Engineers have been in high-demand over the past year and we wanted to look at hiring trends for the most commonly recruited type of engineer: Industrial Engineers. After declining demand in the last quarter of 2011, the volume of job ads for Industrial engineers has grown steadily so far in 2012, now up 32% compared to January. In May, more than 68,000 job ads were seen online for Industrial Engineers, a new 4-year high in demand. Some of the industries with the most demand for Industrial Engineers were Engineering Services, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, and Medical and Surgical Device Manufacturing, all of which was year-over-year increases in hiring. With this increasing hiring demand, it's not too surprising that Recruiters are likely to see more difficulties in sourcing enough potential candidates and a longer time spent on filling job openings. In fact, the average online posting period of an Industrial Engineer job ad is 46 days nationwide. That's 6.5 weeks spent on sourcing and interviewing potential candidates. Below are the 10 metropolitan areas with the most online job ads during May. Recruiters in Detroit posted 2,400 job ads, up 38% from May of 2011. However, Seattle experienced the greatest yearover-year growth in demand of the below 10 cities, at a 47% increase. Los Angeles, Houston, New York, and San Francisco also increased their hiring demand, while Chicago, Boston, Minneapolis, and San Jose placed fewer ads in May compared to last year. In these areas especially those with fast growing demand Recruiters are likely to see even more difficult conditions when sourcing potential candidates. Even though demand in San Jose and Boston has declined over the past year, these 2 cities are currently seeing one of the longest average posting periods. While the national average is about 6.5 weeks, Recruiters in Boston and San Jose leave their job ads online for more than 7 weeks. Hiring Scale for Industrial Engineers in Boston, MA

In comparison, our Hiring Scale shows us the best places to place job ads for Industrial Engineers. By targeting candidates in the below five cites, you are likely to see less competition from other employers and a shorter time-to-fill on open positions. For example, in Houma, Louisiana there are only 6 employers currently advertising Industrial Engineering job openings. Recruiters are likely to compete less to attract potential candidates. Also, jobs ads remain online for just 38 days more than 1 week shorter than the national average. Best Markets to Recruit Industrial Engineers

inShare Hiring by Oil, Gas, and Mining Companies Almost Doubles in First Months of 2012
By Abby Lombardi on March 8, 2012 in Energy, Engineering, Oil Gas and Mining. The oil, gas, and mining industries in the United States have seen vast fluctuations in hiring over the past several years. Alternative energy sources are becoming more readily available. However, they are far from the norm at this point as is reflected by rising fuel prices. We thought we would take a look at hiring in the oil and gas mining industries to see what it looks like now. In the past 60 days, more than 4,800 jobs were posted online in these mining industries. This represents a 97% increase from last year almost double the number of job ads in the first 2 months of 2011. The employers with the most online job ads during this period were Baker-Hughes, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, and Freeport-McMoRan. Source: WANTED Analytics

The most demanded occupation by oil, gas, and mining companies during this time period was Petroleum Engineer. Over the past 60 days, more than 300 online job ads were posted for this position, a 142% increase compared to last year. Other high-demand jobs included Production Managers, Industrial Engineers, Accountants, Truck Drivers, Mechanic Managers, Computer Support Specialists, Computer Systems Analysts, Geo-scientists, and General Maintenance and Repair Workers. All 10 of these occupations have experienced at least double-digit year-over-year increases in hiring demand, ranging from 58% growth (Truck Drivers) to 289% (Maintenance and Repair Workers.) Source: WANTED Analytics

The 5 locations with the most job ads in these industries are below. Recruiters placed the most ads for job openings located within the Houston metro area, with more than 1,000 listings in the past 60

days. Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), Denver (Colorado), Dallas (Texas), and Tulsa (Oklahoma) rounded out the list of the cities with the highest hiring demand for these jobs. Dallas was one of few US cities that saw a year-over-year decline. Metropolitan Areas with Highest Volume of Job Ads in the Oil, Gas, and Mining Industries

Source: WANTED Analytics

According to our Hiring Scale, Recruiters in these industries are likely to find most jobs easy-to-fill. However, conditions will vary by location and specific occupation. For example, Petroleum Engineers the most demanded job by oil and gas companies over the past 60 days are likely to be moderately difficult-to-fill. The location currently experiencing one of the most difficult recruiting conditions is Odessa, Texas. Here, demand may soon out-pace the local talent supply. Job ads in the Odessa area remain online for 64 days more than 9 weeks or 2 months. On the other hand, if you are a Petroleum Engineer looking for work in Odessa, it is likely that Recruiters will compete heavily for your skills, making work moderately easy-to-find. Source: WANTED Analytics

In comparison, our Hiring Scale also shows that Recruiters looking to fill this job in New Orleans (Louisiana) are likely to see some of the easiest recruiting conditions and shortest time-to-fill, since there are larger talent pools and fewer employers competing for these potential candidates. Other locations that are likely to find Petroleum engineers easier to fill are Dallas, Oklahoma City, Corpus Christi (Texas), and Houston. In these locations, job ads may be online for as few as 36 days or just over 5 weeks. That's almost half the time it takes to fill a job in Odessa. Consequently, if you are a Petroleum Engineer in any of these areas, it is likely that work will be harder to find and possibly take longer than average. inShare Will Manufacturing Hiring Demand Turn Around in 2012?

By Abby Lombardi on February 24, 2012 in Engineering, Manufacturing. Since hiring among manufacturers is often seen as a key to economic recovery, we took a look at hiring trends in this industry to see if things are beginning to pick up. Hiring has been somewhat unsteady over the past few years. It seemed that hiring demand in this sector began improving in 2011, but declined drastically during the last several months of the year and ended in December at the lowest point in 2 years. However, in January 2012, there were 52,000 job ads posted online and despite being down by about 3.5% compared to one year ago, this represents an uptick compared to December. Will hiring continue to increase in 2012 to pre-recession levels? Hiring Demand in the Manufacturing Sector 4 Year Hiring Trend

Some of the industries within the manufacturing sector that had the highest levels of hiring demand are in the below chart. Despite seeing the highest volume of job ads, hiring in the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing industry is down about 44% compared to January 2011, one year ago. Interestingly, Electronic Computer Manufacturing also declined in January (compared to 2011) whereas Computer Storage Device Manufacturing increased. Soft Drink Manufacturing experienced one of the highest year-over-year increases at more than 120%, despite being last on the below 10 industries with the highest demand. Manufacturing Industries with the Most Job Ads January 2012 vs. January 2011

The most demanded field by manufacturers during January was engineering. Combined, engineering jobs accounted for more than 9,600 of the jobs advertised in the manufacturing sector. Industrial Engineer were the single most advertised occupation in January, with more than 4,200 job openings. Mechanical Engineers and Electrical Engineers were also highly in demand. Also appearing as most demanded jobs were several Computer and IT occupation (such as Software Engineers and Computer Systems Analysts), Marketing Managers, Production Managers, and Sales occupations. So, where are these jobs located? The majority of postings were placed for openings in the New York metro area. Los Angeles, Chicago, San Jose, and Boston rounded out the top 5 cities. inShare Hiring Picks up for Wind Energy Projects in January

By Abby Lombardi on February 23, 2012 in Energy, Engineering. Over the past several weeks, we've reported on the hiring trends for job related to several alternative energy sources solar energy and shale mining. Today, we thought we'd look at another type of energy wind power and hiring across the United States. Hiring for this alternative energy increased in 2011, despite some declines in the last months of the year. In January, about 2,400 jobs were advertised online for positions that specified involvement with wind energy. This represents a 32% increase in hiring demand compared to the same month period in 2011. Hiring Demand for Wind Energy Jobs 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

Not surprisingly, most of these jobs are for various types of Engineers. On average, demand for Engineers to work on wind energy projects increased 34% in January 2012 versus January 2011. Industrial Engineers were the most demanded field among wind enery jobs. Other types of Engineers that saw increased volumes of job ads were Mechanical, Electrical, and Aerospace Engineers. Other than engineers, highly demanded occupations include Truck Drivers, Software Engineers, Production Managers, and Wind Turbine Service Technicians. The 5 metropolitan areas with the highest volume of job ads for wind energy projects during January were Cincinnati (Ohio), Houston (Texas), Erie (Pennsylvania), Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), and Albany (New York). Recruiters in Cincinnati not only placed the most job ads but also saw the highest growth of these 5 locations, with 132% more jobs placed in January 2012 than were advertised in January 2011. Albany, however, was the only location of these top 5 to see a year-over-year decline. Hiring demand in the Albany area is down 18% compared to last year. 5 Metro Areas with Highest Demand for Wind Energy Jobs 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

Of these 5 high-demand locations, our Hiring Scale shows that these jobs will be fairly hard-to-fill due to the specialized skill requirements that are often needed in these jobs. Despite seeing yearover-year declines in hiring demand, Recruiters in Albany are likely to see some of the most difficult and longest recruitment processes in the US. In the Albany area, job ads are posted online for an average of 48 days or about 7 weeks. In comparison, Recruiters in Philadelphia are likely to have the easiest locations of the above 5 cities. Consequently, if you are searching for work in the energy industry and have experience on wind power projects, it is likely to be easier to find a job in Albany since there are more employers hiring and fewer candidates competing for jobs. It is likely to be harder to find work in this space in Philadelphia. Hiring Scale for Wind Energy Skills Albany vs. Nationally

"Big Data" Brings Big Hiring for Analytical Skills

By Abby Lombardi on February 21, 2012 in Occupations. Companies are collecting more and more information every day growing by 50% every year and doubling every 2 years. Management firm McKinsey puts the United States on track to face a shortage by 2018 of 140,000 190,000 people with much-needed analytical skills, in addition to 1.5 million managers (and analysts) that use these analyses to make daily business decisions. With all this talk about data analysis, we thought we would take a look at job ads that specifically require in-depth analytical skills. We found more than 18,000 job ads posted online during January 2012 that required data analysis skills a 35% increase compared to January 2011 and about 75% growth versus the same month in 2010. The volume and growth suggests that many companies are trying to address this hiring trend early and demand is likely to continue. The occupations that most often demand in-depth analytical skills include:

Computer Systems Analysts Management Analysts Market Research Analysts Software Engineers (Applications) Industrial Engineers Operations Research Analysts

All of these occupations have seen year-over-year growth in hiring demand for these skills. More than 3,600 job ads were placed in January for Computer Systems Analysts the most of any occupation and growing 45% compared to last year. Metropolitan areas with the highest volume of job listings for in-depth analytical skills during January 2012 were New York (New York), Washington (DC), San Francisco (California), Los Angeles (California), and Boston (Massachusetts). If your company is one of the 5,500 organizations that placed job ads for these skills in January, you are likely to find openings difficult-to-recruit. According to the Hiring Scale, companies in San Francisco are currently experiencing more difficult conditions when recruiting candidates with analytical backgrounds. Hiring demand in San Francisco continues to grow (up about 23% compared

to January 2011), while the local talent pool of qualified data-savvy professionals is not growing at the same pace. Employers in this area are likely to compete heavily to attract qualified talent and experience a longer time-to-fill than other areas across the United States. In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting analytical skills are St. Joseph (Missouri), El Paso (Texas), and Tucson (Arizona). These areas are likely to fill job openings faster than the rest of the United States, since hiring demand is low compared to the available talent supply. The average time-to-fill in some of these locations shorter by as much as 2 weeks, which will save companies time and money spent on recruiting talent. inShare The Best Markets for Posting Industrial Engineer Job Ads
By Carolyn Menz on January 28, 2012 in Engineering. Earlier this week, we wrote that the hiring demand for Industrial Engineers has been declining. Despite this, recruiters filling Industrial Engineer job openings are likely to be facing challenges. The Hiring Scale shows that this is still a challenging position to fill with approximately 180,000 potential candidates in the workforce and over 5,500 companies trying to fill openings.

Source: WANTED Analytics

Given it is likely to be very challenging for recruiters to fill these roles, they should look at some alternate markets for placing job ads. Take a look at the top ten best markets for posting these positions. You can see by the Hiring Scale that it will likely be much easier for employers to attract candidates in these locations.

inShare Will Hiring for Industrial Engineers Bounce Back?

By Abby Lombardi on January 25, 2012 in Engineering. Yesterday, we posted some suggestions for recruiting Engineers across industries. This afternoon, we wanted to give a quick update on hiring demand for the most common type of engineering job Industrial Engineers. During December, about 13,000 job ads were posted online for Industrial Engineers representing a 2% year-over-year increase from December 2010. Although this is up from last year, this is a significant decline since earlier in the year. As you can see below by the hiring demand graph, the volume of job ads increased steadily until a new 4-year high was reached in May when more than 20,000 jobs were advertised online. However, demand has declined and is almost flat with last year. However, when comparing to the past several years, demand has grown 72% versus 2009, and 49% from December 2008. The 5 metropolitan areas with the highest volumes of job ads during December are below. Organizations in Los Angeles not only placed the most job ads during December, but also experienced the greatest year-over-year increase in volume. Hiring demand in this area surged 38% between December 2010 and December 2011. Detroit, on the other hand, was the only location of these top 5 that saw a decline, placing 4% fewer job ads for Industrial Engineers than one year ago. 5 Metropolitan Areas with the Highest Volume of Job Ads for Industrial Engineers December 2011

inShare Ways to Manage Increased Hiring Demand for Industrial Engineers

By Abby Lombardi on January 10, 2012 in Engineering, Hiring Demand Indicators. Hiring demand for Engineers was strong in 2011 and it is projected to continue in 2012, making it one of the more difficult jobs to recruit in the United States. Today, we look at hiring for the most demanded Engineering job Industrial Engineers and some ways that Recruiters and hiring managers may be able to handle a limited talent supply. In December, more than 12,900 job ads were posted for Industrial Engineers by 3,800 companies. Not only are there many companies recruiting for Industrial Engineering talent, but many companies are recruiting for hundreds of openings and Recruiters are likely to compete heavily to attract enough talent to fill all their open positions. For example, GE Energy placed more than 200 unique job ads for this occupation in December, the most of any employer. During December, Industrial Engineers were most demanded in Los Angeles, California. More than 500 job ads were placed for openings in this area a 36% year-over-year increase compared to December 2010. Other cities with high demand for these Engineers included Houston, Chicago, Boston, and Detroit. Heat Map of 100 Cities with Highest Demand for Industrial Engineers

Source: WANTED Analytics

Of these cities with the highest demand, our Hiring Scale shows that recruiting conditions in Houston, Texas are likely to be among the most difficult. In the Houston metro area, there are currently 289 employers with open job ads for Industrial Engineers. However, the talent pool is small in relation to the high level of demand. There are an estimated 4,500 Industrial Engineers in the local Houston talent pool or about 0.17% of the entire Houston workforce. Recruiters in this area are likely to compete more heavily than average and experience a longer time-to-fill for open job reqs. On average, job ads for Industrial Engineers openings located in Houston are online for an average of 47 days (or just less than 7 weeks.) Candidate Supply of Industrial Engineers in Houston, Texas

In order to source enough candidates and fill open positions, hiring managers and Recruiters may want to discuss hiring from other areas with more favorable recruiting conditions. Below are 5 locations currently experiencing the easiest conditions for sourcing Industrial Engineers.

1. Palm Bay, Florida 2. Houma, Louisiana 3. Binghamton, New York 4. Anderson, South Carolina 5. Lakeland, Florida Hiring Scale for Industrial Engineers in Houston, TX (Harder to Recruit Location)

If relocating talent is not an option for your organization, there are likely to be alternative sources of Industrial Engineers near your area. For example, Recruiters in Houston should consider placing job ads in the Waco or College Station, Texas areas (about 8o miles from Houston), since these areas are also experiencing easier conditions. Job ads in College Station have an average posting period of just 27 days (or just under 4 weeks) a significantly shorter time than in Houston. Additionally, Recruiters and hiring managers should look at other skills that may be easily translated to the job you are hiring. For example, Mechanical Engineers are experiencing better recruiting conditions than Industrial Engineers. Also, many times Industrial Engineers go by different job titles that you may be overlooking. Below are 10 of the most common job titles for Industrial Engineers do you include these in your candidate searches? 1. Quality (or Quality Assurance or QA) Engineer 2. Process Engineer 3. Recruiters here placed about 500 online ads at a 22% increase compared to the same 30-day period in 2010. Recruiters in Houston, Texas placed the second highest volume of job ads, with 450 ads and seeing a 12% growth versus 2010. Other areas with high demand included Chicago, Detroit, Boston, New York, and San Jose. Of these high-demand areas, San Jose has the highest advertised salary range from $90,000 to $100,000. In comparison, the national range is $72,000 to $85,000. Below is a hiring demand map of the 100 areas with the highest demand for Industrial Engineers during November. Despite declining hiring demand, recruiting conditions are likely to be difficult on average. According to our Hiring Scale, there are about 2.9 potential candidates in the workforce for every job opening currently being advertised online. Also, we are able to see that one of the hardest recruiting conditions is currently in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Here, there are 0.5 candidates for every job, meaning that Recruiters are facing a talent shortage since there aren't enough qualified candidates in the local workforce to meet the hiring demand. In order to fill jobs, Recruiters should consider sourcing from outside the Harrisonburg area and in locations with better conditions. For example, the Hiring Scale shows us the locations with the easiest locations to recruit Industrial Engineers are Houma Bay (Louisiana), Binghamtom (New York), Johnstown (Pennsylvania), Palm Bay (Florida), and Kokomo (Indiana). Not only are talent pools in these 5 locations larger (with up to 28 potential candidates per job ad), but also the average posting period is shorter as few as 38 days (or 5.4 weeks) versus the national average of 46 days (or 6.5 weeks). Since job ads are listed online for shorter periods of time, Recruiters are able to reduce their cost-per-hire and time-to-fill.
