Draft Worksheet for Cover Letters and Resumes

Use the following questions to structure your review. Answer the entire set of questions twice once for each job the writer is applying for. Take your time as you review; work slowly and carefully. Be sure to ask these very review questions of your own package as you draft your final version.

Review questions for resumes: 1. Does the resumes content seem appropriate for the job ad? If yes, how so? If not, how might the author adjust the resumes content to better fit the ad? For the most part yes. I included a suggestion that you may want to make this resume slightly more general as the Nike internship ad is not a specific position, and actually lays out several areas where you could be placed. 2. Does the resume include the language (keywords, terms, etc.) from the job ad? Identify both places where it echoes the ad and places where it should echo the ad. You did a great job detailing your activities which I think is very relevant. They make several mentions of athlete in the ad and you made it obvious that you participate in a lot of athletics. You might want to consider using the words exceptional, motivated, and innovative. They use these in the ad and it would probably fit in the statement above the Education section. 3. How is the resume organized? You should be able to identify both logical and rhetorical organizing patterns. (Remember the difference? Logical patterns rely on basic organizations like chronology; rhetorical pattern are more strategic, highlighting the most important elements of the resume.) The organization of your resume is perfect. Considering Nike has a lot of foundation at Penn State (one of the founders), your emphasis on Penn state first is good. The only change I would make is to emphasize study abroad over courses and technical skills. Nike is a global company and would value this. The general nature of the internship means you probably dont need as much attention on the engineering discipline. Honors and activities are next and I believe this is more important given that Nike is an athletes company. This should be next as opposed to work experience which you correctly did. 4. How are the design elements appropriate for the audiences needs, attitudes, and purposes? How does the design accommodate multiple audiences? The design is professional, flowing and easy to read. You provided description for your job that people may not know which makes it understandable for multiple audiences. The initial statement is very clear and tells anyone reading it exactly what your goal is.

5. Look at issues of style. How does the writer employ language? For example, are the descriptions of job experience worded using action verbs? Are bulleted lists worded in parallel form? Is the resume free from errors in grammar, spelling, typography, and punctuation? Does the wording lend an appropriate ethos to the jobseeker? What overall impression do you have of this job candidate as a writer, based on the resume? Recall that your first communication with an employer will be through your writing. All of your descriptions are in action verb form. You used professional language throughout ( I suggested 2 small changes). The other typo was an unneeded bullet at the end of the page. Otherwise I get a very professional impression of the writer. You detail each aspect and make it clear that you have challenged yourself and gained lots of experience throughout your college career.

Review questions for cover letters: 1. Who is the letter addressed to? Is this an appropriate audience? Why? How do the contents of the letter address the readers concerns? In other words, does it show how the jobseeker can contribute to the company? Does it draw upon research about the company? It is addressed to Nike Internship Coordinator. I would imagine this is appropriate because given Nikes size, they would have specific roles like this. To whom it may concern would also be appropriate. You mention the descriptors of a good candidate directly from the ad which would address any concerns that a reader may have. You might want to add some small fact in about Nike rather than just great company. Even alluding to their business culture would show that you know a little bit about them. 2. What concrete evidence does the body of the letter provide to support its claims? You detailed your experience as an engineering student at Penn State, which I think effective emphasizes your work ethic. You may want to add a small example of your innovativeness, since that seems important to Nike 3. How does the introduction grab the readers attention and establish why the applicant is qualified for the job? How is the body of the letter organized, and does the first paragraph clearly forecast that organization? How does the letter end, and is this ending effective? You mention Penn State and that you wanted to be an intern at Nike which tells them right away what your goal is. The organization is good with experiences next and then a review of why you are a good candidate. I might add in a statement such as I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you rather than propel me above the other qualified candidates for the internship 4. Look at issues of style. How does the writer employ language? How does the writer use tone? How does the writer make a persuasive case for their job candidacy? How do they create an ethos that is confident, but not arrogant or pushy? Is the letter free from errors in grammar, spelling, typography, and punctuation? What overall impression do you have of this job candidate as a writer, based on the letter?

There were a few areas where you could clean up your sentences to make them flow more smoothly. I also suggested that you eliminate some sentences that arent needed. There were no typos in your letter. I felt that with a few corrections, you would have a tone that conveys confidence and show your qualifications. 5. How is the letter formatted? Describe any deviations from conventional business letter format and make a judgment about whether these deviations are effective or not. The format is perfect. Draft Worksheet for Cover Memos

Use the following questions to structure your review. The cover memo is a particularly important part of this assignment because it gives you an opportunity to explain the choices you made in your cover letters and resumes and assists with the overall goal of developing a vocabulary for talking about what you do as a writer. Take your time as you review. Be sure to ask these very review questions of your own package as you draft your final version. 1. Will this memo help the instructor understand the rhetorical choices the writer made in designing the cover letter and resume? Why or why not? Yes. You explained everything very clearly and showed why these were organized the way they are.

2. Do the job descriptions expand on what is given in the job ad itself? That is, rather than cutting and pasting the job ad, does the writer interpret the job ad and what the terms mean for a successful application? Yes. You showed that you know what it takes to achieve the postion and showed that you interpreted the job add effectively.

3. How does the audience analysis prove that the writer has done his/her research? That is, what concrete evidence does it use to describe the nature of the position and company? You showed that you know that Nike is large enough to have an extensive HR department.

4. What rationales does the rhetorical analysis section provide for elements such as organization, design and layout, style and tone, and contents for both the resume and the cover letter? He relates the requirements of the ad to the reasons he organized the application the way he did. 5. Does the memo follow standard formatting conventions for a memo report? Is the memo free from errors in grammar and punctuation?

Yes. Name of reviewer: Chad Fisher Name of letter and resume author: Ryan Rooney

Use the following questions to structure your review. Answer the entire set of questions twice once for each job the writer is applying for. Take your time as you review; work slowly and carefully. Be sure to ask these very review questions of your own package as you draft your final version.

Review questions for resumes: 6. Does the resumes content seem appropriate for the job ad? If yes, how so? If not, how might the author adjust the resumes content to better fit the ad? Yes. You included a lot about your engineering degree while also emphasizing your experience in customer service. You seemed to grasp what the ad was looking for. 7. Does the resume include the language (keywords, terms, etc.) from the job ad? Identify both places where it echoes the ad and places where it should echo the ad. There are a few places you could add words from the ad. They talk of a technical sales position. They also emphasize competitiveness which you were very good about in your Nike resume and cover letter. Consider using these words in your objective statement above the education section. 8. How is the resume organized? You should be able to identify both logical and rhetorical organizing patterns. (Remember the difference? Logical patterns rely on basic organizations like chronology; rhetorical pattern are more strategic, highlighting the most important elements of the resume.) It was organized in a skills type resume. You organized your sections well. The most important being your engineering education followed by any type of customer service experience. 9. How are the design elements appropriate for the audiences needs, attitudes, and purposes? How does the design accommodate multiple audiences? With a sales internship, they will immediately look to make sure you have some kind of customer service experience, then they will view the rest of your resume. You identified your qualities in the opening statement and then detailed them very well in your job experience section. They will also be impressed by the types of classes you have. I think this would suit any person who may view your application at Tozour. 10. Look at issues of style. How does the writer employ language? For example, are the descriptions of job experience worded using action verbs? Are bulleted lists worded in parallel form? Is the resume free from errors in grammar, spelling, typography, and

punctuation? Does the wording lend an appropriate ethos to the jobseeker? What overall impression do you have of this job candidate as a writer, based on the resume? Recall that your first communication with an employer will be through your writing. All your experience uses action verbs. I saw no typos in this resume. Your opening statement is strong and the descriptions show your valuable experiences. The resume is a very professional style.

Review questions for cover letters: 6. Who is the letter addressed to? Is this an appropriate audience? Why? How do the contents of the letter address the readers concerns? In other words, does it show how the jobseeker can contribute to the company? Does it draw upon research about the company? It is addressed to Lauren Schmitz. Im guessing this is an HR rep which shows you have either researched exactly who you will be speaking to or you have talked to someone. This lends to your knowledge of the company. You did a very good job telling them that you are very versed in customer service and you possess the personality it takes to be in sales. That would probably be one of the biggest concerns given the types of activities they are going to have you do. You might consider adding a quick fact to show you researched the company. 7. What concrete evidence does the body of the letter provide to support its claims? You used your class experience at previous jobs and your involvement to support your knowledge. You emphasize your competitiveness through the sports you participated in. 8. How does the introduction grab the readers attention and establish why the applicant is qualified for the job? How is the body of the letter organized, and does the first paragraph clearly forecast that organization? How does the letter end, and is this ending effective? You did a good job explaining why you are qualified. I suggest saying how you heard of their internship to lead off. The body explains your experience at penn state and effectively outlines your fitness for the position. The ending is very effective. 9. You had just a few areas where you could smooth it out. Otherwise your style and tone is very professional. You detailed your qualifications and gave good examples. You came off as confident without being arrogant. I would have a great impression overall. 10. How is the letter formatted? Describe any deviations from conventional business letter format and make a judgment about whether these deviations are effective or not. It is formatted in a business letter format. Sean Rooney To: Professor Mclaughlin 2/5/13 Job Application Cover Memo NIKE Summer Internship: Job Description The first job ad posted above is for a summer internship with the renowned sports products manufacturing company, NIKE. The internship would take place at its headquarters in Portland, Oregon and would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for a sports obsessed engineer such as myself. While interning, I would receive all the employee benefits such as access to all the high class facilities, along with employee discounts on all merchandise, making this opportunity even sweeter. In order to even be considered for this internship, there are several requirements. First off, every applicant must have at least a GPA of 3.3, as well as be willing to relocate, considering this internship is only offered in Portland. However, that is just the start of the application requirement. Considering NIKE is at the top of the sports manufacturing industry, they only select the best of the best. It will be necessary to portray my innovativeness and drive throughout my resume and cover letter to even be considered. Audience Analysis Bearing in mind the size of NIKEs corporation, there is no doubt that NIKE has their own individual human resources department solely for the companys internship applications. Knowing this, I must realize that these employees are in charge of over 16,000 summer internship applications every single year. The competition for such an internship is unimaginable, therefore making every word in my cover letter and resume important. One slip up and my application will be disregarded without any second thoughts. Showing the HR department my knowledge of the company, devotion to sports, innovativeness, and drive will be essential. Rhetorical Analysis In NIKEs job ad, they make it very obvious the reason to their success is the unique qualities of their employees. The word I noticed they reiterated throughout the ad is innovative. NIKE believes the only way they are able to stay ahead of their competitors is by innovation. Therefore, it is my responsibility to prove to NIKE that my innovative personality is exactly what theyre looking for. In order to appeal to the desires NIKE looks for in an employee, the order of my resume will be very important. It is vital I highlight my competitiveness, understanding and love of sports, and engineering degree from one of the top engineering schools in the country, Penn State. Although this internship isnt only for engineers I still think my engineering degree will be helpful. I will put my education first as result of having no prior relevant experience. As for the classes I list, I will want to eliminate any basic engineering classes for the reason that they will not help me stick out from the rest of the candidates. After presenting my relative classes, I also

think it will be important to highlight my studying abroad experience in Spain. Not only will this show NIKE that I am familiar with the Spanish language, but it will also show I am open to new experiences and cultures. Thats important for NIKE to realize in an applicant because NIKE is a worldwide corporation. Then I will put my skills and honors, showing previous sports and scholar achievements. Lastly will be my previous work experience because it does not relate to engineering but I will still want to show I am a hard-working, loyal, employee. Personally, I think the cover letter for the NIKE summer internship application is the most important part because this is my chance to relate to the hiring managers on a personal level and distinguish myself from the other candidates. The approach I will take when writing the cover letter is showing NIKE how I have taken my competitiveness from a sports background and now apply it to school. This will prove to them that in the future I will use this same competitive nature in my future career. I also think it is important to show NIKE that I do have a passion and understanding for sports because I think that is crucial when the companys goal is innovating sports products. Tozour Energy Systems Summer Internship: Job Description The second job ad listed above is for a much smaller company called Tozour Energy Systems. It is for a summer sales engineering internship. With this internship, I would be working with sales engineers that are currently working for the company. I would be listening in on calls, learning about their HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, and working with the sales teams on projects. Audience Analysis Tozour bought the Philadelphia site from the partner company, Trane, about thirty years ago. Since then, Tozour has grown by over 150 employees which tells me two things: they are a local, family oriented company but at the same time growing bigger and bigger every year. The HR manager, Lauren Schmitz, is the one who will be looking over my cover letter and resume. She has informed me that they are looking for someone interested in sales but with an engineering degree. This combination is important because sales reps need to be personable and effective communicators, while the engineering degree will come in handy when it is necessary to get technical about the HVAC systems. She also mentioned classes such as Fluid Flow and Thermodynamics are important when working with HVAC systems. Rhetorical Analysis For a sales engineering resume, I will want to have a different approach. I will still start my resume with my engineering degree from Penn State because that is the main requirement for this internship. I will re-order my relevant classes putting the classes that Lauren told me were important for HVAC systems, along with my technical writing class because that is also important when working in sales. Next, I will want to show my previous work experience. Although I have no experience in accordance to sales engineering, I still believe it is important that they see I have had a job that involves interaction with customers because involvement with customers is significant when working in sales. Lastly I will put my skills and honors. Although they will be last, I still think are important to have. These will show my competitiveness and leadership through sports; necessary qualities for sales, yet rare qualities for engineers.

With regard to my cover letter, I will definitely want to make note of my relevant classes such as Thermodynamics and Fluid Flow, along with my engineering degree from Penn State. In addition, sales engineers need to have an attitude that most engineers lack. That attitude is competitiveness. This personality, along with being able to effectively communicate in a personable way are the qualities I will want Tozour to know that I have after reading my cover letter. Lastly, I will want to exhibit an interest in HVAC systems knowing that this is the companys main focus.

I am very interested in the NIKE once in a lifetime internship opportunity during the upcoming summer of 2013, at your headquarters in Oregon. While researching opportunities in the field of engineering, I discovered that Nike provided student interns with the rare chance to explore a great company. My affinity for sports, my drive to succeed, and Nikes innovative product line made this seem like a perfect fit. Ever since I could walk, sports have not only been a hobby, but a lifestyle. Whether it was basketball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, or swimming, my passion for sports could not be quenched. Now, as I progress through my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ive carried the same passion over to academics. I am at one of the top engineering universities in the country and have met the intense scholastic challenge. From day one, Penn State has challenged all of its engineering students to have a creative and innovative mindset. To be successful, the professors demand academic excellence, but there is a challenge and there is a price. The price is pressure and stress while the challenge is to effectively manage the two bi-products of academic success. I feel as if I have embraced the challenge and excelled on all levels. When I graduate in the spring of 2014, the game will just be starting, but I will be prepared. I couldnt imagine a better opportunity than to combine my engineering degree with my lifes love. I believe that my combination of competitiveness, innovativeness, proven work ethic, and understanding and love of sports will propel me into your considerations for this summer internship. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Sean Rooney

I am interested in your sales engineering internship this summer 2013, located at your King of Prussia headquarters. While researching opportunities in the field of engineering, I discovered that the sales side seemed like the perfect fit to my unique personality. I believe the drive to succeed that I have acquired throughout a life of playing competitive sports, along with my unmatched work ethic and outgoing personality are what separate me from the average engineer and therefore give me an advantage as a potential candidate for the sales engineering position. While studying at one of the top engineering schools in the country, I feel that the concepts I have learned in classes such as Thermodynamics, Fluid Flow, Vibrations, and Technical Writing would be invaluable to your company. The first three classes go hand in hand with your companies focus on HVAC systems. In order to understand HVAC systems and be able to participate in their sales, I must first be able to understand the concepts behind the design of such systems. The latter, Technical Writing, would also benefit the sales side of the internship. As a sales engineer, communication is just as important as knowledge so I believe that the skills I have gained in these courses have given me the necessary preparation for an HVAC sales engineering internship. Ultimately, I couldnt imagine a better opportunity than to combine my engineering degree with my unique personality that includes the ability to be competitive but likeable at the same time. My combination of competitiveness, innovativeness, proven work ethic, and sociability would make me very successful at Tozour Energy Systems. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Sean Rooney
