Generator Protection

7UW50 tripping matrix

Application The tripping matrix 7UW50 is a component of the Siemens numerical generator protection system. The tripping matrix provides a transparent, easily programmable facility for combining output commands of the trip outputs of individual protection devices with plant items such as the circuitbreaker, overspeed trip etc. The matrix was developed for marshalling tripping commands of large power station blocks. With its help the tripping schematic can be temporarily changed e.g. on the basis of a generator circuit breaker revision. If the software matrix incorporated in each generator protection unit is used for marshalling the tripping commands, the marshalling in the protection unit must be changed for this purpose. Design and construction The tripping matrix comprises a crossbar distribution with 28 inputs (columns) and 10 outputs (rows) which are divided into two groups with 14 inputs each. Both groups are arranged one over the other and electrically connected internally. The columns and rows are connected via diode plugs. To prevent contact with dangerous voltages a slotted plexiglass panel is mounted to the front of the unit. Diode plugs are plugged into the crossbar through the slots of the panel. An additional plexiglas panel prevents unauthorized operation. This panel can be sealed. An LED is assigned to each input (column) and each output (row). All signals are stored and can therefore still be displayed after reset of the command. The LEDs and memories are supplied via an internal converter. The matrix 7UW50 is incorporated in a housing 7XP20. The housing is available for panel surface mounting and cubicle or panel flush mounting and corresponds with the housings for the generator protection series 7UM51. Operation Connection between input and output signals is implemented via diode plugs. The plugs are plugged into the front panel of the matrix. A reset button is used for resetting all memories and for testing the LEDs. The memories (LEDs) can also be remotely reset via a binary input.

Tripping concept for numerical protection The 7UM51 numerical generator protection units incorporate an integrated software matrix. Since each protection unit has 5 tripping relays, the integrated matrix has 5 outputs. This number is generally sufficient for smaller generators of up to 50 MVA capacity. If several multifunction units are used for the protection of a small generator, the trip contacts of the individual relays must be connected in parallel (see Fig. 2). If more than 5 tripping channels are required, master relays can be added to the trip relays integrated in the protection units. The master relays then take over the task of decoupling the signals, multiplying the contacts of the integrated trip relays and realising the tripping combinations via the assignation of trip signals (circuitbreakers, deexcitation switches, ...) to form trip commands from protection functions (see Fig. 3). This solution is possible if no more tripping combinations (master relays) are to be activated from a numerical protecion unit than trip relays exist in the devices (5 for the series 7UM51).

If a variable arrangement of the tripping combinations is required for large generator units with more than 5 tripping channels, the hardware matrix described here can be used. With this variant it is also important to note that a maximum of 5 trip signals can be extracted from the protection units. If the integrated software matrix is used to combine several trip signals, more than 5 tripping commands from the protection functions implemented in the device can be compressed into 5 signals. The combined signals in each case then activate the same matrix column and therefore the same tripping combination. When changing the diode combination the tripping combinations of all the protection functions allocated to this matrix column are affected. (See also Fig. 4 and Fig. 5). Each matrix row activates trip relays.
