Stephanie Hicklin EDRM 723 Task 2 June 20, 2011 Learning Goals: The learning goals that were

chosen for this task have been developed based on the principle of family-centered services. BabyNet service coordinators facilitate meetings and coordinate services for children birth to three years old who have disabilities or special needs. These services are meant to focus on the family and help to educate and empower families to advocate for and work with their children. Many service providers struggle with focusing on the family and have a tendency to focus on just the child. The following learning goals have been developed to help ensure that providers provide family-centered care for these children and families. Providers will use toys and materials found in the home or community setting. Providers will help families to understand how they can use and adapt toys and materials that are already present in their homes to help their children. Providers will identify activities the child and family like to do which build on their strengths and interests. And finally, providers will assume that the principles of child learning, development, and family functioning apply to all children regardless of disability label. Service Coordination supervisors observe service coordinators during home visits with families on a monthly basis for quality assurance. The following rating scale has been developed for supervisors to use during home visit observations. This rating scale will help to determine how often appropriate family-centered services are provided. Justification: Supervisors will use this rating scale to measure the progress of their staff. They will be able to determine the strengths and weaknesses of their staff. This rating scale will help pinpoint any specific problems. It will also help supervisors determine if any additional training or courses are needed to improve skills. Scenario: Susie, the BabyNet Service Coordinator and her supervisor are going on a regularly scheduled home visit to meet with James, a 2.5 year old child with expressive and receptive language delays. James lives at home with his mother and grandmother. James grandmother cares for him at their home during the week while his mother works. The visit today will be with James and his grandmother. Based on the goals in James IFSP, Susie will be helping grandma refine suggested strategies that will help James to tell caregivers what he wants to drink and eat at snack time today. Susies supervisor will be using the following rating scale to determine how effective Susie is at using the strategies discussed in their most recent online professional development course on family-centered care.
