W
hen I visited Purradise on March
20, it was, in part, a senior living
communityof cats, that is. But in fe-
line terms, they were all simply mature
adults, not old. Nowhere near.
A seven-year-old cat, strangely con-
sidered senior by shelters, vets, and
the pet food industry, actually corre-
sponds to just age 46 in human terms.
So lets be fair and say middle-
aged...or even just plain grown-up.
After age seven, the years match up
roughly as follows, cats to people: 8/50,
13/70, 15/75, 20/90...and if you are re-
ally going for the long stretch, the old-
est cat ever, according to Guinness
World Records, was a little lady named
Creme Puff, who went completely off
the charts at age 38 (in cat years, mind).
Now THATS what I call old.
Of course, kittens are adorable and
adolescents can be entertaining, but
there can be advantages to adopting
adult cats. Particularly if they have al-
ready lived all or many of their years in
another home, they have a basic under-
standing of household routines and of
the ropes of cross-species body and
vocal language; also, they may have fi-
nally gotten past the bounce-off-the-
w a l l s a n d
ooh-what-happens-if-I-do-that? phase
of some youngsters (which phase my
four-year-olds are still in...!). Perhaps
most important, if they have lost their
special human due to any number of
possible circumstances, they may miss
their former bond acutely and therefore
may be incredibly appreciative of
forging a new, lasting relationship
with you.
Like people, cats of a certain age are
only retiring if they choose to be. Al-
though nine-year-old Ace preferred to
snooze that afternoon on top of the
highest kitty tree, his twin Missy spent
my visit greeting whoever entered the
Sunshine Spa and showing off her cat-
tree-climbing skills. Across Purradise
in the gift shop area, 10-year-old black
and white Kringle proved an enthusias-
tic head rubber and finger nibbler (both,
in cat body lingo, a kind of kiss...and,
hey, wed only just met!)
Back in the spa, 11-year-old, beauti-
fully marked tortie Cinders, whose or-
angey fur is flashed here and there with
golden streaks, has been waiting pa-
tiently for her prince (or fairy god-
mother) to come. During my time in
and out of that room, she garnered
some three or four lap sessions in all,
purring louder and louder each time, al-
ternating with patrolling the spas new
screen door to keep an eye on staffers
Tracy and Danielle. Alert? check. Ac-
tive? check. Affectionate? check.
And lets add affordable...no need for a
check! Purradise, as well as its
mother shelter, Berkshire Humane
Society in Pittsfield, is offering a spe-
cial deal, with no foreseeable cutoff
date: seniors (in people terms) can
adopt a senior cat (seven years plus, in
feline terms) for FREE. Yes, youve
read that right. And if you arent yet a
senior yourself, you can still enjoy
savings: a 50 percent discount if the cat
of your dreams is age seven or older.
Either way, you are likely to have a ball
together for as many as several
decades...without your precious pets
turning into a pumpkin at the stroke of
some artificial age ceiling.

feline bond at Purradise, the Berkshire

This year, Humane Race founders
Alix and Brian Cabral are stepping
down as directors and handing if off to
new race Directors, Christa Abel and
Dawn Catelotti, the proprietors of Bark
NCat in North Adams. (www.barkn-
cat.com). After ten years of putting
our hearts and souls into creating a
great event that raises much needed
funds for the Berkshire Humane Soci-
ety, $120,000 and counting, it is time to
hand over the reins. Christa, Dawn and
their team bring fresh ideas and lots of
energy to the event and are committed
to making the Humane Race better than
ever! We hope you will support them
as you have us because, as always, all

traordinary, and vitally important Berk-
shire Humane Society, said former
Director Alix Cabral, and wed like to
thank all of our supporters throughout
the years from the 60 people who came
to the first race in 2003 to the almost
400 who showed up last year. We had

Animal Lifer April 2013 5
6 Animal Life rApril 2013
Yoanna Y. Matre, DVM, DABVP
hoof beat
S
pring has sprung, and all over the
county there are baby animals com-
ing into the world. The act of giving
birth has many different names in the
animal world: in cows its called calv-
ing, its lambing in sheep, kidding for
goats, and foaling in horses. How
about llamas and alpacas? Well, the ba-
bies are called crias, so Ive heard it re-
ferred to as criating.
If you have any of these creatures due
to deliver, its important to be prepared
for the time before, during, and after
delivery to avoid a veterinary emer-
gency. Pregnant animals should be
properly vaccinated and dewormed and
fed a high quality diet prior to giving birth
Heres a list of items to have
in your obstetrical kit:
Clean bucket for warm water
Disinfectant
(chlorhexidine or povidone iodine)
Lubricant
OB sleeve gloves
Chains or straps
Head snare
Strong iodine for dipping navels
Feeding tube and syringe
Other items (depending on which
species you are working with) may in-
clude Selenium injection, Penicillin,
Oxtocin, and CD&T vaccine. Some of
these are prescription items, so you will
want to have a discussion well in ad-
vance with your veterinarian to ensure
you know the proper indications and
dosing for each drug.
Signs of impending labor are a full
udder, waxing teats, restlessness, and
finally the fetus entering the birth canal
and a water bag showing at the vulva.
Once the water breaks and hard labor
begins, everything should progress
quite quickly. In horses, if the mare is
having strong contractions and the foal
is not on the ground in 20 minutes, call
your veterinarian immediately. In the
ruminant species, you have a little more
time, but progress should still be made
within one hour.
In all farm animals, the normal presen-
tation for the fetus is front feet first,
hooves facing down, with the nose and
head resting on the extended legs. You
are unlikely to do any damage by feel-
ing around inside as long as you have
clean and gentle hands and use lots of
lubrication. Some abnormalities you
may find are a backwards fetus (two
hind feet), a breech presentation (back-
wards with legs tucked forward), one or
both front legs back, or a head back.
Also, in sheep and goats it is not un-
usual to have twins and even triplets or
quads, so it is very important that even
when you are presented with a head and
two legs that they all belong to the
same baby! Do not apply traction until
you are absolutely sure, because things
can get very impacted as the uterus
contracts down around the fetuses en-
tering the birth canal.
Sometimes pulling on one leg and
then the other (rather than both at the
same time) will allow the shoulders to
pop through one at a time. Make sure
the head does not turn back as you are
pulling on the legs (this is where a head
snare can come in handy). Also, rotat-
ing the fetus as the hips come through
the dams pelvis can sometimes make
all the difference, since the pelvis is
wider up and down than side to side.
Other more serious problems are fail-
ure of the cervix to dilate, or a uterine
torsion (twisted uterus). If you are not
sure what you are feeling, or havent
made progress after 20 minutes, call
your veterinarian right away to deter-
mine whether the abnormality can be
corrected or if a Caesarean section may
be necessary.
Clip, Dip, Strip, and Sip
Once the baby is out, make sure you
clip the umbilical cord, dip it in strong
iodine, strip the dams teats to clear of
any plugs, and encourage nursing as
soon as possible. All farm animal new-
borns should be up and nursing within
two hours to ensure that they get ade-
quate quantities of colostrum; this is the
first milk that contains antibodies criti-
cal for immune protection.
Passing the Placenta
Again, horses have a critically
shorter time here and are at risk
for developing life threatening
infections or laminitis if the
placenta is not passed in its en-
tirety within 2 hours. In goats,
sheep and cows it may take 4-6
hours, and intervention is not
usually needed until it has been
12-24 hours. Sometimes the
membranes may just be resting
on the pelvic brim like a wet
dish towel on a rack, and all
that is needed is a gentle tug
with disinfected hands. How-
ever, if the membranes begin to
tear or feel stuck, stop pulling
right away.

erinary Services, a mobile

Just Kidding Around
Animal Lifer April 2013 7
W
hen Tawnya Underhill gave
away her dog Cash, it wasn't be-
cause she wanted to. It was because all
of the issues in her life, including the
care of Cash, became too difficult to
handle. Tawyna, a quadriplegic, relies
on the help of others for her own care.
Thanks to her caregiver Albert
McAlvery, she is well taken care of in
her Dalton home. But Cash was a
handful of a dog to add to the rhythm
of personal care assistance. He sprayed
in the house, so he spent a lot of his
time outside, and he got loose often.
One time, in his exuberance, Cash
pulled out Tawyna's oxygen tube. It
took Cash a while to get to know peo-
ple, so his care was difficult for Albert
to manage when Tawyna needed to go
to Bay State Hospital in Boston. Albert
and Tawnya resigned themselves to
looking for another
home for Cash, and
they found a friend
who said they'd
take him in.
Just a few months
later, Tawyna, a
friend of Eleanor
Sonsini Animal
Shelter on Face-
book, saw a picture
of Cash available
for adoption at the
shelter. Tawyna
discovered that he
had gotten loose
from his new peo-
ple, and they had
decided not to keep
him. Tawyna and
Albert decided to
figure out if they
could make life
work with thedog.
After discussing the situation with Son-
sini staff, Tawyna decided to adopt him.
Cash was exuberant to see his old
friends and thrilled to get in the car and
go to his familiar home.
"Cash is a much calmer dog now that
he's been neutered," says Albert. "We
have a better routine, which includes
lots of outside time during the day but
plenty of inside time too. He doesn't
mark inside anymore. When he's out-
side, he enjoys hanging out in the
garage or lying on top of the doghouse
the Sonsini staff gave us. The staff also
gave us the phone number of a person
who could care for Cash if I have to
take Tawnya out of town for medical
care, so I'm not worried about that issue
anymore."
We couldn't be happier that Cash
found his way back home, and that
Tawyna found a way to keep her friend.

berkshire animal d.r.e.a.m.s
O
n a warm April evening, four of us
are walking around the remains of
a building slated for demolition some-
day. As children play in a nearby park,
and people sit on their front steps en-
joying the springtime sunset, we wend
through a maze of brambles, burdocks
and broken bottles until we reach the
shell of the building. Finding a hole in
the foundation, I bend down to peer in-
side with my flashlight, and am met by
a damp cold draft emanating from in-
side- earth and mold. It is probably 20
degrees colder inside the structure than
outside. While volunteers Blake and
Jasmine keep watch, our trapping coor-
dinator Melissa Tharion and I find an
opening large enough to slip through,
and gingerly make our way through the
ground floor of the structure, shining
light into every corner and hole in the
floors. This is home to several cats that
have no other place to live, and based
on the human belongings found in piles
around the space, it has also been uti-
lized by people for various purposes.
This place could be the poster child for
urban blight, and it is the sad reality on
almost every block in this area of Pitts-
field.
This Spring, we are here in the West
side and other targeted areas of Pitts-
field to humanely trap, neuter and re-
turn (TNR) up to 300 community cats
with the help of a matching grant from
PetSmart Charities. Community cats
fall into two categories: abandoned pet
cats that have been forced into the shad-
ows as they struggle to survive home-
lessness, and feral (wild) cats, those
offspring of abandoned pets who were
born outdoors and never had contact
with humans. Kittens who are not res-
cued by 3 months of age will be forever
wild-- and without spaying or neuter-
ing, they grow up to breed subsequent
generations of feral cats. One of our
goals is to interrupt that cycle.
Animal DREAMS Feline Rescue, lo-
cated at 441 North Street in Pittsfield,
is the only organization in the Berk-
shires actively devoted to helping com-
munity cats. These cats would
otherwise fall through the cracks
deemed unadoptable by animal shelters,
they are either rejected at the door, or
taken in and killed. Yet for those many
pets who were traumatized by being
dumped outdoors,
it can initially be
difficult to tell the
difference between
feral or merely
fearfulwe have
s u c c e s s f u l l y
adopted out hun-
dreds of loving cats
that just needed a
little time and nur-
turing to come
around again. (Be-
cause most cats are
abandoned because
of their reproduc-
tive behaviors, the
spaying and neuter-
ing of pet cats is
critical. Through
CatSNIP (spay/neuter initiative pro-
gram) affordable spay/neuter is avail-
able in Berkshire county. Todays
un-fixed pet may become tomorrows
homeless cat.)
Our mission at Animal DREAMS over
the last 13 years and 3500 cats is to hu-
manely reduce the numbers of cats
forced to live outdoors, through non-
lethal trap-neuter-return- TNR- while
respecting the dignity of all cats,
whether feral, fearful, or friendly.
Through spaying, neutering, vaccinat-
ing and veterinary care for all the cats
and kittens we rescue, their quality of
life increases
while the birth of
kittens stops, and
with time, the
numbers go
down. (We also
provide a critical
public health
service by hav-
ing every cat re-
ceive a rabies
vacci nat i on. )
Those feral cats
that are returned
to their home
colony continue
to be fed and
looked after by
volunteers, and
insulated sleep-
ing boxes are built for them, so that
they no longer have to shiver under
porches or in abandoned buildings.
On just one city block, which was the
first one we targeted with this grant, the
results were astounding: a total of 23
cats were trapped, of which 11 were fe-
male. By spaying them before the kit-
tens started coming, we prevented 38
kittens from being born. On just one
city block! After just one breeding
cycle, had we not intervened, the
colony would have almost tripled, to 61
cats! And in just the few weeks since
the cats were returned, neighbors have
already reported a noticeable decrease
in male cats fighting and spraying
urine, as the females no longer cycle in
and out of heat, with the cats looking
healthier as well. The cats still provide
rodent patrol, and the colony is now sta-
ble and healthy. Warm days, flowers,
birdsong, and happy cats. What a great
way to welcome springtime!

The Patron Saint of Dogs
Saint Roch, born in 1295 in Montpellier, France is the patron saint of
dogs. Born to wealth, Saint Roach gave up his noble title so that he
could go on a pilgrimage to Rome and care for plague victims. When
he contracted the plague himself, he retreated to a forest to suffer
alone, but a dog from a nearby manor house befriended Saint Roch,
brought him food, and licked his wounds. When Roch recovered, he
took the dog and went back to his home, but everyone had died. He
himself was so disfigured that he was thought to be an imposter and
was imprisoned. Saint Roach and his dog spent the rest of their lives
caring for other prisoners. Saint Roch died in 1327.

hen shopping for upholstery,
everyones first concern is color.
We often look for color based on our
personality, our surroundings or to
match a current chair or accent piece that
we already own. As pet parents, we
have another component to contend
with- fur! Fur can be so many colors,
textures and, lets face it- everywhere.
Particularly this time of year, many ani-
mals shed their winter coats. Let the fur
dictate your dcor and you will find that
it will compliment your whole family.
My 1st dog was a tri-color beagle.
Those sad sweet eyes and soft long ears
won my heart and it was love at first
sight. It wasnt until after the first
spring that I became aware of the furry
situation. Her fur was EVERY-
WHERE! Dark colors showed the
white hair and light colors showed the
black and brown hair. This time of
year, it was the worst! While I would
never trade her
for anything (in-
cluding a fur
free sofa) I had
to pick things
that either re-
pelled her hair
or hid it. I pur-
chased a leather
chair and ot-
toman and a
paisley printed
sofa. The
leather chair was easy to clean and the
hair didnt stick to it. The paisley on
the sofa disguised her hair with its mul-
ticolored swirls and twirls and the tight
weave made it hard for her coarse fur
to stick into the fabric. The look was
complete with an oriental style rug with
a symmetrical pattern that had all the
same black, brown and white in it. The
room was beautiful and I matched it to
my dog! The
fur was easy
to remove
and hard to
see.
1. Pick a color
for fabric that
has the same
value of light
or dark as the
fur in your
home.
2. Multicolor
or toned weaves can blend and hide fur that
varies with two or more colors of fur.
3. Patterns like floral, paisley and plaid can
disguise fur if you have dark, medium and
light fur in your household.
4. Pick a tighter weave or smooth texture
for short and coarse hair or pick a chunky
or textured fabric for fluffy or long hair.
While it seems ridiculous to pick your
pets by color alone, that same is not
true for furniture. You can pick a sofa
based on its color and fabric. There are
myriad fabrics, leathers and finishes to
choose from! Consider ALL the mem-
bers of your family and how it works
with the textures and colors of your
four legged friends.

ometimes our special cats needs
special homes. And often the wait
for these homes can be long. But not
for recently arrived Freckles, a beauti-
ful 5-year-old orange and white long-
haired tabby who is fond of purring and
cuddling in laps. One look at her, and
it was love at first sight for her new
adopter.
Like all cats surrendered to Berkshire
Humane Society (BHS), Freckles was
quarantined, examined, vaccinated, and
tested for Feline Immunodeficiency
Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus
(FeLV) as part of the intake process be-
fore being placed for adoption. Unlike
most other cats, however, the testing re-
vealed that she was positive for FIV, a
lentivirus thats in the same family as
FeLV. Not once, but twice.
As Cheryl Truskowski, BHS shelter
manager, explains, the next step in-
volved some detective work - deter-
mining if Freckles had been previously
vaccinated for FIV because a cat that
has been will always test positive. Un-
fortunately, however, most of Freckles
history is a mystery. One year ago, a
woman in Otis found Freckles as a stray
- spayed and declawed - and took her in
until a family members allergy forced
her to bring Freckles to BHS, not know-
ing she was FIV positive. And be-
cause, Freckles was not micro-chipped,
which would have allowed Cheryl to
contact her original owner to gather
more information about her, it was im-
possible to delve any further into the
tabbyspast.
In the United States, according to Cor-
nell University, approximately 1.5% to
3% of cats are infected with FIV. Bite
wounds are the primary mode of trans-
mission, but cats can also be born with
the infection or exposed to it by sexual
transmission. Because FIV is a slow
virus, infected cats can go for many
years without showing symptoms.
Eventually, though, a cat with FIV will
become prone to frequent infections
and experience other problems includ-
ing hair loss, swollen lymph nodes, and
diarrhea.
The decision to place a cat with FIV
for adoption is a difficult one, but be-
cause Freckles appeared so healthy and
is so friendly, Cheryl decided to offer
her the chance for a new home and life.
Enter Rosemary of Dalton, MA. Re-
cently, Flowers, her cat of 8 years,
whom she also adopted from BHS
when she was 9, died. Although she
wasnt ready for another cat yet, she
happened to go to the BHS website and
see Freckles. For some reason, I was
so attracted to her, Rosemary says.
She just has this beautiful face. Al-
though Rosemary didnt find out that
Freckles was FIV positive until she
came to meet her, as she explains, By
then, it didnt make any difference.
Too be certain, though, Rosemary did
some research on FIV and talked to
staff at her veterinarians office. Both
confirmed what she had been told by
BHS staff: cats with FIV can live well
into their teens with proper manage-
ment. But, because their immune sys-
tem is challenged, its essential that
they live in a stress-free environment,
are monitored regularly by a veterinar-
ian, and fed a nutritional and balanced
diet. Staying indoors is also a neces-
sity, and, if possible, being the only cat
in a household.
And thats exactly the home that Rose-
mary is giving Freckles. I feel confi-
dent that shes going to do well, she
explains. According to the most recent
report, Freckles acclimated quickly to
her new life. She found her food,
water bowl and litter box in 20 minutes,
and then went to take a nap on my bed,
Rosemary says, adding, Shes a real
joy,
In the United States, according to
Cornell University, approximately 1.5% to 3%
of cats are infected with FIV.

Y
ou may have read my previous ar-
ticles about my beloved Bearded
Dragons Nia and Drielle. I am always
looking for fun things to do with my
reptiles that allow them to preform nat-
ural activities.
Sometimes we go to a "Bearded
Dragon social" at local mom-and-pop
pet stores, and sometimes they help me
to write my term papers for college
(they really love to jump on my key-
board and chase my on-screen mouse,
when I'm doing research), and many
times during the year we teach children
how important it is to know how to
properly take care of your exotic pet.
But one of my favorite things to do with
them during the summer months, when
the temperatures approach the upper
80's to 90's is bringing them outside for
a good bask in the sun. Many people
also consider catching their reptiles a
live tasty treat. Basking is a great activ-
ity to share with your reptile and catch-
ing your own food seems like a cheap
alternative, but there is a serious danger
that all reptile owners need to be aware
of. I am always on the lookout for a cer-
tain deadly insect when I take my "chil-
dren" outside.
While fireflies are abundant and fairly
easy to catch they should not be given
to your exotic reptile, as they are toxic
and ingesting just one firefly can prove
fatal to your pet. Fireflies contain a poi-
sonous lucibufagin chemical, which is
used as a defense mechanism; this
chemical is related to a cardio-toxin and
affects the heart. Reptiles and some am-
phibians that are not indigenous to
North America do not have the instinc-
tive knowledge to avoid fireflies, and
will try to eat them.
According to the press release from
Cornell News, symptoms of firefly tox-
icosis will occur within thirty minutes
of ingestion and include; darkening of
the skin, shaking of the head, gaping
(opening the mouth wide), difficulty
breathing, and attempting to regurgi-
tate. If left untreated by a qualified ex-
otics veterinarian, firefly toxicosis will
cause death within an hour.
To prevent my reptiles from eating
fireflies I always take the following pre-
cautions; I never leave my reptile out-
doors unattended, nor do I feed a firefly
to them, and I do not keep my reptiles
in open-top cages where fireflies can
get in.
Firefly toxicosis has been known to
affect Bearded Dragons, Chameleons,
tree frogs, and even bird species. If your
exotic pet ingests a firefly, you should
take it to a qualified exotics veterinar-
ian, as emergency supportive care must
be given as soon as possible.
While fireflies are inherently toxic, I
must also make a note that ANY wild
caught insect can be deadly to your rep-
tile as many carry parasites. You should
never feed your reptile a wild caught in-
sect. For the love of your reptile, please
keep a watchful eye on them at all times
when they are enjoying all the wonder-
ful benefits of basking outside.

'Dog of the Week'. If that dog's adopted during that week,
Haddad Subaru will pay $50 towards the adoption fee!

G r a c i e
THIS WEEKS DOG IS:
Favorite Things: Walks, car rides, chasing toys, showing off my
obedience commands, eating vegetables.
Least Favorite Things: Loud noises, strangers that dont give me
space to warm up
What I'm Learning at BHS: to use my indoor voice (i can be
barky), to be more confident around new people
Pets I've lived with: A cat (we did ok), dogs ( i did well with)
214 Barker Rd., Pittsfield, MA 314-447-7878
Arent we cute? Im Pepe on the left (black & brown w/white
male), and Im Angel (all brown female) on the right. We are
both 7 years old and need a home that would like a couple of lap
dogs.We would probably do best if we found a home where we
could stay together because we have been together all of our
lives. We need someone who is patient with us because we can
be quite shy when we first meet you. If you show us a lot of
love and patience we will be your special little guys forever! If
you are interested in giving us our dream home, please come
by and see us!

Skleedle and Sequoia are brother and sister who came to
Second Chance because their previous guardian felt he could
no longer care for them. They are 8yr. old grey tiger tabbies who
are wonderful cats. They are mellow, friendly; would be fine
with other cats, dogs and children. They are heavily bonded to
each other and would need to be adopted together. They just
want to find their forever home where they can live out their
lives happy, loved and together. If you feel you can give them
that special home, come by Second Chance and visit them.
Youll be glad you did!

JULIE IS ONE OF THOSE GIRLS WHO
LOVES ALL TOO MUCH ...
and gets jealous of other dogs stealing her
owner's affection. She would do best in an
adult caring experienced home with a
fenced backyard and no competion (dogs
or other pets) so she could give and get all
the affection and attention. Julie loves to
play with toys and people. She likes some
male dogs but is "too bossy"

PETEY is a beautiful 3-4 year old neutered male mix
of dalmatian and staffordshire terrier. He is the most
lovable affectionate boy to people and especially
children. The only thing he loves more than people is
his favorite toy . . . A red ball. Petey would do best as
the only dog in a loving home with a backyard and
some humans who like to throw that red ball.
