Design of Concrete Bridges by AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications


March 24, 2005 Holiday Inn Select, Baton Rouge, LA Course Description In this one-day course, the latest developments in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, related to the design of concrete bridges, are discussed. The seminars emphasis is on the state-of-the-art design methods in the LRFD Specifications. They include the Modified Compression Field Theory, the Strut-and-Tie models, and a unified method of design for reinforced and prestressed concrete. The course will provide theoretical background and detailed design examples for: the design of a typical precast, prestressed concrete girder; and a two-column bent cap. Who Should Attend? Highway agency bridge designers and consulting engineers Why Attend? By October 2007, all bridges receiving federal funding must be designed by AASHTOs LFRD Bridge Design Specifications. La DOTD has begun a transition to this new design philosophy. This course will provide an understanding of the background of the LRFD concrete specifications, an overview of the state-of-the-art design procedures, and design examples. Workshop Outline

Basile G. Rabbat, SE, PhD is Manager, Structural Codes, in the Engineered Structures Department of the Portland Cement Association, Skokie, Illinois. He received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt, and Master and Doctorate degrees in Structural Engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada. He currently serves as Secretary of ACI Committee 318, which develops the Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete. Basile has published over forty papers related to behavior and design of structural concrete. He is active on many national technical societies. Basile was elected Fellow of ACI in 1988 and of PCI in 1995. He is a registered Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois. Email: brabbat@cement.org Tel: (847) 972-9062 Shri B. Bhide, SE, PE, PhD is Manager of the Bridge Program at the Portland Cement Association. He received a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and Master and Doctorate degrees in Structural Engineering from the University of Toronto. Shri has over sixteen years professional experience in bridge and building structural engineering and is active in TRBs Committee A2C03 Concrete Bridges, PCIs Bridge, and Bridge Producers committees, PTIs committee on Bridges, and ACIs technical committees 343 Concrete Bridge Design and 365 Service Life Prediction. He is a registered Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois, and a registered Professional Engineer in the States of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio. He has over 24 years of professional experience in bridge engineering. He received a Bachelor of Environmental Design (Architecture) from Miami University, a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Toledo, and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas. He is active in the PCI Bridge Committee and ACI technical committees 343, Concrete Bridge Design, and 345, Concrete Bridge Construction, Maintenance, and Repair. He developed an LRFD Prestressed Concrete Beam Design Workshop and several LRFD prestressed concrete beam design examples. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Ohio and Virginia.
