Create a TOR Button in Chrome for On-Demand Anonymous Browsing

The TOR Project provides free, distributed worldwide proxies for anonymous browsing and private downloading. TOR comes with a built-in Firefox add-on, but Chrome users can get a handy on/off button for TOR with this setup, explained by commenter brssnkl. Step 1: Install TOR (Note: The "Installation Bundle" packages for Windows and Mac are the preferred downloads).

To check if Chrome is actively using TOR for its browsing, right-click the TOR button in your system tray (or, on a Mac, click the onion icon in your status bar) and open the bandwidth monitor tool. Browse to a site with some decently large images, and if TOR's bandwidth transfer moves up, you're browsing the web anonymously through TOR and Chrome.

I think Safari handles private browsing better than the other browsers. It's quick and easy: Click "Private Browsing," and it starts without having to open a new window like Chrome and Firefox. prom oted by bobby .tables bobby.tables @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: Maybe, but that's not real private browsing. It only hides the visited sites from the history etc. - so basically it hides your last porn site visit from your wife (for eyample, no insult intended). TOR provides you with a way to browser really anonymous, meaning: it hides your browsing from authorities and even your ISP - that may come in handy in quite a few countries or certain "situations" with copyright laws. Squalor @bobby.tables @bobby.tables: I understand that. But I don't do anything illegal online, so I don't need that kind of privacy. Double.Y ou.See @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: Privacy is about illegality, not always.

Bender @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: I have nothing to hide so who cares if they raid my house without warning... It isnt always a matter of illegal so much as a matter of why should a company or government have to keep an eye on what I buy, what my interests are or what brand of shoes I prefer. Its the little things that keep creeping into our lives that cause the big headaches down the road. james.harding @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: then chrome's incognito method of private browsing is far superior to Safari's. Squalor @james.harding @james.harding: I hate Incognito. It opens an unnecessary new window. Right, house raids--skip the hyperbole, bender123. TopcatF14B @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: So this post was only for you?... in the real world either, that's why you walk around naked and live in a glass house without curtains, post your salary and all your financial transactions including bank account balance and retirement fund value on your blog, right? because you have nothing to hide? gimme a break could we please dispense with this ridiculous bumpersticker-depth response to every discussion where people express a desire or concern about privacy? Squalor @TopcatF14B @TopcatF14B: No. I also never said nor implied it was. I posted my opinion, what I think, just as you posted your unnecessarily trollish opinion. Squalor @vinylrake @vinylrake: Did I say people shouldn't be concerned about privacy? Hold on, let me read what I posted . . . Nope. Nothing I posted stated people shouldn't be concerned about their privacy. Thanks for trying though. Arterion @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: Actually, that's the conclusion that logically follows. "I don't do anything illegal online, therefor I don't need that kind of privacy. Thus, only people who do illegal things online need that kind of privacy." Which is, I think, rightly insulting to privacy advocates. If I get pulled over and a cop wants to search me car, I say no. Not because I have something to hide, but because of the principal of the matter. m9105826 @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: Y ou imply that Tors only use is for people doing illegal things online. That's definitely not its intended use. Squalor @Arterion @Arterion: If that's "insulting," privacy advocates need to grow up. According to you guys, my not wanting to use this TOR button means I want the cops to randomly search my house and car and everyone elses' houses and cars. I didn't think my comment would spark such a parade of hyperbole, but obviously I was incorrect. sigurrosuntitled @Squalor @The world will know squalor. @Arterion: Y ou clowns need to grow up. Seriously, it's the internet. People disagree with you. Get over it. Gabriel Mot. @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: I also like Opera's private browsing - it allows you to open a Private Tab alongside "non-private" ones. Mavlis @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: Y ou insinuated that only people that do something illegal online need that level of privacy. Which is pretty close. His response was clarifying your misunderstanding about private browsing. This article is referring to IP-based privacy, which has nothing (at all) to due with client-level privacy which

you mentioned - hence the responses you got. Squalor @Mavlis @Mavlis: No, I said, "I don't do anything illegal online, so I don't need that kind of privacy." The pronoun, the subject, in that sentence is "I" because I had been referring to myself. All of you were mistaken and incorrectly inferred. I haven't used Opera in a while, xryback. That's a really nice feature to do private browsing on a tab-by-tab basis. deshman02 @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: No, you said only criminals need privacy and you're not a criminal. Implying ONLY criminals need privacy and your opinion is fact. Do us all a favour, troll elsewhere. Squalor @deshman02 @deshman02: Taking a peak at your comments, it's no surprise you'd say something so ridiculous. Let me make this really clear for you: I think privacy is important. I don't think we should be watched nor monitored by the government or any third-party organization. I, however, don't need the TOR button. Bernie Wallace @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: And FIGHT!! sj21 @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: All you had to do is say "Oh, I did not know what exactly TOR does" instead of getting into this nasty debate. TOR and "private browsing" in Safari/Firefox/Chrome are two different features altogether. Why would you use either is a different discussion but your comment comparing TOR to private browsing is irrelevant. Imfromthenet @vinylrake @vinylrake: harsh but true Robbzilla @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: " I don't need that kind of privacy." Y ou imply that you shouldn't be concerned with that kind of privacy simply because you don't do anything illegal. That's a fallacy, which vinylrake pointed out. So yeah, you did, unless you don't communicate with your bank, your job, or your stock portfolio, never post pics or put any personal information online. Y ou see, none of these are illegal activities, which you contend are the only activities that require a degree of privacy above your laughable precautions. vinylrake @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: don't know if you are being intentionally obtuse or not, but if all you meant to say was that you don't need the TOR button and despite the words in your comment to the contrary, you didn't mean to imply anything about people who do want or need the TOR button vis-a-viz illegal activities, you might want to stop and think about the inference of what you write before you hit the SHARE button.

communication is unfortunately a two-way street, and when the only person who understands what i meant to say is me -that's generally a sign that my side of the communication exchange was less than clear. your mileage will undoubtably vary ... though it wouldn't if you were following all the relevant laws. Squalor @vinylrake @vinylrake: I have no control over what you infer. If I write "I," then I'm talking about myself. I don't write "I" and mean "we" or "they," but if that's what you think, there's nothing I can do about it. vinylrake @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: Who's trolling now? Effective communication requires work by two parties. Y ou can't just spit out stuff off the top of your head then claim everyone else is wrong because your words don't accurately convey your meaning, or if your thoughts are worded in such a way that 9 out of 10 people reading what you write come to a completely different conclusion that what you intended - unless of course you are going to use the "I can't help it if 9/10 people are stupid" defense. But seriously, you don't understand logical inference? Squalor @vinylrake @vinylrake: Trolling? If you say so. I understand literal speech, and if someone says "I," I'm not going to assume he or she is talking about everyone or a group of people. It's as simple as that. There was no logical inference. Y ou guys were simply biased and thought I didn't care about privacy because I said I didn't need TOR. vinylrake @Squalor @The world will know squalor.: yes, i think you've made it pretty clear that you understand LITERAL speech, the question is whether you understand inference - which I suspect you do and are just unwilling to look at what you wrote from anyone's point of view other than your own. And no, the general comments about your post weren't assuming you didn't care about privacy (a nice attempt at reframing the conversation (aka deflection) though) but were more in response to the words you LITERALLY wrote that stated that the REASON you didn't need TOR is because you weren't doing anything illegal. Since the reason Y OU don't need TOR is because you aren't doing anything illegal it's a pretty obvious conclusion that you you would only need TOR if you were doing something illegal. It's not a leap at all to go from there to assume you were speaking in general terms about TOR and privacy - that you see the kind of privacy TOR provides as something people doing illegal things need. Granted it's not what you literally said, but then again, inference never is so please don't reply by saying "that's not what I said". We get that. Squalor @vinylrake @vinylrake: Did you read everyone's posts? There were plenty who thought I was against privacy. If you understand what I said was only in reference to my preferences, what was the point of
