Standard: Explain how the destruction caused by the civil war affected the economy and

daily lives of South Carolinians, including scarcity of food, clothing and all essentials and the continuing racial tensions

Objective: Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the life South Carolinians

lived after the Civil War.

Students will be taught the effects of the Civil War on South Carolinians. I will teach

how the Civil Wars effected their essentials (food, clothing) and also the continuing racial tensions that took place in South Carolina

4.

The focusing activity will be the book, Fly Away Home. It tells the story of a young boy

and his father who are forced to live in an airport because of the death of his mother and his fathers unemployment. After reading the story we will discuss it as a class and relate it to the lives of South Carolinians after the Civil War.

The lesson will be taught through the use of a Prezi PowerPoint, as the lecture is being

given. The students will take notes with guided notes provided by the teacher.

In order to meet the needs of diverse students I will carry out the lecture using language

that is comprehendible for every student and I will provide guided notes to ensure that each student understands the key points. For students who still need assistance I will work one-on-one with them and also utilize students who have grasped the concepts as peer teachers

Students will be able to connect to this lesson because of its relevance to todays societ y.

By this age students have been exposed to or affected by the current economy. Students have experienced parents being laid off as well as other effects of the current economy. These aspects connect them to the lives of South Carolinians after the Civil War.

Materials used: book: Fly Away Home by: Eve Bunting, construction paper, pictures,

crayons. Resources: PowerPoint presentation created by the teacher. Technology: Smart board

Students will be assessed through the creation of their mock personal account of life after

the civil war. They will be given a mini rubric on key point to provide in their paragraph provided by the teacher and they will also provide a picture.

10.

Progress will be monitored through the use of a scoring rubric.

11.

Four students will be selected to share their paragraph and picture with the class. (10

mins) After the brief presentations two students will be selected to share what they have learned. (3-5 mins)
