saw beautiful chariots come into the forest near his village. He saw boys of his age get out of the chariot one by one. What lovely clothes they wore! Last, an old man with snowy white hair and spotless white clothes came out looking stern and calm. The boys

seemed a little scared of the old man but with one dusky handsome boy, the old mans behaviour was different, he smiled and patted this boy on the head. Ekalavya heard his fathers voice, Come away boy, there is work to do. Those are the Kuru princes, with their teacher Drona. The boy he just patted is his favourite, Arjuna. They have come to practice archery. Dont go near them. Father, all I want is a pat from the grand old man. so saying, Eklavya ran towards the old man Drona. By then the boys had started shooting with bows and arrows. What amazing things Arjuna did! He could shoot at a target with his eyes shut. He could shoot with his left hand as well as the right. And the teacher Drona? His arrows made fire, chased things in circles, brought rain and lightning. It was magical. Arjunas eyes never left his teacher. It was like he wanted to absorb every bit of Drona. And you could see that Drona too was very proud of Arjuna. The practice ended. Ekalavya went up to Drona and with folded hands said, Great sir, please teach me. I dont teach the low-born, was the cold reply as Drona turned away. Master, your arrows dont seem to mind any limits, they bring rain and fire, they bring night and day. How then can you be bound by stupid thoughts of high and low birth? With this Ekalavya walked away from the glaring Drona. The next day, Ekalavya carved a statue of Drona on a tree trunk with a knife. He made himself a bow and arrows. Each day he would bow before the statue, practise shooting and imagine a pat on his back from Drona. Some months passed. The grand princes and their master came to the forest again. As Arjuna reached to take aim of a particularly difficult target, an arrow reached Arjunas target before he could even aim. Shocked the boys and their teacher looked around. They saw Ekalavya, who went up to touch Dronas feet. Who is your teacher? Drona asked. Ekalavya quietly led him to the statue. Drona looked at it for some time and said, If I am your Guru, give me my fee, my guru dakshina. Ask, sir, bowed Ekalavya. I want your right thumb, replied the stone hearted Drona. Without the right thumb to support it, how can any archer ever hold a bow?As Arjuna and the other princes watched in shock, Ekalavya wordlessly cut off his right thumb and laid it at Dronas feet. Many years passed. A great war was on in Kurukshetra between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, cousins who were related. Arjuna was on the side of the Pandavas. His teacher Drona, and many of his cousins, who had been Dronas students with him, were on the other side. After the days battle, a sad Drona was sitting in his camp. Suddenly, like a respectful prayer, arrows fell near his feet

one after another. He looked up and who do you think he saw? Why, Ekalavya ! The young Ekalavya said, Master I have learned to shoot without my right thumb. I have learned to shoot with my left hand, and with my feet. I have taught others and raised an army. Today Im known as a great archer. Drona was speechless. Master, I set your greatness free from the limits of your own mind. I made it my teacher in the form of your statue. Your great love for Arjuna crossed the bounds of fairness when you asked for my thumb. You thought that it would finish me as an archer. But great masters always end up teaching something. By asking for my thumb, you made me learn to shoot with both hands and feet. And for this lesson, I offer my services to you in this war.

Dronas eyes filled with tears. He answered, Yes, it is true, bounds and limits are in the mind. Real courage is fighting against wrong limits and respecting the correct ones. Ekalavya, you have taught me this.

Soorakudi The Soorakudi temple is about 10 kms from Karaikudi on the road to Kanadukathaan and the Chettinad railway station. The soorai shrub also abounds here and is given as an explanation for the name of the village. The temple has ten vimanams and two gopurams. Its rajagopuram to the east, comprises five storeys and is richly embellished. Another striking feature of the temple is the sculptured pillars on the corridor around the shrines of the main deities. This is one of the temples of the Nagarathar clan that is held in high regard for its sculptures. Velankudi The last clan temple is the Velankudi temple that is located on the Karaikudi-Thiruchirapalli road, about 10 kms from Karaikudi, in an area abounding in vela trees. With just 46 pullis ( family member) and a membership of less than 200 in its four villages, this is smallest temple clan among the Nagarathars. A curious feature is that their numbers have not changed for over a hundred years. The result is a temple to which scant attention has been paid towards renovation. The last kumbhabhishekam for the temple was performed in 1937. The temple was granted to the Nagarathars in 718 A.D. Iraniyur About 25 kms from Karaikudi on the Pillaiyarapatti road, near Keelasivalpatti, is the Iraniyur temple. There are 50 bronze statutes here, a splendid Nataraja dating to the 12th -13th century period. One of the bronze statutes belong to the 16th century, another in a 5-metal alloy of the 17th century, a dozen from the 19th century and the rest from the 20th century. Two groups of beautiful paintings grace the Lakshmi mandapam. Opposite the Rajagopuram is one set of paintings done in the Vijayanagar style during the first renovation and another in the 1940s during the second renovation. The latter displays the Ravi Varma influence. Pillaiyarpatti The best known of the Nagarathar clan temples, Pillaiyarpatti, about 12 kms from Karaikudi on the road to Madurai. It attracts visitors in large numbers from all parts of India and abroad. The Karpaga Vinayagar here is a huge bas-relief in a cave hewn out of a hillock and is a splendid example of the art of the South India sculptor. The tall sculpture is more than 6 feet tall and dates back to the 5th Century A.D. The Rajagopuram is on the eastern entrance and rises in five storeys. The temple is rich in stone and terracotta sculptures. There are 30 bronze statutes in the temple that date from the 10th century. The main deities here are Karpaga Vinayagar, Lord Thiruveswarar and his consort Sivagami. Karaikudi Karaikudi is located in Sivagangai district between Thiruchirapalli - Rameswaram High road. It got its name because of the famous plant called karai which is widely spread over this area. The famous temple Pillaiyar Patti is 12 kms away from Karaikudi. The city is known for Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple, also known as Shiva temple which has 108 statues of Ganapathi. Sekkalai is located at the northeast of Karaikudi, and was known Karma 10

as Jayam Konda Puram. In the North-east of Karaikudi is Muthu Pattinam which is known for Muthu Mariamman Temple. At the centre is Kallukatti, where the famous temple Koppudaiamman is located. The river Thennar flows through south Karaikudi. Tamil Thai Kovil, Kamban Manimandapam, the Vallal Allagappar Statue, Kaviaraser Kannadhasan Manimandapam and Statue brings honor to Karaikudi. Nagara Koil The people of Chettinad moved on from their settlement to other villages not far from their first settlement and, there were nine main clusters of villages. To each of them the Pandya King granted a temple in perpetuity. The nine temples thus became the family temple for each group and each cluster evolved as a subdivision of the Chettiars or what might describe as a fraternal clan. The clan temple tradition is that a wedding is recognized only if the bride and bridegroom receive wedding garlands from their respective clan temples. The moment the wedding is registered, the bridegroom becomes a pulli. Ilayathangudi The first of the clan temples was in Ilayathangudi and it is 25 kms from Karaikudi on the road to Kunrakudi, passing Nemam, Keelasivalpatti and Avinipatti on the way. It is said to have been granted to the Nagarathars in 707 A.D. The temple is known for its great sculptural value and it has the biggest tank, oorani of all other temples. Legend has it, that this was the resting place of the gods and it explains the villages name with a syllable breakup that is as follows: ilaippu meaning tiredness, attru meaning to remove and gudi meaning place.

Chettinad Samayal / Cooking

- Vishal Kalyani Kilaikkose Pirattal (Brussels sprouts curry ) I was really excited when I saw this vegetable in my home town, since this is one of the rare vegetable found only in big towns like Trichi, Chennai ,Coimbatore, Madurai etc in Tamil Nadu. The people who conduct big functions like weddings manage to get these from the nearest big city like Trichi. The chettinad cooks make tasty dishes out of kilaikkose like pirattal, Kuruma etc. To season Those who dont want it spicy can season with a teaspoon of small jeera and big jeera.:cinamon-1 small piece:Clove-2:Cardomom-2 For parties you can make the dish spicy else season it simply. Procedure Cut the brussel sprouts into 4 pieces. Mince onion and tomatoes. Grind the items given in to grind to a smooth paste adding water. Microwave the veg for 2 minutes in a microwavable vessel for 2 minutes. Now add little salt for the veg and again microwave for a minute. Those who dont use microwave can cook the veg in a kadai with water till the vegetable is three fourth cooked. Keep the kadai in the stove. Add a table spoon of cooking oil. This curry tastes good with little extra oil.Season the curry. Add onions and saut for 2 to 3 minutes. Sprinkle some salt to the onions which will help the onions to get sauted fast. Now add the tomatoes. If you feel that the tomatoes you are using is not very ripe and tender grind it for a second in the mixie. Saut the tomatoes till they are really smashed. While sauting you can smash it with a laddle to help it get smashed fast. Once the onion and tomatoes are smashed like a gravy add the grinded masala into the kadai and cook in low fire stirring continously for 2 minutes. Add little

turmeric powder and the salt neede for the masala also. Now add the cooked kilakkose along with the little water in the microwave bowl. Kavunarisi (A special Chettinad Sweet, Black sweet rice) This is a chettinad sweet delicacy which I think can be had only here. I understand what is going in everybodys mind now. What is it special? Why it can be had mainly in chettinad only? The answer to these questions are, Mainly this sweet is made out of a special kind of rice grown in this region, which after grinding will be red in color and will be needle like. Dont confuse this rice with the red (kaikuthal Arisi) available in Kerala. I come to know that a very fine quality of this rice is available in Singapore. Once you have this rice, preparation is very simple. This rice after cooking will be sticky. That is the quality that makes it ideal for a sweet. In chettinad we get this rice hand grinded also. Ingredients Kavuni Arisi-1 cup: Sugar-1/2 cup (according to taste): Ghee-1 table spoon: Grated coconut-2 tablespoon: Cardomom-4 or 5 Procedure This rice is little difficult to get cooked. So soak the rice for 3 to 4 hours before

In my first visit to the H Mart, I got this vegetable. I first made kuruma out of this and I was not very much impressed. I think I overcooked the veg. Next I tried the traditional pirattal and it turned out very tasty. This dish can be mixed with rice and can be packed for lunch for those who are not big fans of curd rice. This will go very well with curd rice as a side dish. Ingredients Kilaikkose-10 to 15: Big onion minced-1:Tomato-1 minced To grind Grated cocunut-1 table spoon:Small jeera(cumin seed0-1 teaspoon):Big jeera or sombu(fennel seed)-1 teaspoon Pottukadalai-1 table spoon or cashews-6:Red chili-3 to 4

preparing. Pressure cook the rice adding 3 cups of water in medium fire for 10 to 12 minutes. The rice should be cooked very soft till the white pulp in the red outer shell of the rice comes out. After opening the cooker if you find it not properly cooked, Cook for some more time. Try to smash the rice with a ladle when the heat is there. If there is excess water, strain it. After smashing, add the sugar checking for the taste in between. Powder the cardamom with a teaspoon of sugar. Add that along with the ghee and mix well. The sweet is ready. If you find the rice you are using needs more water to cook, add more next time and vice versa. Kathirikkai Sadam (Brinjal Rice) When we are short of much vegetables or time or interest, then this is an excellent choice. The same recipe can be used for capsicum and some other vegetables also. Try out with some more vegetable available in your area. Kopra or dried coconut is best suited for this recipe. If kopra is not available grated coconut can be used and sauted well.

Ingredients Cooked rice-2 cups (dont over cook. Cook like you cook for tamarind or lemon rice) Brinjal -1/4 kg:Tomato-1:Onion1:Curry leaf little Coriander leaf little Ingredients for the masal powder: Red chilies -10, Coconut-2 table spoons of kopra, Urudh dhal-2 table spoons, Channa dhal ( kadalai paruppu)-2 table spoons, Dhania (coriander seeds)-1 teaspoon, Cinnamon-a small piece, Clove-2, Fenugreek ( vendayam )-1/2 teaspoon. Procedure to make the powder In little ghee or oil first roast the chilies and keep apart. Then saut everything adding one by one in the order in which it is given. No need to fry it till red. Switch off when you feel it is roasted. In a mixie powder it and store it. Procedure Keep the kadai in the stove. In a table spoon of oil and ghee mixed, season with a small piece of cinnamon, clove and curry leaf. Add the minced

tomato and onion and saut. Add the brinjal pieces too and saut in low fire adding salt and turmeric powder. Make sure that brinjal pieces dont get over cooked. Stay near the stove and saut. If necessary sprinkle some water. If you close the kadai for a minute, it will get cooked fast. Once you feel that the brinjal pieces are cooked, add the masal powder and mix well. Mean time transfer the rice to a flat bowl. Add little ghee or oil and little salt to the rice and allow it to cool. Once you feel the rice is not very hot add the rice into the kadai or the brinjal into the vessel and mix well in such a way that the rice or brinjal pieces do not get smashed. Garnish with coriander leaves. Heat the rice in a microwave or kadai while serving You can prepare this powder in lots during weekends and can store .Then making this rice will only be a few minutes job.

exual energy can be very intense, so just doing one thing to overcome or transform it will not always work. It will sometimes occur when you are generally tired or run down, and your defenses are low. In any case, if you are struggling with sexual energy, your own inner and outer strength needs a boost. This is best done on several levels at once, which will help balance all of your 4 bodies and increase your positive energy level (raise your vibration, as some would say If youre a woman, have you noticed that whenever you feel angry, tearful, headachy, a bit below par, or lacking in sex drive, someone helpful or otherwise will tell you that: it must be your hormones? Most of us are fed up with this kind of generalisation. We want precise answers to all sorts of questions, especially to do with how our hormones affect our sex lives. Thats what we want, but the harsh truth is that there are very few precise answers to be had. Our wish to understand our hormones and our bodies is a pretty modern phenomenon. Little more than 100 years ago, women had no reliable contraception and, as a result, had babies most years. These women only had a 50 per cent chance of reaching the menopause, and I dont think that too many of them had the time or inclination to worry about their libidos, or whether a better understanding of their hormones would help. Nowadays, women can expect to live to an average age of 85. They remain fitter longer, they limit their families, and the majority of them will have several significant sexual relationships in their lives So todays woman has better health and more options and with this improved state of things she wants a superior quality of life, especially in the bedroom. There are many women who feel that their hormones must be responsible for the things that are going wrong in their sexual relationships. Today, one of the commonest female sexual problems is loss of desire.

Indeed, in North America drug companies have been claiming since 2006 that no less than 43 per cent of women have what they term female sexual arousal disorder or FSAD. I must say that in the UK, many doctors and psychosexual experts take that claim with a large pinch of salt! Nonetheless, we do see a lot of women who complain of lack of interest in sex and so do all of our colleagues. But why does it happen? Its become very fashionable to blame our hormones for loss of libido. But is there any evidence that hormones are the real culprits? The truth is that although lots of research has been done no one has managed to come up with anything very definite on the relationship between female hormones and desire. Why? Because: until recently researchers would have considered it too embarrassing or controversial. this isnt a life-threatening area of medicine. until recently, no drug company realised that there was money to be made from such research. its very difficult to measure desire scientifically (there arent any units of desire). Its interesting that, while most women believe that loss of libido is something to do with their hormones, vast numbers of adult females havent a clue about which hormones they have, and what they actually do. Perhaps this is unsurprising since its very complicated. Frankly, I dont think that most doctors truly understand it, so what chance have the rest of us got! But it seems to boil down to this: our ovaries produce large amounts of the female sex hormones - oestrogen and progesterone they also produce small amounts of the male hormones testosterone and androstenedione. Both men and women also have two important hormones, both secreted by the pituitary gland, called FSH and LH. FSH (which stands for follicle stimulating hormone) controls the formation of eggs by the ovary. LH (which stands for luteinizing hormone) controls the production of sex hormones by the ovaries. A Swiss gynecologist (see below) told us that he believes LH is strongly linked to desire.

Day one of our cycle is the first day of a period. In a monthly cycle, two main things happen: the level of oestrogen rises slowly during the first half of the month, often dips sharply at ovulation - which occurs around about day 14 - and gradually falls off just before the period. the level of progesterone rises sharply after ovulation, and then falls off just before the period.

one of the UKs leading experts in sex problems - says that lack of desire is the number one sex problem in women today and that its extremely difficult to treat. Over 25 years ago, the American professor Dr Helen Singer Kaplan wrote a ground-breaking book called Disorders Of Sexual Desire. In it she stated that: In human females, (o)estrogen does not enhance sexual desire. She also said that testosterone is the libido hormone for both genders. Furthermore, she speculated that the hormone LH might in time be used clinically to increase libido. Well, what has happened in the world of female sexuality since? In 2006 the drug companies started to promote the idea of testosterone and various papers have been published which suggest that testosterone might be the answer to what the Americans now routinely call FSAD (see above). In actual fact, doctors have been trying out testosterone on women for about 40 years, rarely with much benefit. Sideeffects include hairiness, spots, a deep voice and enlargement of the clitoris. However, there is some clinical evidence to support the use of testosterone as a treatment for low sexual desire. And in 2007 a testosterone skin patch called Intrinsa became available in the UK. But, this patch is only licensed on the NHS for women who have had an early surgically-induced menopause. Obviously, this is quite a small number of women. We do know that Intrinsa is being prescribed privately for other women with low libido, or hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) as it is now being termed. But so far, reactions to this drug are mixed. Finally, as for the female hormone LH (luteinising hormone), in 2006 Dr David Delvin and I were contacted by the noted Swiss gynaecologist Dr Michel Jemec, who has come up with a theory that LH is strongly linked with libido. David later visited him at his clinic in Lugano, where he explained that his work has suggested that high levels of LH make a woman horny, while low levels make her apathetic about sex. We await with interest publication of Dr Jemecs results in a medical journal. However, at the present moment I must stress that no treatment with LH is available.

But what does all this have to do with our level of desire?
If you ask a number of women whether they feel sexier at any particular time of the month, they will usually agree that they do, but they will not agree on when. About half of the women who notice fluctuations say that they feel most turned on half way through their cycle. However, just as many women say they feel randiest just before - or even during - their periods.

But since we all go though the same hormonal changes, why dont we all feel sexy - or not sexy - at the same point in the cycle? The truth is that nobody knows. My own personal and totally unscientific theory about those of us who claim to feel increased desire just before the period is that what were really thrilling to is the sensation of having sex when our womb lining is thickest. We seem to feel extra sensitivity in our vaginas possibly because of some kind of pressure or sense of engorgement resulting from the thicker womb lining and this enables us to enjoy the feeling of a penis inside us more than usual. This enjoyment, however, may have little to do with increased libido. Instead it may simply be a response to different physical feelings in our genitals.

What about libido?

Its important to realize that libido (desire) is a completely different thing from physical arousal in the genitals. This might seem incredible, but many women who say they have no libido are actually able to become physically aroused and have orgasms without much difficulty. What they do find difficult - or impossible - is to feel any passion or any desire for sex. Often women ask if Viagra could help turn them on to sex. The answer is no. In men, Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction - that is to say a lack of ability to get an erection. Viagra is of little use to men who are not interested in sex, because it has no effect on desire. Currently, trials are progressing to test Viagra on women, but the research is about whether Viagra causes helpful physical changes in the sex organs. It has been reported that in a few women, the drug will increase vaginal lubrication and swelling of the tissues round the vulva. But there is no possibility that it will turn uninterested women into sex bombs. And to date, Viagra is still not licensed for the treatment of women. Professor Alan Riley of the University of Central Lancashire Karma 18

Hit and miss

So, at the time of writing, the situation is still extremely muddled and women in this country who have loss of libido are quite unlikely to find a doctor who will test their hormones, or offer them hormonal treatment on the NHS.

However, there is one small exception in the case of loss of libido at the menopause. For this problem, an HRT-type drug called tibolone does now have an official licence in Britain. But in general, since we cannot absolutely attribute lack of sex drive to hormones - and since there is very little hormone treatment available even if we could perhaps we need to look at the problem another way. The first thing to say is that if you feel very definitely sexier on some days of the month than others, make sure that you and your partner capitalise on them! These are the times of the month when you should come home and go straight to bed with your loved one, some smoked salmon sandwiches and a bottle of wine - or a tub of luxury ice-cream. And if you have children, you should arrange for them to go to Grannys or to a sleep-over at a friends house. By planning to have lots of sex when its going to be great, neither you nor your partner should mind so much that there are days when all you want to offer is a quickie or a cuddle.

thinking sexy thoughts - especially on the days you think you might make love Assess how much sleep youre getting as fatigue is the biggest enemy of libido. If youre tired all the time see your doctor in case you need an iron supplement. If youre overweight and very lethargic, see your doctor in case you have an underactive thyroid. If your diet is composed of rushed sandwiches and processed foods, buy a book on nutrition and re-think what you are fuelling your body with. If nutrition seems likely to be at least part of your problem, consider contacting the Natural Health Advisory Service formerly known as the Womens Nutritional Advisory Service.

Our expectations

But what if your sex drive is pretty dormant all through the month?

Another problem nowadays may be that we expect far too much of ourselves. We, and our partners, see films and read books where women are always up for sex. But do people make films or write stories in which the women cant relax enough to have an orgasm, or when theyve got a messy period, or when theyre exhausted with juggling marriage, children and a demanding job? Not usually. Many sex experts trying to deal with loss of libido believe that hidden hostility towards the partner has a great deal to do with a lack of sex drive. Often when a woman is blaming her hormones for her lack of desire, closer inspection of the relationship reveals all sorts of stresses, strains and anger. If such a woman is fed up because her man is never romantic to her, or never takes her out, or never thanks her for a beautifully cooked meal, or always expects her to take responsibility for contraception, its hardly surprising that she doesnt feel like rewarding him in bed. Therefore, she loses interest. Addressing this kind of problem is much harder than deciding its all to do with hormones. The unpalatable truth is that its the relationship that needs changing - and that cannot be done hormonally. We often see patients who come to us because they believe that hormonal problems are at the root of their unsatisfactory love lives. After some counselling, its common for us to find that the woman has gone off sex because of some flaw in the relationship. Perhaps the man is too bossy, or overbearing, for example. Sometimes therapy can put this right especially if both the man and the woman can accept that this is in effect a relationship rather than a purely sexual problem. Occasionally, one or both partners refuse to face up the fact that there is no magic pill to cure their problems and that they need instead to make changes in the relationship and when that happens, they usually stop coming for therapy. Of course, there are specific times in a womans life when she may have most difficulty with lack of desire. For example: after the birth of a child, after a termination, after miscarriage, when suffering from pre-menstrual tension and around the menopause.

Well, the sorry fact is that you may be a bit bored in your relationship, or tired, or feeling resentful towards your partner. When we are newly in love, we usually have no problems with libido. In fact we often feel as if were permanently on heat! (There are a few women who have no apparent desire in the early stages of a relationship, but they tend to have psychological problems about allowing themselves pleasure through sex.) Of course, when we first start a relationship, everything is new and exciting so our brains are very stimulated. So maybe the answer is to work on our brains - not our hormones - to spark off our sex drives. And perhaps we need to modify our lifestyles if we are to keep our desire for sex in tip-top shape. Unfortunately, there is a tendency for relationships to become routine after a while. Sex, which before happened on occasional dates, is there on tap once people move in together. Interestingly, once we get used to the idea that we can have it anytime, we tend to have it less. Also, both partners in a relationship generally go out to work, with many working extremely long hours. So masses of people are tired, stressed and dont get round to eating properly - they are in a rut. It does seem likely that loss of libido has as much to do with these factors as it has to do with hormones. So any woman whose sex drive isnt up to much should take a very careful look at her lifestyle. Here are some tips that should improve the situation. Try to add some fresh romance into the relationship and spend quality time together. Visualize your partner as he used to look in your early days of dating and allow yourself to feel the excitement you used to feel. Exercise your mind sexually by reading erotic books or Karma 20

After giving birth

Women are told to abstain from penetrative sex after the birth of a child until they have their full medical check when the baby is about six weeks old. But many women feel a complete lack of desire for sex for several months after that. This is likely to be due to a number of reasons such as fatigue, poor nutrition, anxiety and depression. Its also because a woman frequently becomes almost obsessed with her child and doesnt seem to have much time for her partner, especially sexually. This is clearly what nature demands. It ensures that the child is well looked after. It also helps to prevent a further pregnancy so that the new baby wont have to share mum with other new siblings too soon. But is any of this to do with hormones? Many experts think that it is. They particularly attribute postnatal depression to an upset in hormones and tend to believe that the loss of libido is part of that illness. However, no one has yet managed to find any measurable change in blood hormone levels. Some specialists do offer hormonal help at this time, but it is certainly not freely available all over the country. The best thing to do in this situation is to ask your GP, the practice nurse, or your health visitor whats available on the NHS in your area. There are also a few private clinics that offer hormone treatments. However, many other doctors, psychiatrists and scientists believe that depression and loss of desire in the postnatal period can best be treated by anti-depressants - whatever its cause. When I hear from a depressed young mum, I always put her in touch with the Meet-A-Mum-Association (details below), which is an organization for women with postnatal depression. They can help by getting you support from other mums who understand what youre going through. They also keep an eye on treatments for PND up and down the country. Generally speaking, the loss of libido gradually goes away as the mother gets used to being a mum, and as she grows stronger and less tired. Men can help by being romantic and kind. The article on postnatal depression covers many aspects of the problem.

I see many women in my own psychotherapy practice who are suffering from depression and loss of desire after a termination, and I find that they recover best when they allow themselves to think about the pregnancy and the life that was once growing within them, and then to devise some kind of ritual for commemorating that life. Once this process of acknowledgement and grieving has taken place, they tend to get better quite quickly. For more help with this have a look at my article coping with a termination of pregnancy.

After a miscarriage

As after a termination, after a miscarriage a woman also has to adjust quickly to the fact that she was pregnant, but isnt anymore. This is a big psychological shift. It is also probable that her hormones are very upset at this time. Unfortunately, theres little information available about this. It is normal after a miscarriage to feel very low and to lose your sex drive, but this is probably because of natural feelings of loss. It can often help to remember your dead babys life in some way, for example by planting a rose tree or sponsoring a child overseas. You can find out more by reading the factsheet on miscarriage.

Pre-menstrual syndrome

This is a big problem for many women and most doctors now agree that it is something to do with a womans sex hormones. One theory put forward by the late Dr Katharina Dalton has been that PMS is connected with progesterone. As we have already seen, this is one of our main sex hormones and we have high levels of it during the second part of our cycle until just before we begin to menstruate. Some specialists believe that problems occur when the levels of progesterone are not high enough. However there is no consistent alteration in progesterone levels in PMS, and clinical trials have provided conflicting results. Still, a considerable number of doctors do prescribe progestogens (synthetic forms of progesterone) even though the British National Formulary says that: no convincing physiological basis for such treatment has been shown. Unfortunately, progesterone itself doesnt work by mouth. Dr Dalton herself used to prescribe natural progesterone, in the form of rectal suppositories particularly if there was an element of pre-menstrual tension. They are still available via the NHS, under the trade name Cyclogest. (Please note that they can have side-effects; do not try them without discussing possible untoward effects with your doctor.) Lack of sex drive pre-menstrually is just one of many problems experienced by women with PMS. Incidentally, there is some evidence to show that if a woman does make love at this time

After a termination

Is lack of libido a hormonal problem after a termination? Well, it may be - especially in the days immediately following the procedure. After all, one minute you were pregnant - with all sorts of hormonal changes going on - and the next minute you werent. Again, its interesting to note that most doctors do not discuss this factor with their patients. However, longer term, its much more likely that lack of desire following a termination is more closely bound up with guilt and grief. Nowadays, women frequently expect to sail through a termination believing that everything will be OK and that its a womans right to choose. Some women in fact do sail through the experience. But plenty do not.

- even if her inclination to do so is not strong - then she will actually feel better, because sex brings considerable release from tension. Earlier I mentioned the role of nutrition in the treatment of loss of desire. And when it comes to loss of desire pre-menstrually there is now an increasing amount of help and advice on offer in the alternative sector. Many health food shops can recommend food supplements and minerals that improve the condition. And the Natural Health Advisory Service (formerly known as the Womens Nutritional Advisory Service, or WNAS, claims success in treating PMS. By doing so, they found, almost by accident, that they were vastly improving womens levels of sexual desire, too. Their belief is that todays woman is simply not taking in the nutrients that she requires, and that this has a bad effect on the womans hormones. They educate the woman about nutrition and claim a very high success rate. It should be noted however that this is not a free service. Full details of this organisations charges can be found on the website - see the end of this factsheet for more information. A word here about phytoestrogens (natural plant oestrogens). These are nothing new, but in the past 10 years there has been a real surge of interest in them, particularly in relation to menopausal women. However, it may be that changing your diet to include more natural plant oestrogens could help your general health and sex drive prior to the menopause. Although, as we have seen, some experts think that PMS occurs because of insufficient progesterone, some women have found that by taking plant oestrogens, like red clover, they have experienced a reduction in PMS symptoms. Does this mean then that PMS might not be caused by a lack of progesterone and could instead be something to do with oestrogen levels dropping too far before the period? No one seems to know. Some women who get very spotty during the pre-menstrual phase - and this can be very upsetting and lead to loss of confidence and desire - have reported that eating a phytoestrogen enriched diet, or taking food supplements like red clover, actually reduces the number of spots they get.

a woman feel much healthier and more energetic and that her sex drive increases because of that. Many menopausal women are now also experimenting with a diet rich in plant oestrogens and are taking food supplements like soya or red clover. One of the benefits of these dietary changes is that the vagina becomes much more moist. And though a dry vagina is not in itself indicative of loss of sex drive, it certainly makes sex uncomfortable and as a consequence a woman may turn against sex and lose interest in it. The use of natural oestrogens in this country is in its infancy, but many women are claiming to feel various benefits from changing their diets to include them. However, please note that in 2006 the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists issued a report which warned that untoward effects and drug interactions can occur with some widely-used natural preparations for the menopause, notably St Johns wort, vitamin E and Black Cohosh.

So, is loss of sex drive a hormonal problem?

Well, the jury is still out on that one though some clinicians certainly appear to believe that testosterone can cure your lack of libido. One thing is clear; there are a number of ways that this widespread difficulty can be improved and I hope that having read all this information you will find some ways that you feel you can tackle the problem

FOR MEN:-

Get Moving. The best way to transform that potential creative energy is to get creative. Start off by getting some fresh air. Go for a walk or a run, breath deeply and consciously pull that energy from your lower abdomen up your spine into your heart and head. Think about your plans and goals, and what you can do with this energy that is waiting to be put to creative use. What about a hobby you havent had time for lately, and would love to w ork or play at? Joy of No Sex :-. There are many exercises, from the physical to the spiritual .They include the following subjects: yoga and proper breathing, acceptance of a spiritual master, study of scripture, rising early, plain living, high thinking, avoiding intoxicants, cultivating good association, cleanliness, proper physical exercise, humility, avoiding rationalizations, enthusiasm, faith in the mantra-prayer, and regulating sex in marriage. Reflect on the Bodys True Nature. One technique to allay sexual agitation is to reflect on the true nature of the material body. The body is a bag of blood, pus, urine, bile, and stool. Some gurus suggest that when we are sexually disturbed, we should think of embracing a dead body. Who lusts after a corpse? The person himself is not even there. We even say: Oh, hes gone. It is not the material body that attracts, but the infinitesimal spiritual spark on life within - that is, the soul. By thinking of the true nature of the body and the soul, we can slowly gain strength to subdue passion. This is the proper use of

Menopause

By the time you reach the menopause, there is a lot more information available about your hormones. However, much of it is unclear and conflicting. And, as I have already said, doctors are much keener to try to prevent bone loss or heart disease than to discuss whether or not our sex drives have failed. A complicating factor is the question of side-effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). During the period 2002 to 2005, it became clear that the risks of HRT were considerably greater than we had been led to believe. What about sex? When HRT first came on the market there was a lot of nonsense written about its sexy qualities. Nowadays experts play this aspect down. They tend to say that HRT makes Karma 22

intelligence. The intelligence must be used to control the mind. (4) Resurrection of the inner Light. There are some very good exercises to transform unwanted energy in the book Your Seven Energy Centers by Prophet and Spadaro. They write: There are several techniques that claim to accelerate the raising of the Kundalini. However, unless the base chakra is first balanced and cleared, these practices can be dangerous. For as the energy rises, it can activate the negatives that we are carrying around with us. For this reason, I have found it best to meditate on the upper chakras, from the heart to the crown. When we intensify the light of our upper chakras, they become magnets of light that naturally and safely draw up the energy from the base chakra. An effective way to purify and accelerate all our chakras is to access the high-frequency spiritual energy known as the violet flame through prayer and meditation The meditation and affirmation on the following pages (in next paragraph) can also help balance and clear the base chakra.

As the cells and atoms accelerate, they begin to spin - releasing the white light to clear and energize your body, mind and emotions. As you recite this affirmation, stand with your arms raised over your head. Imagine that you are directing the energy that is rising up the network of your chakras back to God. Mantra: I AM the resurrection and the life of every cell and atom of my being now made manifest! (5) Visualizing Victory. Working with our subconscious can be a great help in overcoming unwanted habits. You can adjust the technique for whatever goal you are working on. Holding on Tight. (Especially effective for overcoming masturbation.) If youre lying in bed and feeling tempted with unwanted sexual indulgence, your mind will often try to convince you just to scratch or rub around your pelvic area to help alleviate the desire, which might be enough to let you fall asleep. Dont give into it! As soon as you start physical movement, you start the ball rolling, and its sometimes hard to stop it. Rather, make the determination to keep totally still, and put your attention on Spirit (God or your Real Self etc.) Commit to relying totally on it to fulfill all your needs. You can even use Jesus affirmation: I AM (God in me is) the fulfilment of all my needs and requirements of the hour. Imagine yourself holding

Mantra for the Resurrection of the inner Light.

Visualization: As you say the following affirmation, see and feel the light within you as a mother-of-pearl softness bathing your body in a gentle, suffusing glow. See the light surround every cell and atom of your body, becoming whiter and whiter.

tight onto the silver cord that links you to Spirit. (6) Or you can even put your hands on your opposite shoulder, like hugging yourself, if it helps. Breathe deeply and concentrate on drawing that creative energy up your spine to your heart. Be determined to lie perfectly still, at peace, holding on tight to that higher power which is your true nature, until you fall asleep. Devotion to the Feminine Aspect of Being. In esoteric teachings, the physical plane is the feminine polarity of being, and Spirit is the masculine, which is all part of God, who is androgynous. Also, our base-of-thespine chakra (energy centre) is the feminine polarity of our being, and our crown chakra is the masculine. The (Goddess) Kundalini is the mother flame that rises up the spine to nourish all of our chakras. There are many books and practices that can teach you how to raise your Kundalini to attain spiritual powers. But that very motive has an element of ambition and pride. This usually results in the Kundalini being pushed up the spine prematurely, and causes more harm than good. (Its like trying to take heaven by force.) The best and safest way is to draw that mother flame up as it is ready to, which is done through devotion to the feminine aspect of being. These are all the virtues and qualities that we have come to love in mothers. This is what is happening in Catholics when they lovingly give the rosary, or to those in the East when they give devotions to Kuan Yin or the feminine aspects of God as Kali, Durga etc. This is not idolatry when you understand and give devotion to the flame of God which is behind the form representation. If you dont feel comfortable with the Catholic rosary, there is a New Age rosary. You can find more on this on The Summit Lighthouse website at www.tsl.org under Teachings/Masters/Mother Mary. But if you dont feel comfortable with any of that, then just feeling love and gratitude for Mother Nature will help. The more you value the sanctity of life, the more likely your energy will rise up your spine and not get diverted into sexual over-indulgence. Yin/Yang Balance (including diet). Too much or two little sexual energy is usually due to an imbalance in our yin/yang energies. These are influenced by many things, including our diet. This is a complex subject, and you can read a bit more on it on the Macrobiotics page, which also has many references for further study. One of those books, Healing Ourselves by Naboru Muramoto, covers Sexual Problems, from impotency to excessive desire (page 132). It makes several interesting points: In men, excess meat (yang) and other highprotein foods cause excessive sexual desire. Eat very yin foods to ease it, like fruit and other sweet foods, tomatoes and eggplant. But the best remedy of all is to follow a healthy, balanced diet and to chew the food very well. Chewing strengthens the sexual organs since they are connected to the jaw muscles. He says that black beans are recommended for women with sexual problems. They will help cure frigidity and irregular Karma 24

menstruation, if prepared correctly. (Described elsewhere in the book). He also says, Abortions are a possible source of breast cancer. Even though a woman has had an abortion, the pregnancy process continues. The body started to prepare to produce milk and was stopped abruptly from doing so. This interference can initiate breast cancer which will surface when the woman is forty or fifty. There is no such problem with miscarriage. for which all parts of the body are prepared. Heat is also yang, so hot weather or a hot bath or shower will tend to increase sexual drive. To reduce sexual energy, have a cold shower, although this isnt easy to convince your body to do. But what works well is a short very hot shower. Then, when you cant wait for the cold water, turn it on, as much as you can handle. It takes your breath away at first, but its a great regenerator! It also alkalizes your blood, which is great for general good health. If you do it regularly after a hot shower, to help close your pores, youll be able to handle colder and colder water, and will probably start looking forward to it. Its great! Strengthening Your Resolve. If you dont feel totally motivated to overcome excess sexual desire, its good to prime the pump by reading up on and listing the pros and cons of indulging it. Some of the material referred to on this page will give you a good start, plus the poem Withdrawal Symptoms on the Inspirational Poems page. But dont put this off until youre feeling really hot, as you probably wont have the patience to read it. Also contemplate what your goals are in this life, and what it is that your soul really desires to get out of the indulgence (including comfort, as described below.) Making a Vow. One of the most effective, quickest and cleanest methods is to make a vow to stop the excessive indulgence. Just as Christians give up certain worldly pleasures during Lent, so you can make a vow to whoever you respect most in this life, to permanently give up a bad habit. Its much easier when indulgence is no longer even an option. Dont make a vow lightly, but if youre serious, and you break it later, dont give up. Forgive yourself, renew your resolve, remake you vow, and move onward and upward! Getting the Comfort You Need. Sometimes the desire for sex is really just the need for comfort, encouragement or feeling worthy. The fact is that we, as a loving parent to our soul (like a child), are the only one who can effectively give it, and who is responsible for giving it. No other person or sensual indulgence can really achieve it. It is done best through inner dialogue, which is a part of personal psychology work. No matter how often we have sex or get positive feedback from others, if we do not acknowledge our own self-worth, we will always be needy. Prayer Before Sex. You can help make the most out of sex by praying for the protection of the experience and of your energies. Here is an example taken from a prayer . ( think about your ishta Devatha)I call to beloved xxxxxxxxxxx for the sealing and protection of the light in my and my partners aura and chakras from any darkness entering into them during sexual intercourse. I call for the transmutation of all sexual energies into creative endeavors other than procreation (if you are not intending to conceive a child).

herb can enhance sexual desire, energy, performance, and orgasm in both men and women. Other studies suggest that the herb can also help some men prolong stamina. And for women, Rhodiala Rosea may counteract some of the unpleasant side effects of menopause. This herb is commonly found at any health store in tablet form and no side effects or prescription interactions have been reported.

Ginseng

Ginseng, which works in ways similar to Ginko Biloba (see below), increases blood flow through a mans lower extremities, but it has also shown promise in helping women boost their desire, performance, energy, and orgasm. This is most likely due to affecting the dopamine system, which is the complex system of the brain that researchers believe triggers sex drive. More than half of all men and women in studies with Ginseng report an improvement of being in the mood more often. In general, ginseng has been found to be perfectly safe for use, except in pregnant or breastfeeding women, because of its estrogen-like effects. The only other common effect from its use is producing excitability, but thats exactly what were after here!

Rhodiola Rosea

Maca (Peruvian Ginseng)

Better known as Peruvian Ginseng, this herb grows in the highaltitude areas of Peru. The Incas have passed down the stories of the roots legendary powers for generations. Maca is known for improving lust and orgasm in both men and women, and for having a, shall we say, Viagra-like effect. Used to give ancient Peruvian warriors added strength in battle, it was also kept away from women while the warriors were away (perhaps for fear of what might transpire while they were gone?). This herb has shown fairly consistent findings in animals and humans to increase stamina and libido in both genders, as reported by Discovery Health. So far there have been no cases of toxicity in this herb, which makes it relatively safe to take by just about anyone.

Horny Goat Weed

Just as its name implies, horny goat weed is a leafy, high-altitude plant which has long been believed to, er, boost the libido. For men in particular, this herb is believed to play a role in the correction of erectile dysfunction, or ED. The problem with the herb is that it appears to be inconsistent in its commercial preparation, which means if you get a bad batch, it wont do what it is supposed to. This herb can be most easily digested in tea form and has no known side effects when taken in this fashion.

H.H Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar How Black Magic/ Kala Jadoo done?
Black magic is manipulation of energy for the purpose harming somebody. There is no god or devil involved in this. It is pure energy manipulation. The same energy can be used for good purposes as well. The devil, satan etc are all figments of the imagination. Its only energy that has been manipulated. One thing is certain and from experience i can say that the person who does black magic on others gets back the same amount of negative energy often resulting in a horrific death of the black magician. It is ok to know and learn about this subject but stay away from practicing it. The victims clothes, hair, nails etc are used in this ceremony. Energy is then manipulated to attack the victim directly. When negative energy is concentrated in such a manner the result is death, pestilence, bad luck etc. If the victim prays to a higher energy source or asks a tantric for the black magic to be reversed then the black magician gets back the negative energy multiplied thousand fold and is doomed. If you see a banana leaf with rice, turmeric and strange looking things on it do not step on it. Move away from it as it is all the negative black energy in concentrated form. Bottom line is...Stay away from people who practice this.

We get very little even after the best of our efforts, we toil to get success in our business but the profits are too little. We do not want any discontentment or discord in our family life, but inspite of our best efforts, the peace and tranquility of our family is disturbed. On the other hand people work very little, but get too much in return. Businessmen have ample wealth just be putting in little efforts, bit we are disappointed even after continuous efforts. It leads us to conclude, that there are some evil forces which make our strategies unsuccessful. Common Black Magic Spells:- Black magic can most often be found in the uses of love magic. Unfortunately, most people who cast love spells are trying to force another person to love them or another. Despite the fact that people often associate good feelings with love, in forcing another person to fall in love, there is certainly a violation in that persons free will.

Is Someone using Black Magic On U?

Due to jealousy, heart burning or some base cause, the Tantriks use cheap tactics to overcome the adversaries, which ruins ones life. Are you also under such a spell? We must have peace and happiness in life, and to achieve the same we work hard. But we do not get in return to the proportions of our labor. Black magic. Whats the point? You can easily do as much damage to someone (and yourself) with conventional means. Karma 28

Why The People Is Suffering:

Some Tantrics expertise is in Black Magic which for material purposes tortures the victim it is directed toward. In this way those souls are at the mercy of selfish and greedy people. Such tantrics have made Black Magic their profession simply to make money. Thus the happy lives of the victims are spoiled. Such so-called Black Magicians no doubt can harm others, but they do not possess the powers to retract or counter such Tantrics moves. As a result the victim keeps on suffering, and sometimes it leads to despair and even the death of the victim. It is easy to cause others harm through Tantra, but very difficult to mend the damage done. In order to disclose the art of saving - curing, one has to undergo Sadhana and attain the Siddhi (perfection), only a Tantrik of high caliber can do so. Perplexed by the seemingly inexplicable, apparent disparity that existed among humanity, a young truth-seeker approached the Buddha and questioned him regarding this intricate problem of inequality: What is the cause, what is the reason, O Lord, questioned he, that we find amongst mankind the short-lived and long-lived, the healthy and the diseased, the ugly and beautiful, those lacking influence and the powerful, the poor and the rich, the low-born and the high-born, and the ignorant and the wise? All living beings have actions (Karma) as their own, their inheritance, their congenital cause, their kinsman, their refuge. It is Karma that differentiates beings into low and high states. He then explained the cause of such differences in accordance with the law of cause and effect. Certainly we are born with hereditary characteristics. At the same time we possess certain innate abilities that science cannot adequately account for. To our parents we are indebted for the gross sperm and ovum that form the nucleus of this so-called being. They remain dormant within each parent until this potential germinal compound is vitalised by the karmic energy needed for the production of the foetus. Karma is therefore the indispensable conceptive cause of this being. The accumulated karmic tendencies, inherited in the course of previous lives, at times play a far greater role than the hereditary parental cells and genes in the formation of both physical and mental characteristics. The Buddha, for instance, inherited, like every other person, the reproductive cells and genes from his parents. But physically, morally and intellectually there was none comparable to him in his long line of Royal ancestors. In the Buddhas own words, he belonged not to the Royal lineage, but to that of the Aryan Buddhas. He was certainly a superman, an extraordinary creation of his own Karma. According to the Lakkhana Sutta of Digha Nikaya, the Buddha inherited exceptional features, such as the 32 major marks, as the result of his past meritorious deeds. The ethical reason for acquiring each physical feature is clearly explained in the Sutta. It is obvious from this unique case that karmic tendencies could not only influence our physical organism, but also nullify the potentiality of the parental cells and genes hence the significance of the Buddhas enigmatic

The Buddhas reply was:

Karma is the law of moral causation. The theory of Karma is a fundamental doctrine in Buddhism. This belief was prevalent in India before the advent of the Buddha. Nevertheless, it was the Buddha who explained and formulated this doctrine in the complete form in which we have it today. What is the cause of the inequality that exists among mankind? Why should one person be brought up in the lap of luxury, endowed with fine mental, moral and physical qualities, and another in absolute poverty, steeped in misery? Why should one person be a mental prodigy, and another an idiot? Why should one person be born with saintly characteristics and another with criminal tendencies? Why should some be linguistic, artistic, mathematically inclined, or musical from the very cradle? Why should others be congenitally blind, deaf, or deformed? Why should some be blessed, and others cursed from their births? Either this inequality of mankind has a cause, or it is purely accidental. No sensible person would think of attributing this unevenness, this inequality, and this diversity to blind chance or pure accident. In this world nothing happens to a person that he does not for some reason or other deserve. Usually, men of ordinary intellect cannot comprehend the actual reason or reasons. The definite invisible cause or causes of the visible effect is not necessarily confined to the present life, they may be traced to a proximate or remote past birth. According to Buddhism, this inequality is due not only to heredity, environment, nature and nurture, but also to Karma. In other words, it is the result of our own past actions and our own present doings. We ourselves are responsible for our own happiness and misery. We create our own Heaven. We create our own Hell. We are the architects of our own fate. Karma 34

statement, We are the heirs of our own actions. Dealing with this problem of variation, the Atthasalini, being a commentary on the Abhidharma, states: Depending on this difference in Karma appears the differences in the birth of beings, high and low, base and exalted, happy and miserable. Depending on the difference in Karma appears the difference in the individual features of beings as beautiful and ugly, high-born or low born, well-built or deformed. Depending on the difference in Karma appears the difference in worldly conditions of beings, such as gain and loss, and disgrace, blame and praise, happiness and misery. Thus, from a Buddhist point of view, our present mental, moral intellectual and temperamental differences are, for the most part, due to our own actions and tendencies, both past and present. Although Buddhism attributes this variation to Karma, as being the chief cause among a variety, it does not, however, assert that everything is due to Karma. The law of Karma, important as it is, is only one of the twenty-four conditions described in Buddhist Philosophy. Refuting the erroneous view that whatsoever fortune or misfortune experienced is all due to some previous action, the Buddha said: So, then, according to this view, owing to previous action men will become murderers, thieves, unchaste, liars, slanderers, covetous, malicious and perverts. Thus, for those who fall back on the former deeds as the essential reason, there is neither the desire to do, nor effort to do, nor necessity to do this deed, or abstain from this deed. It was this important text, which states the belief that all physical circumstances and mental attitudes spring solely

from past Karma that Buddha contradicted. If the present life is totally conditioned or wholly controlled by our past actions, then certainly Karma is tantamount to fatalism or determinism or predestination. If this were true, free will would be an absurdity. Life would be purely mechanistic, not much different from a machine. Being created by an Almighty God who controls our destinies and predetermines our future, or being produced by an irresistible Karma that completely determines our fate and controls our lifes course, independent of any free action on our part, is essentially the same. The only difference lies in the two words God and Karma. One could easily be substituted for the other, because the ultimate operation of both forces would be identical. Such a fatalistic doctrine is not the Buddhist law of Karma. According to Buddhism, there are five orders or processes (niyama) which operate in the physical and mental realms.

Karma 35

They are: Utu Niyama

Physical inorganic order, e.g. seasonal phenomena of winds and rains. The unerring order of seasons, characteristic seasonal changes and events, causes of winds and rains, nature of heat, etc., all belong to this group.

Yogis have performed levitation. Psychic law is equally mechanistic, but Buddhist training aims at control of mind, which is possible by right understanding and skilful volition. Karma law operates quite automatically and, when the Karma is powerful, man cannot interfere with its inexorable result though he may desire to do so; but here also right understanding and skilful volition can accomplish much and mould the future. Good Karma, persisted in, can thwart the reaping of bad Karma, or as some Western scholars prefer to say action influence, is certainly an intricate law whose working is fully comprehended only by a Buddha. The Buddhist aims at the final destruction of all Karma. The Pali term Karma literally means action or doing. Any kind of intentional action whether mental, verbal, or physical, is regarded as Karma. It covers all that is included in the phrase thought, word and deed. Generally speaking, all good and bad action constitutes Karma. In its ultimate sense Karma means all moral and immoral volition. Involuntary, unintentional or unconscious actions, though technically deeds, do not constitute Karma, because volition, the most important factor in determining Karma, is absent.

Bija Niyama

Order of germs and seeds (physical organic order), e.g. rice produced from rice-seed, sugary taste from sugar-cane or honey, peculiar characteristics of certain fruits, etc. The scientific theory of cells and genes and the physical similarity of twins may be ascribed to this order.

Karma Niyama

The Buddha says:

Order of act and result, e.g., desirable and undesirable acts produce corresponding good and bad results. As surely as water seeks its own level so does Karma, given opportunity, produce its inevitable result, not in the form of a reward or punishment but as an innate sequence. This sequence of deed and effect is as natural and necessary as the way of the sun and the moon.

I declare, O Bhikkhus, that volition is Karma. Having willed one acts by body, speech, and thought. Every volitional action of individuals, save those of Buddhas and Arahants, is called Karma. The exception made in their case is because they are delivered from both good and evil; they have eradicated ignorance and craving, the roots of Karma.Destroyed are their germinal seeds (Khina bija); selfish desires no longer

Dhamma Niyama

Order of the norm, e.g., the natural phenomena occurring at the advent of a Bodhisattva in his last birth. Gravitation and other similar laws of nature. The natural reason for being good and so forth, may be included in this group

Cita Niyama

Order or mind or psychic law, e.g., processes of consciousness, arising and perishing of consciousness, constituents of consciousness, power of mind, etc., including telepathy, telaesthesia, retro-cognition, premonition, clairvoyance, clairaudience, thought-reading and such other psychic phenomena which are inexplicable to modern science. Every mental or physical phenomenon could be explained by these allembracing five orders or processes which are laws in themselves. Karma as such is only one of these five orders. Like all other natural laws they demand no lawgiver. Of these five, the physical inorganic order and the order of the norm are more or less mechanistic, though they can be controlled to some extent by human ingenuity and the power of mind. For example, fire normally burns, and extreme cold freezes, but man has walked scathe less over fire and meditated naked on Himalayan snows; horticulturists have worked marvels with flowers and fruits. Karma 36

grow, states the Ratna Sutta of Sutta nipata. This does not mean that the Buddha and Arahantas are passive. They are tirelessly active in working for the real well being and happiness of all. Their deeds ordinarily accepted as good or moral, lack creative power as regards themselves. Understanding things as they truly are, they have finally shattered their cosmic fetters the chain of cause and effect. Karma does not necessarily mean past actions. It embraces both past and present deeds. Hence in one sense, we are the result of what we were; we will be the result of what we are. In another sense, it should be added, we are not totally the result of what we were; we will not absolutely be the result of what we are. The present is no doubt the offspring of the past and is the present of the future, but the present is not always a true index of either the past or the future; so complex is the working of Karma. It is this doctrine of Karma that the mother teaches her child when she says, Be good and you will be happy and we will love you; but if you are bad, you will be unhappy and we will not love you. In short, Karma is the law of cause and effect in the ethical realm. Karma is action, and vipaka, fruit or result, is its reaction. Just as every object is accompanied by a shadow, even so every volitional activity is inevitably accompanied by its due effect. Karma is like potential seed: Vipaka could be likened to the fruit arising from the tree the effect or result. Anisamsa and Adinaya are the leaves, flowers and so forth that correspond to external differences such as health, sickness and poverty these are inevitable consequences, which happen at the same time. Strictly speaking, both Karma and Vipaka pertain to the mind. As Karma may be good or bad, so may Vipaka, the fruit is good or bad. As Karma is mental so vipaka is mental (of the mind). It is experienced as happiness, bliss, unhappiness or misery, according to the nature of the Karma seed. Anisamsa are the concomitant advantages material things such as prosperity, health and longevity. When vipakas concomitant material things are disadvantageous, they are known as Adinaya, full of wretchedness, and appear as poverty, ugliness, disease, short life-span and so forth. As we sow, we reap somewhere and sometime, in his life or in a future birth. What we reap today is what we have sown either in the present or in the past.

good or evil. Theists, who attempt to explain everything in this and temporal life and in the eternal future life, ignoring a past, believe in a postmortem justice, and may regard present happiness and misery as blessings and curses conferred on His creation by an omniscient and omnipotent Divine Ruler who sits in heaven above controlling the destinies of the human race. Buddhism, which emphatically denies such an Almighty, All merciful God-Creator and an arbitrarily created immortal soul, believes in natural law and justice which cannot be suspended by either an Almighty God or an All-compassionate Buddha. According to this natural law, acts bear their own rewards and punishments to the individual doer whether human justice finds out or not. There are some who criticize thus: So, you Buddhists, too, administer capitalistic opium to the people, saying: You are born poor in this life on account of your past evil karma. He is born rich on account of his good Karma. So, be satisfied with your humble lot; but do good to be rich in your next life. You are being oppressed now because of your past evil Karma. There is your destiny. Be humble and bear your sufferings patiently. Do good now. You can be certain of a better and happier life after death. The Buddhist doctrine of Karma does not expound such ridiculous fatalistic views. Nor does it vindicate a postmortem justice. The All-Merciful Buddha, who had no ulterior selfish motives, did not teach this law of Karma to protect the rich and comfort the poor by promising illusory happiness in an afterlife. While we are born to a state created by ourselves, yet by our own self-directed efforts there is every possibility for us to create new, favorable environments even here and now. Not only individually, but also, collectively, we are at liberty to create fresh Karma that leads either towards our progress or downfall in this very life. According to the Buddhist doctrine of Karma, one is not always compelled by an iron necessity, for Karma is neither fate, nor predestination imposed upon us by

The Samyutta Nikaya states:

According to the seed thats sown, So is the fruit you reap there from, Doer of good will gather good, Doer of evil, evil reaps, Down is the seed and thou shalt taste The fruit thereof. Karma is a law in itself, which operates in its own field without the intervention of any external, independent ruling agency. Happiness and misery, which are the common lot of humanity, are the inevitable effects of causes. From a Buddhist point of view, they are not rewards and punishments, assigned by a supernatural, omniscient ruling power to a soul that has done

some mysterious unknown power to which we must helplessly submit ourselves. It is ones own doing reacting on oneself, and so one has the possibility to divert the course of ones Karma to some extent. How far one diverts it depends on oneself. Is one bound to reap all that one has sown in just proportion?

Buddhists, therefore, do not believe in an unchanging entity, in an actor apart from action, in a perceiver apart from perception, in a conscious subject behind consciousness. Who then, is the doer of Karma? Who experiences the effect? Volition, or Will (tetana), is itself the doer, Feeling (vedana) is itself the reaper of the fruits of actions. Apart from these pure mental states (suddhadhamma) there is no-one to sow and no-one to reap. With respect to different functions, Karma is classified into four kinds:

The Buddha provides an answer:

If anyone says that a man or woman must reap in this life according to his present deeds, in that case there is no religious life, nor is an opportunity afforded for the entire extinction of sorrow. But if anyone says that what a man or woman reaps in this and future lives accords with his or her deeds present and past, in that case there is a religious life, and an opportunity is afforded for the entire extinction of a sorrow. (Anguttara Nikaya) Although it is stated in the Dhammapada that not in the sky, nor in mid-ocean, or entering a mountain cave is found that place on earth where one may escape from (the consequences of) an evil deed, yet one is not bound to pay all the past arrears of ones Karma. If such were the case emancipation would be impossibility. Eternal recurrence would be the unfortunate result. Ignorance (avijja), or not knowing things as they truly are, is the chief cause of Karma. Dependent on ignorance arise activities (avijja paccaya samkhara) states the Buddha in the Paticca Samuppada (Dependent Origination). Associated with ignorance is the ally craving (tanha), the other root of Karma. Evil actions are conditioned by these two causes. All good deeds of a worldling (putthujana), though associated with the three wholesome roots of generosity (alobha), goodwill (adosa) and knowledge (amoha), are nevertheless regarded as Karma because the two roots of ignorance and craving are dormant in him. The moral types of Supramundane Path Consciousness (magga citta) are not regarded as Karma because they tend to eradicate the two root causes. Who is the doer of Karma? Who reaps the fruit of Karma? Does Karma mould a soul? In answering these subtle questions, the Venerable Buddhaghosa writes in the Visuddhi Magga: No doer is there who does the deed; Nor is there one who feels the fruit; Constituent parts alone roll on; This indeed! Is right discernment. For instance, the table we see is apparent reality. In an ultimate sense the so-called table consists of forces and qualities. For ordinary purposes a scientist would use the term water, but in the laboratory he would say H 20. In this same way, for conventional purposes, such terms as man, woman, being, self, and so forth are used. The so-called fleeting forms consist of psychophysical phenomena, which are constantly changing not remaining the same for two consecutive moments. Karma 38

1. Reproductive Karma

Every birth is conditioned by a past good or bad karma, which predominated at the moment of death. Karma that conditions the future birth is called Reproductive Karma. The death of a person is merely a temporary end of a temporary phenomenon. Though the present form perishes, another form which is neither the same nor absolutely different takes its place, according to the potential thought-vibration generated at the death moment, because the Karmic force which propels the life-flux still survives. It is this last thought, which is technically called Reproductive(janaka) Karma, that determines the state of a person in his subsequent birth. This may be either a good or bad Karma. According to the Commentary, Reproductive Karma is that which produces mental aggregates and material aggregates at the moment of conception. The initial consciousness, which is termed the patisandhi rebirth consciousness, is conditioned by this Reproductive (janaka) Karma. Simultaneous with the arising of the rebirth-consciousness, there arise the body-decad, sexdecad and base-decad (kaya-bhavavatthu dasakas). (decad = 10 factors). (a) The body-decad is composed of: The element of extension (prithvi), The element of cohesion (apo), The element of heat (tajo), The element of motion (vayu). (b) The four derivatives (upadana rupa), Color (varna), Odor (gandha), Taste (rasa), Nutritive Essence (oja). These eight (mahabhuta 4 + upadana 4 = 8) are collectively called Avinibhoga Rupa (indivisable form or indivisable matter). (c) Vitality (jivitindriya) and Body (kaya) These (avinibhoga 8 + jivitindriya 1 + Kaya 1 = 10) ten are collectively called Body-decad =(Kaya dasaka). Sex-decad and Base-decad also consist of the first nine, sex (bhava) and seat of consciousness(vathu) respectively (i.e. eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body). From this, it is evident that the sex of a person is determined at the very conception of a being. It is conditioned by Karma and is not a fortuitous combination of sperm and ovum cells. The Pain and Happiness one experiences in the course of ones lifetime are the inevitable consequence of Reproductive Karma. 2. SUPPORTIVE KARMA That which comes near the Reproductive (janaka) Kamma and supports it. It is neither good nor bad and it assists or maintains

the action of the Reproductive (janaka) Karma in the course of ones lifetime. Immediately after conception till the death moment this Karma steps forward to support the Reproductive Karma. A moral supportive (kusala upathambhaka) Karma assists in giving health, wealth, happiness etc. to the being born with a moral Reproductive Karma. An immoral supportive Karma, on the other hand, assists in giving pain, sorrow, etc. to the being born with an immoral reproductive(akusala janaka) Karma, as for instance to a beast of burden.

crimes, his good Karma would be obliterated by the powerful evil Karma. His subsequent birth would be conditioned by the evil Karma in spite of his having gained the jhana earlier. Devadatta lost his psychic power and was born in an evil state, because he wounded the Buddha and caused a schism in the Sangha. King Ajatasatru would have attained the first stage of Sainthood (Sotapanna) if he had not committed patricide. In this case the powerful evil Karma acted as an obstacle to his gaining Sainthood.

3. OBSTRUCTIVE KARMA OR COUNTERACTIVE KARMA

Which, unlike the former, tends to weaken, interrupt and retard the fruition of the Reproductive Karma. For instance, a person born with a good Reproductive Karma may be subject to various ailments etc., thus preventing him from enjoying the blissful results of his good actions. An animal, on the other hand, who is born with a bad Reproductive Karma may lead a comfortable life by getting good food, lodging, etc., as a result of his good counteractive or obstructive (upabidaka) Karma preventing the fruition of the evil Reproductive Karma.

PROXIMATE (ASANNA) PROXIMATE KARMA

KARMA OR

DEATH-

4. DESTRUCTIVE (UPAGHATAKA) KARMA

According to the law of Karma the potential energy of the Reproductive Karma could be nullified by a mere powerful opposing Karma of the past, which, seeking an opportunity, may quite unexpectedly operate, just as a powerful counteractive force can obstruct the path of a flying arrow and bring it down to the ground. Such an action is called Destructive (upaghataka) Karma, which is more effective than the previous two in that it is not only obstructive but also destroys the whole force. This Destructive Karma also may be either good or bad. As an instance of operation of all the four, the case of Devadatta, who attempted to kill the Buddha and who caused a schism in the Sangha (disciples of the Buddha) may be cited. His good Reproductive Karma brought him birth in a royal family. His continued comfort and prosperity were due to the action of the Supportive Karma. The Counteractive or Obstructive Karma came into operation when he was subject to much humiliation as a result of his being excommunicated from the Sangha. Finally the Destructive Karma brought his life to a miserable end. There is another classification of Karma, according to the priority of effect:

This is that which one does or remembers immediately before the moment of dying. Owing to the great part it plays in determining the future birth, much importance is attained to this deathbed (asanna) Karma in almost all Buddhist countries. The customs of reminding the dying man of good deeds and making him do good acts on his deathbed still prevails in Buddhist countries. Sometimes a bad person may die happily and receive a good birth if he remembers or does a good act at the last moment. A story runs that a certain executioner who casually happened to give some alms to the Venerable Sariputta remembered this good act at the dying moment and was born in a state of bliss. This does not mean that although he enjoys a good birth he will be exempt from the effects of the evil deeds which he accumulated during his lifetime. They will have there due effect as occasions arise. At times a good person may die unhappy by suddenly remembering an evil act of his or by harboring some unpleasant thought, perchance compelled by unfavorable circumstances. In the scriptures, Queen Mallika, the consort of King Kosala, remembering a lie she had uttered, suffered for about seven days in a state of misery when she lied to her husband to cover some misbehavior. These are exceptional cases. Such reverse changes of birth account for the birth of virtuous children to vicious parents and of vicious children to virtuous parents. As a result of the last thought moment being conditioned by the general conduct of the person.

HABITUAL (ACCINA) KARMA

WEIGHTY (GARUKA) KARMA.

This is either weighty or serious may be either good or bad. It produces its results in this life or in the next for certain. If good, it is purely mental as in the case of Jhana (ecstasy or absorption). Otherwise it is verbal or bodily. On the Immoral side, there are five immediate effective heinous crimes(pancanantariya karma): Matricide, Patricide, and the murder of an Arahant, the wounding of a Buddha and the creation of a schism in the Sangha. Permanent Scepticism (Niyata Micchaditthi) is also termed one of the Weighty (garuka) Karmas. If, for instance, any person were to develop the jhana (ecstasy or absorption) and later were to commit one of these heinous

It is that which on habitually performs and recollects and for which one has a great liking. Habits whether good or bad becomes ones second nature, tending to form the character of a person. At unguarded moments one often lapses into ones habitual mental mindset. In the same way, at the death-moment, unless influenced by other circumstances, one usually recalls to mind ones habitual deeds. Cunda, a butcher, who was living in the vicinity of the Buddhas monastery, died yelling like an animal because he was earning his living by slaughtering pigs. King Dutthagamini of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was in the habit of giving alms to the Bhikkhus (monks) before he took his own meals. It was his habitual Karma that gladdened him at the dying moment and gave him birth in the Tusita heaven.

RESERVE OR CUMULATIVE (KATATTA) KARMA

This literally means because done. All actions that are not included in the aforementioned and those actions soon forgotten

belong to this category. This is, as it were the reserve fund of a particular being. There is another classification of Karma according to the time in which effects are worked out: Immediately Effective (ditthadhammavedaniya) Karma, Subsequently Effective (uppapajjavedaniya) Karma, Indefinitely Effective (aparapariyavedaniya) Karma, and Defunct or Ineffective (ahosi) Karma. Immediately Effective Karma is that which is experienced in this present life. According to the Abhidhamma one does both good and evil during the javana process (thought-impulsion), which usually lasts for seven thought-moments. The effect of the first thought-moment, being the weakest, one may reap in this life itself. This is called the Immediately Effective Karma. If it does not operate in this life, it is called Defunct or Ineffective Karma. The next weakest is the seventh thought-moment. Its effect one may reap in the subsequence birth. This is called Subsequently Effective Karma. This, too, is called Defunct or Ineffective Karma if it does not operate in the second birth. The effect of the intermediate thought-moments may take place at any time until one attains Nibbana. This type of Karma is known as Indefinitely Effective Karma. No one, not even the Buddhas and Arahantas, is exempt from this class of Karma which one may experience in the course of ones wandering in Samsara. There is no special class of Karma known as Defunct or Ineffective, but when such actions that should produce their effects in this life or in a subsequent life do not operate, they are termed Defunct or Ineffective Karma. The last classification of Karma is according to the plane in which the effect takes place, namely: Evil Actions (akusala kamma) which may ripen in the sentient planes (kammaloka). (Six celestial planes plus one human plane plus four woeful planes = eleven kamaloka planes.) Here are only four woeful kamalokas. Good Actions (kusala kamma) which may ripen in the sentient planes except for the four woeful planes. Good Actions (kusala kamma) which may ripen in the Realm of Form (rupa brahamalokas). There are four Arupa Brahma Lokas. Question: Do the Karmas of parents determine or affect the Karmas of their children? Answer: Physically, the Karma of children is generally determined by the Karma of their parents. Thus, healthy parents usually have healthy offspring, and unhealthy parents have Karma 40

unhealthy children. On the effect or how the Karma of their children is determined: the childs Karma is a thing apart of itself it forms the childs individuality, the sum-total of its merits and demerits accumulated in innumerable past existences. For example, the Karma of the Buddha-to-be, Prince Siddhartha was certainly not influenced by the joint Karma of his parents, King Suddhodana and Queen Maya. The glorious and powerful Karma of our Buddha-to-be transcended the Karma of his parents which jointly were more potent than his own. Question: If the Karma of parents do not influence those of their children, how would the fact be explained that parents who suffer from certain virulent diseases are apt to transmit these evils to their offspring? Answer: Where a child inherits such a disease it is due to the force of the parents characteristics because of the force of the latters Utu (conditions favorable to germination). Take, for example, two seeds from a sapling; plant one in inferior, dry soil; and the other in rich, moist soil. The result is that the first seed will sprout into a sickly sapling and soon show symptoms of disease and decay; while the other seed will thrive and flourish and grow up to be a tall and healthy tree. It will be observed that the pair of seeds taken from the same stock grows up differently according to the soil into which they are put. A childs past Karma may be compared to the seed: the physical disposition of the mother to the soil; and that of the father to the moisture, which fertilized the soil. Roughly speaking, to illustrate our subject, we will say that, representing the saplings germination, growth, and existence as a unit, the seed is responsible for onetenth of them, the soil for six-tenths, and the moisture for the remainder, three-tenths. Thus, although the power of germination exists potentially in the seed (the child), its growth is powerfully determined and quickened by the soil (the mother) and the moisture (the father). Therefore, even as the conditions of the soil and moisture must be taken as largely responsible factors in the growth and condition of the tree. So must the influences of the parents (or progenitors, as in the case of the animal world) be taken into account in respect to the conception and growth of their offspring? The parents share in the Karma determining the physical factors of their issue is as follows: If they are human beings, then their offspring will be a human being. If they are cattle then their issue must be of their species. If the human being is Chinese, then their offspring must be of their race. Thus, the offspring are invariably of the same genera and species, etc., as those of the progenitors. It will be seen from the above that, although a childs Karma is very powerful in itself, if cannot remain wholly uninfluenced by those of it parents. It is apt to inherit the physical characteristic of its parents. Yet, it may occur that the childs Karma, being superlatively powerful, the influence of the parents joint Karma cannot overshadow it. Of course, it need hardly be pointed out that the evil influences of parents can also be counteracted by the application of medical science. All beings born of sexual cohabitation are the resultant effects of three forces:

The old Karma of past existence; The seminal fluid of the mother, and The seminal fluid of the father. The physical dispositions of the parents may, or may not, be equal in force. One may counteract the other to a lesser or greater extent. The childs Karma and physical characteristics, such as race, color, etc., will be the produce of the three forces. Question: On the death of a sentient being, is there a soul that wanders about at will? Answer: When a sentient being leaves one existence, it is reborn either as a human being, a celestial being, (Deva or Brahama), and inferior animal, or a denizen of one of the regions of hell. The sceptics and the ignorant people held that there are intermediate stages antrabhava between these; and that there are being who are neither of the human, the celestial, the Deva or the Brahma worlds nor of any one of the stages of exist recognised in the scriptures but are in an intermediate stage. Some assert that these transitional stages are possessed of the Five Khandhas (Five Aggregates: they are Matter (rupa); Feeling (vedana); Perception(sanna); 4. Mental-activities (sankhara); and Consciousness (vinnana). Some assert that these beings are detached souls or spirits with no material encasement, and some again, that they are possessed of the faculty of seeing like Devas, and further, that they have power of changing at will, at short intervals, from one to any of the existence mentioned above. Others again hold the fantastic and erroneous theory that these beings can, and so, fancy themselves to be in other than the existence they are actually in. Thus, to take for example one such of these suppositious beings. He is a poor person and yet he fancies himself to be rich. He may be in hell and yet he fancies himself to be in the land of the Devas, and so on. This belief in intermediate stages between existences is false, and is condemned in the Buddhist teachings. A human being in this life who, by his Karma is destined to be a human being in the next, will be reborn as such; one who by his Karma is destined to be a Deva in the next will be appear in the land of the Devas; and one whose future life is to be in Hell, will be found in one of the regions of hell in the next existence. The idea of an entity or soul or spirit going, coming, changing or transmigrating from one existence to another is an idea entertained by the ignorance and materialistic, and is certainly not justified by the Dhammas that there is no such thing as going, coming, changing, etc., as between existences. The conception, which is in accordance with the Dhamma, may perhaps be illustrated by the picture thrown out by a cinema projector, or the sound of emitted by the gramophone, and their relation to the film or the sound-box and records respectively. For example, a human being dies and is reborn in the land of Devas. Though these two existences are different, yet the link or

continuity between the two at death is unbroken in point of time. The same is true in the case of a man whose further existence is to be in hell. The distance between Hell and the abode of man appears to be great. Yet, in point of time, the continuity of passage from the one existence to the other is unbroken, and no intervening matter or space can interrupt the trend of a mans Karma from the world of human beings to the regions of Hell. The passage from one existence to another is instantaneous, and the transition is infinitely quicker than the blink of an eyelid or a lightening-flash. Karma determines the realm of rebirth and the state of existence in that realm of all transient being (in the cycle of existences, which have to be traversed till the attainment, at last, of Nibbana). The results of Karma are manifold, and may be affected in many ways. Religious offerings (dana) may obtain for a man the privilege of rebirth as a human being, or as a deva, in one of the six deva worlds according to the degree of the merit of the deeds performed, and so with the observance of religious duties (sila). The jhanas or states of absorption, are found in the Brahma world or Brahmalokas up to the summit, the twentieth Brahma world: And so with bad deeds, the perpetrators of which are to be found, grade by grade, down to the lowest depths of Hell. Thus are Karma, past, present and future were, are, and will ever be the sum total of our deeds, good, indifferent or bad. As was seen from the foregoing, our Karma determines the changes of our existences. Evil spirits are, therefore, not beings in an intermediate or transitional stages of existence, but are really very inferior beings, and they belong to one of the following five realms of existence: 1.World of Men: 2.The Lowest plane of deva-world; 3.The region of hell; 4. Animals below men, and 5. Pretas (ghosts). Number 2 and 5 are very near the world of human beings. As their condition is unhappy, and they are popularly considered evil spirits. It is not true that all who die in this world are reborn as evil spirits; nor is it true that beings who die sudden or violent deaths are apt to be reborn in the lowest plane of the world of devas. Question: Is there such a thing as a human being who is reborn and who is able to speak accurately of his or her past existence? Answer:Certainly, this is not an uncommon occurrence, and is in accordance with the tenets of Buddhism in respect to Karma. The following (who form, an overwhelming majority of human beings) are generally unable to remember there past existences when reborn as human beings: Children who die young. Those who die old and senile. Those who are addicted to the drug or drink habit. Those whose mothers, during their conception, have been sickly or have had to toil laboriously, or have been reckless or imprudent during pregnancy. The children in the womb, being stunned and started, lose all knowledge of their past existence. The following are possessed of a knowledge of their past existences, viz: Those who are not reborn (in the human world) but proceed to the world of the devas, of Brahmas, or to the regions of Hell, remember their past existences. Those

who die suddenly deaths from accidents, while in sound health, may also be possessed of this faculty in the next existence, provided that their mothers, in whose womb they are conceived, are healthy. Again, those who live steady, meritorious lives and who in their past existences have striven to attain, often attain it. Lastly the Buddha, the Arahantas and Ariyas attain this gift which is known as pubbenivasa abhnna(Supernatural Power remembering previous existences). Question: Which are the five Abhinna? Are they attainable only by the Buddha? Answer: The five Abhinna (Supernatural Powers): Pali abhi, excellent, nana, wisdom) are: Iddhividha = Creative power; Dibbasola = Divine Ear; Cetopariya nana = Knowledge of others thoughts; Pubbenivasanussati = Knowledge of ones past existence; Dibbacakkhu = The Divine eye. The Abhinna are attainable not only by the Buddha, but also by Arantas and Ariyas, by ordinary mortals who practise according to the Scriptures (as was the case with hermits etc, who flourished before the time of the Buddha and who were able to fly through the air and traverse different worlds). In the Buddhist Scriptures, we find, clearly shown, the means of attaining the five Abhinna. And even nowadays, if these means are carefully and perseveringly pursued, it would be possible to attain these. That we do not see any person endowed with the five Abhinna today is due to the lack of strenuous physical and mental exertion towards their attainment. In the working of Karma there are maleficent and beneficent forces and conditions to counteract and support this self-operating law. Birth (gati) time or condition (kala) substratum of rebirth or showing attachment to rebirth (upadhi) and effort (payoga) act as such powerful aids and hindrances to the fruition of Karma. Though we are neither the absolutely the servants nor the masters of our Karma, it is evident from these counteractive and supportive factors that the fruition of Karma is influenced to some extent by external circumstances, surroundings, personality, individual striving, and so forth. It is this doctrine of Karma that gives consolation, hope, reliance and moral courage to a Buddhist. When the unexpected happens, and he meets with difficulties, failures, and misfortune, the Buddhist realises that he is reaping what he has sown, and he is wiping off a past debt. Instead of resigning himself, leaving everything to Karma, he makes a strenuous effort to pull the weeds and sow useful seeds in their place, for the future is in his own hands. He who believes in Karma does not condemn even the most corrupt, for they, too, have their chance to reform themselves at any moment. Though bound to suffer in woeful states, they have hope of attaining eternal Peace. By their own doings they have created their own Hells, and by their own doings they can create their own Heavens, too. A Buddhist who is fully convinced of the law of Karma does not pray to another to be saved but confidently relies on him for his own emancipation. Instead of making any Karma 44

self-surrender, or calling on any supernatural agency, he relies on his own will power, and works incessantly for the wellbeing and happiness of all. This belief in Karma validates his effort and kindles his enthusiasm, because it teaches individual responsibility. To the ordinary Buddhist, Karma serves as a deterrent, while to an intellectual, it serves as in incentive to do good. He or she becomes kind, tolerant, and considerate. This law of Karma explains the problem of suffering, the mastery of so-called fate and predestination of other religions and about all the inequality of mankind. o Children Seizures to your children -Artisam to your children - Like to have new baby - No children Frequent abortions -Miscarriage - Drinks, Sexual & Drugs Addiction of your children. A native will beget children if the 5th is owned by a benefic or a benefic is standing in 5th or the 5th is aspected by a benefic. If the 5th is owned by a malefic and occupied/aspected by another malefic, the native will have no children. If the 5th from Asdt or Moon (whichever is stronger) happens to be owned by a benefic and if one of the shad vargas (viz classifications) of the 5th bhava madhya happens to belong to Jupiter or the 5th is aspected by a benefic, the native shall have a son without fail through his married wife. Number of sons will equal the number of navamsas covered by the lord of 5th. Of these navamsas, number of children equalling the number of navamsas which have fallen in benefic signs or which have benefic aspect/connection, will prosper; and number of children equaling the number of malefic navamsas or navamsas with malefic aspect/connection will not thrive. A benefic navamsa with strong benefic aspect will give double the results. Aspect to a navamsa is called for here. This requirement will be satisfied if the zodiac sign in which the navamsa falls is aspected by a planet. Masculine navamsas represent boys and feminine navamsas, girls. If lord of 5th is suffering debilitation, combustion or stay in bitter enemy house, even if having benefic connection, there may be no issues.

If the 5th house happens to be Capricorn or Aquarius or the 5th bhava madhya falls in a varga of Saturn, aspected by Mercury, and not aspected by Sun/Mars/Jupiter, the native will have a son born to his wife, out of wedlock, known as KSHETRAJA. Same result will occur if 5th bhava falls in a Mercurian sign/varga, aspected by Saturn, and not aspected by Sun, Mars or Jupiter. In SARAVALI text circulating in Andhra, this sloka has been interpreted thus If the GANA ruled by Saturn in the 5th house is aspected by Mercury, not aspected by Sun, Mars or Jupiter, the native will have kshetraja. In this context, GANA means a varga (classification viz. Rasi, Hora, Drekkana, Saptamsa, Navamsa, Dwadasamsa and Trimsamsa). According to this interpretation, one of the seven classifications may be that of Saturn, aspected by Mercury or vice versa. Here, the aspecting planet has also got to be in the same varga. Assuming 5th is Capricorn or Aquarius, Mercurys full aspect is enough. Assuming 5th bhava madhya falls at 15 Libra, the 5th bhava madhya is in 2nd drekkana ruled by Saturn. In this case, mercury has to be in Aries 2nd drekkana for his full aspect on Saturnian GANA. From the context and general build of the sloka, both the interpretations seem to be correct. In the former, the yoga will apply only if the 5th falls in a Saturnian/Mercurian sign whilst in the latter, the yoga may arise in any sign subject to the varga being that of Saturn or Mercury. The scope is enlarged in the latter. If Capricorn or Aquarius becomes the 5th and if Saturn is standing there with aspect of Moon, the native will have an adopted son. Aspect of Mercury in place of Moon indicates a KREETA PUTRA. This is how the sloka has been interpreted in Andhra texts. There is a difference of opinion amongst the South Indian savants with regard to the interpretation of that part of the sloka, pertaining to KREETA PUTRA. According to this opinion, the 5th house should fall in a Mercurian sign with Mercury posited in there and aspected by Moon. Kreeta Putra is said to be a child whose worthiness to be adopted is NOT considered, but is purchased for cash. From the context and general build of the sloka, the translators prefer the first opinion.

If the Saptamsa of the 5th happens to be owned by Mars whilst Saturn is positioed in 5th, without aspect or conjunction, the native will possess a KRITRIMA PUTRA. this interpretation is based on Andhra texts. Incidentally, Saptamsa is given importance here. This is in keeping with Maharshi Parashara Immortal Astrological Classic BRIHAT PARASHARA HORA wherein he advocates use of Saptamsa Chakra for predictions concerning issues. This sloka has been interpreted differently in South Indian vernacular texts thus : If the 7th house falls in Aries/Scorpio whilst Saturn is standing therein without any aspect, the native will have KRITRIMA PUTRA. The first interpretation is based on the use of words SAPTAMA BHAGA in the sloka, whilst the 2nd interpretation is based on the words SAPTAMA BHAVA in the said sloka. The translators support the first interpretation without any hesitation. KRITRIMA PUTRA is one who has all the features and qualities befitting the parents, but who is not actually adopted but taken in, out of love, as their son. If one of the vargas of the 5th house belong to Sun and Sun stands in that varga aspected by Mars, the native will have a BIJA PUTRA (a son born to native through a woman belonging to a low community, not married by him). Example : If Sun is standing in Leo or own Hora/drekkana/saptamsa/ navamsa/dwadasamsa and is aspected by Mars, the yoga arises. Mars should be occupying the same number of varga as that of Sun. If Sun is in 2nd drekkana, Mars should also be in 2nd drekkana; if Sun is in 5th navamsa, Mars should also be in 5th navamsa and so on. South Indian texts interpret this sloka to mean thus : If the 5th happens to be Leo with Sun posited in there, aspected by Mars, the native will beget a child known as BIJA PUTRA. If Moon is standing in a martian sign, which happens to be the 5th with aspect of Saturn, and without any other aspect, the native will possess a GOODHOTPANNA (son born to his wife due to her intimacy with someone). This sloka is by KARUNA MUNI. The Andhra interpretation for this sloka is If Moon in 5th occupies a Martian Navamsa and is aspected by Saturn, the native will beget a Goodhotpanna. Hindi texts interpret this sloka as If Moon is in 5th in Martian Navamsa aspected by Saturn, without aspect of any benefic, the son will be a fool and of a low type. Mars in 5th (which happens to be Capricorn/Aquarius) if aspected by Sun, the native will have an APAVIDHA PUTRA (one who is forsaken by parents). This sloka is by KARUNA MUNI. If Moon is conjunct with Saturn and both of them occupy Capricorn/Aquarius, which happens to be the 5th or Moon occupies one of Saturns vargas in the 5th aspected by Sun and Venus, the native will have a PUNARBHAVA
Karma 46

PUTRA (one born to a woman who has been forsaken or divorced by her husband and out of wedlock). The South Indian interpretation for this sloka runs thus - Moon standing Saturnian signs/vargas, whilst Saturn in 5th is aspected by both Sun and Venus, the native will beget a Punarbhava Putra. If Moon is very weak in the matter of Rasmies and is with combustion in any sign, whilst the 5th is conjunct or aspected by Sun, the native will have a KANEENA PUTRA (the native marries a woman who already has a son from her previous marriage). If Sun and Moon occupy their vargas in Cancer or Leo, which happen to be the 5th, aspected by Venus, there will birth of a SAHODA PUTRA (one who is aleady in the womb of mother at the time of marriage). Sun and Moon should be in the same sign. The interpretation given for this sloka, which is slightly different compared to Andhra texts, is as follows in malayalam version : if the 5th happens to be Cancer/Leo wherein Sun and Moon are together and aspected by Venus; or Sun and Moon stand on their own vargas in 5th house aspected by Venus, there will be birth of SAHODA PUTRA. If 5th is owned by malefic and is occupied by a malefic (without benefic aspect), there will be no issues. If there is also a benefic aspect, there will be birth of children after necessary propitiatory measures/shantis. If Venus aspects its own navamsa occurring in the 5th house, birth of a son through maid-servant will occur. If Moon is stronger than Ascendant, this yoga may be considered with reference to 5th of Moon sign. If the 5th happens to be Taurus, Libra, or Cancer, Moon and Venus in of these signs, the native will have more of girl children. This yoga occurring in Taurus or Cancer is more powerful. If the 5th, Moon and Venus occupy masculine signs, the native will have a mixture of boys and girl children. Moon in 10th, Venus in 7th and a malefic in 4th indicate that the native will have no issues and that the natives dynasty will cease with him. Mars in 5th, either as lord of Asendent or lord of 5th indicates birth of some children. If such Mars is conjunct or aspected by Jupiter, the first born will die. If there is aspect of Venus or other planets, same results should NOT be predicted. Mars in 5th indicates loss of all children born. If all the 3 malefics are in 5th, it denotes that the native will have no happiness and will have few relatives. Mars alone in 5th indicates defect in any organ. Saturn alone in 5th indicates diseases. Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in 5th indicates growth of everything the 5th signifies viz. happiness, prosperity and finance.

Chandra Nakshatra Lord of Girl is the Moon, Nakshatra Lord of the Boy is Saturn. Saturn is inimical to the Moon. Ashtakoota compatibility points between the Girl and the Boy are 26 out of 36 which is Good. 7th Lord of Girl is Jupiter afflicted in close conjunction with Rahu (Guru Chandal Yoga) in the 10th house. It is the 7th Lord (Marriage) placed in the adverse and evil 8th house in the Navamsa in Debilitation. This is a very adverse sign for marriage and the Spouse in General. Jupiter is the Sthira Karaka of the husband in a womans chart. The affliction of Jupiter in the Rasi and the Navamsa is not positive for married life. 7th lord of Boy is Mercury placed in the 9th which is auspicious but not quite as it also houses Gulika. In the Navamsa, the 7th lord of the boy is Mars placed in the 6th House whos dispositor is Venus which is afflicted by virtue of its placement and being Lagnesh. Venus is also the Chara Atma Karaka of the boy. Such individuals have to learn to control their passion and sexuality in this life. The AK in the 8th House is not a positive placement in terms of Marriage, being Venus the Karaka for married life and spouse. 7th House from Chandra of the Girl is afflicted by a Retrograde Saturn in Scorpio aspected by Mars and Rahu. This is again indicative of inharmony and adversity in Married life. Upapada Lagna This Lagna shows the actual Spouse. UL for the girl is in the 8th House. Upapada Lagna in the 8th house is indicative of Dushta Karma from past lives related to Marriage. It is not positive. Lord of the Upapada Lagna is a Retrograde Saturn placed in enemical Scorpio in the 6th House. Saturn is also the 8th Lord and the Second Lord from the Upapada Lagna which shows sustenance of Marriage. It is aspected by Rahu and Mars. This again is not a positive omen for the marriage partner. UL for the Boy is in the 9th house in Leo which has Venus, Sun and Mercury. It shows a bright and elegant wife. The second from UL is aspected by Rahu which shows a sudden end to the first serious relationship or Marriage the boy goes through. The Upapada Lagna is placed in the 12th from Arudha Lagna. The 2/12 axis is not favorable for compatibility between the partners. It shows that he may reject the spouse and not be emotionally or physically in harmony with her need for affection and attention.

Position of Venus Karaka for Marriage and Spouse. Venus in

the girls chart is Exalted in Pisces in the 10th house but afflicted as it is Conjunct the same Degree as Rahu. Venus conjunct Rahu tends to spoil the Karakatwa of Venus and makes the native prone to illicit relationships and extra-marital affairs. Venus is placed in the 7th house in Navamsa which is also the 12th lord. It is not the best placement. Venus in the Boys chart is placed in the 9th house in Inimical Sign Leo with Gulika, the poisonous son of Saturn. In the Navamsa, Venus is placed in the evil 8th House which is also the lord of the 6th House. This shows distress and strife in marriage. 7th Lord from Venus is Mercury placed in the 2nd from it for the girl Its fine. Kendra and Trikona placements are better. 7th House from Venus has Ketu. This is an affliction. It is also aspected by Rahu which is a Malefic. Tithi Lord of Girl is Mercury is placed in the 2nd from Venus. Tithi Lord of the Boy is Jupiter placed in the 5th from Venus. There is no affliction.

Dosha:- Girl has Mars in the 12th and Boy has Mars in the 12th too. They are both Manglik. Two people who are Manglik in Marriage cancels the Dosha. However, it is recommended for your daughter to get married after the age of 28 to avoid any complications. Mars reduces its Martian Energy at this age. Conclusion:I would not recommend this couple to get married based on the 10 Factor analysis above. It will not last according to my knowledge and experience. MARRIAGE COMPATIBILITY FACTORS IN ATHARVA VEDIC ASTROLOGY We all have a relationship that works for us. Whatever you need from a relationship, there is someone out there, who can fulfil

your needs. There is never complete compatibility as there are always some aspects of the relationship a couple needs to work out. If there were no issues to work out, then why would two souls come together. The trick in finding your best relationship is to look beyond the mere physical attraction and take all the issues you deal with to the spiritual evolution of your relationship. Vedic Astrology pays great importance to relationships especially marriage and there are many techniques for compatibility. Traditionally in India, the parents arranged marriages. One of the most important factors which, helped in making the marriages successful was the comparing of the birth charts of couple by the family astrologer. Marriage could only go ahead after the astrologers was satisfied with the compatibility and could let the parents know that there couple would be happy together. This practice of matching of charts is still very prevalent in India. The Kuta system has a complicated set of rules that matches the charts on sexual, spiritual and emotional level. It has twelve points of matching between two charts. The birth chart gives clues to every aspect of compatibility between the couple. In the West, we seldom look at a birth chart of a person we are falling in love with. Compatibility is usually looked at later stages of the relationships. The Kutas can become a guide to develop the relationship further. Do not worry if you have a low score on the Kutas. Often low scoring relationships can last longer than the high scoring ones as there is karma to be worked out. The essence of compatibility is how it works under pressure. We can love well in perfect conditions but when we face challenges our compatibility ratio comes into play. Good compatibility usually gives happiness. The length of relationship has usually nothing to do with compatibility. Many people choose to live in an unhappy relationship, knowing they have nothing in common.

modern relationship and the honouring of the female instinct by both men and women would go a long way to providing happiness.

Karma and Relationships

Getting to know about the law of karma is the key to understanding Vedic relationships. The word karma literally means action. Every action we take in this life, our past and future lives is our karma. We choose the fruits of our previous karma that we are going to face in this life, both the negative and the positive. The law of Karma says that the ultimate responsibility for our life and happiness rests with us. We cannot blame anyone else for what we are experiencing today. Our actions past and present create situations that we have to face through the journey of our life. When we relate to our karma, we realise that this birth is only a small part of the whole, because this life is only one of a multitude of lives. The whole is like a necklace. Each lifetime is one pearl but all the pearls have to be strung together to make the necklace. In different life times we form contacts and relationships. Some relationships get completed but some remain unfinished. These unfinished relationships form part of our relationship Karma. The soul remembers. When we meet the soul of loved ones from the past, there is an instant connection. How often you have met someone to whom you are instantly attracted.

Rnanu Bandhana or Karmic Ties

Relationships in Mind, Body and Spirit

Relationships and marriages are considered to be a meeting of the mind, body and spirit. A good partnership is good for the soul. A marriage is considered a re-birth where two individual personalities merge into one. The relationship then has a life of its own; two souls are tied together in a spiritual connection. People change their names after marriage regarding it as a rebirth where the couple is dealing with new realities and a new life together. The Importance of the Womans Happiness Vedic compatibility is always done from the womans point of view. Indians believe that for a long and happy marriage or relationship, the nurturing of the woman is very important as she forms the strength in a relationship. She is Shakti or the divine female power. Traditionally women were honoured and looked after to ensure their happiness. In modern context, it is the dissatisfaction of the women in relationships that is leading to the disruption of many relationships. The modern man should honour his woman as a wife, mother and lover. The women in the 21st century are much more dynamic than their traditional counterparts. But some of this ancient wisdom applied to the Karma 48

Rnanu means debt and Bandhana means ties. This word is usually used for karmic ties that hold us together. Only those ties have an impact on this life which have some debts- in this case the word debt is meant as unfinished business. Before the soul is born it makes a decision on what relationships are going to mature in this lifetime and with whom it is going to pay off its karmic debts. At the time of birth, when the umbilical cord is cut, the mind forgets this but retains it in the subconscious. When we meet someone with whom we have a rnanu bandhana to work out, the inter-action begins immediately. But with those who you have completed your karma- there is an instant recognition but nothing develops from it. It is important to let go of these relationships. They create unnecessary confusion emotionally. Also some relationships are not matured, the time to pay off that debt has not arrived as yet. Again those relationships do not develop. What type of relationship you experience depends on the karmic equation? When you fall in love, how this relationship works out depends on what your mutual rnanu bandhana is. If you have greater debts to pay, you will be the one who is putting more into the relationship. Sometimes you are stuck in a very onesided situation and wonder why you are still in. In an unfinished relationship of past life where you were the taker, when your souls meet again you need to balance this equation, so this time around it is you who become the giver or vice versa. In sexual relationships also the concept of rnanu bandhana is important. If you are in a relationship and your sexual relationship suddenly stops or the sexual attraction suddenly

dies. The karma of sex may have been completed. Or you have a purely sexual relationship- then you had already worked out the other aspects of the relationship.

The Quality of the Moon

Similarly Jupiter as the significator of Men in a womens chart gives indication of the type of husband/partner you are going to get. A debilitated Jupiter does not suggest lack of partner, but the type of partner who may be restricted in this life by Saturnian consideration.

Moon as the significator of the mind, is the most important planet to study when you are trying to work with compatibility. If all other factors are good but the Moon is in an unhappy position in your chart or placed with difficult planets, then there will be issues within relationships. The Moon plays an important part in our hidden emotions, happiness and desires. As a planet which shows your relationship with your mother- it indicates the love or lack of it in your childhood. Many emotional problems are related to childhood. If the Moon is with malefic or afflicted, it shows a person trying to work with their inner issues and it can create challenges or difficulties in trying to relate to others. A Moon which is hemmed in by Saturn and Rahu will have more problems to deal with emotionally and this will create difficulty in relating to a person regardless of the quality of the 7th house, Venus, Jupiter etc.

The 7th House and the 7th house ruler

Any planet, benefic or malefic are not good in the 7th house. Sun creates too much fire, Mars- passion, anger, Moon- emotions, Saturn- detachment, Rahu- dissatisfaction, Ketu- loss or rejection, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter give multiple relationships. Here you have to look at this aspect from a more western point of view. Most of us have relationships before we settle down to a commitment . More than one relationship indicated in your chart may not be a negative factor for you. 7th house ruler and its placement with the malefics Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu and Ketu can create challenges within your relationships.

Mars and Relationships

Opposites Attract

Those who express the opposite energy of your Lagna, Sun or Moon signs can be good partners and lead to a satisfying relationship. If your ascendant is opposite to your partners Ascendant, then it is considered a very good compatibility as they would be your natural partners. For Example, a Gemini Ascendant male and Sagittarius ascendant female or vice versa would be considered the ideal partners. If her Moon sign is his Sun Sign. If you have a Leo Moon, you would be attractive to a person who has a Leo Sun. Her Moon sign is opposite his Sun sign. An Aries Moon will be compatible with Libra Sun.

Karakas or significator of Relationships

Karakas or significators play an important part in looking at relationships. Jupiter is the Karaka for men in a womans chart and Venus, the karaka for women in a mans chart. Venus is also the karaka of relationships. The position or dignity of these two planets becomes very important in understanding what kind of relationships you are likely to have. These planets are studied on their own as well as the 7th house in relation to Venus in your birth chart. As Venus signifies relationships, the 7th house from Venus will give you further insight e.g. if your Venus is in Taurus, Scorpio as the 7th house from Taurus will be studied as a secondary house for relationships. Conjunctions or placement of these planets will give you further clues to your relationships. An exalted Venus indicates your ability to have a long term relationship. If Venus is conjunct Saturn, there may be a delay in relationships. Any Conjunctions with Rahu Ketu add a shadowy aspect to your relationship. It can also indicate involvement in unconventional relationships. If Venus or Jupiter are placed in one of the dusthana houses (6th, 8th or 12th) , then the quality of relationship can suffer.

Mars can spoil marital happiness. Indian Sages believed that Mars passion created disharmony in long term happiness of a relationship unless it was matched by a partner with equally strong nature. Mars placed in the 1st, 4th , 7th, 8th and 12th house was usually considered to create problems in relationship which can lead to sudden or unexpected endings. This is known as Kuja Dosha . But as you see it indicates most of Mars positions as negative for relationship. But this dosha has been wrongly understood. The reason for pointing out these positions as difficult so that a good astrologer would match this chart with a partner who had similar desires/ strengths. Mars is a planet of action, power, militancy, war, passion, strong sexuality and it needs a partner who can deal with these powerful energies. Kuja dosha becomes a problem if you meet up with a partner who is soft and timid and can become a victim. Here it is important to remember in India divorce is not common. Partners marry for life. So if a person had strong sexual needs then they needed a partner who could fulfil them. Also if one partner is too powerful and can intimidate the other, there can be victimisation in relationships. Otherwise, there would be much unhappiness.

Raaghu Kethu Create Shadows

Any conjunction with Raaghu Kethu with the 7th house ruler, Jupiter or Venus and their placement in the 1st, 7th house axis create shadowy challenges within relationships. Raaghu Kethu in the 1st 7th axis churn up the issues related to yourself and partnerships. As they work on the psychological level, the nodes can create obstacles in your mind. Raaghu in the 7th usually makes you dissatisfied with your relationships. It can lead to multiple relationships. Kethu in the 7th will create a feeling of rejection. You may reject relationships or get involved in relationships which reject you. Kethu conjunct Venus specially indicates you are working out some past life issues through your marriage or relationships. For men, it can mean women who bring some personal baggage into your relationship. Any conjunctions of Jupiter with the nodal axis will create some kind of difficulty within the relationship. Raaghu signifies foreigners, so it could also indicate a attraction to those who are foreign to you.

y the greatest divine blessings of the Almighty and Swamiji I had the gift of discussing about the Spirituality of Veda, Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and many spiritual leaders. In this issue also they have blessed me with a gift of discussing spirituality. In this issue I try to give my ideas on Spirituality and religion. Religion is a path to God. Spirituality is also a path to God. However they have differences in approach. According to the Vedas, the essence of religion is Fear God and obey God. The quintessence of spirituality is Love God, humanity and become another God. There are many steps in practicing spirituality. The steps are as follows. Past vs. Present: Religion tends to take great inspiration from the past. It reveres the ancient religious texts, as the way to achieve salvation. Spirituality is not so concerned with the past. Spirituality believes in the eternal now. To attain liberation and to be a good human being we need to live in the present. It is not the past or the future that gives us liberation. We achieve peace of mind only when we concentrate on doing the right things here and now. Fear vs. Love: Quite often religion takes the approach of fearing God. Religion is a reminder to do the right things. So nobody will suffer in the future. The spiritual approach to God is through the path of love. Spirituality teaches us not to fear God, but approach him through the path of love. Where is God? Often religion talks of God as being high in the heavens. At times God can seem far from the reach of aspiring humanity. Spirituality shows us that God is omniscient and omnipresent and can be felt as a living presence in our own heart. Furthermore not only is God reachable but we can attain the inner realization of God. Universality: Many followers of religion feel that only their path can lead to salvation. They have tremendous faith in their own religion, but at the same time they feel other religions are wrong and cannot lead a seeker to God. Spirituality feels that all religions are valid. Spirituality knows there are many paths to the same goal. Spirituality embraces all the world religions, but at the same time, is not constrained by any religious forms. Outer worship vs. Inner Worship: Religion places great emphasis on outer forms and outer rituals. These are helpful for giving a sense of formality to the worship of God. But spirituality is not concerned with outer rituals. Spirituality says that what is important is a seekers inner attitude. Through practicing spirituality, we can develop an inner shrine in our own heart. The great sage Thirumoolar has dealt a lot in these subjects. There are many evidences and examples for the inner Karma 50

worship. The very practical example is a great saint named Poosalar Nayanar from the southern part of India. Religion and spirituality have their differences but at the same time they can embrace each other. Through following their religion great saints have attained the fruits and realizations of a mystical approach to God. This includes Christian mystics, Muslim mystics and Sufi Saints. In fact each religion has produced spiritual seekers of the highest order. Outer peace is a mutual compromise. Two individuals or two nations find no better way to bring about some harmony; therefore, they resort to compromise. There is no inner satisfaction here, but just because the two individuals or two nations have to stay together on earth, they feel that there is no other way if they have to live on earth, then they have to resort to compromise. But inner joy, inner satisfaction, inner peace remain a far cry. Inner peace is mutual sacrifice. This sacrifice is founded upon conscious awareness of ones reality. In this sacrifice, the one finds fulfillment in the many, and the many find fulfillment in the one. On the strength of their inner oneness, two individuals on the outer plane make a sacrifice. But when they dive deep within, they feel that there is no such thing as sacrifice. It is the supreme necessity in both of them to please, satisfy and fulfill each other. The Upanishads have dealt a lot in this subject. Outer joy is nothing more than pleasure, pleasurelife. This pleasure-life is followed by depression and frustrationlife; and what looms large in depression and frustration will lead to destruction. Inner joy is spontaneous satisfaction. This satisfaction we discover in the heart of universal oneness. In order to have inner joy we have to give up the desire-life and enter into the domain of aspiration-life. Only in aspiration-life can we discover the heart of universal oneness. For this inner joy I wish to tell a small example. We meet many poor people in our routine life. Normally we give some money to them and we leave. But if on any day, if we offer him some food and the poor gets satisfied, we can feel a greatness, well and happiness in the mind. None of us will worry about the expenses. This is called as inner joy. Outer faith is nothing more than a rope of sand; it crumbles in the twinkling of an eye. With outer faith we cannot sing the everlasting song of the Absolute Supreme. Only in everlasting things can the Absolute Supreme sing His transcendental, universal Song. Inner faith is our divine conviction. Inner faith makes us realize that we are of God, that we have a Source and our Source is God. Inner faith also makes us realize that we are in God and we are for God. When we discover that we are of God and we feel that our life has meaning. Our life has made a promise to God,

Karma 51

and our human life, both individual and collective, must fulfill that promise. What is that promise? That promise is to manifest spirituality in this earth and make each and every human being as a Godly human being. We are in God. What does this mean? It means that we have accepted Gods cosmic Leela, His divine Game. We want to participate in His cosmic Game. God the eternal Player invites us and inspires us to participate in His cosmic Game and we want to play in the Game. While playing the game we will enjoy peace, bliss and satisfaction in boundless measure. We are for God. What does this mean? It means that we have become supremely chosen instruments of God and He is manifesting Himself in an unprecedented manner in and through us. He is manifesting His Divinity, His Eternity, His Infinity and His Reality in and through us on earth. Each human has three natures: the animal, the human and the divine. The animal in us is nothing short of immediate destruction. The human in us is give and take, or possess and be possessed. The divine in us is self-giving, and self-giving eventually is transformed into God-becoming. The divine in us grows glows and flows. When it grows, it grows into the transcendental consciousness, the transcendental height. When it glows, it covers the length and breadth of the world and finds its existence in the entire universe. When it flows, it flows in Eternity. At that time, Eternity and the divine Love flow together. How we can make the divine glow? Only by practicing the spiritual life one can make the divine glow. There are many things as the base of the spiritual living. They are Transformation, Service and Love. Transformation: What is transformation? Transformation is the unlearning of the things that ignorance has taught us. This ignorance had a favorite student. That student is the physical mind, not the higher mind or the illumined mind. The gross physical mind has taught us quite a few things which we now want to unlearn. The sooner we can unlearn the teachings of ignorance, the sooner our transformation, the transformation of our entire being, will take place. Service: Whom do we serve? We do not serve the human in others or the human in ourselves. We serve the divine in others, the Supreme in others. And the Supreme in others is the same Supreme who abides in us. When we serve the Supreme in others consciously, soulfully, devotedly and unconditionally, we feel a kind of expansion. In this expansion we feel that we are no longer just for ourselves, but for all. United we are singing, playing and dancing in Gods Garden. The human in us does not use the term service; it immediately uses the term help. But when the human in us thinks that it is offering help, the divine in us knows that this is a mistake. The divine in us serves the Supreme, the Absolute Supreme. The Absolute Supreme does not need help. He has and He is everything. He is Infinity, He is Eternity, and He is Immortality. But when we serve Him, our humility grows, our spontaneous Karma 52

divinity grows. We feel that we are tiny drops in the ocean, insignificant, infinitesimal drops. But when the drops enter into the ocean, when even the tiniest possible drops lose their personality and individuality, they become the infinite ocean itself. So it is through our service, devoted service that we consciously grow into the Vast, into Infinitys Light and Delight. Love: Why do we love? We love because of our Source, who created us, has taught us one supremely significant thing: love. This is what He has taught the soul in us, and the soul in us tries to bring this teaching always to the fore. The Supreme is the only teacher and He teaches only one subject, and that subject is love. He has infinite Love and He is infinite Love. Just because He is all Love, eternal Love, He is our dearest, He is our sweetest, and He is our All. And because we want to love Him for the sake of love alone, without asking Him for any recompense, He feels that we are His chosen instruments. Love is the greatest power, the most powerful power in us. But it is divine love that is most powerful, not human love. When a seeker enters into the spiritual life, he feels within and without a flood of love. And when he feels this love, he consciously tries to dedicate himself to the Source. He sees and feels that he is becoming consciously and constantly the perfect embodiment of God the eternal Truth, and God the eternal Light. Each individual seeker is Gods conscious representative on earth. A seeker is he who knows that ignorance-life is not the answer. Aspiration-life, which is the life of love divine-love of God, love of truth, love of light- can be the only answer. A seeker may not be consciously aware that he is infinitely higher than those who are un aspiring. Even if he is aware of what he is and who he is, he may not fully manifest what he has and what he is within. For the manifestation of his inner divinity, he has to aspire, constantly aspire, and become the ceaseless, ever-mounting flame. Right now the flame is within him, but there shall come a time when he shall grow into the flame itself. Once the seeker becomes the burning, glowing and illumining flame, the Absolute Supreme manifests Himself in and through this ever-mounting flame. In this ever-mounting flame the seeker discovers not only his self-transcendence but also Gods Self-transcendence. He and his eternal Beloved together are transcending, constantly transcending the height of Eternitys experience and Eternitys realization. By practicing the spiritual life one can lead a comfortable living. As Swamiji Sri Selvam used to say You live according to your thoughts. If the thoughts are high one can lead the highest style of comfortable living. If the thoughts are not spiritual and if the thoughts are negative, it is definite that the life will be the most down trodden one. To avoid the down trodden life and to get a comfortable living one should practice spirituality in the life. I thank the Almighty and Swamiji for blessing me with a chance to discuss Spirituality.

many blessings as well as its stressful desires. Jupiter in Pisces increases the qualities of Pisces; such as compassion, sensitivity, pilgrimages and foreign travel. Jupiter will give benefits and challenges in the 10th bhava of career, fame, leadership, authority and government. Jupiter in the 10th will throw its benefits to Cancer in the 2nd of income, speech, family and food. Jupiter will also bring protection to Virgo in the 4th of property, home, mother and vehicles and finally Jupiter will support Scorpio in the 6th of health, employment, pets, service and debts. This is very important because Saturn in Virgo will also influence Scorpio and therefore the double transit of Jupiter and Saturn to Scorpio and the 6th bhava for Gemini will give support and protection to matters of work and health until May 11th. Jupiter will enter Aries May 11, 2011 and remain until May 20, 2012. Jupiter rules growth, optimism, travel and education and Aries rules new beginnings, independence, ambition and courage. Aries rules the 11th bhava for Gemini that is the area of fulfilling ones greatest desires, elder siblings, profits and gains, group activities and special friendships. Jupiter in the 11th will bring expansion, luck and opportunities in these areas. Jupiter from Aries will also throw its benefits to the 3rd of siblings, communications, media and courage and throw its influence onto its opposite sign of Libra in the 5th of children, creativity, luck and romance. Jupiter is a karaka or indicator for children and when its in Aries aspecting the 5th of children could bring many blessings around childbirth but also romance. Jupiter will also throw its good fortune onto the 7th of marriage, partnerships, public recognition and business. Saturn is a powerful malefic but its a functional benefic as it rules the most auspicious 9th bhava of prosperity, travel and higher knowledge and the 8th that is deemed a neutral bhava and the 8th rules change, upheavals, psychology, astrology, research and business deals. Saturn being a natural malefic gives ambition and determination that is good for business affairs but not as good for relationships or health. Saturn entered Virgo September 2009 until November 11, 2011 moving through your 4th bhava giving delays but many responsibilities with home, property, mother or family. Virgo rules the areas of health, work, service and analysis. Fortunately the protection of Jupiter on Saturn will watch over the delays or struggles with the 4th issues but only until May 11, 2011. Expansive Jupiter in Pisces is in opposition to constricted Saturn in Virgo until May 11th that gives protection to Scorpio but will often give opportunities and delays in the areas described above with the bhavas of the 4th of the home and family and the 10th of career and authority. Saturn in Virgo will also bring challenges and lessons to be learned to your 6th of health and work and to the 10th of career, fame and authority. Malefic Ketu has also been transiting the sign of Gemini and your lagna along with malefic Saturn also aspecting your lagna from the end of 2009 through May 2, 2011 when Ketu leaves Gemini. Therefore Saturn and Ketu 2010 through April 2011 could have given problems health, selfconfidence and leadership.

Jupiter is a functional malefic for Gemini according to Parashara as it rules two kendras, the 7th of desiring relationships and the 10th of career and recognition. Jupiter is also the best benefic in the heavens and it is transiting its own sign of Pisces as we entered 2011 through May 11, 2011 allowing Jupiter to give its

Saturn will enter its exalted position Libra for the first time in 30 years November 11, 2011 until November 2014. Saturn will bring important learning lessons of Libra that include relationships, marriage, clients and customers, contracts and business partnerships. But for Gemini Saturn in Libra will also be transiting your 5th bhava of children, speculation, learning, entertainment, sports and creativity. Being exalted in Libra will give many blessings in these areas of Libra and the 5th that will give you determination to work hard and the discipline for education, or having or working with children or creative projects. Saturn from your 5th will also throw its influence to the 7th in Sagittarius of marriage, partnerships, clients and business and the 11th bhava of group activities, financial gains and achievement of desires. Saturn will also bring its influence to the 2nd of income, family, food and speech. Jupiter in Aries in your 11th will be in opposition to Saturn in Libra in the 5th gives opportunities and delays with children, creative projects, achievements and group activities November 11, 2011 through May 20, 2012. But Jupiter in Aries and Saturn in Libra will form a supportive double transit of growth to Sagittarius with your 7th of marriage, partnerships, contracts and clients, public recognition and business. Natural malefic Mars is a functional temporal for Gemini and will be in Leo October 30, 2011 through June 21, 2012 transiting your 3rd bhava of siblings, writing, communications, the fine arts, sports and short trips. Jupiter in Aries will be shining its divine grace and protection onto Mars through May 20, 2012 making sure your 3rd bhava desires can be realized to your benefit; such as with publishing, media, communications, travel and siblings. Rahu in Scorpio and Ketu in Taurus will begin May 2, 2011 until mid January 2013. Rahu will increase your worldly desires to compete and succeed in the material world and Scorpio for Gemini rules the 6th of work, service, health and competition. Ketu seeks the inner spiritual life and tends to detach from the material world. Ketu in Taurus will be in the 12th bhava of spiritual growth, foreign travel and charity. This will be a great deepening of the spiritual life for those ready to take the journey.

Business and Income

2012 will prove to be a good year for you till May 20, 2012 as Jupiter the karaka for expansion, gains and wealth will be in Aries in your second house of wealth and assets. Jupiter is also your 10th lord and Lagnesh. Wearing a Yellow Sapphire will be very beneficial for you if Jupiter is well placed in your birth chart. You will have opportunities for monetary gains during this year. If you are in planning some new projects this year, try to convert your planning into practice. You will reap good results. The time is in your favour so try and work hard and you will get the desired results definitely till May. Your sign lord Jupiter is in your second house creating a good combination for earning wealth and some good occasions of togetherness in family. Throughout this year you may earn lot of money from your business. Those that are in service will get promotions and good increments too. Those wants to change their job have good opportunity to change the job till May. Jupiter will move to the 3rd house of siblings, short travels, communication, effort and initiative in May. The third house transit of Jupiter is not the greatest but its aspect on the 7th house of partnerships, business, marriage; the 9th of fortune, long distance travel, higher education and learning and the 11th house of elder siblings, friends, Income, Gains and fulfillment of hopes and desires is positive. This will however be negated to a great extent because of the overriding factor of the very adverse 8th Saturn transit.

Your family and relatives

There will be very good focus and interaction with your family members. Jupiter will be in the second house of family till the end of May, 2012. RAAGHU & KETHU

H.H. Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar
-Problems with Black Magic - Court Cases - Immigration Problems - Father in Law & Mother in Law & Sister in Law and Brother in Law problems - Sexual Problems - Children problems -Drink & Drugs Problems - Evil Curse & Kala Jadoo Problems -Scary Dreams Problems Raaghu and Kethu are not two separate entities in Vedic Astrology. They are two parts of the same demon, Swarbhanu who was a dragon. The relevant story goes like this. It was desired to bring out the gems lying hidden in the womb of the ocean. The gems were not the precious stones that we often get out of the sea. What is meant here is perhaps the secrets were unknown so far. Incidentally, it may be added here that by water they never meant the compound or two gases. In occult and spiritual literature water is the base of all manifestation. Water is used as a purifying agent in all religions the world over. As the butter in the milk is not visible but can be obtained by churning the milk, the gods and demons representing the good and evil forces wanted to churn the ocean. The work cannot be done by one or a few persons. It was decided to harness all the available forces of the suras ( gods) and Asuras (demons). As the consequence would be precious to both the parties, they decided to work together and share all that came out. Sumeru mountain was selected as the stick for churning. A serpent was used as the cord for the stick. Many gems came out of the sea one by one. Amrita, the nectar that makes one immortal to one who drinks it, was the last to appear. The gods did not want to share this nectar with the demons lest the demons become immortal and evil perpetuate. The demons were already apprehensive of the intentions of gods. The latter approached Lord Vishnu who is always partial to gods. The latter appeared before the quarrelling parties in the form of a charming damsel. The damsel assured justice to both parties and asked them to stand in two rows. Swarbhanu one of the demons, apprehensive of the justice by the damsel infiltrated into the row of gods incognito and got his share of the nectar. It was only after drinking the nectar that he was detected by Sun and Moon who complained about it to Lord Vishnu who got enraged and chopped off the head of the demon. The two portions, head and the headless trunk have since been going round in the zodiac. As Sun and Moon are both their enemies they try to devour them which is the cause of solar and lunar eclipses. Swarbhanu before drinking the nectar had observed great penaces and Tapas and got a boon from Lord Brahma that he would be worshipped along with all the planets. Sun and Moon. It was on account of this boon of Lord Brahma that Lord Vishnu(the damsel) deliberately ignored his infiltration and gave him the nectar. The head portion of the demon is known Raaghu and the trunk as Kethu. On the face it looks funny but an intelligent interpretation of it would lead us to great truth. Gods and demons have always existed side by side, each fearful of the other and each struggling for existence and supremacy over the other. Churning of the ocean for taking out the gems was to have the secrets of life and of the manifestation. The Mt. Sumera is nothing but our spinal cord. The nectar that appeared last of all was nothing but the secrets of life and death and the way to liberation. The serpent used as a rope to bind the mountain is the wise man, perhaps, under whose guidance the operation should be undertaken. In short the churning of the sea is nothing but awakening and activating the Kundalini or Serpent power. The person who detected the demon was Moon who represents an illumined mind. Only and illumined mind can distinguish between good and bad. Head is the governing portion of the entire body and the experiences and the knowledge deposited in the lower portion of the body cannot be utilized by a headless man. In fact knowledge of truth and being one with it are two different things. Even the secret knowledge of truth provides the knower with many Siddhis and accomplishments which may be used as well as misused in the daily affairs of life. Chopping off the head means a separation of the governing part of the body from real truth. The most significant point in the story is that the head comprising the mind and the faculty of distinction and power to govern the body is termed as Raaghu. Because he was a demon his eyes are cast downwards, that is, towards earth or material pursuits. The material pleasures may give short time benefits but in the long run the individual gets disillusioned and starts looking towards the heavens for long term or permanent peace and bliss. As Raaghu has gained the secrets of life and death he becomes invincible. He will try to get what he wants. If the circumstances are conducive or he will manipulate if they are not conductive. In other words, speaking astrologically, Raaghu will get whatever it stands for by hook or by crook. It is compared with Saturn. The discussion on this aspect is possible only after we have learnt more about Raaghu. One thing however is certain. Raaghu in eclipses is active in dark fortnight and Kethu in bright fortnight. It is on this account that Kethu is considered as the Karaka or significator of Moksha or liberation. Both the nodes are malefic because the individuals gets troubles in both the paths whether spiritual or material.

Raaghu and Kethu

Raaghu and Kethu have no house of their owns. They are guided by the lord of the house they occupy. They are also influenced by the planets co-occupying the houses with them and also by those aspecting them. This supports our assumption that the nodes affect more than one aspect of life.
Further, the two nodes are always opposite to each other. Normally the planets opposing each other affect each others results. This may not be so with the nodes because the results in each case may not have to be opposed or affected. If at all, they affect each other that which be only supplementary and not otherwise.

Karma 64

According to mythological tales Raaghu is the head of the dragon. Head as we know contain the brain and controls the functioning of the entire body. This suggests that Raaghu is the controlling and active node. Kethu rules of the body, sends feelings and sensations to the brain. To analyse those sensations and take action if necessary is within the jurisdiction of Raaghu. More precisely Kethu has the power of transforming the events into experience which turn into wisdom. On the basis of the above we can assume that the wisdom derived from events is stored by Kety and may be lying some where at the unconscious level. The wisdom lying at the unconscious may come up to rule conscious or even the conscious level which inspires us to respond involuntarily to some events even knowing fully well that a particularly action shall go against our interests, we take that action. Nobody can predict such action. We may call it mysterious because we do not know the reasons why we took certain action which was not at all warranted under the then prevailing circumstances. This is the bridge linking the fact with the present. Ignoring Raaghu and Kethu we would be missing this link. The sign dispositors of the nodes function as the channels for them. Modern writers have started to link them with our previous incarnations. Kethu stores the past events in its own way and delivers their results through the agency of its sign dispositors and the planets connected with it.

function we have to keep this in mind that Kethu is the repository of our past Karmas or deeds and misdeeds that bring us to this world of matter and manifestation. Astrologically speaking, Kethus Nakshatra fall in the signs Aries Leo and Sagittarius. The indication is that Kethu does whatever it likes on an impulse. It does not analyse its action objectively. It has no tolerance or forbearance. Seeking reasons for such impulsive actions. We go to the study of the rulers of its Nakshatras four quarters. The Nakshatras fall in different signs of the zodiac but their quarters are governed by Mars. Venus, Mercury and Moon. They all belong to the first phase of evolution. Their impact is on subjective mind and they all seek externalization of themselves. Externalisation means an impulse of expressing in physical terms all that they feel inside. The moon as the lord of Cancer governs the cosmic Hiranyagarbha the womb of all manifestation. The egos get all type of nourishment that is required by the ego for all its manoeuvres that it cherished. It is for this reason that Kethu is compared with Mars. Kethu is called Shikhi which means the top. Kethu prepares the individual for each phase of his journey. Preparation for any action requires a conviction that he can do the work required of him. Kethu for this purpose gives flashes of the inner self of the individual which is omnipotent. The aspect of Kethu is present in all its Nakashatras. It tries to take you to spiritualism, the way to the cosmic self. Kethus action is always on the mental plane irrespective of the phase of evolution it is concerned with. In Aries it stimulates the mind because the emerging egos had attained the stage of floating masses. In Pisces they were merely the floating nebulae. In Leo it again stimulated the mind, increased self centered-ness to the degree of being an egoist. It did so because the ego wanted to have more experience the material world. In the last phase of development it stimulated the mind again to take a decision and if need be to change the course of journey. In short, Kethu does not produce the circumstances. It creates the mind. It is the top executive of human actions. It is true that by affecting the mind Kethu causesa great mental turbulence because the matter does not move according to its dictates. This often causes great agonies and even frustrations. Repeated failures and frustrations lead to a situation of helplessness and isolation, then the individual tries to seek remedies and divine help. Kethu does not ask him to withdraw into his shell and that is possible only when we surrender ourselves. Our western friends are of the opinion that Kethu is Mars conjunct Saturn. It cannot be said how this assumption has gained ground . Mars gives up its impulsive nature in the Saturnian sign Capricorn. Esoterically Saturn is considered to be a god of retribution and turning all Karmik accumulation into impersonal universe energy. Karmik retribution is the department under Raaghu as we have seen during our study of Nakshatras. Kethu is not concerned with retribution. Its department is storing of all the deeds or misdeeds in the form or wisdom or experiences. It is difficult to agree with western assumption. The discussion can be summarized briefly.

Kethu

Astrologically speaking, human life has been divided into three stages as Rajasic, Tamasic and Satvic phases. These are also the three Gunas or qualities manifest in this Universe. Kethu is the first Graha in each of these three stages. In Pisces the egos were fast sleep and had lost their individuality. The first step was to awaken the dormant egos. There may be noised around them yet they are not awakened unless called out by name. This is so because the sleeping egos had not lost their individuality. The persons generally identify themselves with the name. They will not easily be awakened by calling out by their names. Kethu as the first Graha required for awakening the ego indicates that it has some thing to do with the activities the sleeping ego had identified itself with. Kethu thus can be taken to be concerned with the life earlier than when the egos went dormant. In other words Kethu implants in the egos their earlier identification. Kethu was the repository of its past deeds in some form or the other. It was however, at mental stage. In the Tamsic phase the individual is ready to face the world manifest physically and mentally. Kethus appearance as first again means that the experiences gained in the earlier life release their talent faculties. Sattwik attributes lead to enlightenment on the basis of its existence in the world of matter. Molla in the group asks individual once again to indentify himself in accordance with his past experience. He may like to go for more experiences of the world of matter or to change the course of piolgirmage to spiritualism. This is one aspect of Kethu that is its contribution to the process of evolution. This is the main function of Kethu and all the others Grahas for that matter. When we talk of astrological

1. Kethu is a Karmic planet in the sense that it is the store house of all our past deeds or misdeeds and ego aspirations and ambitions of the previous incarnations. 2. Kethu does not create circumstances. It is the circumstances which churn the contents of Kethu and become the stimulants to bring out the past relevant experiences etc to the fore to influence the mind. 3. Kethu is like Mars because it works at the spur of the moment. 4. Kethu brings out the specific ray to the fore.

Varuna he looks downward that is, he does not call for the divine assistance but looks for his own faults. In other words the ego again tries to seek the help of its unique ray. It would be clear from the above that Raaghu is not actually the demon but an enlightened demon who is determined to have its divinity back. The sacrifice, however big it may be, is his least concern. Raaghu like Kethu is also a Karmic planet. While Kethu being a store house can be taken as the Karmik (intake) planet and Raaghu the active and distributing. Their effects may be termed as Karmik (distribution). Their sign depositors can also be classified like this. The sign lords of Kethu and Raaghu on the same analogy are termed as Karmic planet (inlet) and Karmik planet (distribution). As regards the houses affected by these Karmic Grahas some eminent astrologers say that z has no aspect while Raaghu aspects Houses 5, 9 and 12th from it. This is perhaps on the basis that the later eminent astrologers have granted them some aspect. Much work on this point has not been done so far. It is therefore, difficult to agree or disagree with these assertions. As these nodes work through the planets related to them either as sign lords or by association or aspects, we have good reason to believe that the planets show the house affected by the nodes. The nodes are always retrograde in motion indicating that they relate to the past rather than the present. On this analogy all the retrograde planets at the time of the birth should be treated as Karmic planets. Much research work is required for this purpose. The sign of the zodiac containing the Nakshatras of Raaghu are all airy signs which have their effects on mind. As Raaghu governs or controls the part that rules over the entire body it does create material condition conductive to the actions it proposes to take by the actions of the individual. The individual behaves in a way that the required material conditions are produced for him to take punishment or reward as the case may be, for its action. Raaghu is compared with Saturn. Saturn is a slow moving planet having many faces (masks) to get its work done ultimately. Raaghu is not slow like Saturn but it does have many masks and it uses them as and when required. Saturn is a non-sparing body and so is Raaghu. Both try to clear off the Karmic impediments that stand in the way of the individual to unite with the original self. They are cruel but their cruelty is for making the individual better. Raaghu like Saturn is considered to be a liar. In fact none of them is a liar. They only keep their cards close to their chest. The individual mis-understands and misinterprets the situation and experiences the untoward results. Diplomacy of Raaghu or Saturn may, however, be taken as their untruthfulness. Raaghu is supposed to be mysterious in action and often treading the unbeaten tracks. This belief also does not carry much of a conviction. Raaghu is a celestial being. Raaghu

It was Kethu that sowed the seed of re-incarnation of the ego. It gave them them wisdom and experience that they had gathered during their last sojourn in the world. It was subjective and purely on mental plane. It was too early to be effective but it was very important because it demarcated the line of action of each ego. By the time Raaghu appeared on the scene various other developments had taken place. Raaghu gave to the egos a human shape. All the organs of sense and action were fully developed. It was a human being with animal instinct. There was need to plant something that was anti animalism. The possibility of any action arises only when there are two aims different from each other. Kethu no doubt gave the flashes of divinity. It was Raaghu which made the ego in human shape realize divinity in him along with animalism but along with the instincts. Raaghu also imparted the knowledge that the divinity in him was only a bounded divinity. It had its own limitation in manifestation. Raaghu is considered as on of the Rudras who know the law of evolution, law of Karmas and law of retribution. It was thus assigned the most important task of enforcement of all the three laws. It is Raaghu only who can suspend the operation of the function of any or all the planets at any particular moment. This does not mean that the achievements of the earlier lives or incarnations are lost to the individual. He will be rewarded or punished as the case may be at some future date. They remain in the personal ledger of the individual. It is the full bloomed flower that is to go on its journey towards his destiny. Swati is the next asterism falling in Libra. The sign belongs to Tamasik Vrittis or the attributes. Under this influence the egos immerse themselves deeper and deeper in matter . Raaghu here arouses deeper wisdom and spirituality and teaches the ego to have a balanced life. Vayu or the wind god by its sieving process shows the distinction between the useful and non useful or real and unreal. The septenary principle starts functioning and the ego pick up its unique thread that it had developed in earlier lives. Raaghu oversees the operations of all three laws, namely, the law of evolution, law or Karma and law of retribution. The third Nakshatra of Raaghu is Satbhishak in Aquarius. Lord of Aquarius is Saturn another Rudra governed by Lord Shiva, the Maha Rudra. Saturnian sign Aquarius teaches the individual that his body etc should be considered merely as a channel for the fulfillment of the Divine will and all that he has achieved should be used for the benefit of the world. Personalism gives way to impersonalism. Varuna the presiding deity over the asterism has the responsibility of purifying the soul and cleaning it by removing all the traces of Avidya i.e. ignorance. In critical times when the individual is unable to bear the sieving action of
