Two explosions have hit the finish line of the Boston Marathon, causing multiple injuries. TV footage showed what appeared to be streets littered with debris and blood, with paramedics carrying stretchers.

US media is reporting multiple injuries from the "large explosions" at the finish line. Boston police confirmed at least one explosion near 673 Boylston Street near the finish line of the race. Marathon organisers said there had been two explosions.

"There was an explosion, police, fire and EMS are on the scene. We have no indication of how many people are injured," a spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department said. The explosions occurred as thousands of runners finished the 117th running of the Boston Marathon, with crowds watching and cheering at the finish.

She had just picked up her medal and turned around to look for her husband when she saw and heard the blast near the finish line. "We didn't know if it was natural gas or fireworks," Smith told Huntsville Times/al.com reporter Steve Doyle by phone Monday afternoon.

"It was just a real deep, cannon kind of sound. From where I was standing, there was just this big puff of smoke."

In the chaos that followed, Smith said it took about 45 minutes to find her husband, Parker Smith. The couple has a bird's-eye view of the surreal scene from their hotel room on 27th floor of The Westin Copley Place.

They were also close enough to hear a third explosion that Boston police say occurred at JFK Library. "We're looking down on a gazillion cop cars and ambulances," said Amy Smith.

Smith, who finished her first Boston Marathon in 3:43:44, said terrorism was not her initial reaction because the mood surrounding the race was so festive all weekend. The couple planned to eat dinner Monday night at Boston's Union Oyster House to celebrate Amy Smith finishing the race. "I'm not sure if we'll get to go," she said.

Updated at 6:21 p.m. Brandon Mader, 28, and Zach Koch, 27, had finished the race about an hour before the blasts occurred and had just walked into their hotel when they heard what had happened at the finish line.

The former University of Alabama in Huntsville runners were taking part in their first and second Boston Marathons, respectively, Mader told Huntsville Times/al.com reporter Pat Ammons in a phone interview. Mader said his first reaction on hearing about the was "severe disappointment" that anyone would do something to mar such a special event. The marathon "is the identity of Boston on the world stage," Mader said. "To hurt the race, to hurt the city, and, of course, to kill people and hurt people was very disappointing."

"I had probably crossed the finish line less than five minutes before it happened," Taylor said about 30 minutes after the explosion. "It just became pure chaos and we had to get out. "I can feel my phone going off like crazy," she said as other people attempted to reach her by cell phone.

"They're saying it was trash cans. It was just chaos down there. You can hear the fire engines and medical people. It's bad."

There were five entrants from Lauderdale County, two from Marshall and Morgan counties and one each from Lawrence, Franklin, Limestone and Cullman counties in north Alabama. Taylor said she had just completed the race and received her medal, a bottle of water and a blanket that all runners get at the end of the race when the explosions happened. "There were two explosions, one big one and one small one - right after the other," she said. "At first, we thought it was a compressor. Then everybody started saying it was a bomb.

Everybody just started trying to run. It's hard to run after you run a marathon but there were people rushing to get out of the area. "When one bomb went off, you didn't know if something else was going to go off."

Several thousand runners were still on the course, Taylor said, and she estimated there was about a thousand spectators at the finish line when the explosions took place.

"It was very crowded," Taylor said. "It was very, very crowded."

The Boston Marathon's Final Mile Was Dedicated to Newtown Victims

Adding further heartbreak to utter tragedy, the last mile of Monday's Boston Marathon, which was rocked by at least two explosions resulting in an unknown number of injuries and casualties Monday afternoon, was dedicated to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting massacre.

Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio said before the race that had a "special significance" because it was 26.2 miles long and there was 26 victims in the Newtown attack.

There was also a group of Newtown parents running as part of a group called Team Newtown Strong who were raising money for local charities. A banner honoring the victims, hung at the end of the 26th mile, can be seen in the photo above

Update 4:07 p.m.: Newtown families were reportedly seated in the VIP section right by where the explosions went off. There's no word whether they are among the 23 injured and two dead from the explosions.

Why Was the New York Post the Outlier in Boston Marathon Coverage?

The New York Post is either the most well-sourced newspaper in the country, the luckiest paper in the country, or an awful rag stirring up hate for Muslims. It depends on who you ask on a wild Monday in Boston, really.

And whether or not they can prove a controversial report is correct.

The Post reported around 4:28 p.m. that a 20-year-old "Saudi national" is "under guard" by police at an undisclosed Boston hospital, according to "law enforcement sources." They did identify him as a suspect. They also reported 12 people were killed in the attacks, even though only two victims have been reported by Boston police so far.

Initially, it seemed there wasn't a hope in hell the Post's report was accurate.

A Boston police department spokesperson told Talking Points Memo's Hunter Walker that they didn't know "where [the Post was] getting their information from, but it didn't come from us."

"Friends: please try to refrain sharing information from NY Post. Great headlines, poor reporting standards," said one. "Remain calm and don't report anything from the NY Post," said another. "Its better to be right than be first. The New York Post is learning that the hard way today," someone opined.

And the news about the Saudi Arabian suspect seemed to infuriate many observers on Twitter.

For NY Post Superfan @batemanny: If it comes out in the wash that 12 people were dead and a Saudi was in custody three hours ago, mea culpa. So the Post is either so far ahead of the story the story or wrong in the worst possible way. Reports are still foggy right now, but it seems the Post was more right than wrong about everything. NBC News is now reporting Boston Police are "guarding" a wounded man at a Boston hospital. CBS' John Miller is also reporting a Saudi national was taken into custody after the bombing. Miller also said the suspect is denying any involvement with the bombings. The L.A. Times adds that a Saudi national was taken to a hospital and questioned about the attack, according to federal law enforcement sources. "The person was not identified as a suspect," they add, though. The Federal Aviation Administration is warning pilots that it has created a no-fly zone over the site of two explosions at the annual Boston marathon.

The agency said in a notice issued Monday about an hour after the explosions that a no-fly zone with a 3.5mile radius has been created over 811 Boylston St.

About an hour after the explosions the FAA issued a notice to pilots that a no-fly zone with a 3.5-mile radius has been created over 811 Boylston St. The zone was later reduced in a subsequent notice to a 2.3-mile radius. The zone is limited to flights under 3,000 feet in altitude, which is lower than most airliners would fly except when taking off or landing. The no-fly zone was effective immediately, and will remain in effect until further notice, the agency said. Pilots planning flights are urged to call their local flight service station. In order to prevent planes from violating the no-fly zone, the FAA briefly held planes bound for Logan around the country on the ground while air traffic procedures at the airport were reconfigured to bring planes in from the northeast and send them out to the southeast over Boston Harbor. Update (5:39 PM): NBC News is also reporting there is a "possible suspect" being guarded at a Boston hospital. After that report, a spokesperson for the Boston Police Department reiterated that they had "no confirmation" of any possible suspect in custody.

Update (6:06 PM): At a press conference, Boston police commissioner Edward Davis said reports of a suspect under guard at a hospital were "not true."

Eyewitness: Authorities Announced Drill Before Boston Explosions

An eyewitness to the two explosions at the Boston Marathon today said that a drill was repeatedly announced before the bombs exploded and that he thought it was odd bomb sniffing dogs were in place before the blast.

University of Mobiles Cross Country Coach Ali Stevenson told Local 15 News, They kept making announcements on the loud speaker that it was just a drill and there was nothing to worry about.

It seemed like there was some sort of threat, but they kept telling us it was just a drill. The news station also reports that Stevenson thought it was odd there were bomb sniffing dogs at the start and finish lines.

An eyewitness to the two explosions at the Boston Marathon today said that a drill was repeatedly announced before the bombs exploded and that he thought it was odd bomb sniffing dogs were in place before the blast.

University of Mobiles Cross Country Coach Ali Stevenson told Local 15 News, They kept making announcements on the loud speaker that it was just a drill and there was nothing to worry about.

It seemed like there was some sort of threat, but they kept telling us it was just a drill.

The news station also reports that Stevenson thought it was odd there were bomb sniffing dogs at the start and finish lines. Stevenson then describes hearing the explosions as he ran away from the scene, having just completed the marathon.

If this report is accurate, it clearly suggests there could have been some degree of prior knowledge of the bombing, which killed two people and injured at least 23. The fact that the explosions were preceded and overlapped by adrill of an almost identical nature mirrors other major terror attacks, such as the 7/7 bombings in London.

If the electrical fire or the incendiary device caused this damage, the room in the Library where the fire or explosion took place must have been just inside the building.

No media sources are specifically reporting that, which seems quite odd. The press is merely stating there was a fire in a room in the Library. The fact that the fire was quite close to an entrance certainly rates a mention. It adds juicy media drama to the report. But there is no coverage of the fact.

An overwhelming percentage of people deal with space-time in a passive way. They receive it, so to speak. They are presented with that fundament of reality and they blindly accept it. In what could be major break in the Boston Marathon case, investigators are on the hunt for a man seen in a department store surveillance video dropping off a bag at the site of the bombings, a local politician said Wednesday.

Separately, a law enforcement official confirmed that authorities have found an image of a potential suspect but don't know his name. The development less than 48 hours after the attack, which left three people dead and more than 170 wounded

marked a possible turning point in a case that has investigators analyzing photos and videos frame by frame for clues to who carried out the twin bombings and why. City Council President Stephen Murphy, who said he was briefed by Boston police, said investigators saw the image on surveillance footage they got from a department store near the finish line and matched the findings with witness descriptions of someone leaving the scene.

"I know it's very active and very fluid right now that they are on the chase," Murphy said. He added: "They may be on the verge of arresting someone, and that's good."

The bombs were crudely fashioned from ordinary kitchen pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails and ball bearings, investigators and others close to the case said. Investigators suspect the devices were then hidden in black duffel bags and left on the ground. As a result, they were looking for images of someone lugging a dark, heavy bag. Several media outlets reported that a suspect had been identified from surveillance video taken at a Lord & Taylor department store between the sites of the bomb blasts.

The turn of events came with Boston in a state of high excitement over conflicting reports of a breakthrough. A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told the AP around midday that a suspect was in custody.

The official, who was not authorized to divulge details of the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the suspect was expected in federal court. But the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office in Boston said no arrests had been made. By nightfall, there was no evidence anyone was in custody. No one was taken to court.

The law enforcement official, who had affirmed there was a suspect in custody even after federal officials denied it, was unable to obtain any further information or explanation. At least 14 bombing victims, including three children, remained in critical condition.

Dozens of victims have been released from hospitals, and officials at three hospitals that treated some of the most seriously injured said they expected all their remaining patients to survive.

A 2-year-old boy with a head injury was improving and might go home Thursday, Boston Children's Hospital said. On Wednesday, investigators in white jumpsuits fanned out across the streets, rooftops and awnings around the blast site in search of clues. They picked through trash cans, plastic cup sleeves and discarded sports drink dispensers.

Boston remained under a heavy security presence, and some people admitted they were nervous about moving about in public spaces. Tyler King, a personal trainer from Attleboro who works in Boston, said four of five clients canceled on him a day earlier because they were worried about venturing into the city.

He took the train in, but "I kind of kept my head on a swivel." Kenya Nadry, a website designer, took her 5-year-old nephew to a playground.

"There's still some sense of fear, but I feel like Boston's resilient," she said. "The fine men in blue will take care of a lot of it."

Police were stationed on street corners across downtown Boston, while National Guardsmen set up tents on the Boston Common and stationed tactical vehicles.

Dr. Horacio Hojman, associate chief of trauma at Tufts Medical Center, said patients were in surprisingly good spirits when they were brought in. "Despite what they witnessed, despite what they suffered, despite many of them having lifethreatening injuries, their spirits were not broken," he said.

"And I think that should probably be the message for all of us that this horrible act of terror will not bring us down." A massive explosion has ripped through a fertiliser plant in Waco, Texas, leaving dozens of people injured and damaging several buildings. Follow our live updates here. 1.32pm A local medical official believes at least 60-70 people have died, with one rescuer reportedly seeing five dead bodies, according to KWTX.com.

1.17pm A nearby area is being evacuated with fears a second tank at the fertiliser plant may catch fire and explode. The tank is said to be intact at the moment, but authorities are preparing for a second emergency. 1.05pm An official from a local hospital has told CNN at least 40 patients have arrived for treatment following the explosion and many of the injuries are 'very serious'.

12.43pm CNN reports a triage station has been set up near the site of the explosion, with local hospitals warned to expect 'hundreds' of casualties.

Authorities are reportedly going door-to-door to check on residents after several builidings were either destroyed or damaged. Emergency crews from surrounding areas have been called to the scene.

"We've got a lot of buildings on fire, we still have people trapped in an apartment building and possibly in a rest home," and emergency services operator said.

It is believed they were talking about the apartment building.

My husband and I were cleaning up the kitchen after supper, and heard what we thought was someone running into our house. It shook our windows and doors. We immediately ran outside looking for the worst, one witness told KWTX News.

Another witness, Gulf war veteran Paul L. Manigrasso told KWTX he felt the blast in Waxahachie.

Based on my Naval experience...we knew immediately what it was, but cannot believe it occurred 40 miles away, he said.

I don't know about you, but if I planted a bomb, I would leave before it detonated. UPDATE: DOJ is now saying there has been no arrest and there is no suspect.

In the wider view, it is clear this is after the bombing. But they are not helping the victims, nor searching for clues. Although dressed in uniform, they show no insignia at all, not even for police or fire department. And they seem to be wearing the same backpacks used to conceal the bombs.
