Well Control Drillers Method Remove the formation fluid with the original mud.

Kick occurs with bit on bottom. 1) Shut off the pump 2) Pull Kelly out of BOP 3) Close the BOP 4) Close the choke lines if conditions allow 5) Record pressures on the drill pipe and annulus 6) Record the kick volume 7) Prepare to displace the formation fluid

To work the kick up, start the pumps at the kill rate. The circulation pressure should be known before the operation. The drill pipe pressure well remain constant working the bubble to the surface. Drill pipe pressure will be the circulation pressure plus the shut in drill pipe pressure.

Engineers Method Remove the formation fluid with weighted mud. 1) Same as above 2) Calculate the new mud weight and mix it. 3) Calculate the drill pipe pressures 4) Prepare to displace the formation fluid To work the kick, up start the pumps at the kill rate. The drill pipe pressure will decrease as the weighted mud displaces the original mud in the drill pipe. When the new mud reaches the drill bit the drill pipe pressure will be the circulating pressure. Example 15,000 15 ppg mud Pdp 700 psi Normal Rate Kill Rate
