large, message center at your service. You can either hang the door on the wall, stand it against the wall or attach some feet to it for a freestanding message center. Old doors make great desks. Take a door, remove the hardware, paint or refinish it if desired, add four legs, trim it out and youve got a great desk. Use the doorknob hole for a cup or cord holder. Door has panes of glass? No problem. Slide some photos or postcards onto the glass panes for decoration and lay a large piece of glass on top of the door to create a solid surface for working. You can also turn an old door into an instant table using the same process. Just cut the door down to the size you need, paint or refinish it if desired, add some legs and trim, and youve got a great side table, sofa table and more. Want a dining table? Use two doors side by side. Old doors make great additions to gardens as well, either as screens, shutters or potting benches. To turn an old door into a potting bench, turn it on its side and add some legs, or make it freestanding with feet and use it as a backdrop to a real potting bench. There are dozens of new uses for old doors. Head to your local hardware store or garden center for ideas. Consult some home magazines and the Internet for further ideas. Get creative and design your own project. Then post it online and share it with others!

will complement all of the features of your home. Consider your own preferences Study your preferences. Do you want your home to stand out or blend in? Do you have a color in mind for your homes exterior that you cant live without? Its your home, so choose a siding color you can live with for years to come. If you want your home to stand out and complement your rose beds, go ahead and choose the rosy pink siding. If you want your home to blend in and complement your red brick, choose the reddish-brown siding. If you cannot bear the thought of your home being any color but yellow, then go ahead and choose the buttercup yellow siding. Consider the limitations of vinyl While vinyl siding does last, it will fade over time. Understand that the siding color you select today may not be the same color years from now. That deep blue could be a much softer blue 10 years from now and a really pale blue 30 years from. Try to choose a siding color that will fade less or you can live with as it fades. Selecting the color of vinyl siding takes time. Dont rush it. Study the color choices carefully, select the ones that appeal to you most and start narrowing down the options based upon the criteria above. When you have three or four choices in mind, ask for a list of homes featuring those vinyl siding colors and drive by them to see

Less, Yes, But That Doesnt Mean None
By Tresa Erickson In an effort to go green and save time, many homeowners today are opting for composite decks made of wood flour and plastic. Composite decks generally last longer and require far less maintenance than traditional wooden decks. Less, however, is the key word. Composite decks are not indestructible. They do require some maintenance. Here are some tips to keeping yours looking like new. Care for your deck as you would any wooden kitchen floor. Sweep it regularly, taking extra care to remove debris between boards and in gaps. Clean up spills right away to prevent stains. Place a vinylbacked splatter guard beneath your grill to catch grill spills. Keep water away from the deck. Grade the soil underneath to prevent standing water. Use the downspouts and splashguards to direct water away from the deck. Ensure adequate ventilation below and between the decking boards to prevent mold.
Should you ever come across mold, take steps to eradicate it right away. Clean your composite deck, at least twice a year, preferably in the spring and the fall. Use a soft-bristled brush and a multi-purpose cleaner for everyday grime. For serious grime, you may need additional products. Whatever you do, do not use a power washer on your composite deck. This could result in serious damage.
Even with the best of care, composite decks will fade over time. You can live with the change in color or apply a coat of stain to revive the color. Just make sure you use the right product for your deck. Composite decks do require some care, but far less than traditional wood decks. Dont have a composite deck installed and leave it be. Take the time to care for it to ensure it lasts and looks lovely for years.
them to grow. Sod can be installed fairly quickly and easily and applied to almost any surface, flat or inclined, and it will stay put, even in heavy rains, though you may have to stake it. It is also generally weed-free and requires little care. All you will have to do is water the sod heavily for the first few weeks of startup, and it should take root and provide you with the lush lawn you envision. Because it is ready made, sod can be expensive, much more expensive than seed. You have to get it on the ground quick to protect your investment, whereas with seed, you have more leeway and more varieties to choose from. Most experts recommend seeding in the spring or fall. It does take some work to get seed into the ground, from fertilizing to raking to rolling. Seed also takes longer to grow and establish, and when placed on an incline, it can easily wash away. Although it may require less watering in the first
not work as well as you had hoped and you end up with some patchiness, it will be much less of a loss. There are pros and cons to sod and seed. Consider the options carefully, consult with an expert and make the right decision for your lawn and your budget.

Sod Or Seed?
By Tresa Erickson When youre faced with the choice of sod or seed, it can be a difficult decision to make. They are both good options for dealing with a less-thanperfect lawn. There are pros and cons to each, and you must think through your decision carefully. Sod has been professionally cultivated and is ready to go. The roots are already there and just need to be placed into the soil for
weeks, seed will require mulch or hay, both of which can contain weed seeds and lead to weeds. Again, seed is less expensive, so if it does
dryer has to run, makes the t-shirts last longer, and you wont have to fold them. Preserve expensive elasticized items like bras and panties similarly. This practice saves money and time. If you clean your lint halfway through the cycle, your drying time will be cut down as well. -Janet in California

removing stumps. There are others. Check out the Internet and consult with the sales associates at your local nursery, garden center or hardware store. For those who insist on getting the stump out quickly and do not mind a little yard work afterwards, a skid-steer or backhoe might be an option.

a garbage bag for the season. You can also drill some holes into the stump and fill them with salt. For speedier decomposition, you might want to take the chemical route. Check with sales associates at your local hardware store to see what chemicals are available to speed up the decomposition of tree stumps. Then apply the chemical as recommended by the manufacturer. Usually this involves drilling several holes into the stump and filling them with the chemical. . Fire is another option. You can burn out the stump, but first you should check with local authorities and make sure fire is permitted in your area. If so, clear the area around the stump, place some wood on top of the stump and start a fire. Tend to the fire and let it burn until the stump is gone. If the stump is rather low to the ground, your best option might be to bury it. Remove as much of the stump as possible and then cover what remains with dirt. You may have to do this a few times as the dirt around the stump settles. These are just a few less-invasive, costfriendlier options for
you just lost a tree. You cut it down, put the branches into the compost pile and stacked the wood for use later in your fireplace. Now all you have left to contend with is the unsightly stump. You could rent a stump grinder or hire someone to come in with one, but you would rather not expose your lawn and garden to that. What are the alternatives?
bees and butterflies have all gone to bed with the setting of the sun. Toads, moths, bats and owls have replaced them. I remember one misty night in July when a hoard of small white moths hovered like a fractured ghost over the monarda (bee balm). Was this a mating ritual or just a food orgy? Two rows over, far too many 2 inch dastardly slugs were chowing down on my potato leaves! A pair of scissors soon doubled the number and put an end to the depredation. Most memorable was the eerily quiet, gliding flight of two barn owls over the moonlit pond like the ghosts of long lost Hurricanes from WW II. The bark of a fox, ungodly screech of a coon, cough of a deer and the howls and yips of coyote all travel far on the still, damp night air. Humans are truly creatures of sight and

If the tree was small with shallow roots, youre in luck. You can dig out the stump. Grab a good shovel, slide on your gloves and get to work. Dig until you expose the roots. Then cut the roots and pull the stump out. If the tree was large and had a wide root system or deep roots, you might want to try something other than digging. Aiding the decomposition of the stump is one route. You can do this naturally by covering the stump with old leaves, dousing it with water and covering it with

Deodorize the diaper pail with baking soda, sprinkling some on top of dirty diapers to neutralize odors until you can empty the container. Tackle the Bathroom Glub in the tub? For safe, effective, scratchfree cleaning of bathroom tubs and sinks sprinkle baking soda lightly on a clean damp sponge, scrub as usual and rinse. Clean and deodorize a vinyl shower curtain by sprinkling baking soda directly on a clean, damp sponge. Scrub the shower curtain, rinse clean and hang it up to dry. To get rid of dirt and grime from tile or no-wax floors, mix 1/2 cup baking soda in a bucket of warm water. Mop and rinse the floor clean. Bring Life to the Living Areas Guests on their way? Freshen carpets, upholstered furniture and pet beds fast by sprinkling baking soda on the surface. Wait 15 minutes and then vacuum. Keep the litter box fresh, too. Cover the bottom of the box with baking soda, and then fill as usual with litter. In between litter changes, sprinkle baking soda on top of the litter.
Before you take the plunge, you might want to get more information on the planting and care of weeping willows to ensure you are ready for the commitment. The best time to plant a weeping willow is in the spring. Weeping willows can get quite large, very fast, with roots that spread out, sometimes three times more than the canopy. You will need an area that receives full or partial sun away from structures, power lines, concrete, septic tanks, etc. Weeping willows love water, and in fact, can help alleviate water issues in certain areas. If you have an area near water where you can plant a weeping willow, that would be ideal. When you have a site selected, the planting of the tree will not take long. Just turn over the soil, mix in some compost and dig a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball. Then, place the rootball into the hole, fill around it with soil and fertilize it. Add a layer of mulch around the base and some deer repellant if needed. You will want the tree to grow straight, so stake it if necessary. 7830 Rte. 417 West Bolivar, NY 14715

You will need to water the tree regularly for the first year, being careful to aim away from the base of the tree. You dont want root or trunk rot. Make sure the top inches of soil are dry before watering the tree again. You should prune the tree in late winter or early spring. You want the tree to be strong, so prune away smaller branches growing toward the ground. Finally, you will need to clear away weeds and add more mulch on a regular basis. After your weeping willow passes the threeyear mark, it will require far less care. You may have to prune back some of the branches from time to time, but you will only need to water it in drought conditions.
Quality Counts

starting, you may need some tools, and to get your moneys worth, you should shop smart. Before you go shopping, determine first what tools you need the most. Basic gardening requirements include a trowel, rake, hoe, hedge shears and pruners. You might also want to invest in a quality pair of garden gloves, a hose and a wheelbarrow. When shopping for gardening tools, a budget is a must. Figure out what you can afford to spend and stick to it. However, dont skimp. Buy the best you can afford. That way, you wont have to purchase a tool over and over. Look for tools with sharp blades, strong handles and good safety catches to avoid accidents. Pick up the tools you find and make sure you are comfortable handling them. They need to be lightweight enough for you to carry and use for a long period of time. If you have limited hand strength, look for tools with a ratchet mechanism that will make cutting easier. Once you have found some quality tools and brought them home, you must care for them properly to ensure their longevity. Clean them
after every use and dry them off completely to prevent rust. Apply a light coat of oil to any metal parts-wiping them down with a lightly oiled cloth will suffice. Store your tools in a safe, dry space, either in a tool rack or hung on the wall of a garden shed or garage. Have the blades sharpened periodically to prevent damage to plants and needless accidents. As you continue to garden, you will no doubt collect more tools. Remember, buy the best you can afford and take the time to care for them properly afterwards.
to slide out from under the table. I remembered seeing cloth "pillows" that attached to the bottom of chairs. I had no idea how to make or buy them, but as I walked through the thrift store recently, I saw newborn infant socks. They were extremely inexpensive, so I bought enough to cover my chair legs. When I got home, I put them on the chair legs and then used rubber bands to hold them up. Then I folded the cuff of the sock over the top to cover up the bands. They look cute and cost me next to nothing, and now my chairs slide out from under the table easily and don't scratch the floor. These were a lot cheaper than what I remember the "pillows" being. -Cammy

falls down hard steps can lead to serious injury. Bring warmth, comfort and cushioning to your stairs with new carpet. You can opt for wall-towall carpeting or a runner, though with a runner, you may have to have the stairs refinished. While nice, carpeted stairs can be difficult to keep clean. Along with regular vacuuming, you may have to do a deeper cleaning from time to time. If youre not one for hauling the vacuum cleaner or steam cleaner up and down the stairs, consider some alternatives. Many homeowners these days are replacing the carpet on their stairs with hardwood. Although expensive to install, hardwood is durable and easy to clean. Laminate is a more affordable option, and like hardwood, it is easy to clean. Just sweep and dust with a wet-dry mop. If hardwood and laminate are not your style, paint is another option. Paint is very affordable and offers endless possibilities. You can open up the space by painting the stairs white. You can brighten up the space with bolder paint color choices and freehand designs. You can add some whimsy to the space with stenciled or tiled stairs. Just paint the stairs whatever color you want and stencil in some designs or apply tile to the risers. Tiled risers are a feature in many homes of the Southwest. For those concerned about falling on slick, painted stairs, carpet tiles are available for the treads. The sky is the limit when it comes to transforming your stairs. Rethink that tired, worn carpet. like to have sleepovers and can be separated later for older kids. The same goes for that modular cube storage unit. You can stack the cubes one way when your child is young and another way when they are older. As for furniture color, neutral is the best choice, be careful with white furniture, as it doesnt always appeal to teen girls. Accessories can easily be changed out, so rely on them to add color and character to your childs room. Do keep in mind, however, how often kids tastes change, so dont spend a fortune on the accessories for your childs room. Shop for items at flea markets, yard sales and clearance sales. Choose inexpensive posters, prints and calendar pages you can frame rather than custom-framed artwork. Hang a bulletin board for handiwork and add some wallpaper stickups to furniture and walls for pops of color. Decorating your childs room for the long haul is not hard. It just takes some thought of today and tomorrow. Good luck, and dont forget to get the input of your most
important critic, your child. It is their room after all. Give them a say in how it looks, and you may not have to badger them as much later to keep their room clean!
Making smart choices for your childs bedroom will make the decorative transitions smooth as they grow up.

soil is workable. A layer of leaves will help protect the exposed root mass if the soil is still frozen. Pruning: - Early Spring is the time for pruning many trees and shrubs. The exceptions to this are ones that bloom in the spring like forsythia and lilac. These should be pruned after flowering. - Cut back and prune roses when forsythia blooms. Cut back dead or crossing canes to about one-quarter inch above an outward facing bud. - Prune back pussy willows after the catkins are finished blooming. Remove dead branches. Cut the older gray branches to the ground. Cut back the branches from this years growth to a height close to what you can tolerate next year. - Cut back lavender into green wood late in April.

Perennials: - Cut back grasses and other perennials that have been left up for winter interest. Ideally this should be done before the new growth gets more than a few inches high so you dont damage the new growth while cutting back the old. Any plant material that has not harbored disease can be put in the compost pile. - Sow coriander, orach, babys breath, poppy, phlox, and cornflower seeds directly into garden beds. - Once the threat of snow has passed, remove winter debris or any leftover mulch from around areas where spring bulbs are planted. - Wait until the soil is workable to divide perennials. This means it should be above 50 degrees and dry enough not to stay in a clump when squeezed in your hand. Hostas, liriope, daylilies, dicentra, choral bells and Shasta daisies are some perennials that can be divided before new growth starts in spring. Vegetables: - Take the time to plan your vegetable garden taking care to use rotation. Do not plant members of the same plant family (tomatoes and peppers for example) in the same spot as last year. Seed tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. Be sure they will receive adequate light. - Check your seed packages to see whether you should start seeds indoors or direct sow them outside. Also check information on the envelopes for the appropriate number of weeks prior to planting outside. Houseplants: - Houseplants are coming to life with the increase in hours of sunlight. This is a good time to resume feeding. Natural fertilizers are preferable to synthetic ones as the nutrients arent bound to salts. Its the salt that causes the white buildup on the soil and outside of clay pots. Check your houseplants for disease and insects and the roots to see if they need division and/or repotting. Once the outdoor gardening season begins you will have less time for them! - Give houseplants a good shower in the sink or tub to clean off dust buildup from the winter months. For plants too large to move, give the leaves a sponge bath. - Prune off any dead or yellowing leaves and branches. - Any plants that have outgrown their pots can be repotted. Flowerbed Factors
By Tresa Erickson You love flowers, and lucky for you, you have a nice lawn with plenty of room for flowerbeds. You have some idea of the flowers you would like to grow, but your selections will depend upon a host of other factors.
One of the first factors you will have to consider is when you want the flowerbeds to bloom. Spring, summer, fall or year-round? While a flowerbed that blooms throughout the year would be ideal, it wont be easy to attain, especially if you are a beginner, live in a area with harsh winters, travel a lot or change residences throughout the year. Choose a season when you will be around to care for the flowerbeds and appre-ciate the fruits of your labor and select flowers that grow during that season. Along with the season, you will also have to consider the site conditions. Where will the flowerbeds be located? Does each site receive full sun, partial sun or no sun at all? Does the soil drain properly? What is the soil pH? The answers to these questions will dictate the types of flowers you can grow. While you may envision rows and rows of tulips in front of your cottage during the early spring, the soil conditions there might not warrant it. The characteristics of
the flowers themselves will also have bearing in your decision. Some flowers require more space than others. If you have a fairly small bed, you will need to select flowers that spread little, whereas if you have a rather large bed, you might be able to choose a wider variety of flowers, including some that take up a great deal of space. Height, color and texture should be considered as well. Flowerbeds usually feature flowers of varying heights, often with the shorter species in front where they can be seen. Colors and texture may vary but should complement each other and the landscape. Soft pink blooms might look out of place in front of a rough, red cedar plank fence. When you are choosing species for your flowerbeds, take the surroundings into consideration and do your homework. Know what flowers grow best when, where and with what. Read everything you can about flowerbed design and go shopping armed with the right information. The more you know, the better choices you will make and the better your flowerbeds will look. And remember, things change. The flowerbeds you create today may not look like the ones you create 10 years from now. Prepare for your flowerbeds to evolve as your gardening skills improve.
To keep onions fresh for a long period of time, take a pair of pantyhose and cut each leg top off and place onions in one at a time, tying a knot above each onion as you fill the nylon. You can hang this string of onions in a cool dry place. When you need an onion, simply take scissors and snip the bottom one off. You can remove the closet doors or leave them be. That way, you can shut away your office and your mess whenever you wish. Corners Take a look around your home. See a neglected corner? Turn it into a home office with a desk, chair, file cabinet and whatever else you have space for. You can set up a home office in the corner of almost any room from the kitchen to your bedroom. Entryways Take a look at your entryway. Could it serve the dual purpose of welcoming guests and doing paperwork? Move over that hall tree, slide in a desk, and youve got a place to work, a place for someone to sit and a place for guests to hang their coats.
Hallways Take a look at the hallways in your home. Have one that is rather wide or extra long? Tuck a home office into it. All you need is a bit of space for a small desk and chair. If there is a nook in your hallway, you might be able to build a desk into it. Sofa Backs Take a look at your sofa. Could you use a table behind it? Desks make great sofa tables. Rearrange the room, pull the sofa to the middle and add a small desk behind it to serve as both a sofa table and a home office. Stair Landings Take a look at your stair landing. Wouldnt it make a great home office? Depending upon how large the space is, you might be able to have an easy chair for reading. Home offices do not have to be large. You can set one up almost anywhere in your home. Look for under-utilized spaces, like nooks and crannies, then make the best use of the space to create the home office youve always wanted but never had the room for.
