SPOTLIGHT ON Department of Internal Medicine 100th Anniversary At the time of this writing near the end of calendar year 2011, centennial celebrations are winding down. We had a great year celebrating the successes of the previous 100 years with focus and attention on each of the divisions in the department, a very successful CME program held in the spring and successful hosting of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine Alumni Reunion CME Program. The latter has resulted in the production of a series of articles which will be published as a special issue of the journal Missouri Medicine to recognize the departments centennial. RECOGNITION 2011 School of Medicine Alumni Association Community Service Award Honored at the Medical School Reunion was William M. Fogarty, Jr., MD, clinical professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, who was presented with the 2011 School of Medicine Alumni Association Community Service Award. "On any given Friday afternoon, one can find retired internal medicine practitioner, Dr. William Fogarty offering his services to the community as a volunteer physician at Casa de Salud," Philip Alderson, MD, said. Casa de Salud is a health and wellness center, which provides basic health and wellness services for uninsured and underinsured new immigrants in St. Louis. A 1960 School of Medicine graduate, Dr. Fogarty practiced internal medicine and endocrinology for 30 years. After retiring from Southwest Medical Center in St. Louis, he continued to volunteer for 7 years at La Clinica,

a health clinic in South St. Louis that served the Hispanic community. When the clinic closed, Dr. Fogarty became active in the advisory committee interested in establishing another type of clinic in the area. Now he is among the team of physicians at Casa de Salud, who provide medical care and often assist patients in receiving care from larger health care facilities.

The attendees were encouraged to bring a gift (infant up to 12 years). These gifts were to be donated to clients of Casa de Salud and the student run Health Resource Center (HRC). Well over 100 gifts were divided between these groups. ANNOUNCEMENTS Collaborative Grant, Saint Louis University Primary Care Training Center, through HRSA Bureau of Health Professions Program. The purpose of the proposed project, the Saint Louis University (SLU) Primary Care Training Center is to substantially expand the previously funded AAU in Family Medicine to form a collaborative between Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics. The overarching goal of this collaboration is to increase

the numbers of medical students and residents choosing primary care as their profession. The proposed project fits in with department chairs (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics) vision and dovetails nicely with the Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice President for Health Sciences Center vision for inter-professional teams in clinical practice and inter-professional education. The Dean has lent significant support and resources for the design and implementation of an interprofessional curriculum for medical students along with providing resident exposure to practicing within an inter-professional model at our clinical training sites. 2010-2011 Department of Internal Medicine Annual Report is on-line now at http://internalmed.slu.edu. DIVISION OF CARDIOLOGY The Division of Cardiology would like to announce the opening of a new consultative patient clinic.
