Lesson Plan for Art Education Majors


Title: Geometric Greek Vases Grade 3 Description: Students will be learning about different types of ancient Greek Vases and there purpose, focusing on the Geometric style. They will be creating their own Geometric Greek Vase out of brown construction paper after learning about the different types of vases. They will creatively add geometric patterns to the vase using black marker. When finished, the vases will be displayed on a larger piece of construction paper and students will write what purpose their vase would be used for. Behavioral Objectives/Essential Questions: What are different types and purposes of Greek vases? What are geometric patterns? How do you create repetition using patterns? Pennsylvania State Academic Standards: 9.1.3.A: Know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works in the arts and humanities. 9.1.3.B: Recognize, know, use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in the arts. 9.2.3.A: Explain the historical, cultural and social context of an individual work in the arts. Modifications for Individual Differences: Special need students may use a template for their vase. Gifted/talented students are encourage to create their own type of Greek vase. Materials and/or Equipment: Promethean Board Brown construction paper Different color construction paper White index cards Black maker Scissors Pencils Anticipatory Set: Discuss the types and purpose of Greek vases and provide examples. Explain the use of patterns and repetition used on Geometric vases. Leave up examples students can use to make their own Greek vase and demonstrate how students will be creating them. Student Work Time: Step 1: Choose the type of Greek vase to make Step 2: Fold brown construction paper in half and draw half of the vase on the folded side Step 3: Cut out vase and open the paper to reveal a full vase Step 4: With pencil, begin making different patterns using repetition to fill the vase Step 5: Go over pencil with a black marker Step 6: Glue the vase on a different color construction paper for the background Step 7: Write out on sheet of paper what you would put in your vase to make it functional Step 8: Glue paper from Step 7 below the vase on the colored construction paper Closure: Students will be able to identify which type of vase they used and what they would use their vase for functionally Grading the student: Did students understand the different types of vases Did students create different patterns and repetition to make a Geometric style vase?
