Are you involved with pressure vessels? If you are, this seminar will be beneficial to you.
Seminar Overview This seminar will address some of the engineering fundamentals for pressure vessel design. The seminar will examine the responsibility of respective parties and the scope and limitations using the ASME Section VIII Div. 1 Code as an example. Subjects reviewed will include material selection, design factors and establishment of allowable stress values, opening reinforcement, flanges and other pressure vessel design considerations. The seminar will also address ASME Section VIII Div. 2 including the basis of the Division and its use in Alberta. The seminar will include a review of common problems and deficiencies to allow participants to gain a better understanding of pressure vessel technology. ASME Section VIII and other codes and standards will be used as examples when some of these topic areas are reviewed. However, this is not a seminar on design codes and standards; and not a seminar on the ASME Section VIII Code.

Who should attend? Anyone who works with pressure vessels in any way or form, including personnel involved with the specification, design, fabrication, inspection, procurement, operation and maintenance of pressure vessels. Some basic knowledge of pressure vessel design and fabrication, while desirable, is not required. What will you learn? At the conclusion of the course, the attendees will have an understanding of the: Safety Codes Act and Pressure Equipment Safety Regulations as it pertains to pressure vessel design Design Consideration along with Common Sense Pressure Equipment Standards for New Construction Safety Factor and Design Factor Brief Review of ASME Section VIII Division 1, 2, 3 Weld Joints and Quality Welds Reinforcement of Openings Flanges and Flange Design

Training Materials and Delivery The seminar will consist of a lecture supported by a slide presentation and reference study materials. Two dates in 2011 have been scheduled for this seminar. The number of participants is limited to 25 to assure proper attention to each attendee. The training is delivered by Dr. Ken Lau.

Instructors Dr. Ken Lau, Ph.D., P.Eng. Chief Inspector & Administrator Dr. Ken Lau has 40+ years experience in pressure equipment including research, construction, operation and standards development. A mechanical engineering graduate from Hong Kong in 1966, Dr. Lau obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of Manchester through research in pressure vessel design and stress analysis. In Alberta, he worked in the pressure equipment fabrication and petrochemical industries before joining Alberta Boilers Branch where he became Assistant Chief Inspector in 1982 and was appointed Chief Inspector in 1990. Since the formation of ABSA, the Pressure Equipment Safety Authority in 1995, Dr. Lau has been the Administrator for pressure equipment safety in Alberta and Chief Inspector of ABSA. Dr. Lau was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta where he taught Master s degree courses in mechanical engineering. Dr. Lau is a member of various professional, jurisdictional and learned organizations including APEGGA, National Board, I.Mech.E. and ASME. He has been very active in standards development serving in CSA B51, B52, B339, B340, B620 and Z662 Technical Committees. He is also a member of eight ASME Committees including B&PV Code Section VIII, B&PV Accreditation and ASME QAI-1. In 2004, Dr. Lau received the CSA Award of Merit in recognition of his outstanding leadership and expertise in the advancement of pressure equipment standards . In 2005, he was elected a Fellow of the ASME in recognition of his exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession . In 2009, he was awarded the National Board Safety Medal, the highest honour bestowed by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, becoming the 21st recipient of the Medal in the 90-year history of the pressure equipment jurisdictional organization. Dr. Lau presents the Pressure Vessel Design seminar.
