A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is the 6th lesson in a unit about where we live. In this lesson students will identify the United States on a map and be able to locate their state within the United States. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 110-113. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: at grade level Grouping: whole group instruction, independent work and journal entry C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 110-113 Social studies journals Pencils Blank map of North America Blank map of the United States Crayons/ colored pencils D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.1.3- Recognize the shape of North America on a map G6.2.7- Locate his/her city and state on a map

Student-Friendly Standards I will be able to locate the United States on a map of North America. I will be able to locate my state and city on a map of the United States.

E. Procedure: 1. Review with students what the world looks like on a map. 2. Ask students if they can recall where North America is located on that map 3. Discuss with students the 3 countries that make up the United States on a map of North America. 4. In social studies journals, allow students to list all the states they know off the top of their heads- hopefully they can come up with a few. 5. Students will work individually with blank maps of North America and the United States to locate key places.

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Informal assessment though discussions, map completion and journal entry will be used to measure student understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know students understand this content when they can properly describe North America and the United states and where each is located on a world map. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think this whole lesson will be easy to teach. This is a very independent lesson, allowing students to make discoveries about a map on their own. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I dont think there is a challenging part of this lesson. I think this is a really easy and simple lesson to teach and learn about. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? Like the rest of the lessons, maps will continually be used in further lessons where students can continue to learn about different parts of the world using a map and not just North America and the United States. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I will pull small groups to re-teach the lesson when needed. If students dont understand the location of North America and the United States, I will work with a globe to teach location and position on a map until content is understood.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I dont think this lesson needs to be changed much or at all. This is a really easy lesson to write and administer, but allows students to learn about specific parts of the world. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? This lesson was really an easy lesson to write. I dont think there was a difficult part to write. Creating the worksheets took a little bit of time but not too much.
