Glenn Scott, VP with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), met with the Strathmore community on April 18, at the Strathmore Legion. He said that through his work with seniors he has seen patient care in Alberta deteriorate significantly in the past 10 years. He was concerned about the moves announced for 23 seniors from the Strathmore Hospital Extended Care Ward. He said there are health risks for seniors in moving them to new facilities. We know frail seniors have a hard time adapting to change and losing the relationships with their caregivers and establishing new ones is difficult, often creating or worsening health conditions, said Scott. Dr. Leon Pastalen conducted a study in Michigan of 61 elderly patients moved from one nursing home to another. Within the year more than half the patients died, a 28 per cent increased rate of mortality than what had occurred in the home previously. He stated those who died had one or all of three factors evident: the patient was over 80, they were confused about their time and place, had poor medical prognosis. Pastalen has authored many books on the effects housing decisions have on the elderly. A staff member from the Strathmore hospital, who was present at the meeting, made the point that if clients currently need medical care, it is close at hand. If they need blood work, x-rays or physician care, we just push them in a wheel chair down the hall and they can get it, the worker said. She suggested that after the move, patients will have to suffer frequent transfers to hospital and back via ambulance. She said it will be hard on the patients, costly to the province or family members and tie up the community ambulance resources. A family member witnessed that the reason his mother was located in the hospital was because her condition required too many EMS calls from home. He did not want to have the move take place and put her back in the same situation, causing setbacks to her health. He was also concerned how medical assessments would be graded. Scott stated there had been changes to patient assessment levels to accommodate private care homes. It was unclear whether medical conditions would be changed to adapt to the private home criteria. Strathmore chamber troubles

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter President Debbie Wakelam likened her year with the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce to a roller coaster ride, in a proxy address to the membership at the Annual General Meeting held at the Strathmore Days Inn on April 18. I jumped onto that roller coaster. The ride has been exciting, fun, with some tension, a huge learning curve and a large amount of work. Thankfully the AGM provides the opportunity to stop, get off the roller coaster, look at and chalk up our successes, before moving on to the new goals ahead, said Wakelam. She gave a year in review that included: the move to a new office provided by a loan from the Town of Strathmore, organization of the Heritage Day Parade, business meetings and special speaker luncheons, office grand opening, business awards ceremony, review of the bylaws, liaison to offer business courses. Director Robert Breitwieser read the address on her behalf and extended apologies for those absent. Many board members and representatives were not present and less than 10 members were on hand for the meeting. Wakelam challenged prospective board members to examine what commitment and skills they offer to the Chamber and how will they apply those. She challenged all members to get engaged. When there are significant challenges, there are also significant opportunities to show one can make a difference. There is trouble in River City, said Breitwieser, as he outlined Wakelams challenges facing the Chamber for the new year. The organization has had to fill several board resignations and disruptions. It has not completed its bylaws. It is lacking funds for full time staff, leading to communication and continuity problems. Member numbers have decreased from 130 to approximately 80. There are computer and software problems. The 2012 financial statement, professionally prepared but not audited, showed the Chamber has a balance of $2,000 in the bank. It has a $28,661 no interest loan to the Town of Strathmore. Payback occurs over seven years with annual payment taken from generated membership fees. The loan was not voted on or approved by the membership or secured with any collateral, which may leave the initiating board members responsible if the loan goes into default. Members were concerned over communication deficiencies, cancelled meetings with poor membership notice, no membership fee documentation follow-up. There were concerns that the 2013 Heritage Days Parade planning was not addressed yet. There were concerns over the Chambers image in the community. Some personality conflicts were being discussed in the community. It was agreed that any concerns should be addressed to the board in writing for attention. Darlis Colling and Joyce Bazant were accepted to be on the Board of Directors and Robert Breitwieser agreed to remain for another year. Two members were appointed to do a peer review of the financial statement. A special membership meeting was called for the next scheduled board meeting in May. Voting was needed to ratify newly appointed Board members and accept the 2012 AGM minutes. The Chamber also requires appointment of two more board members and a new treasurer. No AGM 2012 minutes were available for the meeting. The minutes will be available at the Chamber office for pickup, were mailed or will be mailed to members on request. Councillor Earl Best, standing in for Mayor Steve Grajczyk, closed the meeting by updating those in attendance on Town initiatives and taking questions from the floor.

TIPS
Do you commute?
I notice a lot of people tend to try to give vague answers to this question and I am unsure why! If you have a 1 or 5 km commute, you might answer no valancy mitchell to this question. If you answer Account executive no, and you are involved in a H Home claim on your way to work, your insurance company may H FArm deny your claim, based on H AuTo misrepresentation! If you drive your car to a H GrouP c-train station, and then take ProGrAmS the train or a bus to work, you H CommerCIAl are still commuting. H reCreATIon If you work and go to school, or have 2 jobs, the H lIFe insurance company wants to H TrAvel know the furthest distance Take ACTION you would be commuting one way, not the total distance for Against High the day. Premiums If you do shift work out of town, this gets calculated differently, but its still considered commuting. The insurance companies dont really charge you a bunch of money just because you commute, they just want to know how often you are at risk on the roads. Thats it! So no matter how you are commuting, make sure to let your broker know!!

Possible risk for senior care

Continued from Page 1 Alberta Health Services has not said what happens to patients whose care needs are more severe than the private facility can accommodate. A worker from the Sagewood facility said that she had seen some of the immobile patients left sitting in uncomfortable positions or unattended. She felt the lack of medical staff, or those with low experience had increased injury rates necessitating ambulance response to the facility. Scott said private homes are run on a profit basis, which extends to their hiring practises and generally reflects in the quality of care given the patients. He would not agree with President Doug Mills of the Alberta Senior Citizens Housing Association, who said, The private sector, alongside the not-for-profit and public sectors, has been successfully operating Continuing Care facilities in Alberta for several decades. Choices made by Government in the delivery of Continuing Care in Alberta should not relate to who will now be managing them. All continuing care facilities, regardless of the ownership, are licensed and are required to meet Albertas Continuing Care Standards. Scott said private facilities usually have staff with less credentials and experience and generally less staff ratios are required compared to hospitals. Private facilities dont have to adhere to the same regulations as hospitals and are not responsible to the Health Minister. MLA Jason Hale stood up for Strathmores patients in the Alberta Legislature, stating his deep concerns the move would have on their care. He chided the decision makers that put money in government officials pockets, taken from seniors pockets through cuts to their programs, putting vulnerable seniors health at risk. He vowed to keep fighting such actions. See YouTube for his audio clip from question period. Councillor Bob Sobol from the Town of Strathmore stood at the meeting to say that the town was concerned about the moves and would be supporting seniors and their families. People wanted more information about the costs families would face because of the move. AHS has stated they will grandfather patients into the new facility, with no cost increases. However, Scott was not confident how long the grandfather clause will last. There are services that the hospital now provides that will be charged as extra costs for patients at Sagewood. There are charges for: extra care outside scheduled procedures, laundry service, attendant moves outside of regular services, in-room cable and phone, hair dressing. Scott encouraged the people of Strathmore to advocate for the seniors. He said it is increasingly clear rural care homes are disappearing and government is favouring centralized private care facilities. He has seen public pressure force Government to change policies. We have to push back and make them uncomfortable. A lot of people in this town care. There are over 12,000 people in this town so we need to make them aware, said Scott. I am hoping we can have success here in Strathmore. It is not only an issue for employees it affects the whole community.

Red carpet rolled out for Ladies Night Out in Standard

Manny Everett Times Contributor The Standard Lionettes club held their annual Ladies Night Out in style again this year with the theme A Night at the Movies. In past years the Lionettes have held theme nights for their annual event like weddings, pyjamas and pearls, and Hawaiian luaus. This year was no different in that A Night at the Movies was left up to the interpretation of the guest. A red carpet was rolled out in front of Standards new community hall and a sign that read the movie times in the theatre inside. Walking inside one encountered everything from people dressed up as characters from favourite movies like Edward Scissorhands (a little on the creepy side), fantastically coloured saris worn by the Bollywood group of ladies, fembots from Austin Powers and even ladies dressed up like popcorn and coke. Yvonne Way, president of the local club, said, The Lionettes Ladies Night Out was a huge success. The time and ingenuity that went in to the costumes for our Night at the Movies theme was tremendous! Everyone looked fabulous! Our new hall was a delight to entertain in! Thank you to the Lions who once again served beverages, they always taste better when a guy serves them. The big raffle winners of the evening were Sue Somerville who won a $500 gift card to Checkmate Shoes, Elaina Geeraert who won a $500 gift card to Cross Iron Mills, Janice Jensen who won a $1,500 topaz necklace and Suzette Lafreniere who won a pair of diamond hoop earrings worth $2,700.

Budget approvals made

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Auditors from Young-Parkyn-McNab presented council with Wheatland Countys 2012 financial report, which showed the county in good condition. The audited report was approved, pending document signing, with the finalized report submitted to the minister according to municipal regulations. The 2013 operating budget passed April 5, required an amendment, with a revision to the 2012 amortization of $12,194,500. The Rural Road Reserve (RRR) needed a transfer of $1,173, 121, as the Alberta Government made cuts to the Transportation Resource Road and Bridge Funding which affected the RRR. They also increased education taxes and municipal taxation, so the tax revenues will change somewhat to compensate for resulting shortfalls. Ratepayers will notice changes on their tax assessment that reflect these changes. Staff tried to equally distribute any burden of taxation increases across all four property classes. There will be an overall increase in net taxes to fund the operating and capital budget expenditures of 5.28 per cent with an additional 3.95 per cent going to the RRR. Generally, residential assessments may be lower, as market values have fallen, resulting in a slight decrease in tax or no significant increase, unless extensive property improvements have occurred. Farmland assessment classes will see an approximate increase of $18 per quarter section. The non-residential class (commercial and industrial) will see tax increases, with revenue from new growth contributing to the RRR. School taxation and taxation for support to seniors programs will also show increases on the statements. The budget breakdowns were reviewed and discussion ensued on the process for estimating future expenditures. Council asked whether more comparisons and information was needed. Administrative Officer, James Laslo, suggested that the amendment covered issues presented by Council to staff. Any new assessment, comparison or forecasts would require an additional dedication of manpower and man-hours. He agreed that factors surrounding amortization was a huge component of predicting future costs and it should be kept in mind during the budgeting processes. We need to set up a system that sets realistic parameters, said Laslo. I would like to recommend to CAO Parkin, the CFO and council to put this amendment into effect, in view of the cuts to the transportation grant and looking forward to the accountability review scheduled to occur within the year. Council voted unanimously to pass three readings of the Bylaw 2013-14, approving the amendment and subsequent tax increases.

New solutions for highway traffic being considered

Shannon LeClair Times Contributor For the past few weeks Town administration has been looking at different possible solutions for the problems on the highway. There are a number of people that speed through town, and there has also been an increase to the number of people running the red light at all three highway locations. Red light cameras were one of the options looked at. A letter had been sent to the Solicitor Generals office requesting the usage of the cameras. At the April 17 regular council meeting Director of Engineering and Operations Jesse Parker told council that the request for the cameras has been turned down. He said one of the major reasons given was because of an interdependence of technologies and a resistance to having multiple technologies tied in to one system. There were concerns about the functionality of the lights once a red light camera system is put into place, and of ownership the system, if the town owns it and how is that integrated into the provincial system. Parker said that put an end to the Towns inquiry to implementing its own system. But we did since that time start to brainstorm and discuss other opportunities, or other factors that we are looking at, said Parker. Administration has spoken with the company who has worked with Lethbridge to incorporate their red light cameras to see what other options they may have. Parker said he has also spoken to Coaldale, who purchased a mobile piece of equipment that they arent currently using, and whether that may be useful to Strathmore. Parker said administration has also been looking at technology used in the States to see if it could be used here. One system is an intrusive type which sees wiring placed in the roadway to signal when a vehicle has passed through the red light and then is picked up on the other side of the roadway and a photo is taken of it, said Parker. Another system uses optical sensors which are a non-invasive technology. We dont know in terms of the case law here in Alberta whether or not thats acceptable or has been demonstrated in court to be effective so were looking into that as a potential alternative as well, said Parker. Parker said they did approach Alberta Transportation about the infrastructure and the lights to see if it would be possible to extend the yellow. We were concerned about the length of time it takes larger vehicles to stop as they approach the lights and the warning that these vehicles have when approaching the lights and the braking distance and braking time that some of these vehicles, larger tractor trailers and things along those lines, said Parker. In addition to asking Alberta Transportation to consider extending the yellow light they also approached them about an all red time, which would see all lights stay red for one second. There has been talk of adding warning lights, or placing the speed sign that indicates how fast drivers are going along the highway. The RCMP and Sheriffs did indicate that they are going to be stepping up their patrols. They are looking at a number of alternatives in terms of how they can patrol the intersections safely and potentially also have a better visibility at the intersections, said Parker. Councillor Rocky Blokland said to him a simple solution would be to have RCMP vehicles with lights flashing at the east and west entrances to town which he feels would force people to smarten up. Councillor Earl Best said there are 18 RCMP officers employed in town and he doesnt understand why there cant be better coverage on the highway, especially knowing it is as dangerous as it is. Strathmore RCMP often are called to help in other communities around Strathmore, such as Langdon who as of yet do not have their own RCMP detachment.

We often hear people say they arent as tall as they used to be. We do lose a little height as we age. After we reach 40, we lose about 0.4 inches of height every 10 years. This loss accelerates after the age of 70. Osteoporosis contributes to this so a healthy diet and regular weight-bearing exercising can slow the shortening. Our bodies are made up of trillions of individual cells working together to make your body work well. When you exercise, focus on the individual cell. Exercise helps train your cells to perform better so they will produce energy more efficiently and helps your lung cells to use oxygen better. Theres a new addiction affecting many people during the past few years although you wont find it in any medical textbook. Its called Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD.) Evidently, 350 million people have this disorder. Are you one of them? If you find Facebook is eating up more and more of your time each day, perhaps its time to control the addiction. Missing a dose of a regularly-taken medication is an error. If this happens often, devise a medication memory device to help you remember to take a dose. Why send your children to camp this summer?

Rick Bayer Camp Chestermere I recall the first time I saw aurora borealis. I was a college student in Saskatchewan and no one had warned me about the northern lights. I had grown up in the suburban jungles of Southern Ontario. I was walking alone along a dirt road outside of Caronport when I looked up in terror. I thought the world was coming to an end. When I realized it wasnt, I was moved to worship at the beauty of creation. At this time of year, parents make all sorts of decisions about summer plans for their kids. Have you ever considered sending them to camp? Camps offer all sorts of experiences that will be of enormous benefit to your children, including a reconnection with nature. Most of us live our lives disconnected from nature. The car companies know this and their commercials take advantage of the angst we feel because of this. We are encouraged to buy this certain SUV and take it to the mountains where well pull our kayak out or open the back and convert it into a tent. One of the best reasons to send your kids to camp is for them to reconnect with nature. In an age of overstimulation from technology, its nice to get outside and enjoy Gods beautiful earth. In creation they return to the more natural rhythms of creation. Kids grow in confidence as a result of attending summer camp. Our camp, like all camps, has a try this environment. Camp is a safe atmosphere to explore and grow in skills. I think of kids who try the climbing wall and we celebrate the small steps of success as they go a bit higher each day. These small steps of success help to build their self-esteem. At camp, kids have recreational opportunities that they dont have anywhere else. Our camp has lakefront property where kids can try all sorts of water sports like power tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and water fights. Wilderness camps offer opportunities like horseback riding, driving quads, white water rafting and hiking. Throw in archery, gladiators, target shooting, and duct tape art and you have experiences that are unique to camp settings. Kids grow socially at camp. They learn what it means to live in community. They get mentored for a week by college aged students who love kids. They learn to expand their friendship circle. In cabin activities they learn to pull together as a team. In our day camps they have eight hours to do life together with new friends and mentors and in our overnight camps, they get to do this 24-7. Its a week of relational growth. Camp is a unique atmosphere that helps kids grow in trust. Through exceptional experiences they learn to grow in trust of themselves and their judgment. They learn to trust others as they work together. They grow in trust of God as they explore faith apart from TV, computer and iPod. As you make summer plans for your kids, consider the diversity of experiences that camp can provide for them and the resulting benefits for your family. (Pastor Rick Bayer directs Camp Chestermere. He can be reached at campdirector@campchestermere.com)

She asked me for one, or at least I think she did I told her I dont speak British, as its sometimes hard to understand her! Our dog is now 13. We have had to put him through three surgeries, because he tends to form crystals in his bladder. The only way we found out, was that he repeatedly kept ringing his door chime to go out for a pee. We actually thought he was just doing it because he wanted attention, or he was bored. However, one day on about the eighth ring, Id had it, and I followed him! Sure enough, the little furry guy was trying to do his job, but very little was happening. Now, Brodie is a very quiet dog he doesnt bark much (I guess its here that I should really apologize to the kids waiting for the bus to Sacred Heart, because he DOES bark at them!). It has nothing to do with his owners teaching Public School and you kids going to the separate one its just he likes buses, trucks, and motorcycles. If were on a drive on the highway, and he sees a motorcycle, its like its the BEST thing in the world for him! The tail doesnt just wag, it whips, it goes in circles it has even thrown him off balance! So, I figured out that between his repeated outside trips, the fact that nothing was working for the old guy, and his look of frustration SOMETHING was wrong (I felt like Columbo)! So, on a Saturday night, our vet came in just for Brodie. The vet found a blockage in his ureter, so he had to have some morphine, so a catheter could be inserted. Water was then to be forced through the catheter, pushing the block crystals back into the bladder. This is where we found out what a tank our dog is. The first shot never even phased him, and he kept walking around sniffing everything. So a second shot was given. NOW, he was comical, he staggered around with his tongue hanging out, and every now and then one of his legs would slip out from under him! He looked like hed just left last call at the Green Hotel!! However, he WAS focused enough to know something was wrong when the thermometer was inserted in his butt! There was a look of disappointment on his face directed at me! It was like he was thinking really you let the vet put that there why? He also didnt like the catheter insertion, and he had a bit of a sad look on his face, like the party was over! The following Tuesday was his surgery day. We were told by the vet that he may find the sutures a bit tight at first, and to keep an eye on him. Keep an eye on him? He was embarrassing; and it HAD to happen when we had company over! We discovered that the stitches were a bit snug, because no matter how we tried to sit him, or lie him something was always poking OUT! Im trying to be delicate here, and he really DID look happy too happy. No matter what we did, we could not get a certain part of his anatomy to retract it was awful! Oh, and then he just had to hop up on the lady for a closer visit. It was like having a porn star for a dog and he wouldnt listen when the director said cut! So, he had to be opened again, with a bit more slack in the stitching, so hed stop showing off so much! During the week of recovery, I had to give him a daily dose of pills. Its hard to give a dog pills. Oh sure, some of the smaller ones are no problem, but the larger ones takes a real knack. I even googled it on You Tube to learn. This is the only time Brodie has ever nipped me. You have to hold his jaws open, shove a pill to the back of his mouth, then close his mouth and hold it closed until he swallows. I wasnt fast enough to get my pill hand out on time and he clamped down! The other frustration was that this dog could always find the pill inside some meat. I had to keep hiding it in the middle of a meatball hed find it, and drop it on the floor. The dog who cant find his chew bone until I step on it, is able to find a tiny pill in a meatball! So, hes on the mend, but whenever I say: car ride, hes not sure he can trust me. And if we even head in the general direction of the vet clinic he begins to shake! Dogs do have memories, he sure does, and its going to take a lot of car rides to make him trust me and the red van again! Sew much fun!

Nancy Strath Bow Bench Retreat

LifeStyles
Students from the Kids Can Sew Program at Bow Bench Retreat held a fashion show for family and friends April 20.

Confession brings a divine offer of help.

A group of 11 girls, ranging in age from 7-15, have been participating in the Kids Can Sew Program at Bow Bench Retreat. The girls have attended 15 classes on Saturday mornings since September. On Saturday, April 20, they held a fashion show for their family and friends to show off their creations. Most of the girls had never sewn before this class and many were inspired by talented Grandmothers who encouraged them to take up the hobby, and have given them sewing machines. Janet Gerbrant is a certified instructor with this program and started teaching kids in her basement more than 10 years ago. She says the kids are so excited to learn to run a real sewing machine, and are thrilled to have something to show for all their hard work. The girls were a little shy showing off their creations, which included PJ bottoms, nightgowns, skirts, hair bows, and notion bags. Most of the kids completed six projects over the 15 three hour classes, which also included a special Halloween, Christmas and Valentines creation. Grace, who is 13, said its been really cool doing this class.

She is currently working on a Steam Punk Coat, which is challenging but she is enjoying the process of creating. Alyson, the youngest student in the class, has aspirations to sew her own Princess gown. The Kids Can Sew program welcomes all kids from 6 years old and up. Bow Bench Retreat has sewing machines available for their use. All the students agreed the class was great fun and look forward to continuing their new found hobby in September. Bow Bench Retreat is located two km south of Carseland and will be running summer sewing programs and more classes starting in September. Find them on Facebook for updates or visit www. bowbench.com.

Get creative, and celebrate our earth!

Wanda Reinholdt Hope Bridges Society Coordinator Since its international beginning in 1990, there has been a yearly celebration that encourages communities and citizens to protect the environment and make choices that do not pollute but improve the state of our earth. This celebration is called Earth Day and it is observed every April 22 around the world. Events that take place during Earth Week are coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. This celebration of the earth came about after John McConnell at the UNESCO Conference in San Francisco in 1969 declared March 21 the first day of spring. Natures yearly blooming each March and the recognition of it was later sanctioned by the United Nations along with Earth Day. A Canadian initiative in 2012 to celebrate Earth Day was Take It Up For Earth. It is outlined on Canadas website www.earthday.ca. The program encouraged people to join others across the nation to do one or more of the following four things: eat and prepare plantbased foods. Drink tap water and be water wise. Detox your personal routine. Activate outdoor unplugged activities. And, upon doing this, report what had been accomplished. The purpose was to promote making better decisions about food, clothing and household necessities, thereby saving thousands of litres of water and oil, and meaningfully reducing personal and collective impact on the environment. According to the tracking of this initiative, 97,132 days of energy were saved from the participation in this program. It was very successful. Another very notable initiative was an artistic one, carried out in 2011. The program was called the Upcycling Challenge. Upcycling is the art of making something beautiful out of something that would normally be recycled or thrown out. For the celebration of the Earth in 2011, individuals were asked to create projects that show safely the importance of re-use and waste reduction. These projects were filmed or photographed. Submissions were judged on written quality, clear instructions and well composed photographed or videos. The winners were then celebrated on the website and given prizes. You can see the details at www.earthday.ca/pub/campaigns/upcycling. So why not join in the celebrating of Earth week this April 22-27? Its very easy to do. Here are some ideas: get creative and take a fun Upcycle Art workshop with Hope Bridges. Shop smart by purchasing what you need rather than what you want. Save energy through replacing light bulbs, putting aerators on faucets, and weather-stripping on windows. Use alternative transportation. Choose local food. Wash clothes in cold water and hang to dry. Set thermostats lower, get programmable thermostats and install ceiling fans. Vacation, travel and work close to home. Take short showers instead of baths and dont run water while brushing teeth. Use natural non-toxic cleaners like vinegar, baking soda and water. Instead of discarding, choose to reuse, recycle and compost. To celebrate Earth Week and have an Upcycling experience, visit the Hope Bridges A Go Green Spring gallery display in partnership with the Strathmore Municipal Library in May. Workshops will be at the library also for the month of May. For more information and to register, contact Hope Bridges at (403) 983-3640.

Preserving Canadas military heritage

To the Editor In 2013, we mark the Year of the Korean War Veteran and the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice. As a graduate member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, I am part of its Operation Legacy, a group of committed Canadians who are dedicated to preserving Canadas military heritage. Throughout the year, tribute will be paid to the more than 26,000 Canadians who served in the Korean War, including the 516 who gave their lives. To learn more about this anniversary and Canadas role in the Korean War, we encourage the public to view The War Amps vignette, Canadians in Korea, on The War Amps YouTube channel (youtube.com/warampsofcanada). Projects like this are part of Operation Legacys goal to carry the remembrance message into the future. With the slogan, it was their war, it is our legacy, we pledge to never forget the sacrifices of those who fought for the freedom of South Korea. Sincerely, Shannon Krasowski, 37 yrs. Carseland to begin fundraising with firefighter challenge

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Carseland Fire Fighters Association is hosting their first annual firefighters challenge on May 4 with the support of Strathmore Rural Fire Fighting Association Board of Directors. Departments from around Alberta have signed up to participate in the all-day event. There will be a course set up, and participants will be expected to complete a number of obstacles to the best of their ability to try and win the top spot. We decided as a fire crew here, our fire department, to put on our firefighter challenge for a fundraiser, we wanted to do something different but we tried to keep it fire-orientated and familyorientated as much as possible, said Carseland Fire Chief Curt Emde. One challenge is where three 50-foot hoses will have to be put together, and once the water runs through them, the first sign must be knocked down. Then it will be simulated that the centre hose has broken and so a scissor clamp must be used to hold the water from continuing to flow, the line changed out before hitting the second sign to complete the challenge. All the exercises that we have included are from practical use on the fire ground, said Emde. We want the kids to come out and see what it means to be a firefighter and potentially inspire future generations of volunteer firefighters. Its a lawn chair affair; bring your lawn chair and your benches and your kids. Theres a sandbox, a skateboard ramp, refreshments and a concession provided by local community associations, all at the community centre. Other fire halls in Wheatland County, Standard, Rosebud and Rockyford have fundraised in recent years to upgrade their facilities and to be able to better serve their communities. For now Emde said the department would just like to raise funds to help better serve their community. The hope is to maybe at some point expand on the current hall. The current Carseland fire hall was built in 1987 and had a couple of trucks and a handful of dedicated volunteers, but due to growth and the institution of the EFRT team as well as increased demand for fire protective services and the fire industry itself the department has outgrown the hall. Weve grown as a department, and with the increased service of the EFRT team were to the point that were bursting at the seams, said Emde. There are 18 active members, and a total of 21 on the roster at the Carseland fire hall. The local clubs, organizations, businesses, Strathmore Rural Firefighting Association and Wheatland County have been instrumental in helping support the Carseland fire department over the years. Emde wants to publically thank everyone for the all of their continued support. The 1st Annual Carseland Fire Department Firefighters Challenge will be held on May 4 at the Carseland Community Centre. Its scheduled to be a full day of fun, with the challenge happening from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and a dinner and dance beginning at 6 p.m. It is free to sit and watch the challenge, and tickets for the dinner and dance are $25. To find out more information, or to purchase tickets contact Garren Dugan by phone at 403-370-2927, or by email at gdugan-cfd@live.com, or Curt Emde at Cge403@gmail.com.

INFORMATION UPDATE:
Seniors living options in Strathmore

Alberta Health Services and AgeCare are expanding the number of continuing care beds in your community.
In fall 2013, the Sagewood Seniors Community continuing care facility in Strathmore (above) will open 70 new supportive living spaces. This expansion also includes the addition of 35 long-term care spaces for seniors who have highly complex health needs whose care cannot be provided in their own home, or in supportive living. Sagewood originally opened in 2011 with 60 AHS-funded supportive living spaces, a level of care that had not been previously available in the community. Supportive living offers health and personal care supports in private suites with the added reassurance of having professional nursing care and support staff available on-site 24 hours a day. Seniors consistently tell us they want the most home-like, independent care possible and this option meets those needs. The addition of these long-term care spaces at Sagewood will allow us to relocate the 23 long-term care spaces at the Strathmore District Health Services facility to Sagewood, providing the community with an overall increase of 82 additional care spaces.

This is good news for our long-term care residents as it will allow them to live in a more home-like environment while receiving care best suited to their needs. Sagewood will provide residents private rooms and bathrooms. It will also have a dementia unit specializing in caring for individuals with dementia, and beautifully landscaped grounds that are accessible and inviting for everyone to enjoy the outdoors. Its important that seniors age as close to home as possible, while receiving the most appropriate care, and the addition of these supportive living and long-term care spaces will provide seniors in your community the right care in the right place.

We invite you to learn more about our plans and would like to hear from you.

Strathmore Youth Club, as well $1.00 from every bear outfit sold from Hidden Secrets will also be donated. We also have some mascots coming out too. May 19 officially marks national teddy bear day. The history of the teddy bear is believed to have begun with President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902 when he refused to shoot a bear while hunting. It is reported that the story circulated and then was made into a political cartoon. The image then sparked the imagination of Morris Michtom who created the first known stuffed bear. The Teddy Bear Picnic begins at 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on May 4. Everyone is encouraged to bring their favourite stuffed friend to enjoy lunch with them. For anyone who maybe needs a new stuffed friend, or doesnt have one, Hidden Secrets will be able to fix that problem.

Eagle Lake RV resort ready to open after last years storm

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter After a storm ripped through Alberta last August Eagle Lake RV Resort was forced to close down for the remainder of the summer. This year marks 22 seasons in operation, and though the work is still ongoing the RV resort will be ready to welcome campers on May 10. Leslie Pringle, owner and operator of Eagle Lake RV Resort, said the four heavily damaged roads were repaired immediately last summer, and the worst of the storm-damaged trees were dropped last November. So far we have dropped about 20 of the 23 trees that are slated for removal due to storm damage. Some clean-up has started this spring, said Pringle. Many of the seasonals pitched in and not only cleaned their sites but helped neighbours, and assisted with cleaning up some common areas. Pringle said there is still more roof repair to be done, and there are still trees and shrubs to be planted to replace some of the trees damaged in the storm. Because there is still work ongoing Pringle warns they could be making more noise, and running more machines than usual, something they are letting their guests know as they book their May visits. And, Pringle said, they are keeping their same low season rates as last year. One of the biggest changes her guests might notice is some of the un-serviced sites will be getting extra sun this year. Last years storm was the biggest Pringle has ever seen since she has run the RV resort. Eagle Lake RV Resort has had an emergency preparedness plan in place for years. It is in writing in our store and our staff is trained in various emergencies. We will be posting our plan in various locations around the park so more people are aware of it, said Pringle. I am very proud of the way the staff reacted on August 14. They did everything they were supposed to, remained calm and kept our guests calm. They even finished cleaning the bathrooms. We are also adding a Twitter feed to our communication platform so that we have a very quick method for getting emergency information out to our guests. For more information about the resort, or to see how the repairs and upgrades are coming, visit the Eagle Lake RV Resort Facebook page.

AHS looks to expand hospital emergency, diagnostics and lab services in Strathmore
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Strathmore residents are in a bit of an uproar since hearing of the provincial governments plan to remove the long term care patients from the hospital and move them into Sagewood. Dave Shorten, Alberta Health Services (AHS) executive director for rural health and facilities says that by relocating the long term care facility it will allow the hospital to expand emergency, diagnostics and laboratory services. Expansion has been identified as a future goal for Strathmore, though at this time there have not been funds allocated for the project. Based on planning that was done several years ago, the volume of patients we see in the Strathmore Emergency Department, and what we hear from staff and physicians, we know that we need to expand these service areas, said Shorten in an email interview. The community has asked for more living options for seniors, and were providing with the 70 supportive living beds and 35 long-term care beds scheduled to open this fall at Sagewood. The relocation of the long-term care spaces to Sagewood will provide us with the opportunity to expand these areas, pending government approval. Concerns over staff jobs have been raised, and when asked, Shorten stated that AHS staff members are unionized and therefore their respective agreements would apply. There is a specific process for this in these agreements. Employment opportunities will exist at Sagewood, and the staff will have opportunities to apply for other positions within AHS, said Shorten. Another concern that has arisen is about the possibility of seniors having to pay large amounts to stay in their home community. Shorten said the government set accommodation rates across the province for all publically funded continuing care spaces, which includes both publicly funded and privately operated facilities. Ensuring that we protect future generations of seniors, by providing them the care they need at a rate that is affordable, is a forefront issue for many. Seniors consistently tell us they want the most home-like independent care possible, and this option meets those needs, said Shorten. Sagewood will offer the full range of seniors services within its facility for seniors to age in place. Long-term care is for individuals with the highest care needs, and although a very small number of seniors actually require long-term care, this level of care will be provided at Sagewood. All facilities providing care are held to and measured against a set of provincial standards to ensure quality care. There are no new patient beds being considered for the space in the hospital. The 23 seniors currently in longterm care at the hospital are expected to move this fall when construction of phase 2 of Sagewood is completed.

He has been a board member of the province of Alberta Child and Family Services Authority since 2005, and he also sits as chair for a community capacity and engagement committee since 2012, said Teri McKinnon, Regional Education Representative for BVC. McKinnon said that Brunton has a respect for organizations that are trying to position themselves with a trusted brand, and he wants to help them build a strategy to do so. IN the past Stratus Marketing delivered a similar, and successful, workshop to BVCs Foothills office, which is in the Okotoks/High River area. Stratus has offered support to BVC in their entrenchment of regional stewardship support to community building, said McKinnon. Bill assists organizations to look inside and look outside. Understanding who you are and what you offer is just as important as understanding who your audience is and what they need, said McKinnon. I would very much like to continue supporting the growth of the Strathmore/Chestermere region in their advancement of community development. Workplace training, further education and professional development are important for people to feel growth and meaning in their work effort. Increasing access to post-secondary and work development programs is a critical strategic focus of Bow Valley College. The workshop begins at 8:30 a.m. and will run until 4:30 p.m. The cost is $105 per person and it includes lunch and a manual. The workshop will be held at the BVC learning site, which is located in the Lambert Centre. There is a limit of 16 participants. To register contact Teri McKinnon at tkmckinnon@bowvalleycollege.ca or by phone at 403-462-2550.

On page 7 of the April 19, 2013 issue of the Strathmore Times, the article, Standard Community Hall finally sees a Grand Opening has an error. It states that Susan Bragg was awarded with a plaque that recognized all her hard work toward the cause of the new hall. The plaque was actually awarded to the board and reads: To the Community Hall Board Volunteers and Contributors In Appreciation for all the Hard Work and Dedication to Building The New Standard Community Hall. Standard Nazareth Lutheran church vote

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter In 2011 the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada (ELCIC) began to follow a different pathway in its thinking that has left many congregations upset and voting on whether to stay with the ELCIC or seek out another Lutheran denominational body. Many people will state that its because of the approval of the social statement on human sexuality, but in reality that is only one small factor in the grand scheme of things. Some of those who are upset feel that the ELCIC has loosened its thinking on the teachings of the Bible, and in fact that they no longer truly hold to the word as it is written. On April 21 a special meeting was held at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Standard. There was a vote to determine if they will separate from the ELCIC or if they will stay. There was no discussion as members filed in to secretly cast their ballot. In order for the church to split from the ELCIC there would need to be a majority vote of two thirds. Of the 78 ballots, there were 31 in favour of the split, 46 against it and one spoiled ballot. Congregation member Lori Bach, with the support of fellow church members, began the petition that brought the church to the vote on the 21. I set up the petition because at the Annual Meeting of our church in January there were questions from many at the meeting about staying with or leaving the ELCIC, said Bach in an email interview. Because of this I felt that it was time for our church, Nazareth Lutheran, to have a clear idea of what the congregation wanted to happen so that we would then have a clear mandate to move forward, either looking for another church body to align with or stay with the ELCIC. There appeared to be enough support at the annual meeting to bring the issue to a congregational vote. Bach said she had problems with a number of issues including, but not limited to, how the ELCIC is handling the problems they have left the congregation facing in terms of the financial and structural stress. She said it has left them with very few resources to support their congregations, especially the smaller ones. Standard Nazareth Lutheran Pastor Brad Everett,

who was also in support of the separation, wasnt sure what to expect when the vote was called. This has been a trying and challenging time on many levels, not just for the congregation of Nazareth Lutheran but for many ELCIC congregations within Alberta and across Canada. That being said, while no one goes looking for rough times, it is precisely in the middle of storms like this that we can best experience the grace, peace and presence of Jesus, said Everett. Its my hope for the members of this congregation (and every other one that has gone through this experience) that through it all they have had the chance to grow in their knowledge and love of Christ. In the future for Nazareth Lutheran the issue of separation can be brought back for further discussion and another first vote. If council does not make the request themselves, then another petition from the congregation would be required. To date in Alberta more than 30 churches have left the ELCIC to join other Lutheran bodies. It is hard for Everett to determine what would happen if the vote were to have passed in Standard. He thinks some congregation members may choose to stay independent while they decide what to do next. Other congregations feel it important to belong to a larger church body and so will have done research into other options so that once the second vote to sever happens they can have a motion ready at that meeting to vote to join another church body. I have no idea what Nazareth would have done as we were not at that point, said Everett. For now, with the motion defeated there are decisions to be made by a number of members. Both Everett and the congregation members in favour of separating have decisions to make in terms of their own future with the ELCIC.

Old Rosebud fire hall sold

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Rosebud Fire Hall and Water Service building will finally get a new owner. There were two bids for the property, and Travis Friesens was accepted at a price of $85,000. Discussions regarding disposal or use of the buildings have been ongoing between the Rosebud Fire Department and Wheatland County Council over the past year. Purchase proposals were tendered as of Feb. 1, closing the application process March 1. Interested parties were to provide identification and description of their firms, give a contact person, designate and provide project experience of the contractors and consultants for the project, include detailed plans for their proposals and give a cost estimate on the proposed drawings. All proposals had to adhere to county guidelines for Community Service Zoning, bylaws and setback parameters and address watershed issues. Reviews of the applications were done during March, checking for compliance to the guidelines, and then they were evaluated on six criteria factors, with final grading on a percentage scale. Factors involved in making the decision were the contribution to community, enhancement of tourism, the use of the separate buildings, the purchase price for the property and all buildings. Friesen came in with a 98 per cent rating on the evaluative scale. The successful applicant will be notified that the approval was made at council on April 9. The new owners will be able to begin their development application as of May 31. There may be a stipulation by county to hold some of the payment back, until conditions of the sale are fulfilled. The money will be applied to the Rosebud Fire Association loans. The Rosebud Historical Society indicated their interest in a partnership or lease with the new owners, to restore the buildings and keep the property as a historic site.

Subdivision with conditions

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor An Area Structure Plan (ASP) for a development northeast of Strathmore, bordering RR250, has been put hold pending a second level Environmental survey. Mothers Day market The land involves two quarters bordering a seasonal and The Farmers Market held its annual Mothers Day permanent Wetland area. The owners and developers plan Market on April 20 at the Civic Centre. There were plenty of great gift ideas at the market, as dozens was to place seven, three acre lots over three building phases. of vendors showed off their wares. At the public hearing regarding the proposal, staff indiRose Hamrlik Photo cated that Alberta Health requested an Environmental Plan on the Phase Two area, due to the potential for contamination from a possible pesticide tank leak, situated on a neighbours land. Development staff said that County officers had been called to inspect the property and have asked the neighbours to address the issue by May 2013. The developer contends that the tanks were situated on the County right of way and if there is a leak, it is up to the County to help cover costs of the Environmental survey. It is an interesting situation, said developer Patricia Maloney. There certainly is the possibility that there could be contamination if there is, the tanks belong to a third party and are sitting on the County road allowance. The Nelsons shouldnt be penalized because they didnt contaminate any thing. We think there should be some cost sharing by the County on the Environmental survey. Maloney said the study could be done at the time of de velopment. She said the owners were concerned about the April 27, 2013 delays and increased cost that would result, if the second April 27, 2013 study was required. She said that the owners agreed to hold 7:00pm 7:00pm off on development of the second phase, if approval for the @ @ other two phases could go ahead. sion. They suggested it may make a difference if the lot lines were placed differently. Maloney said approval is needed to change the lots and develop a more comprehensive plan. Staff indicated that a more comprehensive plan was not usually required at this stage and it may set a precedent for subsequent applicants. Francis Henrickson, a resident in the area, questioned the intent of the project to drill eight separate wells and wondered how that would impact the water table. A Water Availability study indicated that the aquifer supporting the area could support the subdivision and another six sections. Each lot is designed to have their own septic system and would require inspections. It was suggested that a centralized sewer system for the development would make more sense. As the area become more developed, the system could be tied into residential treatment centres. Maloney said that the County currently didnt require this for acreages. There is a private runway on the land and Councillor Alice Booth questioned its status. Councillor Ben Armstrong asked whether the areas storm water drainage had been addressed. Several councillors indicated they were not in favour of the plan as it was presented. There was a request by council to put the application aside, until more information was given on the Environmental impact, and a more comprehensive plan could be presented to them. At a second public hearing, the owners of a 28 acre parcel out subdivision questioned Staff and Council recommendations to allow a WID a caveat on the land. It was indicated that it was for assurance that the wetlands would not be filled in or developed. Councillor Brenda Knight indicated that there were provisions under the Water Act that allowed WID to apply a caveat against a property. Owners indicated that one wetland was fed by natural springs and the other was fed by runoff that was not part of the canal flow system. They said they had an agreement signed in 1994 to restrict grazing near the areas, but that agreement would run out next year. The owners were not against wetland preservation. They had worked in the past with Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Association to create a dugout, and develop an agrarian habitat where pheasant populations could be released. Council passed the application to second reading.

Estate directions were first, to have the funds pay off debenture debt for Gleichen water and sewer debentures, and any residual funds used for water and sewer capital. This effectively paid off the Gleichen sewer debenture in December 2012. The funds also reduced the outstanding principle on the water debenture. On April 2, 2013, a final payment of $33,641.71 was issued, on behalf of the estate, with instruction that these funds be applied to payment of the Gleichen water debenture. It was a lovely surprise, said Chief Financial Officer, Pat Lietch. Prowse passed away on September 20, 2010 at the age of 100. She was raised in Gleichen and continued to live and raise a family, in the GleichenCluny area, after she married her husband Arthur. Prowse was very active in many of the community associations and contributed much to the lives of the residents in the Gleichen and Cluny area. She will also be remembered at the Wheatland Lodge, where she resided before illness sent her to the Vulcan hospital. Councillors suggested that a nice tribute be made to Prowse, perhaps in the form of a dedication plaque, which will hang in a prominent place such

Clean air insurance

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Albertans think we live in a province with fresh, clean air. Yet, last February, Edmonton and Calgary were put under air quality advisories. A study printed in Environmental Health Perspectives in Feb. 2013, concluded that Canadians are suffering increased cardiovascular incidents leading to death, due to breathing in small amounts of particulate over the long term. Alberta Environment noted concerns over air quality levels in the Calgary region since 2007 and requested air monitoring take place. The nonprofit group, Calgary Region Airshed Zone (CRAZ) agreed to be the monitor for air quality in this region. CRAZ visited Wheatland County Council on April 16, to recap the importance of air quality and give their recent information for our area. We have made a commitment to update the municipalities every three years and this is the most accurate data available, said Jill Bloor, Executive Director of CRAZ to Wheatland County council. The group collects data through passive and continuous monitoring systems placed throughout Alberta. Placement maps, daily air quality numbers and the specific readings can be seen on their website at www.craz.ca. CRAZ data also goes to the provincial and federal government for formulating environmental decisions. The group is currently funded through the Alberta Government, memberships and private donations. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will continue to get the funding that we had hoped for, said Bloor. CRAZ recently acquired specialized mobile readings truck through a funding partnership donation. The drawback is the mobile unit requires calibration before and after it makes readings. Calibration can cost from $7,000 to $10,000 each time. CRAZ told councillors they would like to have the unit available for monitoring emergencies, but just dont have the funding to do so. Passive collectors run about $800. Wheatland County has four passive samplers in its boundaries. The collectors monitor acid-forming gases that may affect vegetation growth and animal and human health conditions. They monitor pollutants and particulate matter. The data is analyzed, taking into consideration topography and air flow variables. Levels are calculated for carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone levels, total hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, and particulate matter such as dust and smoke. These enter the air through industrial and manufacturing facilities, transportation emissions, biogenic sources and agriculture activity. The air quality index is rated on a one to 10 scale, with 10 being very high risk and a recommendation that people avoid strenuous outdoor activity and children, elderly and those with health problems stay inside. Pollutants are graded on a one to 100 scale, with readings of 1-25 being the best. Bloor qualified the maximums reflect the point where gases damage health. Overall, Wheatland has good quality air, it ranges one to three, where you want it to be all the time, said Bloor. Bloor said most of our higher levels are due to transportation emissions from commuter traffic and oil and gas emissions. Quick changes can occur with changing weather patterns, like wind blowing forest fire smoke from BC. Calgarys February advisory was from a fire on the TsuTsina Reserve. This year, CRAZ representatives have been doing public education sessions with schools and Co-op stores, to make people more aware of things that effect air quality. They also have worked with employers to evaluate their businesses and implement safer conditions for their employees. We pride ourselves that we are the first monitoring program to get out and deliver education programs, said Bloor. Councillor Brenda Knight indicated that she would like to have areas in her riding monitored and analyzed. However, Bloor replied CRAZ did not have the resources to do special monitoring. She said special monitoring, emergencies or complaints were usually directed to the ERCB. They qualified that people often called because of odours, but an odour can be a complex combination of materials. CRAZ representatives cautioned trying to interpret data from a single months monitoring. The September charts and maps refer to the passive monitoring data during the month of September only. You cannot derive any broader conclusions from just one month of passive monitoring data. Ideally you need approximately 3 years of data that would give 36 data values (1 data value per month) for the purposes of trend-analysis, said Mandeep Dhaliwal, CRAZ Air Quality Program Manager. Wheatland County pays an $828.50 annual membership to CRAZ. Councillors discussed whether the membership brought value for ratepayers. CAO Alan Parkin questioned that the data had been collected for ten years and wondered why the stations data was still limited. Wheatland has been a member for four years. Councillor Alice Booth felt the awareness and education programs were valuable, but expected information that is more precise. Down the road, they can tell us what is happening in the Airshed. They are new. If anything goes over four or five, they can tell us. It goes to what our future readings may be, said Councillor Ken Sauve. Four council members supported renewing the CRAZ membership and 2 opposed, keeping Wheatland as a member for another year.

as the Gleichen Community Hall. Rockyford debt discussion An outstanding accounts receivable amount owed to the County by the Village of Rockyford garnered discussion, about clarifying the terms of the contract. Councillors asked the CAO to contact the village and see what credits had been applied and whether the situation could be clarified and rectified. They could be reading the contract differently than we are reading it. I would like to see us discuss options for repayment with them said Reeve Glenn Koester. Valley bus donation The County made a $2,000 donation to support the Drumheller Valley Bus program, which serves ratepayers in the eastern region of the county. The program sent a thank you letter to council for their contribution that went toward a wheelchair lift. There was some confusion as a duplicate request was made after the payment given on March 1, 2013. council asked the CAO to contact the program for clarification and bring it back to Council. Looking for engineers Applications to two proposals for Engineering Services were opened in Council on April 16, 2013. The posting was placed on the Alberta Purchasing website last year. Forty nine companies initially showed interest in the posting. The applicants competing to provide engineering services for the County on potable water, sewer and storm water projects were: Aplin and Martin Consulting, Associated Engineering, Brisbin Sentis Engineering, Genivar, ISL Engineering and Land Services, Morrison Hershfield, MPE Engineering., Shepherd Andrews Ltd, Stantec, McElhanny Consulting. The same companies applied to assist with engineering reviews for the Planning and Development department, with the exception of Aplin and Martin, who were not in the running. City Spaces Consulting moved into the vacant space. CAO Alan Parkin suggested to Council that they may like to consider opening of job tenders outside of council meetings, as an efficiency measure.

Expressions, The Dance Gallery celebrates

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Expressions The Dance Gallery has been teaching tap, jazz, ballet, musical theatre, lyrical, acro, hip-hop, modern and contemporary dance, since 1983, to students three-years-old and up. As they celebrate their 30th anniversary this year, they have an additional more reason to celebrate this month. At a dance competition in Olds, in mid-April, says Carolyn Standing, Expressions office manager, one of our numbers, called Lightning, came in second place for overall high score. Lightning is an acro (acrobatics) number, Standing explains, and it was performed by 7-to-17-year-olds. Expressions isnt pausing long to celebrate their achievements, though. They look forward to new spring programs, a June recital, and summer day camps. Theyre holding two half-hour preschool programs on Wednesdays, April 17 to June 19. Ballet Boogie runs from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Kinder Dance from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Each ten-week program costs $125. The Gallery also hosts two separate hour-long sessions of Springtime Saturday Sampler, on Saturdays, May 4 to June 15. That seven-week program costs $60. Expressions will then host a year-end recital at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary, June 22. Itll be (students from) the whole studio, Standing says, including any adults who choose to participate. The recital will be a special time to recognize their 30th anniversary. And for the summer, Expressions is already accepting registrations for five dance and activity camps. The Princess Tea Party day camp, for age three and up, will be offered twice from July 15 to 19, 10 a.m. til 12 Noon; and August 12 to 16, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tutus and Tiaras camp is also for children age three and up, and will be held July 22 to 26, 10 a.m. to 12 Noon. Kaleidoscope day camp, for children age five and up, will run August 12 to 16, and Bop Til U Drop, for children six years and up, will also be held August 12 to 16. For the same age group, the Dancin Divas will run from July 22 to 26, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Each week-long day camp costs $100. When adult programs resume at Expressions in the fall, Standing has encouragement for those whove never been involved in dance. Before taking her first dance class, I was very scared, she admits. But I would say to adults that are interested and wanting to try it...that they should just put themselves out there and give it a try, she says. If nothing else, its a great evening out with good friends...and a night of exercise. To learn more or to register, see www.edgdancestrathmore. com or call 403-901-6392.

After months of anticipation and preparation, the 2013 Alberta Cup isvolunteer@smhockey.com going to be held this weekend, April 25-28. This is the first time that the event will be held in the Town of Strathmore. Were excited, said Strathmore Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) outgoing President Wayne Hansen. After eight months of preparation, from the time of the bid to now, it is great to see the (Alberta Cup) now here. Were really happy to see and showcase the top bantam players in Alberta here in Strathmore. There are eight teams participating in the event, each representing a different zone in the province, and all games are to be held at the Strathmore Family Centre. Representatives from Hockey Alberta arrived on Tuesday, while players arrived on Wednesday. The competition starts on April 25 with six games, and there will be six more on Friday, with four games each on Saturday and Sunday. Hansen said that the preparations for the event went really well. We did have some struggles meeting operational things like hotels because were not like the big cities, which have a larger number of rooms available, he said. However, the hotels here have really stepped up, and we appreciate that. Otherwise, were pretty much good to go, and were ready for the event. Hansen hopes that everyone at the event has a good time. We hope that the kids work hard, and that we have a fair competition where everyone has fun and enjoys themselves, he said. Wed also love for the town to come out to the games because of the support weve had for minor hockey here. There are a couple of subtle improvements being done by the SMHA compared to previous hosts of the event. One of those things is to have a hospitality room for the parents that will allow them to eat while watching the games on the television screens in the room. Another thing that will be done is that a caterer has been arranged for the players to allow for the local businesses to have room for the tourists that are coming into town for the event. The SMHA is still accepting volunteers for the event, up to the last minute. If anyone would like to volunteer, Hansen said they can approach the SMHA for more information.

Wrestling returns to Strathmore

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The Strathmore Elks are bringing wrestling back to the community on May 11 when the Canadian National Wrestling Alliance (CNWA) returns. The event will see the Strathmore Curling Rink once again transformed into a wrestling ring as CNWA stars Bambi Hall, Kenny Doll, Massive Damage, Bobby Sharp and Kat Von Heez prepare for their matches. Sharp is excited for his return to Strathmore and his match against the five time former NWA World champion, Pearce, who has been featured in recent weeks on Spike TVs Impact Wrestling program, stated a CNWA press release. The co-feature on the card will see a ladies tag team match as the current CNWA womens champion, 20-year-old Bambi Hall of Vancouver partners with Winnipegs Kat Von Heez to do battle with the villainous duo of Raven Lake and Riea Von Slasher. Its a family orientated show and theres no alcohol our anything like that, said Don Perepelkin, Secretary Treasurer for the Elks club. (Its) just something for a fun family night out, and also it will help us raise money that we can use to go back towards the community for various projects. Tickets have gone down in price. Last year they were selling for $20 each, but this year that price has been dropped to $10 to entice more people to come out and make a night of it and fill the rink. There will be a 50/50 draw and a silent auction table and Perepelkin said the money raised by the items on the silent auction table will be going towards a Relay for Life sponsorship. We hope to raise some money off of it, if we just break even and everyone has a good time thats great but we also do catering and also bartending for weddings and other functions people might have, said Perepelkin. The Elks raise money through activities such as catering; they then distribute that money back into the community to different groups and organizations who are in need of a helping hand. Perepelkin said he has also been in discussion with Brentwood Elementary School about having wrestler Tattooed Terminator Massive Damage speak to some of the students. Its the fight for life youth empowerment program and hell be going to the school on the Thursday before (if the school okays it) the wrestler comes here and talks to them about positive life choices and staying clear of drugs and alcohol and bullying, said Perepelkin. There will be a total of six matches at the May 11 wrestling event and 100 per cent of the proceeds will be staying in Strathmore to support the Elks Club. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or can be reserved by sending an email to elks491@hotmail.ca. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the bell rings at 7:30 p.m.

Ready for the show!

The Crowfoot Livestock 4-H Club had their annual farm tour on April 7. Club members traveled to each others farm to see the projects. It was a chance to see each others progress, get some helpful tips and check out the competition. Members are now preparing for the District Heifer Show on May 10 at the Calgary Stockyards. The weather was cold on tour day, so a big thank you goes to the Stewart family for providing snacks, hot chocolate and a warm place to have the monthly meeting afterwards. Meanwhile club member Kassie Greigs steer is ready for the show.

Silver Sharks Swim Club tryouts

Jennifer Mertz Head Coach May 15 is the date to remember if your child is interested in swimming next year on the Strathmore Silver Sharks Swim Club. We are trying something new this year due to the enormous popularity of our swim club, instead of a first come first serve registration we will be assessing each new swimmer to make sure they are placed appropriately based on their skills and the space available in the club. We will be holding our tryouts for new swimmers Wednesday, May 15 at 5 p.m., please register by e-mail at silversharksenquiries@hotmail.ca. Strathmore Silver Sharks Swim Club is a competitive squad that offers the opportunity for athletes to have fun, train and compete in a supportive team atmosphere, build self confidence, build relationships and continue to foster a love of the sport. We hope to support our athletes by creating a desire to stay active, build lasting relationships with their teammates and instill the value of competition within a team sport. We offer a variety of options both competitive and non-competitive, while continuing in the spirit of the desire to always strive to do better in whatever path you choose. Please contact silversharksenquiries@hotmail.ca with any further questions and we look forward to seeing you at our tryouts.
