Gerzina 1 Lindsey Gerzina ENC 3331- Thomas Wright Plan of Action April 17, 2013 The problem in my neighborhood

that I wish to address is the lack of recycling. Having just moved in, in January, it has been frustrating for me the not being able to do so. With this plan of action I hope to get in touch with my neighborhood about recycling. I also intend on creating awareness of the issue by posting flyers and attending the HOA (Home Owners Association) meeting. I will also talk to my neighbors that I see on a day to day basis and ask for their support on the issue. This may seem small and inconsequential but if done effectively I can make a big impact. Heres how. I will first start out by setting up flyers around the neighborhood. I will place them in areas that are in my neighbors daily routines and highly visited areas on property. I will post flyers near the mailboxes, main office, pool and gym. Between these few places I hope to attract at least a few of my neighbors attention to the issues so they know what is going on. When it comes to the content of what I will write on my flyer, I will keep it concise and to the point. It will notify them about the problem, concerning statistics, why they should care, my plan for the neighborhood, and how they can help. I will also use big font, bright colors and pictures to grab their attention, so they will instantly know what is going on. I have my flyer printed and on a separate page. After the flyer is set out I will attend the HOA board meeting and present my proposal for recycling in the neighborhood. While presenting I will touch on the facts and statics that I have gathered and put in my analysis paper. These facts will prove the importance of recycling and

Gerzina 2 that we should do our part and start recycling. I will also share the research I have done on the prices of the local recycling industries. I will proceed by notifying them that it will bump up everyones HOA fees by only a few dollars, so it will not be a huge finical burden for people. I will display charts that visually show the audience how much the cost of recycling will really affect our HOA fees. I will also have on hand, papers to distribute with the sources where I got my information and prices; that way they can check my research. During my proposition to the HOA, I hope to create a strong ethos with my knowledge about the topic and have the ability to answer any questions that fellow neighbors or HOA members may have. I also hope to appeal to their pathos by having them connect with my stories and message about how important that recycling really is. I feel that my speech to the HOA is a perfect example of kairos as well. By talking to my HOA, I am taking the opportune moment to get the attention of the most influential people in my neighborhood. I am able to really impact my project by letting them know then. In the pages following, I have attached some speaking notes that I have put together that I plan on using when presenting the idea of recycling to the HOA. If the HOA does not respond to my flyer or presentation, I will start a petition in the neighborhood. I will ask the neighbors that did call in and neighbors that I have spoken to about recycling, to help me knock on other residents doors to help raise awareness on the issue. The petition will get a majority of the residents to agree to the terms of higher HOA fees for recycling in the neighborhood. When this is done I will present the names to the HOA requesting the placement of recycling bins in the neighborhood. I chose the flyers and the speech to the HOA as my rhetorical devices because I am dealing with a community that does not have much in common. Residents of Waterford Landing are college students, recent graduates, parents, grandparents and children. To get my message

Gerzina 3 across to them effectively and to as many people as possible I chose the flyers. Flyers allow people to get a quick glimpse of the problem and they give them recourses to get more information about what I am trying to do. The speech I have prepared, allows me to go into detail about the subject. It also allows me to talk to influential people in the neighborhood that absolutely must know about the idea before it can be implemented. I feel as though, between these two mediums, I will be able to effectively get across to my targeted audience and be able to start a recycling program in my neighborhood. With this plan of action I hope to get across to members of my neighborhood and the HOA in a positive way. With these steps, I plan on having recycling in my neighborhood by early June. Between the flyer, HOA meeting and the petition; I only plan for success. It seems highly likely that my neighbors will see eye to eye with me on this situation. If not I will keep attacking this problem from a different angle and keep bringing my recyclables on campus until we do.
