Mastering Geomechanics & Tectonic Aspects in Hydrocarbon Exploration

6 - 9 May 2013 Grand Millenium Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Course Overview
For this course the participants are expected to have a working knowledge in the eld of exploration and production geology. Basic structural geology knowledge is an advantage. Basic structural interpretation skills will be discussed for each tectonic regime. This practical oriented course is intended for geologists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers and petrophysicists working in exploration and production of hydrocarbons. Having followed the course, the participants will be able to do geo-mechanically correct structural interpretations, understand natural fracture networks, including the formation of conduits (open fractures) and seals (sealing fractures and faults) in different tectonic regimes. The participants will be introduced to the main elements of structural petroleum geology and geo-mechanics, which will serve as a basis for an integrated geological approach. Examples can never give a complete picture, whereas the generic geo-mechanical approach presented in this course is universally applicable. Case histories still provide good illustration material it helps understanding the mechanics and will also be used extensively. Participants are encouraged to bring actual cases of their current work to the workshop for general discussion and integrated hands-on problem solving during the workshop. Especially seismic examples are welcome fresh additions to the workshop material and help to focus the direction of the workshop on current on-going projects and ongoing problems of the participants. A portable sandbox will be used for demonstration analogue modeling of the main tectonic regimes. The course schedule is tentative and exible, as interaction and discussion is given a high priority in this workshop. Hands-on exercises form an integral part of the course.

Mastering Geomechanics & Tectonic Aspects in Hydrocarbon Exploration

6 - 9 May 2013 Grand Millenium Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

PROGRAM OUTLINE : DAY 01

Introduction: to petroleum systems The role of structures in petroleum systems In order to create a common ground in the group, the rst day will also contain general aspects of the application of structural geology and geo-mechanics in the E&P business. Introduction to stress and strain, some rock mechanics and the application of this subject to general geological phenomena as encountered in the oil and gas business. Excersize on geomechanics Extensional tectonics: rifts, deltas, domes and associated sedimentation patterns.

Introduction to petroleum systems includes the formation, migration and trapping of hydrocarbons. Trapping of HCs will be treated with a focus on structural trapping by structural geometries and faults. Geomechanics is a very powerful science that has a wide range of applications, ranging from structural seismic interpretation to assessing reservoir integrity, fault stability and potentially induced earthquakes. The introductory presentations will be supplemented by an exercise that will build up during the course. The exercise starts with derivation of the basic geomechanical concepts and moves into application of these concepts to all aspects of structural interpretation and modeling. Structural interpretation will be placed in a geomechanical framework to avoid mechanically incorrect and consequently impossible interpretations. This included the structural geometry and also the kinematics of structures. The geomechanical information that is contained in structural history and geometry is a much ignored valuable source of information. The mechanics of natural fracture systems, prediction of location and orientation of open fractures including open fractures in oil bearing basement and potential maximum depth of open fractures. Wedging open of faults by high uid or gas pressures will also be treated. Faults and fractures form fractal systems. Fractals and their relation to petroleum geology will be treated. Extensional tectonics is the rst of the three major tectonic regimes. It will be treated with case histories and a live analogue model that also will be used to deduce geomechanical properties. Although the system is relatively simple, some complex aspects can result in difcult cases, which will be discussed with case history examples. Wedging open of faults due to high uid or gas pressures will be discussed in various contexts such as exploration (can a particular fault be a seal and how high is the HC column that can be held by this fault; High much pressure is required to make a hydraulic fracture and is there a risk of wedging open a nearby fault; can production induce earthquakes along faults in a reservoirs. Exercises will be given on these topics (time permitting).

PROGRAM OUTLINE : DAY 02

Theory, examples, analogue models, structural geometries and fault properties that are characteristic for extensional tectonic regimes will be treated during the morning session of day-2. Structural reservoir types and fault sealing mechanisms will be part of the material. The fractal nature of fractures and fault systems will be discussed. Introduction to strike-slip tectonics. Theory, case history, analogue models, seismic interpretation. Structural geometries and fault properties that are characteristic for strike-slip tectonic regimes will be treated. Structural reservoir types, in-situ stress analysis and fault sealing mechanisms (also in sand-sand juxtapositions) will be part of the material. The 3D nature of this tectonic setting including pitfalls and traps in structural interpretation will receive special attention. Exercise based on sandbox demonstration experiment.

Day 2 will be on theory, case history, analogue models and seismic interpretation. Structural geometries and fault properties that are characteristic for extensional tectonic regimes will be treated. Structural reservoir types, in-situ stress analysis and fault sealing mechanisms (also in sand-sand juxtapositions) will be part of the material. The 3D nature of this tectonic setting including pitfalls and traps in structural interpretation will receive special attention. Strike-slip is a complex tectonic regime with unusual 3D structural geometries and stresses. This will be explained by using case history examples and unique live sandbox analogue modeling with associated exercise. Seismic case examples will be used to illustrate interpretation issues. The 3D aspect of strike-slip will receive special attention. The sequence of formation of different fault types associated with strike-slip will be treated in detail integrated with the geomechanical aspects. Fault sealing by clay-smear will be explained geomechanically and with a case history. A video example handout material of 3D analogue models will be given to the participants.

Mastering Geomechanics & Tectonic Aspects in Hydrocarbon Exploration

6 - 9 May 2013 Grand Millenium Kuala Lumpur

PROGRAM OUTLINE : DAY 03

Compressional tectonics: fold-and-thrust belts Compressional tectonics: fault reactivation multi-phase tectonics. Theory, case histories, analogue models, seismic interpretation exercise. Structural geometries and fault properties that are characteristic for compressional tectonic regimes will be treated during the morning of day-3. Structural reservoir types and fault sealing mechanisms will be part of the material. During the afternoon session the mechanics of fault reactivation (inversion tectonics) will be discussed. Pore pressure prediction and overpressure generation mechanisms

The stresses in compressional systems are much higher than in the other tectonic regimes. This has consequences for deformation mechanisms and pore-pressure development. Reverse reactivation forms an important part of compressional tectonics. There is much misunderstanding about inversion tectonics. Strictly speaking inversion does not exist (John Ramsey). This important topic will be treated in depth. It forms part of a state of the art paleo stress analysis technique and geomechanical fault seal prediction. The fault seal prediction method is the most advanced available method and the most reliable, proven in practice. Exercises will be used to support a sound understanding of this advanced geomechanical method. No other Institution, university or major company can offer this valuable technique.

PROGRAM OUTLINE : DAY 04

Salt tectonics, diapirism and associated structures. Interpretation exercise. Fault sealing and top seal integrity. Aspects of salt-tectonics will be discussed. Examples from the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, interpretation exercise. The afternoon session will be used to discuss fault sealing mechanisms and approaches to evaluate top seal integrity in exploration and in production scenarios. Fracture systems: fracture mechanics, reservoir examples and outcrop examples Analysis of fault and fracture systems, including fractal properties of fault and fractures and prediction of subseismic faults. Theory, case histories, analogue models. The afternoon session will be used to discuss fracture mechanics, fracture types, natural fracture systems and their inuence on reservoir characteristics and production strategies.

Diapirism can be associated with salt or clay. Similarities and differences will be treated with examples and explained with rock mechanical material properties. Salt can be injected downward into a fault zone; the mechanics of this will be treated. Prediction of the location and orientation of open fractures will be discussed and explained with mechanics and case histories. Included will be conventional fracture systems in sedimentary reservoirs as well as geomechanical approach to the prediction of open fractures in granitic basement rock. Fracture prediction based on fractal properties of fractures and faults will be presented with theory and examples. The basement fracture prediction will be explained with the worlds rst successful prediction of such fractures in a granite reservoir.
