Introduction

Positionedonahill,withnotonlyaviewofthemeanderingJamesRiverbutwithviewsofacres
andacresofmeadowsandrollinghills,sitstheSt.EmmasMilitaryAcademyatBelmead.
ColonelEdwardMorrellandhiswifeLouiseDrexelMorrellofPhiladelphiapurchasedBelmead
in1893.AfterpurchasetheycreatedSt.EmmasIndustrialandAgriculturalSchool,ahigh
schoolforAfricanAmericanmenwhichopenedin1895.Theschoollaterevolvedintoamilitary
academyandbecameSt.EmmaMilitaryAcademywhichremainedasuccessfullearning
institutionuntiltheearly1970s.
LocatedonanadjacentplantationandseparatedbyDeepCreek,byadamandalsobyabridge,
sitsthemajesticcastleofSt.FrancisdeSalesatMt.Pleasant.LouiseDrexelMorrellssister,St.
KatherineDrexel,purchasedMt.Pleasantandin1899establishedStFrancisdeSales,ahigh
schoolforAfricanAmericanandNativeAmericanwomen.LikeSt.EmmaMilitaryAcademy,St.
FrancisdeSalescontinuedasasuccessfullearninginstitutionuntiltheearly1970s.
Theschoolcurriculum,atthattime,wasestablishedbythePhiladelphiaInstituteofTechnology
whichisnowcalledDrexelUniversity.St.Emmastudentsstudiedfarming,engineering,
accounting,cannery,equipmentrepairandmanagement.Themilitaryacademywasnationally
honoredandreceivedawardsforhighmilitaryachievementasthestudentsparticipatedin
militarydrills,receivedknowledgeofarmyregulationsanddisciplinesandmaintaineda
nationallyhonoredRifleTeam.
St.FrancisdeSalesofferedacompetitivecurriculumtoprepareyoungwomentobecome
certifiedteachers,aswellasachallengingnursingcurriculum,homemakingskillsandgeneral
businessskills.Theschoolchoirwashighlycommendedandapplaudedastheyparticipatedin
nationaleventsandastheyperformedforthepublicthroughradiobroadcasts.Inadditionto
academicsandmusicthebasketballteamralliedandbecamechampions.Theschoolwas
accreditedwiththeCommonwealthofVirginiainthe1920sandaffiliatedwithCatholic
UniversityinWashington,DCinthe1940s.
ThetwoinstitutionscontinuetoregallyperchabovetheJamesRiverandabovethefieldsand
meadowssituatedbelow.However,ithasnotbeentheendofarewardingeducationaland
inspirationalexperienceformanyoftheseyoungwomenandmenwhoattendedthe
institutionsbecausebothSt.FrancisdeSalesandSt.EmmaMilitaryAcademymotivatedand
encouragedthemtotaketheirenrichinglearningexperienceswiththemtomakeapositive
differenceintheworld.
