My 12 weeks of Demonstration Teaching consists of many wonderful and positive memories.

I learned so much about classroom management, time management, and how to love a classroom full of children for who they are. Also to understand they are individuals and learn at different paces. I taught all subject lessons and had different goals for all, but one stands out in my mind, because I chose to do several different hands on activities. I feel that students learn so much and demonstrated this on a worksheet test. The lesson that I am referring to is 2 & 3-D figures. I taught this portion of the lesson for 2 weeks, Monday-Thursday, and no Fridays because 1st grade teachers test on this day. I did not want to rearrange their schedule and routine since the students have been on this since the beginning of school. I began the introduction of the shapes on the first day by using solid wooden 2 & 3 D shapes to explain and elaborate on what vertices, edges, faces, and curved surfaces are and to point out on the each shape. I passed the shapes around and then orally quizzed them, to assess their understanding of the shapes and also the vocabulary that will be used during this lesson. This was a plausible reason for their success at the beginning of the lesson. The goal I wanted to reach each day was to have each student identify each figure and describe the difference between the three-dimensional figures. This included referencing the number of edges, faces, curved surfaces, vertices, and to identify if the shape has curves or edges. This goal was assessed each day by ending the direct instruction with a worksheet to monitor each students understanding of the lesson. The second plausible reason for my success was indicated when my Clinical Supervisor came on a scheduled evaluation. I reviewed the previous lessons and the students were able to answer all the questions correctly and also showed enthusiasm of the lesson. The same day I placed the students in groups of four and gave each group a bowl of marshmallows and toothpicks. This hands on activity was so much fun, that my Clinical Supervisor began making his own 3d shapes! I knew it was a total success, but most importantly each student was able to create their own cube, rectangular prism, and triangle pyramid as I asked them to. As I walked around the classroom

to monitor their understanding of the shapes, I asked the students questions such as how many vertices does this shape have, and how many edges does this shape have. On day four of this unit, I escorted the classroom to the playground. I had each student point out real life objects and explain the shape and point out the vertices, edges, and curves. I thought it was important to incorporate this outdoor activity into the lesson plan because it allowed the students to visualize and relate to real life objects. During my DT my least successful unit was that of Goods and Services. The goal for this lesson was reached because the students understood the difference between Goods and Services. I explained that goods are something you can touch and feel, and services are defined as doing something for others. Day one of the lesson the students viewed a short video on the smart board that explained the difference between the two on a 1st grade level. Each days assessment consisted of worksheets that were completed by cutting and pasting pictures and placing them to the right column labeled Goods and Services. The reason why I consider this my least successful lesson is because of the time I had to spend on it. In the 1st grade reading is the main priority, and understandable, but a few times during my DT I felt like other subjects had to be shortened to keep on schedule. Another plausible reason why I thought this lesson was my least successful is because I wanted to invite an outside community service person to come and talk to the students about their service and why they choose to do their particular service every day. But as I mentioned, there was not enough time for this to occur. When I have my own classroom I would like a community service person come visit and explain their service to the community and its importance.
