Ph302 TUTORIAL SHEET 1 1. Two coherent sources whose intensity ratio is 81:1 produce interference fringes .

Deduce the ratio of maximum to minimum intensity in fringe system. 2. Sodium light , = 5890 A , falls o a double slit of separation 2d =2.00 mm. The distance between slits and screen is 4 cm. Locate the position of tenth bright fringe assuming D>> d . 3. In a Fresnel biprism experiment the fringe width observed is 0. 08 mm. what it will become if the slit to biprism distance is reduced to of the original distance . 4. Calculate the separation between two coherent sources formed by a prism whose inclined faces make an angle of 20 with the base. The slit source being 10 cm away from the bi-prism , refractive index of prism = 1.5 5. A double slit of 0.05mm separation is illuminated bylight of blue cadmium line. How far behind the slits must one go to obtain the fringes that are 0.1cm apart. = 4800 A. 6. In double slit expt. using monochromatic light , the fringe pattern shifts by a certain distance on the screen when a mica sheet of refractive index 1.6 and thickness 1.964 micron in introduced in the path of one of the waves. The mica sheet is then removed and the distance between screen and slits is doubled. It is found that the distance between successive maxima ( or minima ) remains the same as earliar. Calculate the wavelength. 7. A thin layer of colorless clean oil ( refractive index =1.4 ) is spread over water in a container. The white light incident of the surface appears green after reflection . why ? If the light of wavelength 6400 A be absent in the reflected light , what should be thickness of oil layer? 8. White light falls perpendicularly upon a film of soapy water whose thickness is 5x10-5 cm and . Which wavelength will be reflected most strongly in the visible range. 9. Newtons rings are formed in the reflected light of wavelength 6000A with a liquid between plane and curved surfaces . If the diameter of the 6th bright ring be 3.1mm and radius of curvature of the curved surface be 1m, calculate the refractive index of the liquid. 10. When the movable mirror of Michelson interferometer is shifted by 0.03mm, the shift of 100 fringes is observed. Calculate . 11. A zone plate has a radius of first ring 0.05 cm. If plane wave of = 5000A falls on the plate, where should the screen be placed so that the light is focused on a bright spot. 12. Discuss the differences between a zone plate and a convex lens.

13. A plane transmission grating having 5000 lines per cm is being used under normal incidence of light. Answer the following questions : a) What is the longest wavelength for which spectrum can be seen. b) What is the highest order of spectrum that can be seen for = 6000A. c) The above mentioned spectral line in the second order overlaps with another spectral line in next higher order. Find this . 14. A plane transmission diffraction grating has 40,000 lines in all grating element 12.5x10-5 cm. Calculate the maximum resolving power for which it can be used. 15. Calculate the thickness of half plate for radium light given that 0 = 1.54 and the ratio of velocity of ordinary light to extraordinary light is = 1.007. Is the crystal positive . 16. How would you ascertain the correct state of polarization ( i.e circularly , elliptically , plane , unpolarized , mixture etc. ) of an incoming beam of light with the help rotating Nicol prism and a quarter wave plate ? Explain through a flow chart.
