Another Form of Energy Healing

By Chris Kaufman, RN, Energy Therapies Alliance of Central Illinois, LLC

hen you bump your knee, you usually grab it with both hands. Your instinct is to hold the hurt place. This is an example of using innate energy to feel better. That is also a goal of energy work or energy healing. There are many forms of energy healing. Reiki is perhaps the one that people are most familiar with. Another modality of energy work is called Healing Touch. Both Reiki and Healing Touch work with a persons energy system to support his or her self-healing. Reiki uses hands still in specified positions to focus healing energy. In addition to this technique Healing Touch also uses the hands in motion to move and clear energy so that balance can be restored. Healing Touch also provides techniques designed for specific medical conditions or areas of concern. Both Reiki and Healing Touch can be done with light touch or no touch, a benefit for people with painful joints or wounds. There have been few scientific studies to prove the benefits of Healing Touch, but some research has shown that benefits may include: Relief of pain Increased relaxation response Accelerated wound healing Immune system response Increased sense of well-being Reiki and Healing Touch may be effective in support of cancer treatment, healing from injury or surgery, relief from symptoms of depression and other chronic or acute conditions. People who receive Healing Touch report that, Moving the energy contributed to my recovery after surgery and All through the stress of chemotherapy and radiation both my body and my inner self felt supported...I feel strongly that Healing Touch was fundamental to my journey. All appreciate and benefit from the deep relaxation that comes with the work.

Healing Touch developed as a nursing program but is open to everyone. Training is done through a series of hands-on weekend workshops held throughout the country. Level I training equips a person to deal with the bumps and bruises that come with everyday living and is ideal for people who will simply use it for their families, friends, and pets. Additional training through Level 5 adds more specific techniques and applications, including ethical considerations and practitioner preparation. Practitioners can choose an apprenticeship that includes a case study and leads to completing the program. They then have the opportunity to seek certification, a process that involves additional study and practice. There are almost a thousand certified practitioners in the United States. The standardized curriculum supports the credibility of energy workers in conventional medical arenas. Healing Touch practitioners currently have roles in some hospitals, residential programs, private practices, and clinics all over the world. Some have individual practices. The Healing Touch Program has national accreditation with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Accreditation is expected with the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, which will allow medical insurance to cover Healing Touch treatment when physicians and other medical providers prescribe it. This will greatly increase the number of people who can benefit from this gentle, non-invasive modality. It is hoped that results of additional research under way will help energy healing become more accepted by the medical community. Nonetheless, the studies already performed do indicate that, at the very least, concentrated, positive attention provided by one human being to another is consoling and calming which helps a persons healing process. It is important to note that any sort of Energy Healing is utilized in addition to a persons current health regime and does not replace medical treatment but rather complements and supports it. Like Reiki, Healing Touch can be a positive part of your comprehensive toolkit for health. For more information about Healing Touch or Reiki, contact the Energy Therapies Alliance at 309-242-4843.
