Neysha Lopez ENC 3241 Dr. Powell January 31, 2013 Critical Analysis One Science is what we understand well enough to explain to a computer. Art is everything else we do Donald Knuth From writing hieroglyphics in caves to typing an email on a cellphone, human beings have always been interested in technology. Even at the beginning of times human beings have been curious to find out what they can do or invent with the limited resources available at that time. In the two readings this week about technology we can see that as time advance so does technology and our way of living. A big part of developing and finding new ideas is the way they are communicated, written, and shared through time. I believe that Daniel Lynch, the author of The Art of Digital Publishing: A foundation of combined standards to support the future of publishing", is a stronger communicator. This report is written in a good technical way. The sentences are short and easy to understand. Also, he uses simple syntax that any audience even if they were not teachers or students could understand. Daniel also uses different aids to prove his point like including citations from other authors and showing actual graphics to prove that technology could help students learn faster.

The article by Daniel Lynch is very effective in its organization and design principles. This report is arranged in chronological order and it explains how technology has advanced through time in short detail. This really helps the reader get a feeling of where the article is going and the point the author wants to share. After he sets the ground and tone for the article he goes on to explaining the principles of design. For example, Lynch explains how he can make a simple vector line in a computer program more complicated but easy to understand because it is interactive (31). When he explains this he shows different diagrams of how this looks in the computer; the diagrams help my mind visualize what the author is explaining. Jeffrey Terrace, the author of Content Conditioning and Distribution for Dynamic Virtual Worlds", has a better approach to cadence. If the observer were to render the world in all directions, the solid angle of an object would be roughly congruent to the number of pixels it takes up on the observers screen (Terrace 25). This is a good example of how this author uses cadence because the words are balanced and complement each other in the sentence. Also, when I read it out loud I can hear the rhythm in the words. Jeffrey Terrace is more successful using cadence; however, Daniel Lynch is more successful using syntax. New learning methods will accelerate education in a way that provides higher standards so that it catches up to technology. These new horizons will empower the future pioneers of science to explore new frontiers progressing from technology revolution and information exchange era we live today (Lynch 10). This example is great because it shows how the syntax is very clear and the relationship between the sentences is seen easily. Also, the sentences flow from one to another very easily. The writer of The Art of Digital Publishing: A foundation of combined standards to support the future of publishing" excels as a technical writer in many areas. He uses simple syntax and uses short paragraphs. He also places all his sentences in logical order in a way that it is easily

for me as a student (one of the targeted audiences) to follow. The writer of Content Conditioning and Distribution for Dynamic Virtual Worlds" excels in breaking down complex words and concepts. He explains what each concept is and repeats it later on the report to make sure we get the concept clearly. One recommendation for this writer would be to make his report sound more interesting. When I started reading the abstract I found it boring and monochromatic. As a technical reader in a company, when I read something it needs to catch my attention or if not I will move on to the next reading. The report on The Art of Digital Publishing: A foundation of combined standards to support the future of publishing is a better report. Overall, the tone, syntax, and organization of the author are better. He explains in detail the past and present history of technology. The he also presents how current technology can help students learn faster by making school lessons interactive. The language used by the author is simple to read and understand. Also, he uses pictures for the visual learners to understand better the concepts he is conveying. In my personal opinion I really enjoyed reading this article because it was interesting and easy to read. To conclude, achieving a readable style is very challenging for many writers because many of the subjects we try to explain are hard subjects to break down. In order to be successful as a technical writer the reports need to be simple and concise in order to keep their audience interested.
