Introduction
Reacts with sulphuric acid according to the following equation: + In this experiment, a quantity of + + solution is titrated with a standard solution of
using methyl orange as the indicator to detect the end point of titration. From the titration data, the molarities of the hydrated sodium carbonate can be calculated using the relationship.
Its molar mass can be then obtained using the relationship. Concentration in g/dm = molarity X molar mass
Apparatus Burette Pipette 2 Beaker - 3 conical flask - Retort stand - White tile
Procedure 1. A burette was washed with tap water and rinsed with distilled water.the burette was rinsed atleast twice with the dilute and then the acid was discarded.
2. The burette was completely filled with the acid and air bubbles were removed from the tip by running some of the acid into an empty beaker. 3. A pipette was washed with tap water and rinsed with distilled water. The pipette was rinsed atleast twice with the 4. 20 cm of solution and the solution was discarded.
orange was added and the colour of the solution was recorded. 5. The conical flask was placed below the burette with the tip of the burette just inside the flask. A white tile was placed under the conical flask. 6. The initial burette reading was recorded. The acid was slowly runned into the flask, and was continuously swirling the flask to ensure complete mixing of the two solutions. 7. When the colour of the solution changed to orange, the titration was stopped immediately. The final burette reading was recorded. 8. Steps 3 to 7 was repeated atleast twice and the data was tabulated.
Results Titration number Final burette reading Initial burette reading Volume of used 1 15.00 0.00 15.00 2 30.5 15.00 15.5 3 45.6 30.5 15.1
The colour of the methyl orange indicator changes from orange to light red.

2. Based on your answer in 1(c), give the actual symbol of X and then write the ionic formulae if the element X combined with,
From the calculation X is 35.79, and 35.79 is almost close to 35.45 which is calcium refer to periodic table.
a) Nitrate = ( )
b) Sulphate =
c) Chloride
d) Hydroxide ( )
Conclusion The relatives atomic mass of element X can be determined. The relative atomic mass of X is 35.79 from the calculation that I calculated. The RAM 35.79 almost closed to the RAM 35.45 from the periodic table. The RAM 35.45 is calcium.
