THE CIS MISSION
Chinese International School (CIS) is committed to the achievement of academic excellence and is characterized and enriched by its dual-language program in Chinese and English. The mission of Chinese International School is to inspire students to a life-long love of learning. The school encourages intellectual curiosity and independent, critical and creative thinking which will maximize students' potential and promote the growth of the whole person. The school prepares its students to be compassionate, ethical and responsible individuals, contributing to local and global communities, respectful of other views, beliefs and cultures, and concerned to make a difference in the world.

ACCREDITATION/MEMBERSHIPS
Chinese International School is registered with the Hong Kong Government's Education Bureau and accredited by ECIS (European Council of International Schools) and NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges). The school is a member of The College Board, NACAC (National Association of College Admission Counselors), OACAC (overseas division of NACAC), CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education), EARCOS (East Asia Regional Council of Schools), ECIS (European Council of Independent Schools) and NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools).

THE FACULTY
Chinese International School has 181 full-time faculty and professional staff members and 6 part time, of whom hold 187 advanced certificates or graduate degrees. Teachers come from Africa, Australia, China, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

THE STUDENT BODY

Chinese International School currently enrolls 616 students in Primary School (Reception to Year 6) and 819 students in Secondary School (Years 7 to 13). The student body consists of students from Hong Kong, and other Asian countries (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand), Australia, Canada, Europe (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM: YEARS 10 - 13

The languages of instruction at CIS are English and Putonghua (Chinese). The school operates on a term system with examinations only in Year 12 (May) and Year 13 (February and May). The students are not ranked, nor do we compute a Grade Point Average. YEARS 10 - 11: All students now follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP), studying a common curriculum of 8 core subjects plus one optional subject. Assessment is by internally marked and externally moderated coursework. Prior to 2004, students selected 7-8 courses from the two-year IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) University of Cambridge Local Examination Scheme: Art; Computer Studies; Coordinated Sciences; Chinese Language; Design & Technology; Drama; English Language; English Literature; French; Geography; History; Mathematics; Music; Physical Education. YEARS 12 - 13: All students pursue a course of study in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme(IBDP), selecting three Higher Level subjects and three Standard subjects, along with the required Theory of Knowledge course, Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) projects, and the four-thousand word Extended Essay (personal research project). DP course selections include Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Economics, Geography, History, Biology, Chemistry, Design Technology, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Visual Arts, Film, Music, and Theatre. Students take their DP Examinations in May of Year 13, with final results available in early July. All students in Years 10-13 follow a Physical Education course. GRADING SYSTEM
Beginning August 2001, the Secondary School adopted the International Baccalaureate (IB) seven point grading scale (1-7) as the only grading system for Year 7 through Year 13. This 1-7 scale is used by the IB Organization in grading students for the Diploma as well as the Middle Years Program. Grades of 1-7 are used for all internal assessment, external examinations, and transcripts. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) RESULTS
The full IB diploma was pursued by all 111 members of the class of 2012. One hundred and ten students (99%) successfully fulfilled all requirements for the award of the Diploma. Thirty-eight of the 111 students (34%) were awarded the bi-lingual IB diplomas. Point scores per student (basic pass 24 points, maximum score 45 points) were as follows: 40+ points: 35 - 39: 30 - 34: 41 students (37%) 47 students (42%) 18 students (16%) 24 - 29: Below 24: 5 students (5%) 0 student (0%)

Of the 111 students, two students are in the process of applying to universities in Australia; three students will be taking time off prior to commencing their studies.
