Pass out & explain the Study Guide & Reading Skills students will complete as we read. Call students attention to p. 249. Discuss the many flags of the different countries represented. Ask them what this tells them about the United Nations. Identify and read Build on What You Know. Discuss giving and getting help with students. Introduce vocabulary words (ambassador, treaty, President Barack Obama) and review the definition

4. As a class read p. 248-251. Stop and read the background information on the bottom of TE p. 248, United Nations. 5. Stop and ask questions from margins of TE (p. 249-250) to check comprehension: (TE 249) What is an ambassador? (TE 249) What is a treaty? Objectives: I can write about and explain things the United Nations and U.S. does for other countries. And I can tell and write who the president of the United States is currently. Ask students if they believe they met these objectives. Have them show you with okay, thumbs-up, or thumbs-down sign up near their hearts. Students hand in their tests as their Ticket Out the door.

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Students will be able to identify the United Nations as a group that helps other countries. They will recognize President Barack Obama as the current president of U.S. I will check student understand during the discussion responses, Reading Skills, Study Guide, and Chapter 8 Test. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will informally check students verbal and written responses on the Study Guide, Vocabulary Study Guide, and Test (Ticket Out). An informal thumbs up or thumbs down will additionally identify students who met objectives or may need clarification during closure. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? Reading and following the textbook guidelines will be the easiest part of this lesson. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part of this lesson is not devoting an entire lesson on President Obama. Im not sure Im doing the class justice by throwing the additional objective in there and briefly discussing him in such a short time period. I just realized towards the beginning of this lesson that we would have been discussing Obama during previous lessons. I probably should have had the objective included in one of those. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would love to extend this lesson with more study on National holidays and foreign affairs. It would be cool to go into some economical exports and trades with other countries at this time. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I will have students contribute to a class chart about the United Nations and President Obama. They would photocopy pictures and charts about the United Nations and

president from other resources. And lastly, I could reteach the minilesson on (TE 251) to struggling students. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? Id like to add a read aloud and possibly a flags activity station for students to further explore countries and their flags. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? These lessons are getting much easier. I added the Chapter 8 Test as the assessment, so the assessment part was pretty easy this time. Not too difficult preparing this last lesson. Reading Skill & Strategy
