Classroom Context and Knowing the Classroom

The Classroom itself plays a very large part in how well students will be able to learn and achieve. Upon arriving to my classroom, I walked through the halls of Whittaker Elementary. I immediately noticed how clean, well kept, and welcoming the school is. My mentor teacher, Mrs. Powell-Wades second grade classroom is located on first wing immediately upon exiting the main office. As I walked into Mrs. Powell-Wades second grade classroom, I immediately noticed how neat and well put everything was. Everything was neatly sorted and stored around the room. The students desks were placed in groups of five in the front of the class and four in the middle and back of the classroom. Mrs. Powell positioned the students desk in a way that promotes team work and team building skills. Each cluster of desk included both boys and girls. There are a total of fifteen boys and 11 girls. While her desk is located at the back of the classroom, she has set up a makeshift desk in the center of the class where she works and teaches from. This showed me that Mrs. Powell-Wade takes a student centered approached to teaching. Each subject along with an essential question was located on the dry erase board. This took up half of the space on the board. As I looked around the classroom, I noticed that no student work was displayed. However, there was a welcome back bulletin board located at the back of the

classroom. I found this interesting due to the classrooms student center atmosphere. A large cabinet is located at the front of the classroom. This is used for storage. There were also numerous tubs and storage containers located around thee classroom. Mrs. Powell-Wades classroom came equipped with a smart board, projector screen, lab top, and television. The overall concept of Mrs. Powell-Wades classroom promotes a student based atmosphere. The group seating and work station centered in the middle of the classroom proved that the teacher is focused on the students and wants each child to be actively involved in the lessons. However, what stood out to me was that there was no student work displayed around the classroom. For this to be a student centered classroom I expected to see student work and accomplishments displayed around the classroom. Whittaker Elementary school serves 616 students. Out of the total number of students 581 are African American, 18 are Hispanic, and 17 are Caucasian. Through the past three years Whittaker has improved on their schools report card. In 2009 they received an average in absolute rating and an average for growth. The following year the school saw improvement by receiving average in absolute rating but good for growth. In 2011 Whittaker saw the greatest improvement by receiving a rating of good for both their absolute and growth ratings.
