Memorandum

To: CC: Principal Melinda Springman Mrs. Susan Grigsby

From: Ayoko Dogbe (Media Center Intern) Date: 5/1/2013 Re: Library Media Center Program Evaluation

I sat down with Mrs. Grigsby to evaluate the Elkins Pointe Middle School Library Media Center Program as part of one of my practicum requirements. While interning I have noticed how much of a great program Mrs. Grigsby is running many of the target indicators were exemplary already. As a matter of fact out of the 19 categories, only 2 were in the proficient range. We have discussed together ways that these two categories can be brought up to the exemplary range. Category 4: The library media center resources encourage and support reading, viewing and listening. This category we decided was not exemplary due to the audiobooks not fully supporting instructions. Mrs. Grigsby is in the middle of revamping the selection in that manner with additional audiobooks and also e-books to enhance the offerings in all formats to the staff and students and different stakeholders. Category 8: There shall be a plan for flexibly scheduled library media center access for students and teachers in groups or as individuals simultaneously throughout each instructional day. Accessibility shall refer to the facility, the staff and the resources and shall be based on instructional need.

In this category Mrs. Grigsby agreed that there was not many hours offered outside of regular school hours for students/staff to make use of the media center. There is currently the Starhouse program that helps Hispanic students with homework but is run by teachers and funded by private organizations. She is planning to expand the hours in the future to allow more of the media center availability. All in all we talked about areas that were really working well and were in the exemplary range such as Category 13 where Galileo is easily accessible to students through the online catalog and also how emphasis is made at the beginning of the year by Mrs.Grigsby on using Galileo. We also referred to Category 15 where Mrs. Grigsby felt that she is fully supported by the principal in managing the program and she made mention of how the principal included her in being featured in an article in the newsletter. All in all this is a very well-run and successful program. Action plan to bring Category 4 and Category 8 from proficient to exemplary: - Mrs. Grisgby will evaluate the entire collection by the end of the next school year in order to update it with additional digital resources, such as audiobooks, e-books as well as web resources - Mrs. Grigsby will set up a meeting with the media committee and together they will brainstorm the different possibilities of providing additional flexible access to teachers and students of the media center and its resources. - A survey will be created by committee and distributed to all stakeholders to determine the needs and how to expand the media center hours, resources and materials in order to bring the program to an exemplary level - Collection of data will be completed by Mrs. Grigsby and presented to Principal Springman for final approval before implementation by Mrs. Grigsby and the media center clerk in collaboration with teachers.
