Poetry by stonemason engraved into plaques

The poems, written by the late Skylark Durston, were carved in large plaques of Portland stone by Weymouth College stonemasonry student Ian Chalmers and laid in walls next to the Old Engine Shed at East Weares.

POETRY celebrating the glory days of quarrying, penned by a former Portland stonemason, has been engraved and laid into dry-stone walls on the island.

Dorchester Reporter was hellish for the majority of Dorset inhabitants. Common land was being taken by unscrupulous landlords, there were riots in Beaminster in 1764. This discontent rumbled on in Dorset until things came to a head in the 1830s. Joining Mr Sartin as speakers for the event will be local historian Mark Vine who will be discussing Weymouths Crabchurch Conspiracy and former editor of The Landworker Mike Pentelow, who will focus on Peoples Pubs, the Swing Riots and The Luddites.

CHICKERELL: The gardens of The Elms and Stable Cottage in East Street will be open to the public from 2.30pm to 5pm on Sunday. Cream teas and other refreshments will be available and entry to the gardens costs 1.50 with accompanied primary school age children free. COUNTY: Two children were rescued after being swept out to sea. They were found clinging to a buoy near Mudeford Quay on Sunday afternoon. They were recovered by an RNLI inshore lifeboat and a crew from Southbourne coastguard. The children were checked over by an ambulance crew once ashore and required.

COUNTY: Crews from Portland coastguard assisted in the rescue of a broken down fishing boat. The vessel Baja broke down near Bournemouth Pier on Sunday afternoon. It was helped by the motor vessel Scarlet and towed into Poole Harbour.
