A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 4th grade students to learn about the first Americans to live in our community. This lesson uses the 4th grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook States and Regions. (Pg. 190-193) B. Target Population: Grade Level: 4th grade Skill Level: Students at all learning levels Grouping: whole group reading & discussions, independent for activity and assessment C. Materials: Vocabulary & Study Guide (Unit Resources pg. 54)- 24 copies Skill and Strategy (Unit Resources pg. 53) Houghton Mifflin 4th grade social studies book: States and Regions (p. 190-193) Paper and pencils D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G8.4.4A Identify natural hazards in Nevada and their impact on the population, i.e., heat, wind, water.

Student-Friendly Standards G8.4.4A I can identify natural hazards that impact Nevada on the population including heat, wind and water.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE 190- Get Set to Read. Explain the Study Guide students will complete as we read. Call students attention to the map on pg. 191 Identify & discuss the land and Climate of Nevada. Introduce vocabulary (prairie, tributary, levee, lock) 2. As a class, read pg. 190-193, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of TE (pg. 191, 192) 3. Students should take notes and record information on their Study Guide while we read; they can continue working on their Study Guide when we finish reading. 4. Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding.

TE 192- How does the location of the Midwest region affect its climate? TE 192- How does the diagram help you understand Lake effect snow? TE 192- How many animals adapted to living in the Midwest?

5. Discuss with your group- Why do you think people chose to live in the Midwest with its extreme climate? 6. CLOSURE: Discuss the four statements in the Review and Assess section TE 193 F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Students will create a Venn diagram comparing Midwests climate with Nevadas. In a few sentences respond to why do you think our climate is similar or different? G8.4.4A Identify natural hazards in Nevada and their impact on the population, i.e., heat, wind, water.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students have created Venn diagrams before, by having students compare Midwest and Nevadas weather I will be able to verify what my students understand, and what they do not understand. This will allow me to spend more time in the lesson or move to the proceeding lesson that follows. The information that is expected to be in the Venn diagram is information from the textbook that we discussed as well. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part to teach will be discussing the weather here in Nevada. We all have different perspectives; some of us think that it is too hot in the summer while others think its just perfect. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging part to teach will be building on background knowledge, as some students may not be familiar with the Midwest neither with the weather. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension to the lesson, I would use Extend Lesson 1 (pg. 194-195) The Mighty Mississippi. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

For the students that who dont grasp the concepts, I would use the Reteach Mini lesson on pg 193. I would do this gathering in small groups. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I think this lesson can be modified by having books, magazines the Midwest and different pictures of their change of climate. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of this lesson plan was debating on the assessment portion, as assessments play a crucial role determining students knowledge, as to what they have learned and what they still need help with.
