JILL POWERS
JANUARY 9 - FEBUARY 3 EXHIBITION INFORMATION ARTIST STATEMENT
I love working on the edge of innovation, mingling centuries old papermaking and basketry traditions. The meditative experience of working for long hours with my hands in repeated motions gives way to the exhilaration of watching the form gain its incredible strength during the drying and stitching process.

SALLY STOCKHOLD
MARCH 6 - APRIL 8
ARTIST STATEMENT
Sally Stockholds current work is an ongoing photographic self-portrait series begun a few years ago. Stockhold is known for her outrageously funny, sometimes poignant, strikingly beautiful portraits in which she uses herself as the canvas to depict iconic females and some iconic males from history and fiction. Whether Stockholds subjects were famous, notorious, or capricious, her wish is to share with the viewer her experience of discovering and connecting with these iconic figures. When she creates each portrait, her intention is never to impersonate but rather to embody each person and to refer to their iconographic qualities. For Stockhold, these images are deeply personal and subjective. Her belief is that these photographs are never taken; instead, she prefers to think that these powerful people gave their images to her. With a background in painting, photography and film, Stockholds work is multi-layered. After distilling her knowledge and research of each iconic person into a conceptual image, she then paints life-size magical realism backdrops to enhance the perception of the individuals she intends to portray. With costumes, make-up, wigs and props assembled, lights positioned, the camera readied, the story begins...

WILLIAM STOEHR
JULY 3 - AUGUST 4 ARTIST STATEMENT
Just as Renaissance artists gained knowledge from medical investigations and then the Impressionists, Expressionists, Surrealists, Cubists and others mined medical and scientific sources, so now today I search for artistic potential in neuroscience. Starting with a vague or elusive expression and an uncertain context, I hope to provoke viewers into completing my portraits with their own experience and feelings. Ambiguity begets engagement and alternative interpretations or realities. I find that my paintings elicit questions concerning seduction, strength, resolve, confidence, violence and guilt simply by letting the viewer create the narrative. We are attracted to faces it is our nature. If I fill the canvas with a big face then there is little room for external leading context. The size and closely cropped image creates an elevated sense of intimacy. Searching for meaning, viewers may turn inward.
